The Liberal Party's Online Harms Act (Bill C-63) was tabled at the end of February, proposing to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to qualify online “hate speech” as discrimination. If passed, individuals would gain the ability to file anonymous complaints against other Canadians for engaging in speech they consider to be hateful on social media. If found guilty, individuals can be fined up to $50,000 or be penalized with life in prison for “hateful conduct.” Meghan Murphy speaks with John Carpay, founder and president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), about the bill and its consequences. For many Canadians, it felt like their victory too. Yesterday, Justice Mosley ruled that the Emergencies Act, declared by Prime Minister Trudeau, was illegal. After years of feeling that all institutions had failed, finally there is a recognition that the Freedom Convoy was not the heinous enterprise described by the prime minister and portrayed in the media. It's unclear what effect this judgement will have on the criminal charges against Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, but it is the beginning of renewed hope for the country.
