In this Friday Conversation, we're joined by Robert Pedersen, founder of ZAGG, an innovative company that made waves with its screen protectors for electronic devices. Robert shares his journey from growing up in Utah, playing golf with his family, to the pivotal moment when ZAGG's protective film for military helicopter blades was repurposed for consumer electronics. He reflects on his love for family, how the growth of ZAGG offers some key lessons for entrepreneurs and how ZAGG evolved from humble beginnings to become a household name. Robert discusses how it's not just about having a quality product, but about building trust through branding and customer service. While screen protectors were already available, ZAGG's approach elevated the commodity through better distribution, market positioning, and a strong customer service ethos—offering 100% refunds and leveraging relationships with retailers like Best Buy. This combination led to a major breakthrough, turning a simple product into a multi-million dollar business. Another topic of conversation included the valuable lesson that entrepreneurs should focus on building a solid team based on character and trust. Competency can be learned, but a team aligned in values and passion is invaluable. As your company scales, adding specialists for specific roles is necessary, but the core of a great team is built on trust and collaboration. Robert has always had a passion for creating products and bringing ideas to life, whether it's a physical product or a service. This passion is a core part of his identity, and as someone who's always been proud to call Utah home, he sees the state following a similar journey. While Utah may not be as immediately recognizable as places like California or New York, Robert believes it is steadily making a name for itself, thanks in large part to the rise of Silicon Slopes. He often points out that Utah doesn't need to reinvent itself – the state already boasts an incredible ecosystem of businesses and innovators. What's needed is more effective marketing to showcase what's already here. Tune in to hear from this great entrepreneur.

This month we talked to Sascha Segan about the 5G spectrum auction and what it means. We also talked about how Verizon is screwing over its customers with that new spectrum it just bought. We talked a bit about Zagg and the Galaxy Watch 3, before we transitioned over into Beermkr - the connected homebrew machine. Finally, we discussed a number of phones that came out at the end of the month and had a tech yeah from Cliff on his new LG oven. There is a lot of talk out there about ‘going greener’ and being more ‘sustainable or eco’ but how many businesses are actually acting on this? Enter Jolyon Bennet – CEO and founder of Juice (mobile phone accessories manufacturer) – he is on a mission to not only ensure his company is manufacturing in a more sustainable way, but he is also rolling out an incentive to help others (even his competitors) to do the same with their own label ranges – TESCO being one of the first to work with him. On top of this, he is actually taking a hit for the environment by not increasing any of his pricing on his eco packaging so as not to put customers off buying it and to encourage more sustainable shopping. Earlier this year Juice has become the first mobile phone accessories manufacturer to completely remove single-use plastic from its packagingJuice also scooped the prestigious ‘Best Accessories Manufacturer’ award at the annual Mobile News Awards 2020 beating multi-national industry giants such as Belkin, Otter Products and Zagg to the win Jolyon's efforts have been recognised by industry professionals including Steven Pacitti, President of the International Packaging Press Organisation (IPPO). During a recent interview, Steven said: “I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to Juice and Jolyon Bennett – to find a brand that is committed to the intrinsic values and benefits that plastic brings and is prepared to go the extra yard to make it completely recycled at his own cost, is a rare breed.” Although many businesses have been helping each other throughout the pandemic, this was always part of Jolyon's wider business plan. He is making it his mission to encourage sustainable purchasing and believes that even making small changes can make a big difference.

In Part 1, I asked, “Is it ever appropriate to pay more?” I went on to describe the concerns of a restaurant owner and whether he should charge for water. Later that day, I went shopping for my Father's Day present. Since I spend a large amount of time in my car, I told Lesa I wanted a hand's free speakerphone for my car. She consented and I went shopping. My good friend and associate, Ted, has been using the BlueAnt S4 handsfree speaker phone for about six months and is very satisfied with the product. I appreciate a good referral and testimony so I decided to buy the same one. I checked out the website for retailers that sell that product. I found two popular electronic stores in my area that carry BlueAnt product and paid them a visit. This is what happened. Electronic Store #1: This is the store that Ted bought his speakerphone and I shop there often. I was asked shortly after entering the store if I needed help. I told him what I was looking for and he gave me a perplexed look. He took me to the area where this product was sold and let me know that he had never heard of BlueAnt and this was all he had available and offered no more help. I had more items on my list but the sales person dismissed me and I left the store. Electronic Store #2: Again, I was offered help immediately as I entered the store. He also led me to the handsfree speakerphone section where there were no BlueAnt handsfree speakerphones to be found. I was a little disappointed. He asked me if I could wait a moment and see if he had one in the back. I shopped for the other items on my list while I waited on his return. A few moments later, he returned with the exact unit I was looking for. Only one problem, it was about twenty-percent higher than my friend paid for his. I asked if he could match the price and he went to speak to the manager. When he returned, he told me that he could not discount the product, however, he could give me a twenty-five percent discount off my second item. I had picked up the invisibleSHIELD by ZAGG. This product when attached to the face of your smartphone will protect it and make it scratch proof. Also, if your invisibleSHIELD gets damaged, ZAGG will replace it for life. The initial price of the invisibleSHIELD was forty percent less than the other retailer. He gave me an extra twenty-five percent off plus he took the time to apply the shield to my phone. The other retailer charges eight dollars for this service. He went on to help me download an app to lengthen the life of my phone battery by two to four hours per day preventing me from buying a new battery. He provided all of this help with a great attitude and I never felt like it was an imposition. When you add it all up, did the speakerphone really cost me more? I believe it was worth the extra cost. Are you giving your customers more than they bargained for? Have a great week! Pierce

Zagg on 21st Century Television
https://www.thesaleswhisperer.com/podcast http://MakeEverySale.com *How long have you been in sales?* Started when he was 17. He was money-motivated but didn't know how he was going to do it. *How did you get started?* Took a year off of college to sell Motorla Razors and Q when those were hot. He started at T-Mobile and became #1 in his first month and earned $17,000 in his first month. (2006-2007) Zagg—inventor of the invisible shield for your devices—came out and he would refer people to them like crazy. Jesse thought he could do a better job so he and a co-worker started testing about 500 different products that they thought would work to compete with Zagg. They made a trip from Utah to Arizona since it was the top T-Mobile market and Zagg had no presence in the malls there. Signed a lease in the mall there and started selling "Ghost Armor." Sold $75 the first day. (Three sales.) They wore ties like that did at T-Mobile then decided to go in with flip flops, t-shirts, and shorts and made about $150. The first Saturday they sold $850 on 250 locations, 1,000+ employees, etc Lots of speed bumps. Three months into their venture their manufacturer just quit. Three months after that their new manufacturer launched a competitive brand so they took steps to protect themselves and control the manufacturing process. 5 stores in 2008. 2012 they did $70 million. Retail branding in the malls helped them expand. They offered great customer service. The experience and culture made the difference. Sold off the corporate locations and just kept Arizona. Sold it all in 2014. His partner got into a bad addiction and three years into their growth he committed suicide. *What sales method do you follow?* Empathy is key. Listening is key. Ask great questions.
