Questions about whether we're only interpreting the Bible according to authorial intent because of our post-Enlightenment way of thinking and whether Zephaniah 3:17 is being taken out of context when someone takes comfort in it. How should I respond to someone who says, “The only reason you interpret the Bible by going back to authorial intent is that you live in a post-Enlightenment way of thinking, and others might interpret it differently”? Am I taking Zephaniah 3:17 out of context when I take comfort in it?

Biblical Hermeneutics is a term I started hearing and seeing used a lot this past year, so naturally, I wanted to know more about it. That's where our guest, Ken Matey, comes in. Father Len describes the challenges of accurately interpreting the Bible and reveals what it takes to understand its full meaning. Support Wrestling with God Productions here: https://www.GiveSendGo.com/WWGProductions Highlights, Ideas, and Wisdom Three levels of interpretation are essential to accurately interpreting the Bible: literal, symbolic, and contemplative. Complete understanding of the Bible is impossible if you just interpret it literally because 50% of the Bible is poetry and it contains many allegories and parables. The full meaning of poetry, allegories, and parables is obscured or lost in strict literal interpretation. Jesus teaches in parables because he wants us to think about the meaning of what he's teaching. Atheists love to interpret the Bible literally so they can mock it. The New Testament was originally written in Greek which is more sophisticated than English. There are words in Greek that can only be interpreted literally. Like when Jesus says about the Eucharist, “you must eat my flesh and drink my blood. Do this in memory of me.” Father Len reveals symbols contained in the gospel where Saint Peter walks on water to demonstrate how symbolic interpretation of the Bible is essential to understanding its full meaning. Father Len explains the symbols present in the story of the prophet Elijah's experience with God on Mount Horeb and how they reveal what is possible when we're able to hear God in silence and how our knowledge of God grows over time. Father Len demonstrates how knowledge of context at the time it was written and understanding the meaning of its original Greek and Hebrew language are vital to accurately interpreting the Bible. He uses this context and understanding to debunk the notion that the Bible says Jesus had siblings, brothers and sisters. Should interpreting the Bible be left to the “experts”? While certain high-minded scholars have argued this, the Scriptures plainly direct fathers and mothers to train their children up in the ways of God—and this can only happen by them carefully reading His word and explaining it. In this podcast, Scott Brown and Jason Dohm, joined by guest Chris Law, encourage parents to actively read and discuss the Scriptures with their children, and they offer some helpful interpretive keys to use. The first is context: who is the author of a particular book addressing, where is he located, and what is he speaking about? Other principles: clear texts interpret unclear texts; specific texts interpret general texts; and literal texts interpret figurative texts. They also urge parents to not miss the big picture, but to make it their chief aim to show their children how great and wonderful God is whenever they open His word. Developing Your Personal Bible Study: Interpreting the Bible Grammatically Pastor John Tilley Wednesday, July 20, 2022
"Everyone who reads the Bible is a Bible Interpreter" Whenever we read our Bibles, our minds; not just our spirit is constantly engaged with the text written within. We are constantly, in an ever-growing experience of comprehension and understanding of God's word. Sadly, it is very possible to go wrong in this process. This session of the Biblia series seeks to bring us the knowledge of Bible interpretation, and how to apply that very knowledge to our growing understanding and comprehension of God's word. --------------------- Website: https://bit.ly/bmglive4 Instagram: @bmg.global --------------------- Intro/Outro Music: Slowly by Smith The Mister --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bmglive/message

Ron Dunn brings part two of his series on interpreting the Bible
The Bible is full of details that we often skim over which can cause us to miss a major revelation and limit our walk with Jesus. If we take time to hear the Spirit speak to us we can use that revelation knowledge to become more like Jesus and grow in our maturity. Let's take a look at Matthew 17 verse 1 and see how a little detail can inspire us and teach us how to better interpret the Bible and not misinterpret the word of God. Are we in the sixth day and preparing for the seventh day of Jesus's return in His glory to judge the living and the dead.

Welcome to episode fifty-seven of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I'm very excited to be joined by Dr. Michael Graves. Michael is Professor of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College. Michael is an alum of Wheaton, he has a master's degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and earned another master's degree and his PhD from Hebrew Union College. Michael has written several excellent books on biblical interpretation including The Inspiration and Interpretation of Scripture: What the Early Church Can Teach Us (Eerdmans, 2014); Biblical Interpretation in the Early Church (Fortress, 2017), and he contributed one of the volumes – the Commentary on Jeremiah – in the Ancient Christian Texts series (IVP Academic, 2012).His most recent book is, How Scripture Interprets Scripture: What Biblical Writers Can Teach Us about Reading the Bible – just recently released from Baker Academic. One of the great gifts of the last five hundred years is that every day Christians can have the Bible in their own hands, in their own language. Although this is an amazing blessing, the challenge it creates is that every Christian with their own Bible also becomes their own interpreter. That's where the work of scholars like Dr. Graves can be so helpful. Michael's interest and passion is not only to help people interpret the bible well in the present, but also to help all of us interpret God's Word in connection to the great biblical interpreters of the past. I found our conversation helpful, thoughtful, and enriching; and I know you will too.
Daniel and I discuss the Augustinian framework of interpreting the Bible as art. Within this, though, is the assumption that the Bible is artistic, which it is! So we talk about how intertextuality affects the interpretation of the text along with a modern-day example in the new Spider-man film. Also, I brought in Michael Heiser's podcast episodes about Revelation to show how intertextuality is used in the book and how sly these kinds of things can be.
