Mack McKelvey with the Blueprint for Startup Success

Mack McKelvey, Founder and CEO of SalientMG, joins me to explain why "being uncomfortable" has been a great recipe for success throughout her award-winning career in tech and marketing. With remarkable candor, Mack reveals how disruption propelled her from big tech brands like Lucent, Verisign, and British Telecom to the startup world, where she mastered being an "intrapreneur" before launching her own ventures. While I almost give away what my initials (E.B.) stand for, Mack shares the fun but sobering story behind her own name change—and a realization about "what's in a name." It definitely ties in with how it took a name change for this powerful woman, appropriately featured during Women's History Month, to go to game changer.  She ultimately created SalientMG in order to offer "the kind of firm I could never find when I was on the inside"—a company staffed entirely with senior practitioners who understand the daily realities of startup marketing. This same commitment drove yet another one of her startups just last year, but this time in the form of a  community appropriately called "StartUp Marketer," that democratizes access to marketing expertise with everything from templates to live advisors.  As a fellow podcaster (host of "The Cred"), Mack generously shares both professional insights and personal stories—from her surprising celebrity encounters (think Jude Law to Dave Grohl!) to how her move from Manhattan to Vermont during the pandemic influenced her perspective on work and life. Throughout our conversation, Mack emphasizes what she's learned throughout her career: the importance of staying relevant and adapting to change. Read everything! She also emphasizes that successful marketing isn't just about tactics—it's about understanding the people behind every decision and fostering diverse teams to help drive meaningful outcomes. She's an advocate for underrepresented voices and speaks passionately about her mission to create platforms for women, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent and people of color -- evident from her work, for example, with the non-profit, Creative Spirit -- and giving all people more visibility. "I had a real challenge with representation in technology. I felt like there were a lot of people that we weren't hearing from. But man did they have great ideas and I wanted to build a platform or a way to help these folks get out in market in a meaningful way." Whether you're a startup founder, a marketing professional, or simply someone interested in authentic leadership, Mack's journey from "accidental" tech marketer to industry game-changer offers invaluable insights about intention, representation, and the courage to create what doesn't yet exist. Watch out for record fraud when shopping. With technology, shopping has become so easy and set records in 2024 of around $5.3 trillion. While this by itself is a problem as some people are over shopping, it has also invited more fraud than ever before and for the first three quarters of 2024 there was an increase of 14.5% to $8.7 billion of shoppers who lost money to fraud. Two things are happening here. First, consumers may be too emotionally excited about the purchase and they forget to look for scams that could be happening to them. The second item is the scammers are becoming smarter about how to scam people and they are making it more difficult to detect. To avoid being scammed, it is always wise to deal with a company that you know. However, even that may not guarantee your safety. Scammers can now use names that look very similar to the names you know. They can do this by simply adding or deleting a period or a letter somewhere in the title. So before you make that purchase, be sure it is the correct site that you want to be at and you're not sending your money to some scammer from across the world!   Should you be investing in airline stocks with the record year they've had? It has been quite the year for airline stocks and there have been huge one-year gains for United Airlines at 138% and Delta Airlines at 49%. While it was a laggard compared with its peers, American Airlines still posted a strong return of 29%. It is forecasted for holiday travel between December 19th and January 6th, there will be a record number of travelers at 54 million. Since our economy was reopened after Covid, consumers continue to enjoy traveling, which has benefited the airlines. Even with the record number of travelers and the large gains for the airline stocks, they still trade at reasonable price to earnings ratios of 9.7 for United Airlines, 10.1 for Delta and 10.5 for American Airlines. My concern is could this be a value trap going forward? The low price to earnings ratio might suck you in only to see a slowdown in travelers in 2025. We could also see a little bit higher oil prices based on production not coming online quick enough to keep up with demand, which would hurt the profit margins for these companies. While they might look enticing, I wouldn't be interested in adding these positions to my portfolio at this time.   Could you benefit from the private prison boom that may happen in 2025? In 2025 there could be a huge demand for detention centers and investors may benefit from investing in the private detention center called CoreCivic Inc, trading under the symbol CXW. CoreCivic has a market cap of about $2.4 billion and a FFO on a forward basis of $1.79. The company could benefit from recent statements from ICE saying it will need enough beds to detain a minimum of 100,000 migrants. The agency already has funding for 41,500 beds. Their competitor GEO has a head start already housing about 40% of ICE detainees. It should be noted that CoreCivic was at $14 the day before the election and it climbed to $22 the day after. There was concern that some banks would withdraw funding from companies who participated in the immigrant detentions, however it appears that CoreCivic does not need any new capital to bring on new facilities or bring back idle facilities. The high estimate for deportation would be 1 million people in one year at a cost of $88 billion. It is estimated that there were 11 million undocumented migrants in the US as of 2022. These higher dollars could benefit the private prisons as a quick alternative if there is no room in the county jails. I was disappointed that the company does not pay a dividend, but it has pulled back from a recent high of $24.99 a share to under $22 a share. At the price the stock would trade at a reasonable 12.29x the estimated FFO for 2025. An executive from the private company GEO group spoke about an unprecedented opportunity for their company, it could be a good investment opportunity for the small investor as well.   “Big Social Security Changes Coming” The Social Security Fairness Act is set to be signed into law next week and will impact Social Security benefits for millions of Americans.  This bipartisan bill will eliminate the “Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP)” and the “Government Pension Offset (GPO)” which currently reduce social security benefits for workers and spouses who have public pensions.  The Windfall Elimination Provision applies when someone has worked a job where they paid into Social Security and also a job where they did not pay into Social Security and receive a pension instead.  In this case, the Social Security benefits are reduced based on how many years they paid into Social Security.  The Government Pension Offset applies when a spouse is entitled to a Social Security spousal or widow benefit but they also worked a job where they did not pay into Social Security themselves.  In this case, the amount of their pension reduces the Social Security benefits they are entitled to receive.  With the passing of this new Social Security act and the elimination of the WEP and GPO, Americans who were having Social Security benefits reduced will no longer see a reduction.  This is one of the largest changes to Social Security in the last several years.  The downside is, the increased benefits will cause the Social Security trust fund to run out sooner, even if the elimination results in a fairer benefit system.    Companies Discussed: Tidewater Inc (TDW), Constellation Brands, Inc. (STZ), Carvana Co. (CVNA) & VeriSign, Inc. (VRSN)

VeriSign manages the registry for .com domains and sets the prices for these domains. Recent reports indicate that the company raised the annual registration fees for .com domains multiple times. Critics claim that these price increases are excessive and benefit only VeriSign. Concerns arise over the lack of competition in the domain registration market, which allows VeriSign to maintain its pricing power. The U.S. Department of Commerce reviews the agreements between VeriSign and ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names. Additionally, some stakeholders argue for regulatory actions to ensure fair pricing and competition in the domain registration industry.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. In this episode of PING, Verisign fellow Duane Wessels discusses a late state (version 08) Internet draft he's working on with two colleagues from Verisign. The draft is on Negative Caching of DNS Resolution Failures and is co-authored by Duane, William Carroll, and Matt Thomas This episode discusses the behaviour of the DNS system overall in the face of failures to answer. There are already mechanisms to deny the existence of a queried name or a specific resource type. There are also mechanisms to define how long this negative answer should be cached, just as there are cache lifetimes defined for how long to hold valid answers, things that do exist, and have been supplied. This time, it's a cache of not being able to answer. The thing asked about? It might exist, or it might not. This cached data isn't saying if it does exist or not, it's a caching failure to be able to answer. As the draft states: “… a non-response due to a resolution failure in which the resolver does not receive any useful information regarding the data's existence.” Prior DNS specifications did provide guidance on caching in the context of positive responses and negative responses but the only guidance relating to failing to answer was to avoid aggressive re-querying of the nameservers that should be able to answer.

In this episode of PING, Verisign fellow Duane Wessels presents the ZONEMD resource record, defined in RFC8976. The “MD” in ZONEMD stands for “message digest” and this resource record (RR) is a checksum over the state of a zone, including all its records and the zone serial record (“start of authority” or SOA) which includes a serial number. This means that by fetching an entire zone, either in the DNS or “out of band” from an FTP or Web server or however you receive it, if it has the ZONEMD record you have a way to check that the entire zone, as it should be for that serial, is exactly what you have in-hand. ZONEMD is going to permit people who copy zones to serve them (locally, or more widely) now have a basis to trust the state of the zone before publishing it. Duane talks about the long lifetime of this idea with roots back into the 1990s, and the road to RFC8976 taken by the co-authors. A ZONEMD record with an un-testable signature will be placed in the root zone of the DNS in September of this year, and will become testable in December to allow time for the community to understand it's behaviour. This podcast is accompanied by a repost of a Verisign blog Duane wrote recently which has just been republished here on the APNIC Blog: Adding ZONEMD protections to the root zone Read more about DNS, ZONEMD, and other blogs and podcasts by Duane on the APNIC Blog and elsewhere online: The Root of the DNS revisited(2023, Geoff Huston) Notes from DNS OARC 38 (2022 APNIC Blog post by Geoff Huston) Notes from DNS OARC 35 (2021 APNIC Blog post by Geoff Huston) RFC8976 (2021 RFC D. Michael Frankel is Founder and Managing Partner of Trajectory Capital. With an impressive background encompassing c-level executive roles in corporate development, strategy/innovation, CFO, and COO positions, Michael has played pivotal roles in both large and small growth companies. Throughout his career, he has spearheaded disruptive innovation and fueled aggressive expansion in global technology, information services, and professional services organizations such as Deloitte, LexisNexis Group, IRI, GE Capital, and VeriSign. With a remarkable track record of executing growth strategies, Michael has successfully leveraged various approaches to drive success. He has orchestrated over 110 acquisitions and strategic transactions, developed new offerings and products through innovative thinking, forged complex ecosystems through alliances and partnerships, facilitated market and geographic expansion, and made corporate venture investments in 18+ ventures. THE PURPOSE OF A DEAL Michael places heavy importance on aligning any deal with the overarching goals of a company. Instead of pursuing deals for the sake of it, Michael suggests starting by defining what the business aims to achieve. Whether it's a new product, market expansion, or acquiring a specific technology, understanding the desired outcome guides the selection of the appropriate transaction type. To start: Understanding each person's perspective in a deal is vital for effective communication, trust-building, and achieving mutually beneficial agreements. THE VALUE OF VARIED PERSPECTIVES Having sat in different chairs throughout his career, Michael acknowledges the importance of embracing diverse perspectives. Whether it is the risk-oriented mindset of lawyers, the analytical approach of finance professionals, or the entrepreneurial spirit of deal makers, each perspective brings unique insights to the table. By fostering empathy and understanding among deal-making professionals, better outcomes can be achieved through collaborative decision-making. THE SELLER'S PERSPECTIVEAs Michael transitioned to the seller's side, he gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by small companies during the due diligence process. Large corporations often present sellers with lengthy lists of requirements, expecting comprehensive documentation. Small companies, however, may not have the resources or playbooks to fulfill these demands, creating uncertainty and anxiety. This realization reinforced the importance of empathy and support for sellers throughout the deal-making journey. THE INVESTOR'S POINT OF VIEWIn his current role, Michael has gained insights into the investor's mindset. Investors carefully consider the timing of a deal, balancing the potential growth of a company with the need to seize opportunities. Understanding the time value of money is crucial, as waiting too long for a "perfect" deal may result in missed opportunities. Michael highlights that some deals may not look favorable on paper but have the potential for significant synergies and growth, requiring a nuanced approach in evaluating their value. Understanding the before, during, and after phases of a transaction is vital for deal success. By embracing empathy and considering the viewpoints of all stakeholders involved, deal makers can navigate the complexities of the deal-making process with greater wisdom and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Remember, the end of a deal is just the beginning of a new chapter, where the true value of the transaction is realized through integration, growth, and strategic implementation. • • FOR MORE ON MICHAEL FRANKEL:www.michaelfrankel.comwww.trajectorycapital.com Corey Kupfer is an expert strategist, negotiator, and dealmaker. He received his J.D. from Seattle University School of Law and his B.S. degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served as an attack helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army and earned his Airborne Wings. In this episode of On Point, Mark talks about his non-linear career path that started after being medically discharged from the military because of a helicopter accident. He explains his paradigm for assessing work opportunities, advice for military veterans as they transition into civilian business, and how he has balanced his career and family life. Mark emphasizes how veterans can translate their unique skill sets and experiences into jobs and leadership opportunities, the importance of networking with fellow alumni, and how they need to look out for and promote themselves to prosper outside of the army.   -----------------"My big message now to folks who are transitioning out is don't lock yourself into a life plan, something like that where you feel like you're off course, or you're failing if things don't work out exactly like you thought they were gonna work out. Do a ton of networking, super important. That's actually how stuff works in life. That's actually how opportunities present themselves. You have to work really hard to get the opportunities and executing the opportunities, you do a lot of networking that way. And, don't be discouraged if you feel you're on a non linear path to something. Many times in my life most of the best things that happened to me weren't planned; something happened, something presented itself, somebody took a chance on me, and then I went in that direction and it worked out." - Mark McLaughlin-----------------Episode Timestamps02:00 AAR - After Action Review Segment02:15 Decision to Attend West Point02:55 Experience at West Point03:55 Starting the Crew Team at West Point05:50 Difficulties in First Year07:45 Experience Flying Cobra Attack Helicopters09:50 Abrupt end to Military Service and Making a Career After the Army14:30 Career After the Military26:15 Mentors and Advice from Others28:00 Time at Palo Alto Networks35:00 Working with Different Types of Investment Firms and Boards37:15 SOP - Standard Operating Procedure / Daily Routines and Advice45:45 Giving Back - Advice for Transitioning Veterans-----------------LinksMark's LinkedInMarks TwitterTim Hsia LinkedInLance Dietz LinkedInWest Point Association of GraduatesOn Point Podcast
