This is part two of our conversation with Dr. Jack Naglieri, an emeritus professor at George Mason University and senior research scientist at the Devereux Center for Resilient Children. Dr. Naglieri is best known for developing the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test and the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS). Emily and Jack talk about the history and evolution of intelligence testing, exploring how traditional methods like the Stanford-Binet and WISC have influenced our understanding of intelligence for over a century. Dr. Naglieri shares his critical perspective on the limitations and biases of these tests, particularly their reliance on verbal content and the implications for equitable assessment. They also talk more about the PASS theory (Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive processing), which forms the foundation of the CAS, and how this theory, based on brain function, can provide a more accurate and inclusive measure of cognitive abilities. The CAS was designed to evaluate these processes, and offers insights into students' strengths and weaknesses, which can help identify learning disabilities and giftedness. This conversation challenges traditional views on intelligence testing and offers new perspectives on how to measure and understand cognitive abilities in a fair and scientifically grounded manner. As part of our two-part series, we are speaking with Dr. Jack Naglieri, an emeritus professor at George Mason University and senior research scientist at the Devereux Center for Resilient Children. Dr. Naglieri is renowned for his work in intelligence testing and the development of the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test. In this episode, part one of the interview, he and Emily talk about his insights on the evolution and misconceptions surrounding intelligence assessment. They delve into the history of intelligence testing, highlighting the limitations and biases inherent in traditional methods. He describes the experiences that led him to question the validity of verbal-based intelligence tests, and ultimately inspired his development of nonverbal assessment tools. Dr. Naglieri describes how and why his tests aim to measure thinking rather than knowing, and how it provides a more equitable approach to assessing intelligence. They discuss the PASS theory of intelligence, and how it forms the foundation of the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS), a tool designed to measure these processes and offer a nuanced profile of an individual's cognitive strengths and weaknesses. They cover much more as well, it's an enlightening conversation about how we measure intelligence. Look for part two of the chat in episode 230. On this week's episode of the Detection at Scale podcast, Jack talks with Dr. Anton Chuvakin, Senior Security Staff at the Office of the CISO at Google Cloud. They dig deeper into the conversation taking place online around decoupled SIEMs, which both Jack and Anton wrote about. They discuss what a decoupled SIEM is, the evolution of data platforms and security capabilities, if decoupled SIEMs will work broadly with current customer demands, and if having backend data lakes is the best solution for fast, real-time querying. Topics discussed: What is a decoupled SIEM, and why the broader discussion around whether security data lakes will replace SIEMs prompted Anton's Medium post. How this conversation is being driven by the fact that we're coming to the "end of the runway" on previous storage choices. The arguments around why decoupling may not work broadly, simply because customers want integrated SIEMs. The evolution of data storage platforms and how successful past attempts at integrating security capabilities were. Why there's not a straightforward solution to storage — and why it's a challenge that's taking years to solve. Why having a data lake on the backend is the best solution to fast querying and real-time detection. A discussion around OCSF and the benefits of log normalization. This week on Founded & Funded, Madrona Partner Vivek Ramaswami talks to Jack Naglieri, Founder and CEO of 2022 IA40 winner Panther Labs. Jack founded Panther, a leading cloud-native security information and event management platform, because he had experienced first-hand the threat detection challenges companies have at cloud scale. Growing frustrated with the compromises required by traditional SIEM platforms, Jack took his experiences from Yahoo and Airbnb and set out to build a solution that detects and responds to suspicious activity in real time. In this IA40 spotlight episode, Jack shares where the inspiration to launch his own company came from – hint it was from a cold email he received. He also breaks down why he decided to take the leap and become an entrepreneur and what it's like transitioning from a software engineer to a founder and then to a successful founder. Jack also shares details about what it takes to land – and keep — your first customer and provides some advice about how CEOs should be the only ones learning on the job. But you'll have to listen to get all the details.

In today's Cyber Security Matters episode, Dominic Vogel and Christian Redshaw are joined by Jack Naglieri, Founder & CEO of Panther. Jack is a security practitioner turned entrepreneur. He experienced the pains of detecting security breaches at scale and built a company to solve these problems. Panther is the leading security monitoring platform that enables security teams to create developer-centric workflows for detection response and overcome legacy tooling that has historically struggled due to high cost, operational overhead, and rigid workflows. During our conversation, we will discuss: -How to know if your cyber security matches your operational needs -What it looks like to combat cyber alert fatigue -The risk of sticking with traditional cyber security approaches -How important it is to be able to access all of your data when remediating a cyber incident Here is how you can connect with Jack: -Website: www.panther.io -LinkedIn: @JackNaglieri
Jack Naglieri grew up in Ohio, but moved to Virginia when he was 10. He had a normal east coast family up-bringing, but he focused on tech early on, even as a kid. Eventually, he went to George Mason to study Cyber Security. Outside of tech, he is into cooking and fitness. He focuses a lot on making sure that his body and brain are in a good state, through exercise, meditation, sleep and healthy eating.Jack was working as an incident responder previously, and during that time, he figured out that AI based models for breach detection don't work as well as intuitive humans, as often times there isn't enough signal for them. Along with using antiquated sets of data, he decided that there must be a way to leverage the cloud and build a solution to solve the pain points within this process. This is the creation story of Panther Labs.SponsorsImmediateOrbitPostmarkStytchVerb DataWebapp.ioLinksWebsite: https://panther.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacknaglieri/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/code-story/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Welcome to the Detection at Scale Podcast! My name is Jack Naglieri, CEO and founder of Panther Labs and more importantly, I'm also a security practitioner. When I was part of the Airbnb and Yahoo security teams, I experienced firsthand the challenges of high-scale security monitoring. In 2018, I left Airbnb to fully dedicate myself to solving this problem. In this short episode, I will cover: - Who we are - Why we are doing this podcast - What you can expect on future episodes We can promise you one thing: this is NOT a podcast about selling you what Panther can do. The #1 reason we are doing this, it's because we want to help demystify a lot of techniques that we use to operate effectively at scale. Thank you for listening and very excited to start this journey together!
