Hey team! In today's episode, I'm chatting with Valerie McIntyre, a Licensed Professional Counselor, an ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider, and the author of A Journey to a Valiant Mind, a book that dives into navigating ADHD with resilience and self-compassion. In our conversation, we dive into how ADHD isn't just about task management, but how, more often than not, it's also about emotional regulation. Valerie talks about the complex emotions that come with ADHD, especially for late-diagnosed individuals, and how those feelings often get tangled up with shame and self-judgment. We also touch on how perfectionism, rejection sensitivity, and even seemingly small tasks can build up into emotional barriers. Valerie's approach emphasizes compassion, and this episode is filled with tools to help you break free from self-doubt and cultivate a more positive, empowered relationship with your ADHD. If you'd life to follow along on the show notes page you can find that at https://HackingYourADHD.com/231 https://tinyurl.com/y835cnrk - YouTube https://www.patreon.com/HackingYourADHD - Patreon This Episode's Top Tips 1. It's important to recognize that emotional struggles are often rooted in our internalized beliefs about our ADHD symptoms. These beliefs shape how we perceive ourselves and what we're able to accomplish, and our emotional responses. 2. Often, there can be a struggle when shifting from one task to another. If we can acknowledge that there may be a delay in how your brain transitions between tasks and give ourselves time to adapt, we can make those transitions easier. 3. We can use reflective exercises, like journaling or discussion questions, to gain insight into our emotional triggers. This can help us identify better coping mechanisms that actually address the underlying issues we're trying to overcome.

In this episode of PivotMe, April dives deep into the age-old productivity wisdom: “Eat the frog first.” But this isn't just about task lists—it's about courage, action, and momentum. April breaks down why high performers don't avoid hard things; they just do them faster. With raw stories, practical insights, and a splash of humor, this episode will challenge listeners to stop delaying and start leaping. Key Takeaways: What the Frog Really Is: It's that hard conversation, overdue decision, or the lingering task you keep pushing off. And it's costing you peace and progress. The Myth of Graduation: You don't outgrow difficult tasks. Successful people just build the muscle to handle them faster and messier. 10 Seconds of Courage: You don't need hours of motivation—just ten seconds of brave action to shift everything. Momentum Matters: Eating one frog builds energy to tackle the next. Success is a domino effect—just start. Don't Over-Prepare: High performers don't “perfectly plan” their attack on the frog—they just move. They wreck it. They move on. Quote from the Episode: “Frogs don't disappear when you get more successful. They just get bigger—and you get better at eating them.” Actionable Items: Identify the “frog” you've been avoiding—name it. Set a timer and give yourself 10 seconds of bravery to leap. Don't wait for permission, motivation, or perfection—just move. Use the momentum from one win to build into the next. Hard things don't go away. But you don't need less frogs—you need more courage. Eat the frog, eat it fast, and watch how your confidence and success compound. --------- Want to be part of a transformative experience for entrepreneurs and leaders?

Mark Twain famously said, "Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day." In this episode, April Garcia dives into why tackling your hardest task first is the ultimate productivity hack—and how to stop letting procrastination drain your mental energy. Key Takeaways: ✅ The Frog Theory – Your "frog" is the task you dread most. Avoiding it costs more energy than doing it. ✅ Fear vs. Reality – Most frogs take less than 20 minutes to complete (but feel massive in your mind). ✅ Frogs Multiply – Ignored tasks breed mental clutter and distraction. High performers eat theirs fast. ✅ The 20-Minute Rule – If it feels overwhelming, start with just 20 minutes. Momentum kills resistance. Action Steps:

In this episode of Building Better Habits, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche delve into an essential skill for productivity—improving focus. Drawing from personal experiences and practical methodologies, they explore ways to enhance your attention span and align your efforts with meaningful outcomes. Here's a recap of their discussion, peppered with insights to help you sharpen your focus and stay on track. The Challenge of Staying Focused The episode opens with an acknowledgment of the common struggle many face—distractions. From holiday chaos to unexpected snow days, Rob and Michael discuss how life's interruptions can derail even the best-laid plans. The key, they emphasize, lies in understanding the why behind your tasks and maintaining clarity about your goals. They draw a distinction between being busy and being productive, urging listeners to focus on what truly matters. Rob highlights how distractions, such as digital notifications or seemingly minor tasks, often lead to wasted time. By contrast, deliberate planning and mindful action can help you avoid these pitfalls. Techniques to Improve Focus 1. The Pomodoro Technique Rob praises the Pomodoro Technique, a time-management strategy that involves breaking work into focused intervals (typically 25 minutes), followed by short breaks. He suggests starting small by committing to just one or two Pomodoros a day and building from there. This approach helps sustain concentration and prevents burnout. 2. Prioritize Your “Why” Both hosts stress the importance of understanding the purpose behind each task. Before diving into work, ask yourself: What is the goal of this task? How does it contribute to the bigger picture? What does “done” look like for this item? This reflective practice can help you stay focused on tasks that provide real value rather than getting sidetracked by unnecessary details. 3. Avoid Rabbit Holes Rob and Michael caution against spending excessive time on minor, non-essential details. For instance, tweaking the color of a button or perfecting a report with excessive detail can eat away at time without adding meaningful value. Instead, focus on functional outcomes that directly address the needs of your project or customer. Balancing Focus with Functionality and Aesthetics One of the most relatable moments comes when Rob shares his analogy of creating a forest path. He explains that when cutting a path through dense woods, the goal is to clear a functional route—not to make it beautiful right away. Similarly, in software development and other projects, focus first on achieving functionality. Aesthetic enhancements can come later once the foundational work is complete. The Value of Timely Execution Timeliness is a recurring theme in this discussion. The hosts emphasize delivering work just in time—when it's needed. Agile and Scrum methodologies align well with this principle, encouraging developers to prioritize high-value features and tackle them incrementally. By focusing on timely execution, you can avoid overengineering early stages and adapt as requirements evolve. Key Takeaways 1. Build Habits Around Focus Developing habits like regular breaks, structured time management, and prioritization can significantly enhance your focus. Rob suggests starting your day by creating a thoughtful to-do list. Before beginning a task, identify the quickest, most efficient path to completion. 2. Stay Productive, Not Just Busy Michael adds that being productive means focusing on meaningful work rather than trying to appear busy. Clear communication, especially in status reports, ensures that your contributions are visible without unnecessary fluff. 3. Define Completion Understanding what “done” means for each task helps you stay aligned with your goals. Whether you're developing software, writing reports, or managing a team, knowing the endpoint keeps you on track. Focus Challenge of the Week The hosts leave listeners with a practical challenge: Create a daily to-do list. Reflect on the “why” behind each item. Regularly assess whether your efforts align with your goals. By incorporating these habits, you can sharpen your focus, improve productivity, and avoid wasting time on distractions. Improving focus is a skill that requires intention, practice, and self-awareness. Whether you're tackling a software project or managing daily responsibilities, Rob and Michael's strategies provide a solid foundation to enhance your productivity. As they remind us, the key is not to work harder but to work smarter—one habit at a time. Xmas Special: Running Experiments Over Managing A Tasklist, aka The Backlog With Vasco Duarte In the third episode of the “5 Wishes for 2025” series, Vasco Duarte takes aim at one of the most common anti-patterns in software development: the obsession with managing tasks instead of discovering what truly works. He calls on teams to shift their mindset from backlog management to running experiments, creating a culture of learning and rapid innovation. From Backlog Secretary to Product Scientist “Managing a backlog is like planning a road trip by focusing on the gas stops instead of the destination.” Vasco reflects on how teams often lose sight of their goals, becoming bogged down in task management instead of pursuing real customer value. He humorously compares this approach to being a “backlog secretary,” organizing tasks while forgetting why the project began in the first place. His solution? A radical shift from task obsession to a learning-first approach driven by rapid experiments. The Power of 24-Hour Experiments “Why wait for weeks to learn something you could test in a day?” Vasco shares real-world success stories of teams embracing a rapid experimentation mindset: • The Skeptical Client: In just 48 hours, this team launched two market experiments and gained actionable feedback. • The Experiment-First Startup: Meeting twice weekly to design and run experiments, this startup learns more in a week than most teams do in a month. These examples showcase how rapid testing leads to faster learning and greater customer impact. The Build-Measure-Learn Framework “Or as I like to call it, the ‘Question-Experiment-Insight' cycle – it's like having a GPS for product development.” Vasco introduces a three-step approach to running experiments: 1. Start with a Concrete Goal: Define measurable business targets using a Business Value Equation. 2. Create a Metrics Tree: Break down goals into daily metrics that track progress. 3. Experiment, Experiment, Experiment: Test new features, tweaks, and ideas quickly to gain insights and adjust course. He highlights a team's transformation from a “feature factory” to “experiment mode,” where the Product Owner posed questions and the team creatively solved them. This cycle drives meaningful insights instead of aimless task completion. A Wish for 2025: From Features to Insights “A backlog full of tasks is like a restaurant full of recipes – it means nothing until you know what your customers actually want to eat!” Vasco's third wish for 2025 is a world where teams prioritize learning over task management. By embracing the “Question-Experiment-Insight” cycle, teams can focus on solving customer problems and creating real value. This mindset shift transforms teams from task managers into product scientists, driving faster, smarter innovation. See It in Action: Global Agile Summit 2025 “Want to learn how real teams are running experiments and making an impact? Join us in Tallinn!” Vasco invites listeners to the Global Agile Summit 2025 in Tallinn, Estonia, where teams will share stories about adopting rapid experimentation. Holiday listeners can snag a special “White Wednesday” deal: a 75% discount on tickets. Visit GlobalAgileSummit.com to claim your Super Early Bird ticket. About Vasco Duarte Vasco Duarte is a thought leader in the Agile space, co-founder of Agile Finland, and host of the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast, which has over 10 million downloads. Are you avoiding tasks you know you need to do? Whether it's filing taxes or cleaning your garage, sometimes the hardest part is just starting. In this episode of PivotMe, April dives into a powerful productivity hack called body doubling—a game-changer for people with ADHD and anyone struggling with procrastination. Discover how having someone nearby can help you tackle those frogs faster and why admitting you need support is a strength, not a weakness. What You'll Learn in This Episode What are frogs? Frogs are the tasks we need to do but dread tackling—often uncomfortable, tedious, or overwhelming. The power of body doubling: This simple yet effective method involves having someone present while you work. Their presence can make a daunting task feel less overwhelming, especially for ADHD individuals. Insights from real stories: Hear about Bethany and Brittani, two clients with ADHD who used body doubling to overcome procrastination and boost productivity. Why this hack works: For people with ADHD, skills aren't even layers—they're spikes. Body doubling helps stabilize these spikes and makes even the toughest tasks achievable. Common frogs for ADHD individuals: Tasks like taxes, cleaning spaces, or completing administrative work can become manageable with this hack. Memorable Quotes: "Body doubling isn't about someone holding your feet to the fire—it's about emotional support. Like holding your hand while crossing a scary bridge." "Admitting you need help isn't weakness; it's the first step toward action." Actionable Takeaways: Identify a frog you've been avoiding and find a body double to help you tackle it. Understand that perfection isn't required; progress is. Use the “next right step” mindset to avoid feeling overwhelmed by big tasks. In the ever-evolving world of software development, the tools you use can either streamline your workflow or slow you down. Mastering the right developer tools isn't just about efficiency—it's about transforming how you approach challenges and fostering habits that drive smarter, more effective development. The Building Better Developers podcast dives deep into this topic, exploring how thoughtful tool selection and intentional habits can lead to meaningful growth and productivity. Let's explore how developer tools can be a catalyst for transformation in your work. Why Developer Tools Matter The podcast emphasizes that developer tools are not just about improving efficiency—they shape how we think and solve problems. Tools like integrated development environments (IDEs), task management software, and even simple utilities help bridge the gap between idea and execution. Choose tools that enhance, not complicate. When evaluating tools, prioritize simplicity and integration over complexity. As Rob Broadhead explains, “Avoid tools that add work. The app should improve your life, not make it harder.” For instance, while tools like QuickBooks Desktop streamline accounting, their online counterparts may introduce unnecessary complexity. Evaluating Developer Tools: A Framework The podcast introduces a structured approach to evaluating tools. Here's a summarized framework: Define Your Needs: Identify the problems the tool should solve. Is it for task tracking, bug fixing, or customer relationship management? Research: Use online comparisons or customer reviews. Google terms like “alternatives to [tool]” or “tools like [tool name]” to discover your options. Test the Tools: Take advantage of free trials or demos to assess usability and functionality. Measure ROI: Evaluate the time and effort saved versus the cost of the tool. By taking this methodical approach, you avoid the common trap of jumping into tools without a clear purpose. Common Pitfalls with Developer Tools Michael Meloche warns against several pitfalls, including: Over-complicating workflows: Switching between multiple tools can lead to inefficiency. Find one that meets most of your needs and stick with it. Time sinks: Developers often spend hours experimenting with tools that don't provide meaningful value. Set clear time limits for evaluating new software. Redundancy: Avoid using multiple tools for the same task. For example, don't use three bug trackers when one robust option like Jira will suffice. Remember, the goal isn't to try every tool but to find those that integrate seamlessly into your existing processes. Top Developer Tools Mentioned The podcast lists several essential categories of tools every developer should explore: Task Management: Tools like Jira, Asana, and Monday.com streamline task organization and collaboration. Version Control: Git remains the gold standard, with platforms like GitHub and GitLab offering enhanced collaboration features. Time Tracking: Tools like Toggl help track productivity and billable hours effectively. Communication: Slack and Microsoft Teams are ideal for keeping remote teams connected. The Seasonal Approach to Tool Mastery Rob proposes a seasonal approach to tool evaluation. Instead of randomly testing tools throughout the year, dedicate specific periods to exploring certain categories. For example, focus on marketing automation tools one season and customer relationship management tools the next. This method ensures you gain deep knowledge of tools relevant to your work without overwhelming yourself. Tips for Implementing New Tools Start Small: Test one feature at a time. For instance, if trying a new IDE, begin by configuring it for a small project. Involve the Team: Gather input from colleagues to ensure the tool works across the board. Track Impact: Use metrics to evaluate the tool's impact, like reduced project delays or improved code quality. Challenge for Developers The podcast ends with a challenge: spend seven days exploring a new category of tools. Here's how to get started: Day 1: Research tools in a specific category (e.g., bug tracking or time management). Days 2-6: Spend 10-15 minutes each day testing different tools. Day 7: Evaluate your findings and pick the one that fits best. This simple exercise sharpens your evaluation skills and helps you discover tools that genuinely improve your workflow. Final Thoughts Building better habits and mastering tools isn't about chasing every shiny new app. It's about intentional choices that align with your goals. As Rob Broadhead wisely concludes, “It's not about doing more; it's about doing what matters.” Take the time to evaluate your toolset, and you'll find yourself not just working harder but working smarter.
