The speaker critiques this version of faith, highlighting its historical role in subjugation and oppression. They contrast this with a more liberatory approach to Christianity, emphasizing the need to interpret the Bible through the lens of liberation theology. SummaryIn this episode, Father Shannon explores the passage from Colossians 1:24-2:5. He discusses the process of writing and receiving feedback, the desire for clear-cut answers and new authorities, and the complexity of interpreting scripture. Father Shannon also delves into Paul's understanding of suffering and the completion of Christ's sufferings, as well as the importance of wrestling with texts and taking ownership of one's faith. He emphasizes the need for community and connection, and the power of engaging in the work of reconciliation.TakeawaysWriting is a process of discerning which feedback strengthens the work and which is distracting. The desire for clear-cut answers and new authorities is natural, but it is important to engage in the wrestling and grappling of faith.Scripture is a library of books that require interpretation and wrestling with the texts.Taking ownership of one's faith and engaging in the work of reconciliation can restore meaning and purpose. Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Passage Reading02:07 The Process of Writing and Receiving Feedback03:02 Questioning Authority and Seeking New Answers04:30 Desire for Clear-cut Answers and New Authorities06:23 Transitioning to Colossians and the Complexity of the Text07:24 Understanding Paul's Suffering and Completion of Christ's Sufferings09:19 Beliefs about Two Ages and Set Amount of Suffering10:25 Interpreting Scripture and Wrestling with Texts13:08 The Bible as a Library of Books and Wrestling with Texts16:32 Paul's Commission and Revealing the Secret Plan18:53 Assurance of Community and Connection20:21 The Desire for Control and the Power of Taking Ownership22:17 Restoring Meaning and Engaging in the Work of Reconciliation22:56 Closing Remarks and Benediction For community and to support this work go to www.patreon.com/inthemarginspodcast

Ben and Justin discuss 4 pillars of approaching Scripture. We often like to exegete and see what is being said, but what role does the biblical narrative of who God is, the trajectory of what God is doing, and those God has empowered to lead play in how we interpret Scripture? Beyond that, when there are disagreements in interpretation, what matters are worth dying for, dividing for, debating for and deciding for. This will set up future podcast conversations as we seek to grow in the Lord.

St. Augustine acknowledges the many insights and interpretations of Scripture. He distinguishes between the factual truth of biblical events and the deeper truths conveyed through the narratives. As Fr. Gregory Pine and Fr. Jacob-Bertrand Janczyk explain, our human limitations mean we lack perfect understanding when reading God's Word. Because of this, St. Augustine advocates approaching Scripture with humility. Today's readings are Book 12, Chapters 22-27. We intuitively know that reading Lord of the Rings is different from reading a biography of John G. Patton. In the same vein, reading a scientific journal requires a different approach than reading Beowulf. But we tend to drop that understanding when it comes to reading different books in the library of Scripture. The Bible is filled with different types of literature. There are historical narratives, poetry, letters, and apocalyptic literature, sometimes several genres are included in one book! So we must be aware of the rules involved in properly reading, interpreting, and applying the different types of writing. Acey Floyd, an elder of Christ Church New Albany and office manager of Media Gratiae, joins John Snyder this week to discuss chapter four of Knowing Scripture: Practical Rules for Biblical Interpretation. In this chapter, John and Acey discuss important rules to a general and specific reading of Scripture to make sure we get the most out of it. The Southern Baptist Convention has recently expelled Saddleback Church for hiring a female teaching pastor and now has a list of churches within their denomination that also have female pastors. How should we approach this issue? What does the Bible say? If you believe women can be pastors, does that mean we are not being Biblical? How can we foster harmony and love amidst our differences? Join us for this conversation that we hope is helpful and informative! David's Blog: https://davidruybalid.wordpress.com/ Zach's Blog: https://zachzienka.com/

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss a modern heretical movement that many people are susceptible to without even knowing it. They had an earlier discussion on this topic - CCP33: On the Rise of Heresy - that you definitely need to go back and listen to if you missed it. But today's discussion takes a deep dive into the “prosperity gospel movement,” also known as the “health-and-wealth gospel.” This is the idea that if you come to faith in Jesus, along with the eternal reward of heaven comes other benefits as well - specifically in the areas of health and finance. This is prosperity preaching, and it has no place in the life of the church. Episode Links A lot of prosperity preachers pull Scripture out of context to make sweeping generalizations about what followers of Christ should expect God to give them. Learning how to properly read and interpret Scripture is so vitally important for those who call themselves Christ followers, which is why Dr. White led a series at Mecklenburg Community Church called “How to Bible”. One of the installments is on how to read and interpret Scripture. He also wrote a blog on this topic titled “Two Main Principles for Getting the Bible Right” that you can read HERE. A large part of today's conversation centered around the idea of receiving blessings from God, something that is absolutely a biblical truth. But God is not a genie in a bottle, and any type of preaching that says, “If you have enough faith God will give you everything you ask for” is heresy. For a better understanding of blessings that come from God, check out a series by Dr. White called “God's Blessing, Your Life.” Finally, in case you missed the Church & Culture LIVE Podcast, you can go back and listen to that HERE. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday.

How do Catholics interpret Scripture? Fr. Mike breaks down the three basic principles for interpreting Scripture: attentiveness to the content and unity of the whole Bible, reading Scripture within the living Tradition of the Church, and attentiveness to the analogy of Faith. These criteria allow the Church to interpret Scripture accurately and prevents us from taking Scripture out of context. Today's readings are CCC 109-114. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/ciy Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
