Her publication, Coaching Redefined: A Guide to Leading Meaningful Instructional Growth, was released in June of 2019. Show Notes: -Intentional coaching is to help both teachers and coaches think about the intentional steps needed to grow in a given area. -Take smaller steps towards those big goals and be intentional with those steps. What is one small change you can make? Go on a journey to grow from where we are and keep moving forward. -Student discourse- If we don't have student discourse in a classroom then where do we start? If we have a little, how do we start? The book's purpose is to look at what is out there in research around proven ways for students to learn and think about how we can help teachers implement those effectively in their classrooms. -Students need to feel safe and have time for those academic conversations. Coaches need to think of the small incremental steps a t teacher can do to meet the true student discourse and big gains in student learning. -When we don't layer on so many things on our teachers' plates and instead have an intentional focus on those small steps, we see huge growth. -Coaches have to be a filter for things happening within their school system and it is truly an honor. You have to keep in mind the broader goals of the school. How do I pull all of that together? -We only keep trying to get better and better. Just keep swimming. Let it go. Shake it off. Just keep moving forward. Just keep improving a little bit more each day. There are some days you can run fast towards your goal. There are some days you can walk towards it. And there are some days you need to just rest. And it is all about moving forward. -Be mindful of the listening tour as a coaching superpower. Being female is powerful. We are compassionate as instructional leaders. -Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose Connect with Sherry: Website: Reflective Learning, LLC Twitter: @Sherrystclair Facebook: Sherry St Clair Instagram: Sherryst.clair

Wisdom and Productivity: The Podcast of An Imperfect Educator
Lessons from “Build Leadership Momentum: How to Create the Perfect Principal Entry Plan” by Daniel Bauer As a principal transitioning into a new position, I searched for the literature on entry plans. I learned about “Build Leadership Momentum: How to Create the Perfect Principal Entry Plan” by Daniel Bauer.” The book walks us through developing an effective 90-day entry plan for a year of excitement, energy, and momentum. Danny Bauer is a principal development and retention expert, the best-selling author of Mastermind: Unlocking Talent Within Every School Leader and the Better Leaders Better Schools Roadmap, and the host of two of the world's most downloaded podcasts. Danny was a guest here at Wisdom & Productivity on September 16, 2021. Danny, how are you feeling? Please share with us the origin story of the book. Can you explain what an entry plan is and how it can help school principals achieve their goals? Why 90 days? Why is the plan never done? You challenge us to imagine what we want to see on the 91st day; tell us more. You encourage principals to eat a healthy meal every day, which can be taboo in many districts. Can you tell us more? You say the top performers know how to recuperate and rest; can you share about the Ruckus Maker Mindset Tool? You use the example of practicing the 85% rule on Olympic runner Carl Lewis. Can you share with us how principals can emulate the 85% rule as a tool to take care of themselves? You mention the importance of the powerful approach to defining your values. I was particularly impressed with the purple cow idea from Seth Godin; can you tell us more about it? Why principals should stay away from having an open-door policy? How can principals communicate this in a way conducive to positive outcomes? You share a blueprint on a “Get-to-Know-You Survey that I will surely steal for my new school. Can you share with the show's listeners and viewers what this is about (purpose and expected outcomes)? The great idea is to use the results to follow up with teachers/staff on the 1:1 meetings. What should these meetings look like? How long should they be? The idea of writing the top 10 key concerns on index cards: tell us more. Why is showing that you care for the teachers/staff important? Why is it essential to be redundant in your communication? What is initiative fatigue and how to overcome it (example of “whac-a-mole”)? Can you share with us the four steps for Instructional Leadership? What are your recommendations for a principal who wants to do a “get-to-know-you survey for students? You suggest that principals drop in notes offering encouragement and positive feedback. Can you share some advice on when those positive notes ultimately have to provide feedback conducive to change? (the ones that ask people to change, especially considering evaluations) How can principals empower their teams? Why is it essential to measure intangibles gains? Can you share your thoughts on being present as a conduit to develop relationships better? Can you share your thoughts on practicing mindfulness? How can the principal do this during the school day? What is the difference between belonging and othering? Can you share the example in the book (example on page 47)? What are some celebrations we can have throughout the year? Should principals schedule email time during the school year? How to communicate this to staff in a way conducive to positive outcomes? Why is it important to delegate? Can you share about the resources and tools in the book?

In this episode we're talking to one of our favourite gifted educators and differentiation coach, Stephanie Higgs, about how we can all grow our creativity muscle, especially in our gifted kids. Memorable quote… “ “When we broaden that definition of what creativity even looks like, I think a lot more of us fit under that umbrella than we would initially think. And then even those of us who don't feel like it comes as naturally - that's one of the things I'm here to share today, is how we can grow and refine that area of talent.” - Stephanie Higgs Bio… Stephanie Higgs is a passionate, energetic, and engaging educator whose colleagues describe as radiating contagious joy. She has devoted her entire professional life to education, teaching in two of Tennessee's three grand divisions. Stephanie earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she then taught for six years at a museum magnet school and helped students achieve up to three years' growth in reading in a single year. After relocating to Middle Tennessee, Stephanie became a fourth-grade teacher, which had been her dream since she was a fourth grader herself! In 2019, Stephanie became a gifted educator and differentiation coach, where the staff quickly named her their Teacher of the Year before being named a region-level semi-finalist for Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Soon after, Stephanie was honoured with the TAG (Tennessee Association for the Gifted) Horizon Award, which is given to a gifted educator demonstrating promise and leadership in the field. Later, Stephanie was named the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) Teacher of the Year. Stephanie recently graduated with an additional graduate degree from Tennessee State University in Instructional Leadership and now serves on the executive board as secretary for the Tennessee Association for the Gifted. - - - - More… Enjoyed the podcast? Today we finish our conversation with gifted educator and differentiation coach Stephanie Higgs, in part 2 of episode 2, in the Parents Guide to Gifted Kids' First Year of School Series. We talk about… where is the best place to send my gifted child to school and what kinds of qualifications educators might have, when is the best time to start school for gifted kids? What are the misconceptions about gifted learners? Memorable quote… “ ”A lot of our listeners are going to be parents, but I'm coming from the educational side, so I love partnering and saying we are a team. First and foremost, we are a team. You as the parent are your child's biggest advocate and you know them best. I have more experience on the education side and I have some background and some expertise and years of experience there. But you know your child the best. But the best part is we're both huge strong advocates for your kids. So we are a team. And so I think that kind of frees up some of that, ‘am I overstepping?' ‘Am I saying too much?' But you do know your kid best and you've had… four or five or six years of every minute, every day with this kiddo and a teacher is new to that picture. And so we do have to partner, we have to link... we really have to work together.” - Stephanie Higgs Bio… Stephanie Higgs is a passionate, energetic, and engaging educator whose colleagues describe as radiating contagious joy. In episode 2 of Parents Guide to Gifted Kids' First Year of School Series, we're talking to gifted educator and differentiation coach from Nashville, Tennessee, Stephanie Higgs. We talk about… where is the best place to send my gifted child to school and what kinds of qualifications educators might have, when is the best time to start school for gifted kids? What are the misconceptions about gifted learners? Memorable quote… “ ”One of the norms that we've established in my class is to lean into struggle. And again, if we wait until these kids are older to identify them or to serve them, it's really uncomfortable for them to lean into struggle because they have been set on cruise control for all this time in class. And so, it's really nice and powerful and we can start that at a young age because not only can we challenge them academically, but we can really pair that with some social-emotional support for how to handle challenges, how to lean into struggle, how to develop that stamina and that perseverance what that says about us as learners. Because I think sometimes it becomes almost an affront on who we are as a person when so much of our identity is in our intellect and in schooling, and all of a sudden it's challenging. What does that say about me if I can't do this? What if someone finds out that I don't know how to solve this problem? If we normalise that from the very beginning, we can teach those in tandem all the way.” - Stephanie Higgs Bio… Stephanie Higgs is a passionate, energetic, and engaging educator whose colleagues describe as radiating contagious joy. Cherokee County's Bryce Leatherwood won season 22 of “The Voice” Tuesday night, and the country singer dedicated his win to his family, friends and supporters. The Hickory Flat native and Sequoyah High School graduate won season 22 of "The Voice" Tuesday, capping off a journey that started in September with blind auditions. As the winner of season 22, Leatherwood received $100,000 and a record deal with Universal. Leatherwood's family was in attendance Tuesday night to cheer him on.Leatherwood also thanked his supporters from Cherokee County and Georgia. When thinking about the future, Leatherwood said he wants to "get on top of the ball and try to get some music out as soon as possible." The Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program is hosting a candlelight vigil at 5:30 p.m. December 21 at Cherokee Veterans Park, in Canton, to remember veterans who are homeless. The vigil will be held at the nation's only homeless veterans statue. The marble statue depicts two life size veterans, one male and one female, standing on a pentagon base displaying the five branches of the military. Inscribed on the base is the phrase, “No Veteran who fights for this country, should have to fight for a job, a roof over their head, or the care they need when they come home." The event is scheduled to take place at sundown, which is currently targeted at 5:33 p.m. The free to attend event is open to the public. Every night, about 49,000 veterans find themselves on the street homeless, said Jim Lindenmayer, director of the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Program. In 2018, there were about 8,400 U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. This means that there are roughly six homeless veterans for every soldier who served in Afghanistan. Homeless veterans are found all over the U.S. In Cherokee County, the intake and processing of homeless veterans is up 32% from last year and what is causing more concern is that Cherokee Homeless Veteran Program is seeing more female Veterans, some with small children, as well as senior veterans who are homeless. A Canton woman is behind bars on charges related to the death of a toddler, police announced Thursday. Phillissa Diallo, 40, is charged with concealing a death and second degree cruelty to children. According to the Canton Police Department, police received a walk-in report of a deceased toddler found inside a residence. Officers responded at about 4:10 p.m. to a home on Hearthstone Landing Drive, where they found the body of a female toddler. The body will be turned over to the GBI Crime Lab to determine the cause of death and identification confirmation. Diallo was arrested by Canton police and booked into the Cherokee County jail Wednesday afternoon, a jail report shows. As of Thursday afternoon she remained in custody without bond. The toddler's death remains under investigation. A Sequoyah High School teacher has earned a top award for instructional excellence from the Cherokee County school superintendent. Superintendent Brian Hightower presented the 2022 Game Changer Award for Instructional Excellence Dec. 13 to Sequoyah High School Career Pathways teacher Brandon Grummer. He made the surprise presentation to Grummer, who leads the school's engineering drafting and design and architectural drafting and design programs, in front of his peers during a faculty meeting. Four Game Changer awards are presented by Hightower each year. These are Instructional Excellence to a classroom teacher, Instructional Support to an employee who serves in a support staff role, Instructional Leadership to a school or district leader and Instructional Advocacy to a non-CCSD employee. Grummer, whose first career was in architecture, is credited with building a successful architecture and drafting career pathway program at Etowah High School. He earned Etowah's 2018 Teacher of the Year and Golden Apple honors and later joined the staff at Sequoyah High School, where he again created a successful program for future architects and engineers. Cherokee softball coach Tonya Carlisle was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame over the weekend, finishing off her 19th season with the Warriors on a high note. Carlisle, the current GADC Softball Vice President, was the 26th person to receive this honor. Carlisle led Cherokee to 21-8 overall in 2022, with an 11-4 record in Region 5 7A. The Warriors earned another trip to the state tournament and finished in the Final Four. It is not the first time Carlisle has seen this type of recognition. For her time on the playing field, she was inducted into the Kennesaw State Softball Hall of Fame in 2008. She played with the Owls from 1992-95 and was a three-time NAIA All-American selection before, along with an NCAA Division II All-American award. Carlile's prowess on the diamond translated to the coach's box, with her imprint all over the Cherokee softball team's success. Carlisle led the Warriors to their first winning season in 2004 and their first state playoff appearance in 2006. She helped the program become a mainstay in the postseason during the ensuing years and through this season. Carlisle continues to put winning teams on the field at Cherokee, and with her Hall of Fame induction, the standard is set. Jennifer Brenneman is a Senior Director of Leadership Development at MongoDB. Prior to her work at MongoDB, Jennifer worked in Leadership Development and Instructional Leadership at Teach For All. Thus far, her career has focused on supporting adults to achieve their potential through facilitated experiences, coaching, and leadership development programs. On this episode, we discussed the difference between a career built on a foundation of values rather than goals, why Jennifer isn't interested in "building a career," and why knowing yourself is arguably one of the most important skills to develop. Finally, Jennifer shares a bit about how becoming a parent changed her work and some of the misconceptions folks often carry about work-life balance.
Show Notes, Episode 2: Why is Instructional Leadership so Hard?About this show:Have you noticed how many first-year teachers have trouble managing their classrooms? And if they never receive really good support, they become 5 and 10-year teachers who can't manage their classrooms. And then they leave the profession. But guess what? We have a similar problem in the principalship. Most (not all) principals are not fully prepared to meet the challenges of instructional leadership. And if they never get really good support, their trajectories can mirror that f the teachers I just mentioned. This issue is the reason I started this podcast, the reason I do a daily leadership email, it is the focus of my trainings and courses, and it is at the heart of my APEx program. If you've been listening for a while, you know that instructional leadership is a common focus. Today, we are going to look at the problem of developing instructional leaders and some things I think we can do about it.Notable QuotesFrederick: “In a perfect organization, which does not exist, the people, the structures, and the resources are all aligned to the purpose, and to each other. And a perfectly aligned organization is a great place to work. Unfortunately, it is the nature of organizations to be in disalignment rather than alignment” “You have two basic responsibilities… Your primary job is to keep everybody safe. Number two is to improve student learning and outcomes for students. Now, you don't teach students, so the way that you do that is by growing your teachers. In other words, you have two responsibilities: keep everybody safe and help your teachers get better.” “We can't manage time, time is finite, there is only so much of it, there is nothing to manage. What we have to manage is priorities” “Really good instructional leadership is also about systems alignment” Links:My email: frederick@frederickbuskey.com The Assistant Principal Podcast website: https://www.frederickbuskey.com/appodcast.html Sign up for the daily leadership email: https://mailchi.mp/c15c68e6df32/specialedition Website: www.frederickbuskey.comBlog: www.frederickbuskey.com/blog (reposts of the daily email)
