Uncommon Conversations: Deep Talks with Community & DevRel Leaders
In this 35-minute convo, Joshua Zerkel, Head of Global Engagement (Community and Lifecyle) at Asana, discusses the importance of internal roadshows to evangelize community within your company, why reporting on two types of metrics—program health metrics and business impact metrics—is table stakes, and building community programs with end goals in mind.Community and DevRel leaders perform incredible feats to grow, engage, and support their communities, empower their businesses, and build products and experiences people love. Each day, they bring their companies and communities closer together. These are the stories of their work. The Uncommon community is powered by Common Room, the intelligent community growth platform that enables you to unlock community insights so you can grow happier customers, measure outcomes, and drive business impact. Learn more about how you can help your community thrive with Common Room at commonroom.io , and join the Uncommon community at commonroom.io/uncommon.
You might think you need to approach B2B and B2C communities differently. Asana's Joshua Zerkel rejects this, calling it a “false distinction.” He believes B2B communities can have the same fun, engagement, and feel of B2C communities. In this episode, Joshua shares how any B2B brand can cultivate a B2C-style community, how their Asana Together community helps drive meaningful impact, and some fun things they've built in their community that have resonated with their audience.

We had Joshua Zerkel, Head of Global Engagement Marketing at Asana to chat about why they're doubling down on community building, how they're changing and learning from doing over 200 virtual events throughout 2021, and why Joshua only uses one emoji for everything. ___________ Become an Asana Ambassador! https://asana.com/community/ambassadors ___________ Find Joshua on Social https://twitter.com/joshuazerkel https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshuazerkel
In this episode of Masters of Community, we speak with Joshua Zerkel, Head of Global Engagement Marketing (Community + Lifecycle) at Asana. He is an industry veteran in the world of community. He led the community team at Evernote and has now been at Asana for three and a half years building the community team from the ground up. While Josh began his career as a designer, the bulk of his expertise comes from voluntarily and involuntarily building communities as a consequence of helping others. In this episode, David and Josh talk about various aspects of Asana's community from an enterprise community perspective. Josh shares his two-pronged metrics focus for measuring and communicating the impact of their community team. One of the key takeaways for any new community manager from this episode is how you can grow from a one-member community team to a full-fledged enterprise-scale community behemoth. Finally, Josh helps shed light on a community operations role and how it differs from community management. Who is this episode for? Currently aspiring and first-time community managers. Three key takeaways: 1. Community metrics at Asana: They use program health metrics to get a gauge on what's happening with their community programs. They also look at business impact metrics from a marketing point of view. Community teams should communicate their value and impact across different facets of their operation such as brand, marketing, media appearances, engagement, and sales pipeline. However, if the community team has fewer resources, start small and pick the most powerful stats that you can directly impact. 2. Fundamentals of Building a Community: Your community must meet customers where they are. Some are comfortable in a small group, while others like large forums, and not everyone will come to a new website to engage in support forms. Therefore, community teams have to study their communities to gradually build a framework for each platform so that people have a variety of ways to connect. 3. Community operations: It's less about personally talking to people and more about creating systems and getting internal tools talking to each other so that you can scale your community efforts. Repeatable templates and processes created form the backbone that really helps your community efforts scale. Community registration processes can be made hassle-free through automation. Streamline your reporting tools and create dashboards to help internal stakeholders get a quick sense of how valuable your community is at any given point in time. Notable Quotes: 1. “Some people are forum people, others will never go to a forum and just want to meet in person. Others want to feel like they're part of something special and exclusive like a membership program… It's really important to think about the community expansively and think about all the different ways that your customers might want to connect with your company and with each other. So that you can build these frameworks so that they have a place to do those things.” 2. “The community program is designed to drive brand awareness, excitement, and engagement with our brand. And so while there are byproducts of our work, including creating leads, impact on the pipeline, engagement with the product retention, all of those things are not the core focus of our work, but again, we report on all of those because we know that there's impact.” Rapid-fire question answers: 1. What's your go-to pump-up? K-pop music. 2. What was the coolest news story you ever covered in your time? Helped raise awareness about mobile number portability through the story of a woman, and that story caught the attention of lawmakers. 3. What's the most impactful book you've ever read or a book that you love to give as a gift to others? A Harriet Tubman biography. 4. What's a go-to community engagement tactic or conversation starter that you love to use in your communities? Anything food-related. 5. What's your biggest pet peeve in the world of community building? A lot of people still think of community as fun or fluff or extra or something that isn't. 6. What's one community product you wish existed? A miracle API connector that connects several complicated tools to let their data flow seamlessly among each other. 7. What tools do you use? Bevy, Partner Stack, Asana, Snowflake, Common Room, Discourse, Slack - but they're trying to reduce it. 8. What's the weirdest community you've been a part of? Sci-fi and comic book conventions. 9. What's one question I didn't ask you that I should have? “Why do I do this work?” Josh is an extroverted type of introvert. By creating a community for others, he's providing that space that he personally is continually looking for. 10. If you were to find yourself on your deathbed today, what advice would you give to the rest of the world on how to live? Be more open and say yes to exploring new paths more often. You never know what that path might lead you to.

On this inaugural episode of In Systems We Trust, I sat down with Joshua Zerkel, Head of Global Community for Asana to talk through how to lead productive and efficient remote teams. No matter how organized you are or how many checklists you have, if roles and responsibilities aren't clearly defined, things will get messy. People will feel disconnected, work will fall through the cracks, and clients will be unhappy. And unhappy clients can threaten the long-term profitability and overall survival of your business.
Taking Control Of Your ProductivityLet's set the stage. The backdrop is Covid-19. You are working from home for the first time. You're sitting at your kitchen table. Your children are there homeschooling. Maybe your spouse is on the other side of the table working as well. How are you supposed to get anything done? While some of us have been working from home for years, that is not the case for many people who's job has been suddenly affected by COVID-19 and social distancing. So I sat down (virtually, of course) with Joshua Zerkel, head of Global Community at Asana. I wanted to know about his take on productivity and business continuity during this crazy time. Remote work first-timersOne of the first things we discussed was how to make that adjustment to remote work.Joshua's take is that first, you have to remove any expectation to be an expert right off the bat. You can build familiarity and normalcy though, by trying to mirror your old schedule as much as possible. This includes starting (and stopping!) work at the same time every day.Take your lunch break, or your daily walk as though you were working in the office. If you used to wake up and take a shower, continue that morning routine. Having a semblance of normalcy gives you a productive mindset.Another point we discussed is distractions. There are already many distractions at home. You can't control a lot of that, but you can control notifications settings. All the notifications are intended to serve us and make our lives easier/more effective, but it can also be overwhelming and detract from getting work done. Turn them all off other than the most important ones, manage them, or put them in do not disturb mode.In fact, Asana is in the process of releasing a new "Do not disturb mode" so you can choose when to be notified and when not to be. Setting Goals and Time ManagementI wanted to know what Joshua thinks we should know about time management. His thoughts are that none of us are really taught how to manage our time."I'm personally a big believer in getting clarity on what your goals are. Set your goals for a quarter or for the year. From those bigger goals, create projects to achieve them and further break everything down to smaller tasks."Keep that goal in mind of "What am I" or "What is my team trying to achieve?"Joshua also explains that his team meets every Monday in a zoom "virtual circle" to go over goals for the week. Go around the room and say what you'll be focused on. Then other team members can collaborate if they have the same goals for the week. It's easy to spin off in different directions without that focus.Humanity in a time of crisisThis is when we remind you to tune in to the podcast, but we will leave you with this quote."Although Asana is purchased by companies and teams, within every team there are people. Those people are real-life humans just like us. Just like we're struggling, they are struggling too.""When you talk to people now, be human. Part of productivity is just managing what's happening.
If you’re interested in Project Management tools, in the process of trying to figure out what PM tools are right for you and your team, this episode is meant for you. Nick sits down with the global head of community for Asana, Joshua Zerkel.
As a new decade dawns, Elizabeth Hotson asks if workplace design needs to be rethought to make work a more positive experience. We visit London-based customer finding company, MVF, which allows employees to bring their dogs into the office. The canine theme is continued at Sanity Marketing, where a Chihuahua called Lola calls the shots in the morning meeting. We try out the giant slide in the office of cloud computing company, Rackspace and visit The Wing which provides a work space for a mostly female membership base. We crowd into the sauna at global money transfer company Transferwise and Joshua Zerkel from technology firm, Asana in California extols the virtues of one meeting-free day a week. Meanwhile, Tom Carroll from property consultancy JLL, tells us what employees really want from workplaces. Photo Description: Some offices have a dog-friendly office policy Photo by Elizabeth Hotson

We have a first on BBF this week.. a man who is a certified professional organiser. Who in business doesn’t need to be organised? Joshua is well worth listening to because not only is he a professional organiser, he is the director of global community at Evernote: one of the most popular business apps in the world. Joshua is so organised he even uses Evernote to list his favourite burger joints around the world! See below for some of Joshua’s best productivity advice: ** ‘Busy' doesn’t mean ‘productive’. Do not aspire to be busy! When judging the quality of your output, concentrate on whether you get done what you want to get done - nothing else. ** Apps can be great for productivity but it’s important to define what your problem is before you jump in and get an app. Doing it the other way around can make you even less efficient. ** Learn to say no. You can only truly succeed in your time management if you say no at the right times. ** When assigning tasks to others, there’s no substitute for good old-fashioned conversation. Dictating tasks and deadlines to people can be easily done with today’s technology, but it is a bad habit. ** Document your processes. Only then can you delegate properly. ** With any new tool/app, you don’t need to know everything it does. Just take a small everyday task and use the tool/app to help with that, and build from there. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** Why productivity is important for small businesses ** The definition of productivity ** How modern technology has helped/hindered efficiency in business ** Time management ** Delegation ** The inner workings of Evernote Resources mentioned in this episode: ** Ben’s free business planning template can be downloaded from http://www.maxmyprofit.com.au ** Find Joshua on Twitter here ** Find Evernote on Twitter here ** The Business Brain Food Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood ** All previous BBF episodes & show notes can be found at http://www.businessbrainfood.com.au ** Twitter: https://twitter.com/bfewtrell Call to action: We’ll leave our very own Ben to give our inspirational message this week: “If this conversation with Joshua doesn’t inspire you to get organised, then nothing will!” Also, if you are enjoying these Business Brain Food podcasts, then make sure to share them via social media sites or email the links to family and friends. A lot of time and effort goes into producing each of these podcasts with the goal in mind of the more people we can inspire about business the better. You can help us do just that!
