Bob Culkeen's passion for media began in a high school television studio, and he hasn't left the studios since. In this episode, Bob shares his childhood experience of losing his family home to a fire, and temporarily sheltering with nuns in a convent (an experience most men can't say they've had). We also discuss the importance of educators, technological changes in the broadcast industry, and what happens behind-the-scenes at WTCI PBS. Bob Culkeen is the President and CEO of WTCI Television, the PBS affiliate for Chattanooga. There are few brewers anywhere in Australia with a pedigree to match that of Shawn Sherlock. For the past decade, he's been at the helm of FogHorn Brewery in Newcastle; prior to that he was at Murray's Brewing, helping the business grow from its roots in the Pub With No Beer in Taylors Arm (population: 133) to one of the country's envelope-pushing craft beer pioneers selling 1.5m litres per year at the time he moved on. Even before that – when he was lecturing courses in Australian history in his hometown of Newcastle – he was an avid homebrewer; indeed, we can probably thank the Howard administration's swingeing cuts to Arts funding for kickstarting one of the finest brewing careers of the modern era. As we were preparing to launch The Crafty Pint Podcast, Shawn was taking full control of FogHorn from Mighty Craft, the "craft beer accelerator" no longer involved in craft beer, which had bought into the business when his original partner was moving on. It meant we were keen to bring him onto the show to chat about his experiences working within different brewery ownership models – which he does. That he is on the show this week is also in part due to his role in the creation of Brewcastle, an ale trail guide to Newcastle's best beer (and spirits) spots; FogHorn was the first new brewery to open in the city a decade ago and has since been joined by many others. Over the course of the episode, we trace his career from its very start through the creation of many beers that were ahead of their time to his position today as a much-respected figure in the local beer community. He offers thoughts on the sort of business models that can succeed, what matters if you want to survive in brewing, and even gives some insight into creating great stouts, something he knows plenty about – he's got a few trophies as proof. 14:05 Start of the conversation with Shawn. This was recorded just before the floods hit Shrewsbury (2022) Before I get into what this episode is about I want to send my love and well-wishes to everyone effected. Coming to you from the Salopian Bar in Shrewsbury AL is speaking to Shelley Barratt to discuss The Shropshire Ale Trail. We are also joined the the co-owners of the Salopian Bar, Ollie Parry and Kev Rippard. We start off discussing the terrible couple of years that these guys (at The Salopian Bar) have had with the floods and Covid. Despite the challenges faced, Ollie and Kev are keeping a positive head on their shoulders. They have adapted to their environment, they have weathered the storm (that's a pun, it's clever and you can keep it) and are in-fact looking to expand further with a great looking upstairs area coming soon. Shelly talks about The Real Ale Trail which is happening on the 23rd April. This a great event where a bus will pick you up from The Salopian and take you on a journey to a number of stunning rural pubs across the county. Not only is this an exciting adventure to go on with your friends. It's an event that really helps to illustrate some fine establishments in areas that don't get as much foot-fall as the places in built up areas like Shrewsbury town.  There is something special brewing here that could turn into a fantastic adventure for The Biscuit so watch this space!

Santa’s Sac (10% ABV | 30 IBU) A big and bold Belgian Golden Ale with notes of fruit, spice and pepper. Sleigh Booster (9% ABV | 71 IBU) An Imperial Red Ale with a big dose of hops to round out the malt character. Available at government and private liquor stores, and the brewery. Jolene (8.9% ABV | 32 IBU) A bourbon barrel-aged smoked baltic porter: big and malty with smoke and bourbon notes. Available at privately owned liquor stores and at the brewery. Found on the Kootenay Rockies West Ale Trail.   Two special seasonal beers by Vancouver Island Brewing (Victoria): Champagne Powder Belgian Brut IPA (6.2% ABV | 23 IBU) A celebration in every sip. Floral, fruity, spicy, and bone dry. Barrel-Aged Hermannator Ice Bock (9.5% ABV | 25 IBU) Smooth and malty with vanilla and oak - call it the Bourbonator! Available at government and private liquor stores, and the brewery. Found on the Victoria Ale Trail.   Stoked Winter Ale by Mt Begbie Brewing (Revelstoke) (6% ABV | 20 IBU) This easy drinking winter ale is brewed with rich malts and subtle spices: cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and cocoa. We will be adding Maple Ridge to the BC Ale Trail in 2019.   Winter Beeracle Winter Ale by Dead Frog Brewing (Langley) (7% ABV | 24 IBU) This winter warmer is a celebration of all the good things winter brings: complex beers, warm fires, close family, and good friends. It features flavours of dark chocolate, hazelnut and orange. Available at government and private liquor stores, and the brewery Found on the Fraser Valley Ale Trail.   Brix & Plato by Mount Arrowsmith Brewing (Parksville) (7.2% ABV | 20 IBU) This rich, dark amber Belgian Dubbel is brewed with additions of organic cocoa nibs and orange peels, then finally aged with Shiraz-steeped oak staves, resulting in a festive, complex beer. Available in privately owned liquor stores, and the brewery. Found on the Vancouver Island Ale Trail.   “Sessionable” Russian Imperial Stout by Trading Post Brewing (Langley) (8.5% ABV | 40 IBU) Brewed in collaboration with Full Barrel Brewing, the brewery’s local Homebrew club, this “Sessionable” Imperial Stout produces big flavours while offering a low ABV for the style. Sam Reid is based in Tasmania, a state of Australia. He is a partner at Willie Smith's Cider and President of Cider Australia. Tasmania is what Sam calls the smallest state of Australia which by the way is equal in size to the continental United States. It was colonized by the English who used it in the 1700's as a penal colony. It is also in the southern hemisphere so the apple growing region is found in the south on both Australia and Tasmania. It use to be well known as the Apple Isle a claim to fame that I suspect will in time return. There are 30 apple growers in Tasmania. When asked what would best describe Australian cider, Sam described the overall market for the country as a New World commercial style, with fresh apples, filtered (crossed flowed filtered), carbonated and a bit sweet to please the current customer palate - with an overall ph of 3.6. Whereas for Tasmania ciders Sam says, "There isn't one specific style". Willie Smith's where Sam is the CoFounder/Managing Director they tend towards the French Style of cidermaking, with less emphasis on the acid. Willie Smith's ciders are also unfiltered and oak aged and note that they do have special release ciders in 750 ML bottles which makes a visit to their Tasting Room (The Apple Shed) even more worthwhile. How to get to Tasmania? Take an hour and half flight from Melbourne Take an overnight ferry from Melbourne to the port in Devon. You can take car on the ferry. Spreyton Cider is the first cidery that you can get to once off the ferry. Head south into Cole Valley and look for Red Brick Road Cider and Two Metre Tall in Launceston.
