RNIB recently held the ‘Technology For Life Fair' in Belfast, showcasing assistive technology products in Northern Ireland. Joe Kenny from RNIB NI gave his thoughts on how events like this can positively impact the blind and partially sighted community in Northern Ireland. As part of RNIB Connect Radio's 20th anniversary celebrations, the team were set a challenge to find activities that blind people could excel in. Members of UK sight loss charity RNIB's board and executive committee visited Belfast to meet and talk, with staff, volunteers and customers. There was a lot to get through as they looked at how the organisation looks to the future and what it's service users want prioritised. In this EP I speak with legendary Athletic Therapist Joe Kenny. Joe was for close to 40 years, the Lead Athletic Therapist at Brock University in Niagara, Ontario. Joe retired recently, and his legacy at the university is formidable. He is perhaps one of, if not the longest-serving Head AT at a major University in Canada and he has mentored and served countless students and student-athletes throughout his career. Joe and I go way, back, we met many years ago while serving on committees for the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association. We always enjoyed connecting at meetings and conferences. I always admired Joe's ability to be serious, focused, and on point in his work, but also able to enjoy life and have fun. We had a lot of fun together over the years, that is until he accidentally punched me in the nose on the dance floor! Joe has been married to his wife Karen for 30 years, and they have two grown children who remain the light of his life. With the opening of the Biddle Housing Opportunities Center in August 2016, the closing of the New Life Evangelistic Center this spring, and synthetic marijuana overdoses among the poor, homelessness has been a major topic of discussion lately in the St. Louis area. Playing a major role in those discussions is St. Patrick Center (stpatrickcenter.org), the Catholic Charities agency with the goal of building permanent, positive change for people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.
