"Bitter" Truths, Big Beers, and Bold MovesThis week, we crack open a triple dose of hop-fueled commentary, brewery gossip, and World Beer Cup bombshells. We even got a little salty—literally. In Beers of the Week we pay tribute to a fallen Georgia brewer with Jekyll Brewing's Big Creek Kölsch. Jekyll, a longtime staple with both supporters and haters, is set to shut down all locations on Mother's Day. We dove deep into their history, rise, Kickstarter roots, and the harsh economics of brewery expansion in a post-industrial park taproom era. Then came the ESB talk. What the heck is an ESB anyway? Brian broke down the style—medium malt, medium hop, and no, it's not actually that bitter. We dug into the surprising World Beer Cup win: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale taking gold in the American ESB category. Wait, what? Pale Ale is an ESB now? According to the new guidelines, apparently so. The lines blur, styles evolve, and Brian drops knowledge.Speaking of the World Beer Cup, Georgia showed up big: 6 breweries, 9 medals. New Realm, Bold Monk, Wild Heaven, and others brought home serious hardware. We raised a glass to our local heroes and called out a few surprise absences (no Creature Comforts?).Economic chatter followed, and for once, the news wasn't all doom and gloom. The U.S. beer industry contributed over $470 billion in 2024, thanks to jobs, taxes, and of course, your favorite six-packs. But challenges remain—Tilray teeters on delisting, and even success stories sometimes mask hard decisions behind closed taproom doors. And finally, Tecate went weird: a salty light lager made with Gulf of Mexico water, available only on a floating bar off the Yucatan. No, really. So whether you're crushing cream ales with bourbon chasers, debating beer style semantics, or lamenting your favorite brewery's closure, this week's episode has you covered. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! In a sea of closures Jekyll Brewing continues to growIt's not a story you hear often these days. Not only has Jekyll Brewing weathered the storm of the last few years, they're thriving. Founder and CEO Michael Lundmark joins us this week to chat about beer, taking care of yourself, and what's been key to his growth.Jekyll opened in the Dark(er) Ages of Georgia beer. Breweries weren't allowed to serve food and couldn't even sell beer direct to consumers. It was a land of tours and tastings and anyone around in these days may have some tickets or tokens stashed back.In addition to expanding his locations, he's also expanded his offerings. Alongside a variety of beer you'll find spirts, seltzer, and wine. As the laws changed Jekyll took advantage of the new rules. They opened a restaurant brewery in city center of Alpharetta, GA. Woodstock and Gainesville, GA would follow, and Jacksonville Beach, FL. Jekyll's not done yet, Mike has his sites of a few more Florida locations in the near future.Take Care of YourselfMike and his wife were always active and healthy people. His wife was very fit and never had any health issues, so she rarely visited the doctor. Unfortunately, after feeling unwell, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. Mike reminds us to make sure to get checked regularly, no matter how we feel. Mike also supports cancer research with annual brew and fundraiser at Jekyll Brewing.Brewery Closures and Bottle SharesSome bummer news this week as we hear of Cascade Brewing's closure. They were a favorite in the fruited sour game, we'll miss them for sure.We also reminisce on he bottle shares of yesterday. They don't seem to happy like they used to, and it's nice to get any excuse to dust off something from the cellar. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Would you pay more for sustainably brewed beer?We made it through another week and we have definitely earned a beer or five. It's hawt in Georgia. We're supposed to top 100° heat index this weekend. Say a prayer for us.A survey suggests 50% of beer drinkers would pay 30% more for a beer that was sustainably brewed. I'm skeptical of those results, but that's what the survey says. Sustainably seems to be a goal of nearly every brewer now so I kind of expect my brewery is trying to be sustainable. How about you?No more "best by" dates! We have to take a stand, y'all. Breweries have to start putting canning dates on cans. None of this best by stuff that you have to decipher. What do they consider best by? 3 months, 4 months, 6 months? Just tell me when you put that juice in the can and I'll make my own decision, thank you very much.Following up on our discussion of adding a bit of saline solution to cocktails, Brian experimented with adding some distilled water to whisk(e)y. He says a bit of water really does open them up and can take a really good rye or bourbon to great. I'll have to play around some more. Based on previous tests I haven't found one I like more once it's been diluted a bit. Maybe I wasn't doing it right.More news on Anchor Brewing as the deal with Chobani's founder moves along, a brew fest in Chicago that's been delayed for 4 years with no word from the organizer (and no refunds), and some chatter on the delicious contraband that is Cuban rum and cigars.Next week we'll talk with Michael Lundmark of Jekyll Brewing. One of our local joints. Despite many others closing up shop, Jekyll is expanding. We'll find out what he's secret is. Cheers! Make sure you drink something good this weekend!Beers of the WeekSmith & Lentz - Quackenbruck Pilsner (German Pils w/Sapphir)Good Word - Ron's Dinner AleCreated with the British beer writer Ron Pattinson. Cherokee County's Bryce Leatherwood won season 22 of “The Voice” Tuesday night, and the country singer dedicated his win to his family, friends and supporters. The Hickory Flat native and Sequoyah High School graduate won season 22 of "The Voice" Tuesday, capping off a journey that started in September with blind auditions. As the winner of season 22, Leatherwood received $100,000 and a record deal with Universal. Leatherwood's family was in attendance Tuesday night to cheer him on.Leatherwood also thanked his supporters from Cherokee County and Georgia. When thinking about the future, Leatherwood said he wants to "get on top of the ball and try to get some music out as soon as possible." The Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program is hosting a candlelight vigil at 5:30 p.m. December 21 at Cherokee Veterans Park, in Canton, to remember veterans who are homeless. The vigil will be held at the nation's only homeless veterans statue. The marble statue depicts two life size veterans, one male and one female, standing on a pentagon base displaying the five branches of the military. Inscribed on the base is the phrase, “No Veteran who fights for this country, should have to fight for a job, a roof over their head, or the care they need when they come home." The event is scheduled to take place at sundown, which is currently targeted at 5:33 p.m. The free to attend event is open to the public. Every night, about 49,000 veterans find themselves on the street homeless, said Jim Lindenmayer, director of the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Program. In 2018, there were about 8,400 U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. This means that there are roughly six homeless veterans for every soldier who served in Afghanistan. Homeless veterans are found all over the U.S. In Cherokee County, the intake and processing of homeless veterans is up 32% from last year and what is causing more concern is that Cherokee Homeless Veteran Program is seeing more female Veterans, some with small children, as well as senior veterans who are homeless. A Canton woman is behind bars on charges related to the death of a toddler, police announced Thursday. Phillissa Diallo, 40, is charged with concealing a death and second degree cruelty to children. According to the Canton Police Department, police received a walk-in report of a deceased toddler found inside a residence. Officers responded at about 4:10 p.m. to a home on Hearthstone Landing Drive, where they found the body of a female toddler. The body will be turned over to the GBI Crime Lab to determine the cause of death and identification confirmation. Diallo was arrested by Canton police and booked into the Cherokee County jail Wednesday afternoon, a jail report shows. As of Thursday afternoon she remained in custody without bond. The toddler's death remains under investigation. A Sequoyah High School teacher has earned a top award for instructional excellence from the Cherokee County school superintendent. Superintendent Brian Hightower presented the 2022 Game Changer Award for Instructional Excellence Dec. 13 to Sequoyah High School Career Pathways teacher Brandon Grummer. He made the surprise presentation to Grummer, who leads the school's engineering drafting and design and architectural drafting and design programs, in front of his peers during a faculty meeting. Four Game Changer awards are presented by Hightower each year. These are Instructional Excellence to a classroom teacher, Instructional Support to an employee who serves in a support staff role, Instructional Leadership to a school or district leader and Instructional Advocacy to a non-CCSD employee. Grummer, whose first career was in architecture, is credited with building a successful architecture and drafting career pathway program at Etowah High School. He earned Etowah's 2018 Teacher of the Year and Golden Apple honors and later joined the staff at Sequoyah High School, where he again created a successful program for future architects and engineers. Cherokee softball coach Tonya Carlisle was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame over the weekend, finishing off her 19th season with the Warriors on a high note. Carlisle, the current GADC Softball Vice President, was the 26th person to receive this honor. Carlisle led Cherokee to 21-8 overall in 2022, with an 11-4 record in Region 5 7A. The Warriors earned another trip to the state tournament and finished in the Final Four. It is not the first time Carlisle has seen this type of recognition. For her time on the playing field, she was inducted into the Kennesaw State Softball Hall of Fame in 2008. She played with the Owls from 1992-95 and was a three-time NAIA All-American selection before, along with an NCAA Division II All-American award. Carlile's prowess on the diamond translated to the coach's box, with her imprint all over the Cherokee softball team's success. Carlisle led the Warriors to their first winning season in 2004 and their first state playoff appearance in 2006. She helped the program become a mainstay in the postseason during the ensuing years and through this season. Carlisle continues to put winning teams on the field at Cherokee, and with her Hall of Fame induction, the standard is set. Despite the challenges brewers have faced post-Prohibition in Georgia, our state has a rich history of brewing. The first brewery was started in Georgia in 1738 and Atlanta was home to one of the largest breweries in the country from 1858 until 1955. Early craft breweries had varying levels of success in a world where most people were still content with their macro-brewed lagers. However, in the past 5 years the number of breweries in Georgia has more than doubled, and there are more on the way. Ron Smith and Mary O. Boyle, authors of Atlanta Beer and Prohibition in Atlanta sit down with us at the 2018 Roswell Beer Festival to share some of the great stories behind Georgia's breweries. From the very first brewery, whose early foundations were based on the necessity of having a drink that wasn't filled with bacteria (like water) through to the modern movement towards local and hyper-local breweries. Credit to Michael Lundmark of Jekyll Brewing for the information on Georgia's first brewery, located on Jekyll Island.
