Most accounts of Christian leadership in the first two centuries focus on the diversity of leadership structures and the various cultural influences that impacted it. The First Pastors: Early Christianity's Vision for Ministry (Gorgias Press, 2026) demonstrates that within these structures and contexts early Christians shared a clear set of theological convictions about pastoral leadership. Through literary and theological analysis of relevant passages in the Apostolic Fathers and New Testament, The First Pastors demonstrates four shared convictions about pastoral ministry: (1) the necessity of a particular kind of virtue for pastoral leaders, (2) the authority of pastoral leaders, (3) the essentials of pastoral work, and (4) the reality of pastoral suffering. These shared convictions emerge from the variety of communities represented by these texts and are so well attested to that they suggest a much greater degree of unity than is presently assumed in the field. What happens when a movement that once presented the hope of Christ in a city… disappears? In this episode of the Ephesiology Podcast, Andrew and Michael take you into the ruins of Pergamon—walking through the Asclepius healing complex, standing beneath the shadow of the Zeus–Trajan temple, and tracing inscriptions that once defined the religious life of the city. Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued our weekly theme, “End Times Week and AI,” with Dr. Charlie Dyer, David Szafranski, and Dr. Wayne Grudem. Dr. Charlie Dyer joined us to discuss how current events in the Middle East point toward the end times and how to stay grounded in God’s Word without fear. Dr. Dyer served for thirty-three years on the faculty and in the administration of three different institutions, including twenty years at Dallas Theological Seminary and ten years as Provost of Moody Bible Institute. He is the host of “The Land and the Book” radio program and is a licensed guide who leads groups to Israel and other biblical lands. David Szafranski also joined us to discuss seeing life beyond retirement as a continued calling to live with purpose and serve God. Dr. Grudem serves as Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Theology and Biblical Studies at Phoenix Seminary in Arizona. He was also a member of the translation oversight committee and general editor for the English Standard Version of the Bible.
