Does your mum make you feel bad about your body? Does she comment on your weight or tell you how much to eat?Your mum may never stop dieting. Or commenting on your weight. This is a sad – but important thing to realise – your mother may never change. Luckily, you can change how you respond to her comments – and see them for what they are, disordered eating and really crumby body image compounded over many years. Unfortunately, this is a concept familiar to so many people – including today's guest, Jess Robinson. Jess is an award-winning British actor and celebrated voice artist. Yet behind the spotlight, she is battling with body image and diet culture. I was so excited to chat with Jess because she doesn't shy away from vulnerability. We rewind to her upbringing, where her mother's diet pursuits and comments lead to so many years pursuing an unattainable body. I loved this chat, we chatted about shedding harmful narratives, embracing intuitive eating, and establishing strong boundaries to protect ourselves from other people's comments. But the best part of Jess' Real Story – is how incredibly far she has already come. And I know her life will continue to be filled with those light-bulb moments. Realising how GOOD life can actually be, without dieting. Ps. If you adored Jess as much as I did - check her out on Instagram. Want help with binge or emotional eating? I think you'll get a lot of value from my FREE 5-day course, in which I teach you strategies that helped me to skip the cravings and feel in control around food. Performing regularly since 2004's appearance on Dead Ringers, various roles in the audio adventures of Doctor Who from Big Finish, and one of the “we need a voice” actors called on by the Horrible Histories troupe, Jess Robinson has been in the business for well over a decade before making it to the Fringe. 2016 saw impressionist Jess Robinson's third show at the Edinburgh Fringe. I,pressive opens with a promise of 99 voices in the first 5 minutes before a gentler pace kicked in and a storytelling hour took over… with a bit of help from both a live band and many of those aforementioned 99 voices. Since then there are more accomplishments, and Robinson has picked up a Gold Medal for ‘Best Entertainment Podcast' in 2021 with Stars in Your Ears. But now, back to 2016, back to Impressive, and always remember: The show is finished, don't try and get tickets.

One of the most exciting performers within British entertainment, writer, actor, comedian and podcaster Jess Robinson wasn't always destined for a career in comedy and instead cut her teeth within the world of musical theatre. As a child, her mum recalls making costumes for her to perform her own performances in their living room. Attending the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, her passion lay in music, with cultivating a strong and versatile singing voice. On graduation, Jess secured the lead role in the theatrical interpretation of Little Voice at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford Upon Avon. This was the first time that Jess had considered playing around with voices in an attempt to mimic a particular character. Jane Horrocks' voice in the 1998 film is so distinctive that it almost encourages impersonating and therefore Jess's first impression was born.

Ever struggled with feelings of unworthiness or immense amounts of shame and guilt? Our guest Jess Robinson was unfortunately all too familiar with those feelings. Having met a lifetime of obstacles and pain, Jess had hit a rock bottom that even she herself thought she would never emerge from. But instead of falling victim to life's painful circumstances, Jess not only survived but thrived from it all. Tune in to uncover her story, and see how even in the darkest of times, the universe will find a way to put it all together for you one piece at a time. Find out how she turned her life around and learn more about her pursuit of a more fulfilling, conscious life.    KEY POINTS / MAIN TAKEAWAYS: Jess's moment of transformation.  Jess's holistic health and wellness journey.  How the universe places people and opportunities in front of you.  The importance of being honest and having compassion for yourself.  The struggles of divorce and parenting.  Why the thoughts of others do not matter.  Taking charge of your decisions and your life.  Embracing your mistakes and imperfections.  The power of mindfulness practice.  How to reconnect with yourself.    QUOTABLES: “If you have a dream in your heart, it's meant to be yours and the universe will help you achieve it. If you can think it, it can happen.” “I'd rather be full of mistakes and have compassion for myself and continue to be on the path of releasing shame and forgiving myself but living true, than being an actress in my own life.”   PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: Visit Jess's website at https://gypsyvida.net/   Follow Wendy on social media and share the love! The actress and comedian Jess Robinson tells Michael Berkeley how her training as a classical singer informs her impressions of a vast range of singers, including Kate Bush, Bjork, Lady Gaga, Billie Holiday and Julie Andrews. A regular on Radio 4’s The Now Show, Dead Ringers, and 15 Minute Musicals, Jess made her name starring on stage in Little Voice and playing Joan Collins’ daughter in Full Circle. Her musical impressions propelled her to the semi finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2017 and she’s currently on tour with her show No Filter. Jess chooses songs by Samuel Barber and Debussy that were favourites from her classical singing lessons, and pieces that remind her of the rich musical heritage of her family, including a 20th-century organ prelude that she plays in her local church as a double act with her mother – her mother plays the keyboards but Jess plays the pedals, as her mother’s legs are too short to reach them! And we hear Jess’s grandmother singing a traditional Yiddish song, recorded after she arrived in Britain on one of the very last Kindertransports in 1939. RHLSTP #188: Jess Robinson - Doctors and Nurses. Richard welcomes an audience member who has come all the way from America JUST to see him, and boy is he pleased about that? His guest is the multi-talented singer, comedian and impressionist, Jess Robinson. She talks about the decision to do Britain's Got Talent and the seemingly shocking truth about some of the contestants; how she chanced into impressionism thanks to an acting audition; what kind of crimes Noddy can solve in this crazy PC world that had dulled Enid Blyton's fine morality; and questionable fashion choices. Is the voice behind Virgin train toilets someone famous? What kind of genitals does a Merman have? What have the Chuckle Brothers smeared on Jess' face? What nerdy madness drives impressionists? Who was the celebrity gimp who danced with Vaginal Tap? Is marriage a good idea? And most importantly, has Jess Robinson ever met Brian Blessed? This is the only podcast where you'll be able to find out.SUPPORT THE SHOW!Check out our website and become a badger and see extra content http://rhlstp.co.ukSee details of the RHLSTP tour dates http://richardherring.com/gigsBuy DVDs and Books at http://gofasterstripe.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The actor and producer Greg Wise is brother of Clare Wise, who died of cancer in 2016. Greg has co-written a book about how he and Clare dealt with her illness - the appointments, the hair loss, the chemo, the showers... and the cat, Grably. Jess French is a zoologist, naturalist and entomologist and presents CBeebies Minibeast Adventure with Jess. Her passion for scorpions and tarantulas began while helping her dad with his exotic invertebrate-breeding business and often acted as animal handler when he supplied them for TV shows. Jess Robinson came from a musical family and trained as a classical singer. She explains how she got waylaid by impressions and vocal gymnastics, and ran away to join the circus. She has since performed at the Edinburgh Festival and reached the semi-final of Britain's Got Talent. Spencer Conway, English teacher, decided at forty-two to abandon The Canterbury Tales and make his own epic pilgrimage to Africa, which he circumnavigated on a motorbike. He has done the same in South America, a journey from which he's just returned. He talks about crashing in the salt flats in Bolivia and being stung by a killer wasp. Joanna Trollope chooses her Inheritance Tracks La Mer by Charles Trenet and Mythical Kings and Iguanas by Dory Previn. Not That Kind of Love, by Clare & Greg Wise is published on 22 February.
