The Crusaders are hoping Chiefs fans will come check out the action at this weekend's Super Rugby Pacific final in Christchurch - but they've suggested leaving the cowbells at home. In a LinkedIn post, Crusaders chief executive Colin Mansbridge promised this would be a game fans would enjoy, but there's no room for cowbells in the stadium. Mansbridge jokingly claimed they'd be melted down and turned into a trophy - but he's serious about the risks. "You go to Eden Park, you go to FMG, you go to any other venue in the country and you've got a bit of leg room and a bit of bum room, but you don't in this place." Officials have rung the bell on cowbells at Christchurch and banned them ahead of the Super Rugby Pacific final between the Crusaders and the Chiefs this Saturday. The cowbell is a staple of Waikato rugby, but Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge confirmed on social media that the noisemakers had been banned from the venue - citing safety concerns. D'Arcy Waldegrave spoke to Colin on Sportstalk about how he can possibly justify this, and then got Chiefs CEO Simon Graafhuis on to respond. The Crusaders' 27-year perfect home playoff record is on the line again as they size up the Blues for a place in the Super Rugby Pacific final. It's week two of the playoffs and the two teams will be facing off in tonight in Christchurch. After that, the ‘lucky losers', the Chiefs, will take on the Brumbies in Hamilton. Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge told Mike Hosking that Super Rugby Pacific CEO Jack Mesley keeps banging on about wanting jeopardy in every match, and last week's clash between the Blues and the Chiefs was a good example. He says the Blues' win surprised most of them, but that's the nature of the game – you don't know who's going to win, and that's what you want. Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge joins Brett McKay & Harry Jones on The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast for an in-depth chat about what make the Crusaders so great, both as a team and an organisation. And we have to say, the explanation might surprise you! Fourteen Super Rugby titles in 29 season puts them in pretty rarified air, in terms of professional rugby, and it's extraordinary to think that Colin is just the third Crusaders CEO in all that time. And he goes into great depth outlining how that success really just comes from alignment across the board, from players and coaches to the front office, from Chair and Board to CEO and then onto Head Coach and Captain. But also, how the history of the place doesn't just define the Crusaders, it guides them every day. This truly is a Great Rugby Chat, we hope you enjoy it and take something out of it. An early return to New Zealand is highly unlikely for 56-test All Blacks first-five Richie Mo'unga. The 30-year-old's agent Cam McIntyre has confirmed his Japanese club and New Zealand Rugby were in talks to forgo the final year of his three-year contract. But those discussions have stalled and - despite All Blacks coach Scott Robertson being keen to have his Crusaders' talisman back this July - the earliest Mo'unga could return to the All Blacks would be the middle of next year. For this episode, I spoke to Wendy Salkin, a philosophy professor at Stanford University, about informal political representatives: people who speak or act on behalf of groups in the political sphere without being elected to do so. Familiar examples include Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malala Yousafzai, and Greta Thunberg.Informal political representatives raise awareness of issues and bring about political change, often achieving things that people with more formal power cannot or do not. But their existence also raises some ethical questions. Do they need to be authorised? Can they be held accountable? What if the things they say diverge from the views of the people they represent?Professor Salkin's book on this subject, Speaking for Others: The Ethics of Informal Political Representation, was released by Harvard University Press on July 9th.Relevant reading:Alcoff, L. Crusader chief executive Colin Mansbridge has offered a defence after their coach was scrutinised after their ten-loss Super Rugby season. Coach Rob Penney is in hot water after getting caught referring to a journalist in a derogatory manner after facing questions over his future in the role. Penney's apologised to Mansbridge - who in turn apologised to the reporter. Mansbridge says Penney's apology for his actions was satisfactory. Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport, shedding more light on the fallout from a Wednesday press conference where coach Rob Penney used a swear to describe a journalist. Penney was being pressed hard by the reporter with questions around his job security. Once the stand-up wrapped up, Penney said "he's a disgrace that c***" to a colleague, without realising third-party devices were still recording. Mansbridge goes in-depth on the press conference, why he instead of Penney apologised to the reporter, whether or not the reporter overstepped the mark with his questions, and more.
The Crusaders CEO has apologised to 1 News's Thomas Mead on behalf of coach Rob Penney. Rob called Thomas the c-word a little too close to a hot mic after a testy exchange. Chad is a man whose faith is deep in his bones. He discovered a personal relationship with God when he was still in his teens, survived a near-death experience, and grew up to embody his spirituality by becoming a pastor. He is passionate about engaging with people who have doubts and questions about the existence of God, and is energized by talking about the big questions and using his experience, philosophy and belief to help others find answers. . KEY TAKEAWAYS Most people haven't read the Bible but have deeply embedded beliefs about what it consists of. Pastors can help people develop a relationship with God that works for them. There is always something to learn. Curiosity and humility can only help us be continual, lifelong learners. It's okay not to know everything! Teachers don't necessarily have all the answers but they can help you ask the right questions. The only thing you need to engage with “ancient” texts or spiritual questions is a willingness to have an open mind. BEST MOMENTS “He's not just some historical figure locked up in a dusty, old book – there is a living God who speaks and walks with people today.” “You *can* read the Bible, you *can* handle it.” “I'm not religious; I consider my relationship with God the most important thing.” “It's a historical narrative, you don't have to be a scholar, or search for meaning.” ABOUT THE GUEST Chad's relationship with God truly began when he was a teenager, and has been an unshakeable cornerstone of his faith ever since. Special guest Chad Mansbridge joins us today from Bayside Church in South Australia to bring a message of life and hope for those who have suffered death or division in their relationships. God knows what it is like to be the Father of a fractured family, and He has provided the solution to reconciliation through the Gospel—the power of Christ's death and resurrection life! Beginning in Ephesians 2, Chad then walks us through the meta narrative of Scripture revealing the many causes of broken relationships, before circling back to the themes of resurrection and reconciliation in Ezekiel 37.
