Martin and Stefan remember when Cascade Brewing released beers into the European webshops. It was a huge moment for EU beer nerds. 10 years later, Cascade has ceased production sadly. They lament the demise of the sour powerhouse that helped bring sour beers to the mainstream. Cascade Blueberry Ale 2015 is from that first release and after 10 years, it's got a lot of life in it. It could probably go another 10 years. They follow it up with another sour powerhouse beer brewery, The Bruery Terreux. Sans Pagaie 2017 is a sour blonde ale with cherries. Their version of a Belgian Kriek. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #sourbeer #kriek #wildale
Alex and Stephen crack open some OG NA offerings and put them through the Power Ranking treatment including Buckler and O'Doul's. In the Beer News, Cascade Brewing closes after 25 years of serving up some of the PNW's most sought after beers, Lord Hobo closes although the owner seems extremely sus, and the newly sober Hulk Hogan releases "Real American Beer" as probably a carny cash grab. In a sea of closures Jekyll Brewing continues to growIt's not a story you hear often these days. Not only has Jekyll Brewing weathered the storm of the last few years, they're thriving. Founder and CEO Michael Lundmark joins us this week to chat about beer, taking care of yourself, and what's been key to his growth.Jekyll opened in the Dark(er) Ages of Georgia beer. Breweries weren't allowed to serve food and couldn't even sell beer direct to consumers. It was a land of tours and tastings and anyone around in these days may have some tickets or tokens stashed back.In addition to expanding his locations, he's also expanded his offerings. Alongside a variety of beer you'll find spirts, seltzer, and wine. As the laws changed Jekyll took advantage of the new rules. They opened a restaurant brewery in city center of Alpharetta, GA. Woodstock and Gainesville, GA would follow, and Jacksonville Beach, FL. Jekyll's not done yet, Mike has his sites of a few more Florida locations in the near future.Take Care of YourselfMike and his wife were always active and healthy people. His wife was very fit and never had any health issues, so she rarely visited the doctor. Unfortunately, after feeling unwell, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. Mike reminds us to make sure to get checked regularly, no matter how we feel. Mike also supports cancer research with annual brew and fundraiser at Jekyll Brewing.Brewery Closures and Bottle SharesSome bummer news this week as we hear of Cascade Brewing's closure. They were a favorite in the fruited sour game, we'll miss them for sure.We also reminisce on he bottle shares of yesterday. They don't seem to happy like they used to, and it's nice to get any excuse to dust off something from the cellar. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! In this BFE (beer-free episode), Barry, Abigail, and special guest Ian Rees (previously interviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod) discuss Ian's Virtual Jukebox submission, Diorama by Silverchair. Barry continually references Silverchair's debut album Frogstomp (not also known as Frogstamp). Abigail and Barry both compared the oeuvre of this album to that of Astoria by Marianas Trench, discussed on Cascadia (Marianas Trench and Cascade Brewing), and Electro-Shock Blues by Eels, discussed on Owlectro-Shock Brews [Eels and Dangerous Minds Brewing Co.). Silverchair worked with composer Van Dyke Parks on this album. In a twist we could not have predicted, we discovered some relevant information about Parks after recording that did not come up in our conversation. Per Wikipedia, Parks wrote “‘City of Lights,' ‘It's a “B” Movie,' ‘Cutting Edge,' and ‘Worthless,' all of which were used in the film The Brave Little Toaster, directed by Jerry Rees.[citation needed].” Well, we'll be the confirmatory citation - Jerry Rees is Ian's dad! However, during the episode, we did discuss Parks' work with The Beach Boys on their unfinished album Smile and his musically eclectic album Song Cycle. Did you catch Barry's weekly Coriolis force joke? Barry compared the guitar sound in Angie by The Rolling Stones to that in World Upon Your Shoulders. Abigail pointed out that had this not been a BFE, Green Bench would have been the perfect brewery to pair with Silverchair. We discussed the trend of including a hidden track after a long silence on a CD (in reference to “Outro,” the hidden track after After All These Years). We referenced I Have Seen the Rain (feat. James T. Moore) by P!nk, Her Majesty by The Beatles, and Mercy, Sweet Moan by The Black Crowes as comparative examples. Reddit has also discussed this issue at length. Wikipedia maintains a list of albums containing a hidden track. After minimal research, we believe the mysterious album Ian referenced with multiple silent tracks was Sleepify by Vulfpeck. We once again plugged Matty C's multimedia project What Am I Making. We closed by playing Ian's new single, Say Goodbye. Watch the trippy music video! Say Goodbye is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Ian has an abundance of music available on Spotify and YouTube. We especially recommend Panic Induced Love (the album we reviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod), his Building A Song Series, and his Bo Burnham-inspired video “Why Do I Eat So Much Cheese?”. Up next… A Fever You Can't Sweat Out by Panic! At the Disco Ian also randomly selected our next Jukebox episode, Professional Rapper by Lil Dicky, submitted by Dinos Korominas. This episode is scheduled to drop on July 12, 2024. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. Barry and Abigail discuss The Same Old Blood Rush With a New Touch by Cute Is What We Aim For and sample Kitty Kibble, Sweet Sinsations, Kiss of Death, and Class And Sophistication Orange Cremsicle IPA from Yeasty Brews Artisanal Beers in Lauderhill, Florida. Special thanks to Dan Martinelli, Co-Owner of Yeasty Brews, for sitting down with us to discuss the history of the brewery! Dan previously served as Assistant Brewer for Fat Point Brewing in Punta Gorda, Florida (now located in Sarasota, Florida); Director of Brewing for LauderAle Brewery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Lead Brewer for Fort Myers Brewing Company in Fort Myers, Florida. Abigail's voice recently appeared on the local NPR affiliate in Gainesville, Florida, WUFT, as a voice actor in Alena Poulin's podcast Storm Memory! Abigail appears in Episode 1 - Atsena Otie's Ancient Past. Alena has previously been name-dropped in (and was largely responsible for) both The Fizzy Hops (The Happy Fits & Tuckahoe Brewing Company) and Cascadia (Marianas Trench and Cascade Brewing). Barry and Abigail discuss Astoria by Marianas Trench and sample Vernal Equinox, Rose City Sour, and Sang Rosé from Cascade Brewing in Beaverton, Oregon. If you are interested in some of the backstories behind these songs, we recommend you read through the Genius entries for this album! Josh Ramsay, the lead vocalist and songwriter of Marianas Trench, co-wrote and produced Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. This is referenced in the Marianas Trench song POP 101! Abigail first heard this album while traveling back from The Mowgli's concert in 2019. Listen to our episode on The Mowgli's, Where'd Your Civility Go? (The Mowgli's & Civil Society Brewing). Astoria (the song) reminded Abigail of both Jumpstarted by Jukebox the Ghost and Band on the Run by Paul McCartney and Wings. Yesterday was written as a tribute to Footloose by Kenny Loggins Abigail believes the percussion in This Means War sounds like I Just Can't Wait to Be King from The Lion King soundtrack. We felt like getting a little weird this episode. Oozlefinch Beers & Blending from Virginia has made their way over to the European webshops. Crazy Pants is a sour ale with tangerine, orange, guanabana, vanilla and lactose. It's a delicious fruit burst. Cascade Brewing is known for their sour beers and this one keeps that legacy alive. Pistil Whipped is infused with saffron and chamomile. The enjoyment will depend on how much you enjoy saffron and/or chamomile. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #cascadebrewing #sourbeer #oozlefinch #guanabana #sourale

There's no such thing as a free lunch. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. You've heard phrases like this your entire life but are they true? And how can we specifically apply them to our personal finances? We had fun talking about some common money phrases earlier this year, but since then we've realized that there were a bunch of good ones we didn't cover! So we figured it was a good idea to hit up even more common money phrases that we've all heard and dissect them. And the reason we feel this is surprisingly important is because the sayings we hear can often bore into our brains and if we hear them enough we believe them as fact. But many of these common sayings have flaws in them or are just downright wrong. So have a listen as we think through some more money sayings and how they apply to our personal finances. During this episode we enjoyed an Elderberry Northwest Sour Ale by Cascade Brewing! And please help us to spread the word by letting friends and family know about How to Money! We're kicking off the week by answering listener questions! And if you have a question that you'd like for us to answer on the show, we'd love for you to submit your own via HowToMoney.com/ask/ , send us your voice memo! 1 - Is my job worth the awful commute? 2 - How can I hang out with my friends without spending a ton of money? 3 - Does it make sense to contribute to both an HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) 4 - Should I pay off my mom's credit cards or car in order to help her with her finances? 5 - What's the best way to grow money that I'll need in 2 or 3 years? During this episode we enjoyed a 2017 Kriek by Cascade Brewing! And please help us to spread the word by letting friends and family know about How to Money! Honey bees are so cool. A honey bee worker lives for just 5 or 6 weeks during the summer, but in that time she’ll fly about 500 miles visiting 20,000 individual flowers. She’ll fly until her wings literally start to fail and fall off, and by the end of her life she’ll have made about a 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey. There were several beverages in antiquity that were fermented from honey, many of which have survived today. Mead is fermented entirely from honey, while braggot is basically a hybrid of beer and mead. In recent history, Belgian brewers have proven adept at brewing biere de miel, less a style than a group of beers that incorporate honey. And from there, modern craft brewers have started putting honey into more and more styles. In today’s episode we talk with professionals who work in honey, beer, and chocolate about the use of honey in our favorite indulgences.Timeline of interviews:6:50-23:20, 38:25-51:35, 1:07:00-1:07:45 - Keith Seiz & Alison Conklin from the National Honey Board23:20-33:57 - Danny Connors from Rogue Ales51:35-1:06:45 - Anna Seear from Ritual ChocolateChocolate bars discussed in this episode include Ritual Honeycomb Toffee, Ritual Pine Nut, Ritual Aprés, and Ritual Lavender Juniper.Beers and breweries discussed in this episode include Rogue Honey Kolsch and Cascade Brewing. You can learn more about the Honey Beer Competition and enter your commercial beers here. You can learn more about GloryBee and order their honey here. You can learn more about Hollow Tree Honey and order their honey here. The music for this episode was sampled from an instrumental version of the song “Free” written and performed by indie folk musician Anna ps from her 2016 album of the same name. You can find out more about Anna at her website.Guests:Alison Conklin joined the National Honey Board’s Ingredient Marketing Team in 2016. She enjoys her time traveling the country educating food and beverage manufacturers about using honey and is always ready to conduct a honey tasting or talk about her favorite furry little friends, honey bees. Before working for the National Honey Board, Alison worked in public relations and marketing, but she finds that talking about honey is a pretty sweet gig. Keith Seiz has been immersed in the food and beverage industries for the last 20 years, first as a journalist covering commercial bakery trends and today as an ingredient marketing expert for the National Honey Board. In his current role, Keith spends most of his year traveling the country talking to distillers, brewers, bakers and food manufacturers about how to make better products with honey. It’s his passion, and one that has him working with companies ranging from craft breweries to global food brands.Danny Connors is the Innovation Brewer at Rogue Ales & Spirits. He has been at Rogue for over a decade and is responsible for experimenting and creating new, innovative beers at our Eastside Pilot Brewery in Portland, Oregon. Previously, Danny worked as Head Brewer at Buckman Brewery. Danny lives in Portland with his wife and daughters.Anna Seear is the co-founder and co-owner of Ritual Chocolate. Born in the Essex countryside of England and now residing in the Utah mountains, she is inspired every day by nature, the outdoors, and eating well. When she isn't immersed in all things chocolate, she can be found out on a mountain trail, biking, skiing, or hiking with her husband and two dogs.
Stefan and Martin both blindly reached into their fridges and brought something to the show to review. Stefan knows how much Martin loves a new brewery check-in and was very excited to bring a new beer from Abomination called Wandering Into the Fog - Nelson Sauvin. Martin knows how much Stefan loves Flemmish Red Ales and was very excited to bring Cascade Brewing's version of a Flemmish Red Ale called Sang Rouge. Love abounds.
In this episode we achieve another one of our 2021 goals, by visiting Cascade Brewing. Best way to sum up this episode? Kiersten finds her happy aka “hoppy” place. We also debut a new rendition of our opening song, as well as do an “on air” tasting of a very unique beer. Grab your favorite sour, sit back and enjoy this fun filled episode.
The Dyatlov Pass incident has kept people guessing for decades since the 1950s, so much so that the case has even been reopened. Experienced hikers getting freaked out, leaving their tents in the dead of night during sub-zero temperatures, and getting maimed and murdered by god knows what. But the call was coming from inside the tent, as it seems they all clawed and cut their way out randomly as they were set to sleep for the day. Crazy, crazy stuff. So we sip a great beer in Cascade Brewing's Cranberry Sour and talk about all of the facts, and then all of the crazy theories that are out there, from hallucinatory reindeer piss to the abominable snowman, and everything in between.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/beerfreaks)

In this episode Mike and Bret talk to Kevin Martin, Director of Brewery Operations at Cascade about this and many other topics.

This episode was recorded over a span of 3 weeks during the COVID Stay at Home Order. Once upon a time, North West IPAs gained momentum and took over as the dominant beer style. Meanwhile, one brewery took a sharp turn away from the mainstream. In doing so, it created its own style of very special beer, the Pacific North West Sour. In the fourth episode of 1859 Magazine's Beerlandia Podcast, from Statehood Media, we share the illustrious story of Cascade Brewing.

Art Larrance is one of the seven founding fathers of the Oregon craft beer industry. He's helped the brewpub law get passed, found Portland Brewing, the Oregon Brewers Festival (OFB), Cascade Brewing and the sour beer movement, as well as introducing the NW Sour Ale. Today we hear about the history of the man himself, his journeys accross the globe, his tribulation through untried waters against all odds, and rise of one of the most complex and misunderstood styles of beer. Last week we brought you to the House of Sour. This week, travel West to a place where it all began, The Lodge at Cascade Brewing. John is back to tell his tales from Bend and Eugene, Ryan gets excited about OBF, Bronwyn gets planty with our guest, and Damian gose Primordial. Proving that time and experience, is a key ingredient of the best sours this side of the Willamette River, on this episode of Brew Happy!
The House of Sour is a great name for a place where the best of Cascade Brewing's Barrel House is yours for the taking. Joined by "Big Mike" Mathis and Grant Richie to enlighten us about their bright tangy treats, their work with Surfrider PDX (non-profit), their Coral Horizon unveiling at this month's OBF, and their upcoming Raid the Cellar event. You'll be learning about the complexities of sour making, the time and patience it takes, and how certain radical ingredients require delicate balance. As a bonus we have Brew News from afar brought to us by our very own Matthew Harhai back from China, and our guest Jim Sullens from the Oregon Brew Crew and the Beijing Homebrew Society. These two have some inside knowledge about how thigs are done in another land. Damian learns about Paw Paw fruit, Ryan reveals his passion for peaches, Bronwyn fondly recalls her reunion with a Strupe Waffle Stout. Sour power, barrels of fun, fresh air, and brewing at unusual altitudes, on this episode of Brew Happy!
This week D Lo travels to Cascade Brewing Barrel House on Belmont in Portland’s famed SE. Known as the “House of Sours,” Cascade Brewing is known for its world class sour ales using almost exclusively fresh ingredients from here in the Pacific Northwest. Creative, original and unbelievably good, the sours that dominate the tap list at Cascade Brewing are in a class all by themselves. Find out how it started and where it’s going on this week’s edition of Drink Local.
You don’t have to be a millionaire to be a successful real estate investor. Chad Carson, our $Pro this week, is here to explain how even a small, effective real estate portfolio can lead to reaching your financial goals in a short period of time. He illustrates this with an example of a couple reaching financial independence with only five properties, not hundreds! Having greater financial freedom and flexibility with your time will be the natural outcome of focusing on your goals, and carefully investing in real estate can take you there. During this episode we enjoyed a Primordial Noir by Cascade Brewing which you can find and learn all about on Untappd. A massive thanks for Alex in Oregon for donating this beer to the show!
