Chopological Vs. Christocentric Life

Pastor Mike Neglia invited me to The Expositor's Collective to discuss my recently published book:Christ's Scope and Scepter: His Word, His WorldWith his permission, I've slightly edited it and chopped it up in a good way...not like the way the Quadriga chops up the Word of God.Speaking of chopping things up that shouldn't be chopped up, we discuss the continuity between a Christocentric interpretation of the Word and a Christocentric interpretation of the world. For me that has taken me on an adventure in Christian Education, Spanish lay preaching in church, and healthcare chaplaincy. This conversation scratches the surface on issues covered more in depth in my book. Don't just take up and listen for my spicy, confessional take on the pre-critical Quadriga. Stay for the encouragement to join the ranks of lay ministers in church and chaplains in healthcare. The harvest is ripe and the Christocentric laborers are few!

Preaching Like a Puritan, Pastoral Care and Problems with the Quadriga - Roberto Gazga

In this episode of the Expositors Collective Podcast, Mike Neglia is joined by Roberto Gazga, a hospice chaplain, lay preacher at Christ the King Reformed Baptist Church in Niles, Illinois, and host of the Urban Puritano podcast. Roberto is the author of Christ's Scope and Scepter: His Word, His World and is currently working on his forthcoming book, How to Preach Like a Puritan. Together, they explore Roberto's journey into expository preaching, his theological evolution, and the unique perspective he brings to ministry through his work as a hospice chaplain. Roberto doesn't hold back when it comes to his concerns about the quadriga, the medieval method of interpreting Scripture in four layers (literal, allegorical, tropological, and anagogical). He finds it to be a confusing and, frankly, unnecessary system that muddies the waters of clear biblical interpretation. Instead, Roberto makes the case for a Christ-centered approach that's as refreshing as it is practical. He brings up the idea of reading Scripture as a single, unified story where Christ is the star of the show—not buried under a pile of allegorical detours. If you've ever wondered how to preach Christ from all of Scripture without feeling like you're walking on theological tightropes, Roberto's insights will make you smile, think, and maybe even sigh in relief. The conversation also highlights Roberto's wisdom on pastoral care, drawing from his years of experience as a hospice chaplain. He shares practical advice for pastors making hospital visits, encouraging them to approach these situations with preparation, empathy, and the courage to lean into difficult moments. Roberto points out that a listening ear and a compassionate heart often open more doors than any pre-planned script. And when the moment is right, Scripture and prayer can transform even the most challenging conversations into opportunities for gospel hope. He and Mike share stories and insights that will leave you better equipped—and perhaps a bit less intimidated—about stepping into these sacred and sensitive spaces. Roberto Gazga is a certified hospice chaplain in Chicago, where he earned a BA in theology from Moody Bible Institute. In his spare time, he produces written and podcast content for www.urbanpuritano.com related to the Bible, Reformed theology, preaching, and much more! He is also working on his forthcoming book, How to Preach Like a Puritan.  Christ's Scope and Scepter: His Word, His World: https://www.amazon.com/Christs-Scope-Scepter-Word-World/dp/B0DL8HGMGQ/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.VxpvIhfuh3OLlw9gM4jruauM4bSfZg8MdOum-QXzG8j2il5Ujr8Iu5ScBW9naDEOgMZfrkgwdyFjKaoJtTIJUqR8-hFDiQ926C0re9UkguA.L9uMeVM-RfssiA1RTAyQj_ColyIJ3Ca-UXdogWfDKVk&dib_tag=se&keywords=christs+scope+and+scepter&qid=1737550608&sr=8-1

Like a bombshell on the lay theologian's playground, I am happy to announce a forthcoming new book I wrote that I hope serves the body of Christ! (https://urbanpuritano.com/new-book-preview).CHRIST'S SCOPE AND SCEPTER: HIS WORD, HIS WORLD scratches several layers below the surface to show the continuity between a Christocentric interpretation of the Word and a Christocentric interpretation of the world, the trinitarian contours of which all believers should be familiar with.In this episode, I give a little bit of the back stories of how this work came together and how the fusion of hermeneutics, Biblical Theology, and worldview thinking can benefit the Church for such a time as this. Part 1 lays the groundwork for interpreting the Word. Part 2 is a rubber meets the road extending reading and test case from the Old Testament. Part 3 concludes with a Christocentric vision of the world. In unabashedly confessional Calvinist fashion, the book shows how the rays of Christocentrism shine forth in the midst of the endarkenment of medieval interpretive sensibilities such as found in the Quadriga. Finding the Bible's meaning involves not an ascent to higher realms of spiritual meanings, but a sometimes arduous descent and digging into the text of Scripture. No dualism exists in the Word. The Bible's meaning is at once nothing more than literal and nothing less than spiritual. This same posture is taken in order to rightly "see" the world. In His light, we see light. In the pursuit of faith seeking understanding, God's truth is all truth! Readers will be able to use this book as a resource at Church, in small groups, at home, Bible College, Seminary, and of course, by yourself with your Bible under a tree!  Take up and read a free preview!

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Cryptocurrency is not all bad. We should stay away from it anyway., published by titotal on December 11, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. So I've wanted to write something like this for some time, but was discouraged by the very real chance of getting downvoted into obscurity by cryptocurrency fans. I hope that in the face of the FTX debacle, people will at least consider the good-faith arguments put forward here. The title is a reference to this recent astralcodex post, which I critique in this article. Introduction In the wake of the FTX debacle, there seems to be a small but sizeable minority that believes that there was absolutely no way to see this coming. A massive company, the number 2 crypto exchange in the world, just collapses into nothing due to incompetence and/or fraud? Surely this is just a black swan event? Just like Celcius, three arrows capital, Voyager, and Terra/Luna, all of which collapsed in the last year. Go back to previous downturns, and you'll see the downfall of exchanges like Quadriga and mt gox, the latter of which was by far the largest crypto exchange in existence at the time when it collapsed. And the collapses are just getting started, with the fall of FTX taking out Blockfi, and threatening to take out Genesis and Grayscale. Tether, the largest stablecoin and the third largest crypto-coin, has been caught out lying about it's reserves. If they are as fraudulent as many suspect, the repercussions for the rest of the crypto industry could be disastrous. For an event to be a black swan, it needs to be outside the realm of normalcy. But the collapse of FTX was a fairly predictable event. Even true believers will admit that the crypto industry as a whole has significant problems with speculative bubbles, ponzis, scams, frauds, hacks, and general incompetence. The potential for a collapse was warned against on this forum, months ago. (I agreed with the prognosis in the comments at the time, for what it's worth). Note that I'm talking about collapse, and not specifically fraud. It was indeed hard to predict the precise mechanism by which FTX could fail, but I don't think that let's anyone off the hook. If FTX had failed due to incompetence, hacking, or exposure to other fraudulent companies, their investors would have still been screwed over, and the financial and reputational damage to EA would still occur, just with slightly better optics. The fundamental problem with cryptocurrency at the present time is that: A) Almost everyone involved with crypto is using it to try and get rich. B) Almost nobody (in relative terms) is using crypto for anything else. As long as this continues to be the case, crypto as a whole is still in the middle of a massive speculative bubble, and participating in said bubble is inherently dangerous. A. Crypto is infested with speculative bubbles, fraud, and scams (and everyone knows it) The crypto market is "rife with frauds, scams and abuse" SEC chairmen Gary Gensler, August 2021 We're just seeing mountains and mountains of fraud Ryan Korner, IRS criminal investigator, Jan 2022 During this period, nearly four out of every ten dollars reported lost to a fraud originating on social media was lost in crypto, far more than any other payment method. Federal Trade commission, June 2022 Other than a speculative asset with a glorious whitepaper and an impressive "ex workers" of big name companies all around the world, they all promise the Moon but underdeliver. I have yet to see something that has an actual use in realife that is using any of those tokens/coins technology. r/cryptocurrency post with 13k upvotes Matt: (27:13)I think of myself as like a fairly cynical person. And that was so much more cynical than how I would've described farming. You're just like, well, I'm in the Ponzi business and it's pretty good.J...

Tom welcomes back Diego Parrilla to the show. Diego is an author, engineer and economist. He has an extensive background in commodities, having worked for several major banks. Diego believes the Fed hiking cycle is approaching its peak as we enter next year. There are limits to how high they can go, and the rate of hiking cycles has placed a lot of pressure on markets. The dollar has been putting pressure on other countries. There are pockets of weakness in the system, and it's difficult to know what might burst first. How rapidly the Fed will pivot will depend on how markets react and the credit markets. Currency markets will also be a concern and there is excess hidden leverage in the system. Hopefully, central banks will learn the risks of zero and negative interest rates. The result is gross mis-allocations within the economic system. Everything revolves around inflation and as we enter the next phase of markets, there is a perception that we will print less. Diego believes the inevitable result will be even more money printing. Eventually, the only way to sustain the system will be to grant central banks yield curve control. To prevent bubbles from imploding they will need to print more and that will result in further inflation. We're just delaying, transferring, transforming, and enlarging the problems. The energy situation in Europe is very interesting because it shows the problems that have built up. There is a reliance on Russia and a lack of capital investment. Governments want energy security, but the problems can be exacerbated by hoarding. Energy subsidies will only increase the problems of production capacity. He explains why he likes gold and feels that it is an anti-bubble investment option, even though it's been frustrating for many investors recently. He cautions that now is not the time to be using leverage and discusses how best to position one's portfolio. Location: Skype Date: Wednesday, 17th December Project: nathanielrich.com Role: Author In December 2018 Gerald Cotten, the CEO of Canadian crypto exchange Quadriga, was on his honeymoon in India with his new wife. While there Gerald fell sick and a few days later died from complications related to his Crohn's disease. Gerald was the only person who held the private keys to Quadriga's cold storage wallet, leaving an estimated CA$250m ($190 US) of customer deposits unrecoverable. In January 2019 QuadrigaCX, Canada's largest cryptocurrency exchange shut down for business, filing for bankruptcy in April. While initially it was suspected the loss was down to gross incompetence and failure to structure a contingency plan, conspiracies quickly started to circulate:  Had Gerald faked his death in India as an elaborate exit scam? When Gerald lost $millions of Ethereum in a smart contract bug a couple of years earlier, had he used customer funds on other exchanges to try and trade his way out of this hole? Had Gerald lost funds he was harbouring for criminal gangs and escaped to avoid repercussions? To add to the mismanagement of funds and keys the events leading up to and following his death were equally suspicious:  Just days before the trip Gerald had signed a new will leaving his entire estate to his wife.  Following his death, Gerald's wife did not request an autopsy and removed the body from the hospital.  His death was announced on January 14th, Despite dying on December 9th. Whatever the course of events in India, the death and mismanagement of the exchange and private keys raise many questions, and there are likely parts of the story we may never know. In this interview, I talk to author Nathaniel Rich about his investigation into Quadriga for Vanity Fair. We discuss the suspicious death of Quadriga's CEO Gerald Cotten, the missing $250m of customer funds and the FBI's investigation. Note: following my interview with Nathaniel, the lawyers representing the customers of Quadriga have asked Canadian authorities to exhume Gerald's body. You can read more about that here.
