This summer, Kansas voted NO on a state Constitutional amendment that would have banned abortion.  Ashley All, Spokesperson for Kansans for Constitutional Freedom, joins Roger to discuss how her group mobilized voters in a deeply conservative state to show up to protect abortion rights and what kind of messaging will work best with red state voters in this November's midterms.

On August 2nd, voters in Kansas came out in droves to protect abortion access in the state through a ballot measure. It was the first opportunity for voters to cast their support for abortion access since the overturn of Roe v. Wade. For many, Kansas was proof in the pudding: Americans overwhelmingly support reproductive rights. This November, a slew of other states have ballot measures that will similarly allow the people to decide if abortion will be protected in their state. In Michigan, the measure was only just recently added to the ballot after 750,000 people signed a petition to ensure that Michiganders would have a choice to protect abortion access in their state Constitution. To protect abortion access in a post-Roe reality, we need to pursue every avenue possible, including at the ballot box. Today, we're speaking with Rachel Sweet, campaign manager for Kansans for Constitutional Freedom who led the ballot measure to a sweeping victory for reproductive rights. And, also, Connie Kross, a retiree-turned-repro-rights-champion who volunteers for Reproductive Freedom For All, the ballot measure campaign in Michigan. These two have rolled up their sleeves and recruited their friends, family and neighbors to do the same. They are not turning back. And neither are we.

We've interviewed our next guest several times. Keith Wilson, K.C. is a senior lawyer from Alberta who works with the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms. One of the cases we've focused on with him is the case of Brian Peckford and other plaintiffs, who filed a lawsuit on constitutional grounds challenging Trudeau's ban on unvaccinated people flying. In the second largest country in the world, one of the coldest countries in the world, to tell people to they can't fly and have to drive because they're unvaccinated — or they can ride in a bus — because apparently the virus knows to not attack you if you're in a bus but it will attack you if you're in a plane? There's no science there. This lawsuit was filed many months ago and it has taken months to proceed, for various government witnesses to answer questions under oath. And it's on the eve of trial, but as you probably know, a few months ago suspended his ban on unvaccinated people flying. And so the government is saying that this lawsuit is now moot and shouldn't be heard at all. But I think it's important that the lawsuit be heard. We need to know, was it legal? Could they do it again? I think our judges have been too deferential these past two and a half years. On tonight's show, we have a feature interview on that subject with Keith Wilson. FINALLY: Your messages to me!

Content warning: this episode contains frank discussions about abortion and the loss of a child. Ever since the fall of Roe v Wade - or actually, ever since the Supreme Court opinion leaked - we've been talking about abortion. But so far we haven't done a deep dive into one of the most controversial aspects: late term abortion. So that's exactly what we're doing today.Late term abortion isn't actually a medical term, it's a political term used to scare people, and you'll hear more about that in today's interview. But before that, Rachel Vindman, Jasmine Clark, and Amanda Weinstein are joined by Ashley All. Ashley is the Communications Director with Kansans for Constitutional Freedom, one of the organizations that made this month's abortion victory in Kansas possible.Rachel then sits down for a very honest and meaningful conversation with Robin Utz. Robin is a mom, a storyteller, and an abortion advocate. She started a website to share her own later-term abortion story and to encourage open-minded and compassionate discussions about infertility and abortion. Robin shares the circumstances of her own abortion, the disconnect between right-wing politicians and most Americans' views on abortion, and what we can do to help stand up for reproductive freedom. You can learn more at Robin's website, DefendingGrace, or at WhoNotWhen. Finally, Amanda and Jasmine raise a glass to the weather holding out for Girl Scouts and a great campaign video, and Rachel toasts to the brave women of Ukraine in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”On September 1st, Red Wine & Blue will be hosting a virtual Troublemaker Turnout event with Heather Cox Richardson. The first chance voters had to weigh in on abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade was in the reliably conservative state of Kansas. And, despite all odds, Kansas voters rejected the GOP-led effort to restrict abortion. Gloria gets the details on the big victory for abortion rights from Rachel Sweet, campaign manager for Kansans for Constitutional Freedom. Gloria and Rachel discuss how the campaign built a pro-choice coalition across party lines, what they heard from voters on abortion as they canvassed the state, and why she knows the fight in Kansas isn't over, despite this win. Plus, could this victory be a roadmap for other states considering abortion bans?   This podcast is presented by Neighborhood Villages, and is brought to you with generous support from Imaginable Futures, Care For All Children by the David and Laura Merage Foundation, and Spring Point Partners.   Joining Lemonada Premium is a great way to support our show and get bonus content. Last week, was a troubling one for those of us in the pro-life community. Violence that had been directed at pro-life organizations across the country, suddenly hit close to home. A Buffalo, NY pregnancy center suffered an arsonist attack at the hands of pro-abortion activists. In response, Gov. Kathy Hochul offered only cold comfort to the pro-life community in her milquetoast remarks. Additionally, there was a Democratic primary debate last week. Though it was the second of the debate series, it was the first in which the incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul participated. Though the debate occurred on the same day as the Buffalo arson, both moderators and candidates failed to address the attack. However, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms did offer some questions that we believe should have been asked at the event. Finally, an armed man was arrested outside the home of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. It's a reminder that we need to keep the justices of the High Court and their families in our prayers. It's a tense time in America, and there are those who would usurp and undermine the judicial branch of government by directing violence toward it. Peckford was born in Whitbourne, Newfoundland, on August 27, 1942, and grew up in Whitbourne, Marystown, and Lewisporte. He holds a Bachelor of Education degree, having also completed postgraduate work in English Literature, Education, Psychology, and French Literature. Prior to entering politics, he was a high school teacher in rural Newfoundland. He was first elected to the House of Assembly in 1972 at the age of twenty-nine and was appointed parliamentary assistant to the premier, Honourable Frank Moores, in 1973. The following year he was appointed minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and in 1976 held the portfolios of minister of: Mines and Energy; and Rural and Northern Development. At the age of thirty-six, he was elected leader of the provincial Progressive Conservative Party and premier of the Province, becoming the youngest first minister in over 100 years. It was Pickford's administration that fought for and achieved a new, ground-breaking arrangement with the federal government called the Atlantic Accord, which has become the template for all exploration and development of offshore oil and gas resources in Canada. It is under this arrangement that the oil fields of Hibernia, Terra Nova, and White Rose have been developed and are producing today. It is as a result of the revenues from these developments that the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has achieved “have” status, the first time since becoming a part of Canada in 1949. Peckford retired from public life in 1989 and established his own consulting business serving government and business clients in North America and Europe. In 1982, Peckford received the Vanier Award as an outstanding young Canadian. Thank you for joining this week's edition of the Albany Update. In federal news, the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge to President Joe Biden's COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Oral arguments will be heard on January 7, 2022. New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms is signing onto an amicus brief opposing the mandate on religious liberty grounds. We'll delve into more detail in today's program. In a similar vein, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced her intention to seek a mandatory COVID vaccination for students attending school, both public and private. Our organization remains opposed and is urging the Governor and the State Legislature to go slow on this controversial measure. Then, every January there is a large pro-life event held in Washington, D.C. that celebrates the sanctity of human life. This year's event is expected to be bigger than ever. We'll tell you what it is and how you can participate. Finally, we've been noticing a growing trend. Our office has been inundated with requests regarding various social media memes that are circulating. Some well-intentioned individuals are reposting these memes, without first finding out if they are factual. It causes confusion in certain circles and costs conservatives credibility. Today, we'll gently remind listeners to seek truth in all areas of their lives—even social media interactions. Let's get started. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/albanyupdate/support

Thank you for joining this week's edition of the Albany Update. We have some troubling news to share. Despite knowing that its evangelical base is not on board, Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, announced that the GOP was launching an LGBT initiative. The big state news of the week was the release of the Assembly Judiciary Committee's Cuomo investigation—and it's damning. Next, and on a more positive note, Nourish New York, a bill supported by New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, was signed into law. Then, with the oral arguments in a case that could take an axe to the very root of the 1973 Supreme Court decision known as Roe being heard this week, we'll spend a few moments talking about life after Roe. Thank you for joining this week's edition of the Albany Update. Late last week news broke that former Governor Andrew Cuomo was being charged with a misdemeanor in the alleged groping of a former aide. It's unlikely that Cuomo will receive any real consequence. It's a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a year behind bars, but as a first-time offender the ex-governor will likely only see a slap on the wrist. However, the larger question is, where is the Assembly Judiciary Committee report regarding the investigations into Andrew Cuomo? The taxpayers paid for it, deserve to see it, and that report might just reveal what was truly going on during Cuomo's disgraceful tenure. When Governor Kathy Hochul ascended to the vacancy created by Cuomo's resignation, she made it clear that she would be seeking a full term. However, State Attorney General Letitia James is inching closer toward an imminent announcement of her own run. When the AG jumps in, life just became a lot more complicated for Kathy Hochul. Changing topics, we'll look at the effort to bring sports betting to New York before the Superbowl. Suffice to say, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms is not excited about this state scam to deprive its citizens of even more income and enable greater gambling addiction. Then, we'll look at what has been happening in Loudon County, VA. In that state, concerned parents are standing up to the elitists in education. Moms and dads have had enough and are going to school board meetings and engaging in ways they haven't before. 2010 saw the rise of the “Tea Party”, a movement centered around previously politically uninvolved people getting politically involved. Now, could we be seeing the rise of a “Parent Party” movement across America? Finally, it's November. A month in which our organization likes to step back and just give thanks for the goodness God has shown to us throughout the year. We've got several praises to share with you. Let's get started. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/albanyupdate/support
