Amanda Holden was planning a home birth with her first baby, having hired a midwife she loved. When she reached 42 weeks, her midwife terminated her care abruptly, due to Colorado state law prohibiting midwives from attending late-term home births. With a heavy heart but optimistic mindset, Amanda and her husband made the decision to birth in a hospital rather than have an unattended home birth. Using the education she had under her belt by that point, Amanda rallied herself into believing her hospital birth would go mostly according to her plan of a natural, undisturbed birth. Once in labor, she settled into her hospital bed with a pink satin eye mask over her eyes, having no idea what she was about to endure: being relentlessly badgered, labeled, patronized, and threatened throughout her labor. She declined continuous monitoring and vaginal exams and the doctors retaliated by overwhelming her with a roomful of strangers watching her laboring naked in the tub, while "reporting" her over the phone in her presence. The doctor even threatened that Amanda's baby would likely need to be airlifted on life support to another hospital as soon as she was born, and that Amanda wouldn't be able to go with her baby. Meanwhile, there was no legitimate reason to suspect the baby would need life support. At one point, the doctor even brought in a male security guard into Amanda's birth space, claiming she (the doctor) didn't feel "safe" around Amanda's husband, who simply advocated for Amanda through the birth. When it was finally time to give birth, Amanda was tricked into lying down and then forcefully put on her back against her will. She says she gave birth "feeling hated" by everyone in the room, and one nurse privately told Amanda's mother she had seen meth patients in labor treated with more respect than Amanda. When Amanda gave birth vaginally to her girl, she felt elated, and noticed every medical staff in the room stared at her and her baby with utterly joyless expressions, after all that Amanda had achieved. Amanda and her husband have been doing somatic healing to process their experience, but she is absolutely clear that the birth itself caused her no distress or discomfort. Despite all drama, Amanda's story is ultimately inspiring because of her and her husband's resolve not to succumb under truly extraordinary pressure. **********Down to Birth is sponsored by:Vitality: An athleisure brand made for women, by women, designed with style and comfort for pregnancy and beyond.Davin & Adley-- The perfect nursing and pumping bra combinedSilverette Nursing Cups -- Soothe and heal sore nipples with 925 silver nursing cups.Postpartum Soothe -- Herbs and padsicles to heal and comfort.Needed -- Our favorite nutritional products to nourish yourself before, during, and after pregnancy.Use promo code: DOWNTOBIRTH for all of the above sponsors. In this 50th episode celebration, Liz and Michelle chat about turning 50 themselves and the idea of making a 50 at 50 list. They are then joined by celebrity journalist Suzanne Baum who shares some of her own 50 at 50 list, including facing her fears of heights. Suzanne opens up about her career interviewing huge names like David Beckham and Amanda Holden, and how she has used her platform for important issues like the Nicola Bulley case. She gives advice to aspiring journalists and talks about embarrassing moments, dream interviewees, and how certain hard-hitting stories have affected her. An insightful look into the world of journalism and the power of being your true self after 50. KEY TAKEAWAYS Suzanne has built great celeb relationships through integrity e.g. not sensationalising, but she also enjoys breaking real news stories. Turning 50 has given Suzanne the courage to stand up to dodgy media outlets and represent brands she believes in. Mind over matter is key to Suzanne facing fears like heights for her 50 at 50 list. The Nicola Bulley story and talking to people affected by Covid were emotionally tough for Suzanne as a journalist. Suzanne's dream interviewee is the Spurs football team to impress her kids! Peter Andre and Amanda Holden are two of the nicest celebs Suzanne has interviewed. Suzanne's advice for aspiring journalists is don't do it for the money, focus on digital skills, and always research your subject. BEST MOMENTS "I think it makes the reader be able to relate to you as well because you're talking about something so personal and so tragic, I think makes it really meaningful." "I'll tell you what trips me up is the pronunciation of names. So, Virgil van Dyck, who I was interviewing last week, he's... a very famous Liverpool player with 40 million followers. I kept thinking, oh my god, I'm so gonna just say, I'm gonna say his name wrong." But age is a gift and you know every day that we do get it. It's a wonderful thing that we get to do things like this, like the podcast, reinvent ourselves in our lives over 50. If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, and review it on your podcast platform. Karl Willett is a top international stylist having worked in the fashion industry for 20 years building a vibrant portfolio of celebrity clients including Amanda Holden, Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Hudson, Paloma Faith, Nicole Scherzinger, Jessie J and Beverley Knight. He is also a happily married, family man with ‘miracle' twin boys being born by surrogacy.Karl has the family, a career that he loves, status and recognition, friends and connections, but what did it take to get to this point? From having no styling experience but securing a 2 week internship at Selfridges and then landing his first celebrity client through a freelance contact. To styling and building Paloma Faith into a brand and fashion icon, Karl's strategy of fake it till you make it, take risks and hustle hard paid off. Behind the illusion of seamless, “fun, glitz and glamour”, is the reality of working in a competitive industry where you don't show weaknesses and with in-demand clients, where you assist and style rather than burden. When Karl struggled mentally and felt “nothing was good enough” he knew he had to make changes. Karl envisioned being a dad before meeting his husband but that certainty became hope as they searched the globe for a surrogate. After one failed pregnancy and 19 weeks into the second, when one of the twins' sacks ruptured, hope dwindled and despair unfolded until week 35 when both baby boys were born healthy. Identifying that his upbringing gave him confidence to go after his dreams and further strengthened by the solid relationship he created with his partner, it enabled his career to flourish, it left Karl feeling that he has a lot to give “I feel my purpose here on earth is bigger than my job, my family and my loved ones”, “I almost attract people that might need a bit of support”.Listen to this episode if: You are considering surrogacy. You are interested in fashion industry/styling You have struggled mentally at work or in business. Steve Hewlett is a ventriloquist from Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. He was a finalist on the seventh series of Britain's Got Talent. Hewlett has previously headlined Cromer Pier.He auditioned with a puppet called 'Arthur Lager', depicted as an old man with grey hair. Hewlett's audition was aired in a montage on 18 May 2013. He made it through, and subsequently through to the semi-finals. He appeared again in the semi-final on 1 June with Arthur Lager, and a puppet designed to resemble Simon Cowell, one of the judges. The routine involved Arthur flirting with Amanda Holden. He finished in the top three, and with eventual winners Attraction already through to the final, it was down to the judges to choose the second place in the final between Hewlett and Jordan O'Keefe. It was a split decision, so it was referred back to the public vote, revealing that with 15.1% of the vote, O'Keefe was through to the final, compared to Hewlett's 12%. This left six singing acts in the final, which generated complaints; Holden defended this, and the number of singers on the show, saying "We left it to the public, they wanted Jordan so that was the right decision. You can't argue with the public's decision."However, earlier in the week, it was revealed that the judges would choose a wildcard act out of the third-placed finishers to compete in the final. Hewlett was seen as the popular choice. It was revealed on the night that Hewlett was indeed the wildcard. He performed again in the final with Arthur Lager (now wearing a Onesie) and the puppet of Simon Cowell (wearing a swimsuit and life jacket), as well as a puppet of Sinitta, along with a musical number in the shape of "We Go Together" from Grease at the end, involving the Simon and Sinitta puppets. Despite rave reviews from the judges, Hewlett finished fourth, just narrowly missing out on the top three with 14.7% of the vote, compared to Richard & Adam's 15.4%.It was revealed the day after the final that Hewlett had been signed to the entertainment agency ROAR Global. In 2014, Hewlett led a team of challengers on the TV quiz show Eggheads. He took the puppet Arthur Lager with him. Going Solo In 2016 Steve appeared as a guest on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing reading Terms & Conditions with his new sidekick Rod Vegas. Also in 2016, Hewlett supported Kenny G on his UK tour in Manchester, Birmingham ending at London's Royal Albert Hall which was followed by touring America & England in the Andy Williams Christmas Extravaganza with The Osmonds. He also supported Jimmy Osmond on his Moon River & Me Tour in a week's residence at Falls Casino, Niagara Falls, Canada in 2017.His first UK Tour ‘Thinking Inside The Box' was filmed in The Haymarket Basingstoke and 2nd ‘30 Years of talking To Myself‘ was filmed at Blackpool's Pleasure Beach in 2018.From November 5th to December 23rd 2019 Steve proudly returned & hosted The Thursford Spectacular in Norfolk for the 4th time. His characters included Arthur Lager, Vinnie the Vulture & a member of the audience twice a day for 7 weeks. In July 2020 Steve started a new Podcast project ‘Eyes & Teeth' where Steve talks to his favourite Comedy Icons.
