This episode is part of Pear VC's series on Medicaid, covering the basics that founders need to know to build innovations that support communities in need. Today, we're delighted to introduce Taylor Justice, the driving force behind Unite Us, a company that uses advanced technology solutions to coordinate community-focused social care and integrate social drivers of health into the healthcare continuum and regulatory landscape.   Unite Us developed the first closed-loop referral (CLR) platform that links social care service delivery with detailed outcomes to understand a person's total health journey. The platform streamlines collaboration among healthcare professionals, community organizations, health plans, and government agencies to provide real-time visibility into the community impact and actionable insights. Through active engagement and accountability, this model increases the efficiency of social care and improves the experience by removing the onus from the patient to navigate eligibility requirements for local services.   Founded in 2013, Unite Us has grown to more than 600 employees serving communities across the US. The company's investors include ICONIQ, Oak HC/FT, and more who are helping advance the company's mission to connect people to the care they need to improve their lives. Taylor started his career in the US Army. After serving in the infantry, he transitioned into an Account Executive role at CCS Medical. From there he became a sales engineer for JDSU which offers products and solutions for communications. After that, Taylor started his entrepreneurial journey co-founding the consulting firm, HigherEchelon, which helped organizations meet their performance goals. In 2013, he co-founded Unite Us and serves as President to this day. Taylor holds a BS in Latin American Studies and Environmental Engineering from West Point Academy and an MBA from Columbia Business School. In this episode, we explore Taylor's founding journey and how Unite Us's closed-loop referral process is improving care outcomes. We also discuss what it's like to be at the forefront of using social determinants of health data in Medicaid.

You're standing at the edge of a vast canyon. You gaze across the seemingly endless expanse. The wind whistles through the rocky outcrops, the sun casts long shadows and a river snakes its way far below. You might not want to, but you're about to navigate this canyon. To traverse this challenging terrain, you'll need to understand the hidden paths, the potential pitfalls, and the best way to navigate the unpredictable environment… The canyon we speak of represents the complex and ever-changing world of B2B SaaS. Navigating this landscape requires keen insight, adaptability, and the ability to identify macro trends that drive the industry forward. Enter Doug Pepper, a Partner at ICONIQ Capital. He has proven himself to be an adept guide in the realm of B2B SaaS. Serving on the boards of several high-profile companies and investing in numerous others. Through this, Doug has gained a deep understanding of what it takes to thrive in the competitive world of SaaS. With years of experience and an impressive track record alongside the likes of Marketo, Canva, and Calendly, Doug is prepared to help you scale and succeed. His knowledge of the SaaS economic landscape, combined with his unique insights, make him an invaluable resource for anyone looking to understand and navigate this challenging territory. High Level Overview:Economic downturns are inevitable, and companies should adopt a "wintertime" mindset to successfully navigate through these challenging times.Focusing on long-term sustainability, profitability, and efficiency is essential for SaaS companies to thrive in uncertain economic environments.Maintaining a strong company culture, prioritizing product development, and ensuring customer satisfaction are key factors that determine a company's success.A strong board of directors can provide valuable guidance and support to help companies weather economic storms. The current valuation multiples in the SaaS market are more realistic and sustainable compared to those of recent years; however, there is potential for some growth in valuation multiples.Survive to Thrive in 2025:Preparing for an economic downturn as a SaaS company involves adopting a forward-thinking approach, focusing on the foundational aspects of the business, and being ready to adapt to changing market conditions. Companies that take a proactive approach and prioritize long-term success will be better positioned to weather the storm and emerge stronger on the other side.Adopt a "wintertime" mindset: Be prepared for slower growth and challenging market conditions by focusing on long-term sustainability. This involves building a financial buffer, anticipating potential risks, and devising strategies to tackle obstacles that may arise during an economic downturn.Focus on profitability and efficiency: Evaluate and improve your unit economics to ensure a clear path to profitability. This includes optimizing operational processes, reducing costs where possible, and making data-driven decisions to maximize revenue and minimize expenses.Maintain a strong company culture: Foster a supportive and motivating environment for your employees to ensure they stay engaged and committed. This involves open communication, employee recognition, and providing opportunities for professional development to keep your team motivated during tough times.Prioritize product development: Continuously invest in improving and expanding your product offerings to meet the evolving needs of your customers. Focus on innovation and differentiation to stay ahead of the competition and maintain your market share, even during a downturn.Ensure customer satisfaction: Keep your customers happy by providing excellent service and addressing their needs promptly. Implement customer retention strategies such as personalized outreach, targeted promotions, and regular feedback collection to maintain strong relationships and reduce churn rates.Weathering the storm of an economic downturn as a SaaS company requires a combination of strategic planning, adaptability, and a focus on the core aspects of the business. By taking these steps, companies can not only survive but thrive in the face of economic challenges, positioning themselves for long-term success and growth in the B2B SaaS industry.Further LearningsFollow Doug on LinkedIn and Twitter.

Not only is there is plenty of money in venture — but even more is coming. Top funds are continuing to raise huge funds.   #5. In this episode, I spoke with the brilliant Adam Burrows. For those who don't know, Adam is a venture investor, a former C-level leader, and the co-founder and Managing Partner of Range Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm focused on funding and supporting entrepreneurs in the Colorado area. Before that, as a senior vice president and general manager at HomeAdvisor, Adam was part of the executive team that built the company from $100M to over $1B in revenue, taking the company public in 2017 – it was Colorado's largest tech IPO. Later, Adam was the first C-level executive at Guild Education, helping the company to raise its Series C and sign their largest clients towards $1B valuation. Guild is backed by investors such as Bessemer, ICONIQ, and General Catalyst, having raised $378.5M in total funding. He had amazing personal and professional experiences as an entrepreneur and business leader and is here today to share some of these learnings with us. Here are some of the questions that I asked Adam: Before joining the tech ecosystem, you graduated at Harvard Law School and went to a consulting firm right after. Why did you decide to not pursue a career as a lawyer? You then joined HomeAdvisor. How did you feel jumping from traditional consulting to a startup? Why HomeAdvsior was so successful despite all the challenges seen by other incumbents in the services marketplace space? Do you think that being a Colorado-based company impacted the overall culture at HomeAdvsior? As we see the world going remote, how do you see the impact of your strategy, since it has a geographical component attached to its ethos? Shortly after HomeAdvisor IPO, you joined Guild Education as the first C-level executive at the firm. How was the feeling of getting back to an early stage company? After helping Guild Education become a USD 1B company you decided to dedicate your life to helping entrepreneurs and co-founded Range Ventures. Why did you decide to focus mainly on Colorado based startups? What has changed in your life as a VC compared to everything you did before? What do you think will be the impact in venture from a macro perspective? Have you had any realization as an emerging manager that you were not expecting? This was a great chat, and I'm sure you will find it extremely insightful.

Also unbedingt reinhören! Halbzeit - ProLeague Talk! In this week's Real Estate News Brief... new trade war repercussions, a big dip in mortgage rates, and disappointing news for Equifax data breach victims.   We don’t have a lot of economic reports from this past week, but there sure is a lot happening with the trade war and potential impacts on our economy. The situation with China has escalated rapidly -- first with failed trade talks, then with President Trump’s call for new tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump wanted China to agree to buy U.S. agricultural products at the talks, but when that deal didn’t happen, he called for 10% tariffs on $300 billion worth of goods not yet subject to those duties.   www.NewsForInvestors.com
