Greg Mathis was a juvenile delinquent Growing up in rough Detroit neighborhoods Mathis fell in with the wrong crowd and was arrested several times before he was even 17. But when he reached a critical turning point, Mathis was able to turn his life around. He got his GED, went on to get a bachelor's degree, and graduated from law school. And passed the bar. He faced still more obstacles on his way to becoming a popular TV courtroom personality. In fact, only Judge Judy has been on the air longer. In this 2002 interview Mathis reflects on his life, his career, and the role his mother played. Here it is. Handpicked by Greg Hahn himself, the Blue Crowbar award-winning campaign. The Blue Crowbar goes to the single best campaign submitted. Best in Show. We asked the nation of aspiring advertisers to fix the perception of Dasani Water. And this team did that so beautifully. They came up with "Tap Map." People love to call Dasani tap water, and they're right — it is just tap water. But that's a good thing. Because of outdated lead service lines, many people don't have access to clean, quality tap water, and Dasani can change that by embracing who they are. With the help of Tap Maps, more people can be proud of the water coming from their faucets. Congrats to Sam Hamerski, Austin Lozano and Jamie Chihuan. Use your Crowbars wisely, and congrats on this accomplishment; we are proud to be your accomplices as you break into advertising. If you've stayed home sick in the past 20 years, you've probably come across Judge Greg Mathis on your television screen. He's been hosting his eponymous daytime TV court show, Judge Mathis, for more than two decades. The only other television court personality to top that record is Judge Judy. But long before he found himself on the small screen, Mathis was a judge here in his home state of Michigan. Born in Detroit, he was elected to the state's 36th District Court in 1995. After more than two decades the show Judge Mathis is coming to an end, but fans of Mathis will be happy to hear that a new iteration of the show will be coming in fall 2023, after former Detroit resident Byron Allen's Allen Media Group picked up the show. The new show will be called Mathis Court with Judge Mathis. ___ Looking for more conversations from Stateside? Right this way. If you like what you hear on the pod, consider supporting our work.
