The Saturday Steel Band Competition (August 29) requires a ticket; Sunday Children's Day and Monday main parade are free. Arrive early, follow your nose to the food stalls, and keep your wits about you in the crowds. Trent Park House of Secrets — London's brand new museum, opened July 21st — tells the extraordinary story of the WWII intelligence operation where 59 captured German generals were housed in apparent luxury, never knowing the entire house was bugged. Often called "the other Bletchley Park." Tickets are £14 (~$20), open Tuesday–Sunday, and it's on the Piccadilly Line at Oakwood station. Jonathan is going. Buckingham Palace State Rooms are open daily through August 31, 9:30am to 7:30pm — the longest opening hours of the season. Jonathan has booked both the State Rooms tour and the newly opened East Wing tour. If you haven't booked yet, check for remaining availability immediately; the best slots are gone but cancellations do appear. Banqueting House on Whitehall — Inigo Jones's 1622 masterpiece with its Rubens ceiling, the building outside which Charles I was executed — reopens fully on August 1st after a major restoration. Adults £10, under 16s free, open Thursday–Monday. New lift for step-free access. One of London's most underrated experiences. The Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London — the world's oldest unbroken military ceremony, performed every night for at least 700 years — releases the next month's tickets on the first working day of each month. The next release is August 3rd at 1pm. Jonathan got a ticket; it requires an early wake-up and sells out within hours of release. The UK government has instituted a 15% VAT discount on tourist attraction admissions this summer — which means lower prices at major London attractions. If you booked in advance, you may be entitled to a partial refund for the difference; check with each venue. Lower prices also means slightly larger crowds. The Greenwich + Docklands International Festival runs August 21 to September 6 — 17 days of completely free outdoor theatre, circus and dance across Greenwich Park, Woolwich, and the Docklands. The two-day Greenwich Fair on August 22–23 in Greenwich Park is the unmissable centerpiece. No ticket required — just show up. Several major exhibitions close on or around August 23rd — a critical date. Zurbarán at the National Gallery, Fairy Tales at the British Library, David Hockney at the Royal Academy, Hervien Anderson at Tate Britain, and Patrick Caulfield at the Royal Academy all close that day. If you're arriving after August 23rd, these are gone. The BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall run all month and into September — the world's largest classical music festival, with day-of standing tickets potentially available on the door. Jonathan hasn't managed to go yet and still wants to. It's worth trying even if you can't book ahead. August in London is genuinely two cities at once: over a million tourists fill the attractions and the carnival streets, while large swaths of residential London go quiet as locals escape. The wise visitor uses this: the tourist attractions are busy, but the parks, the residential neighborhoods, and the early mornings are surprisingly peaceful. Soundbites "August is London's most contradictory month. Every guidebook tells you it's peak season — and every guidebook is right. And yet at exactly the same time, London kind of empties out. Locals flee to Cornwall, to France, to anywhere that isn't a stuffy office in a heat wave. Whole districts can go completely quiet." — Jonathan on August's strange duality. "The Notting Hill Carnival is that one weekend where London's multicultural and diverse character — which can feel oddly invisible at other times of the year — is front and center. It's loud. It's joyful. And it's entirely free." — Jonathan on why the carnival matters. "They captured high-level German officers and put them all in one place. What the prisoners didn't know was that the entire house was wired with microphones. And hidden in a concealed basement, around a hundred secret listeners — many of them German-speaking Jewish refugees who had fled the Nazis — were recording and transcribing every careless word." — Jonathan on Trent Park House of Secrets. "I have wanted to go inside Buckingham Palace for twenty years. I'm finally doing it this year. I've got my tickets booked. I'm going to do the State Room tour, I'm going to see the freshly rehung picture gallery, and I've booked the East Wing tour. That is going to take a whole Saturday. I cannot wait." — Jonathan on his long-awaited Buckingham Palace visit. "The Ceremony of the Keys is considered the world's longest military ceremony. They say it's been running for a thousand years — I'm skeptical, but at least as long as there's been a Tower of London. I woke up early and managed to snag a ticket before they sold out. Because they do sell out immediately." — Jonathan on booking the Ceremony of the Keys. "Banqueting House. Inigo Jones's masterpiece on Whitehall, with its Rubens ceiling. The one surviving fragment of the old Palace of Whitehall — the very spot where Charles I was executed in 1649. It reopens for the summer on August 1st. That is a lot of history in one place." — Jonathan on Banqueting House reopening. "The government has instituted a fifteen percent discount off the twenty percent VAT for tourists visiting tourist attractions this summer. So this month you will see lower prices at all of London's major tourist attractions. And if you booked in advance, you should be getting a refund." — Jonathan on the summer VAT tourist discount. "I love Star Trek. I have seen every episode of Star Trek dozens of times. You can't see over there, but I'm building the LEGO Enterprise D model right now. "Leadership is probably the ability to influence in a positive way." "There is no the right way or the wrong way; there is the best way." "What I do not accept is people not trying." "Status quo is a no-go." "A good leader would be able to grow not just a company, but also grow the people." Christian Baudat is Country General Manager Japan for The Ascott Limited, one of the world's leading serviced residence and hospitality groups. A graduate of the École hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland, he began his international hotel career with Hilton in Tokyo in 1985. His career has included senior leadership and general management roles in Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and across the wider Middle East and North Africa region. Baudat has led hotel openings, major rebranding projects, operational turnarounds and large-scale teams, including roles at Hilton Tokyo, Hilton Tokyo Bay, Hilton Nagoya, Hilton Tokyo, Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk and Hilton Tokyo Odaiba. Before joining Oakwood and subsequently leading Ascott's Japan operations, he served as a regional vice president for Rotana, overseeing more than twenty properties across several countries. His long career in Japan has given him a practical understanding of how to combine global hospitality standards with Japanese expectations around respect, harmony, communication and customer service. Christian Baudat's leadership journey began with a desire to leave his small Swiss hometown and see the world. After graduating from the École hôtelière de Lausanne, he entered the Hilton management trainee programme and arrived in Tokyo in 1985. His first assignment in Shinjuku placed him immediately inside one of the world's most demanding hospitality markets. Over the following decades, he built an unusually broad career across hotel openings, restaurant operations, rebranding assignments, general management roles and regional leadership responsibilities in Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the Middle East. His leadership philosophy has been shaped by the realities of working across cultures and by the particular communication dynamics of Japan. One of his earliest lessons was that agreement cannot be assumed simply because someone says "yes". In Japanese business, "hai" can mean that a message has been heard, rather than that it has been accepted or that action will follow. Baudat therefore places great importance on validation. For him, leadership requires checking whether people truly understand the intent behind a message, whether they believe in it and whether the message has travelled accurately through the organisation. This is especially important in hierarchical organisations, where messages can become diluted as they pass through middle management. Baudat avoids relying solely on formal reporting lines. He spends time close to the operational frontline, speaks directly with associates, observes service delivery and confirms whether leadership messages remain alive at lower levels of the organisation. This approach is not intended to undermine managers. Rather, it is a way of ensuring that leaders understand what is happening in reality, not merely what appears in reports or formal meetings. Baudat also emphasises that directness must be balanced with humility and respect. Early in his career, he encountered experienced colleagues who regarded a young foreign manager as a possible threat. He learned that authority alone would not create commitment. Respecting experience, acknowledging expertise and demonstrating a willingness to learn were essential. Even when disagreement occurred, he found it important to return to the conversation, restore working relationships and avoid allowing conflict to become permanent. His experience also highlights the changing nature of work in Japan. In the past, employees in hospitality often had fewer career alternatives and might have accepted traditional expectations more readily. Today, employees are more likely to assess whether a role fits their aspirations, lifestyle and values. Talent shortages have also shifted the balance of power. Leaders can no longer assume that staff are easily replaceable. Instead, they need to understand why people are struggling, whether a role suits their strengths and how coaching, support or reassignment may unlock their potential. This creates a new leadership imperative. Rather than dismissing employees who do not immediately fit a conventional model, leaders must be curious. They need to diagnose whether a problem comes from poor instructions, insufficient training, unclear expectations, different personal values or an unsuitable role. Baudat sees this as a central responsibility of contemporary leadership: giving people a genuine chance to improve while maintaining clear standards. Innovation is another key theme in his approach. Baudat encourages people to look beyond their own industry, observe trends in fashion, retail, technology and food, and bring fresh ideas into hospitality. He believes that leaders must create an environment in which experimentation is protected. In Japan, uncertainty avoidance can make people reluctant to suggest ideas that might fail. Effective leaders must provide air cover, take responsibility for sensible experiments and ensure that people receive credit when their ideas succeed. Leadership, in Baudat's view, is not about being the source of every answer. It is about creating the conditions in which people can contribute, learn and grow. Q&A Summary What makes leadership in Japan unique? Leadership in Japan requires a high level of sensitivity to indirect communication, hierarchy and harmony. Baudat's central lesson is that apparent agreement should be checked rather than assumed. A response of "yes" may indicate that someone has heard a message, not that they support it or intend to act on it. Leaders must validate understanding through follow-up conversations, observation and direct contact with the people responsible for execution. The Japanese emphasis on consensus can make nemawashi especially important. Before a major decision is formally announced, informal groundwork often helps leaders understand concerns, identify resistance and build alignment. Formal processes such as ringi-sho may represent the visible decision process, but the real work of consensus-building often happens earlier through respectful discussion and relationship management. Why do global executives struggle? Global executives can struggle when they arrive with strong assumptions, immediate solutions and little patience for local context. Baudat believes that leaders entering Japan should not assume the organisation is broken or that overseas experience automatically provides the correct answer. His preferred approach is a structured ninety-day process: the first month is spent absorbing information, the second month processing what has been learned and the third month communicating direction and beginning execution. The mistake is to act before understanding the people, the history and the operating culture. Leaders need to recognise what existing employees have already achieved and respect the systems that have kept the organisation functioning. Change is sometimes necessary, but change imposed without listening can create resistance, confusion and disengagement. Is Japan truly risk-averse? Japan has a strong preference for reliability, quality and avoiding visible errors. This can make people reluctant to experiment, particularly when mistakes may affect reputation or create embarrassment. However, Baudat does not believe that this means Japanese organisations cannot innovate. The issue is not an absence of ideas. It is the need for leaders to create psychological safety around testing, learning and adjusting. He makes a clear distinction between failure and not trying. Experiments may not always succeed, but standing still is not acceptable. Leaders must demonstrate that responsible attempts will be supported. When an innovation does not work, the response should be to examine the learning, refine the idea or move on, rather than punish the person who took the initiative. What leadership style actually works? Baudat advocates a leadership style built on visibility, respect, personal credibility and practical support. He does not believe leaders should remain in an office and manage only through reports. He prefers to walk the operation, speak with people, recognise good work and identify issues quickly. When serious matters arise, he handles them privately and respectfully rather than publicly embarrassing someone. His style also includes being mindful of personal presence. A senior leader's authority, physical presence, tone of voice and communication style can all be intimidating. Baudat has learned to reduce unnecessary barriers by sitting with people rather than speaking down to them, moving away from a formal desk setting and creating a calmer environment for important conversations. How can technology help? Technology can strengthen decision intelligence by helping leaders see patterns, identify operational issues and make better-informed choices. Data, AI tools and digital twins may enable hospitality organisations to test service flows, anticipate demand, model staffing needs and evaluate guest preferences. However, Baudat's experience suggests that technology cannot replace human judgement, frontline observation or emotional intelligence. Hospitality remains a people business. Technology may improve speed, consistency and insight, but leaders still need to understand staff, guests and the human realities behind operational data. The strongest use of technology is therefore to support better conversations and better decisions, not to remove leaders from the people they lead. Does language proficiency matter? Japanese language ability is valuable, particularly for leaders who intend to remain in Japan for the long term. It signals commitment, reduces communication distance and helps leaders pick up nuance. Baudat learned Japanese out of necessity when he was responsible for large teams with limited English ability. He acknowledges that language skills need not be perfect to be useful. The important point is whether the message can be understood. At the same time, language proficiency is not the first requirement for success. A leader without strong Japanese can still listen carefully, observe body language, work with trusted interpreters and remain alert to tone, silence and context. The most important ability is not speaking every word perfectly. It is understanding what is really being communicated. What is the ultimate leadership lesson? For Baudat, leadership is the ability to influence people and the environment in a positive way. It requires trust, growth and humanity. A good leader grows the company, but also grows the people within it. High intelligence alone is not enough. Leaders with low emotional intelligence may achieve results temporarily, but they risk becoming isolated and losing the confidence of the people around them. The ultimate leadership lesson is that influence is earned. It is earned through listening, keeping promises, supporting people when they face obstacles, recognising their contribution and having the courage to make difficult decisions when necessary. The Marshals pay these inmates $1 a day and are responsible for their work ethics while awaiting transfer to a BOP. Joe Corley Detention Center phone number: (936) 521-4000 US Marshals Office Southern District of Texas phone number: (713) 718-4800 2) Request that these individuals review surveillance cameras in the RHU cellblock where the incident involving a mentally ill prisoner name Brandon that live in cell 243 took place on the morning of 6-25-26 while he was forced to go to rec. This is to verify that he just purchased nearly $100 worth of commissary, a T-shirt- batteries, boxers, etc yesterday. 3) Demand that all of his items be returned to him. 4) Disciplinary for the officers involved in allowing the inmate worker to enter Brandon's cell wholly unsupervised, take his items and refuse to investigate his valid complaint because he's mentally ill and can't comprehend what happened. Background On the morning of June 25 2026 officer Henley and a male white or Hispanic looking officer approached Brandon's cell (243). They told him he was going to rec whether he liked it or not. Brandon complied with their order and was handcuffed and taken to the rec cage outside. I note Brandon wasn't wearing a commissary T-shirt, nor was he carrying anything when he left the cell. Moments later a Black inmate worker with a yellow skin tone entered the cellblock with a cart used to carry cleaning materials. They say he is amongst the most despised for his interest in stealing from other inmates. This inmate worker was ordered to clean Brandon's cell. Not only did he clean the cell, he cleaned him out. As both guards left him to his own device, taking their eyes off of him to tend to less important things. The inmate worker took a large plastic bag full of Brandon's commissary that he'd just bought yesterday, two bags of coffee and a few things laying around and tossed them in the cart's trash compartment like it was trash. Soon after Brandon was placed back into an empty cell and to his dissatisfaction, he protested that Henley had set him up to be robbed. Henley blew his concern off to a female mailroom employee as a hallucination, but what happened was reality. Around 10:20am the inmate worker returned to sweep and mop the cellblock wearing, what looked like, Brandons brand new T-shirt under his own jail issued prison garb. The officer who helped Henley take Brandon to rec halfheartedly asked the inmate worker if he stole Brandon's commissary, implying he wasn't present while the worker was in Brandon's cell. Of course the worker denied taking anything, merely suggesting that the only thing in the cell was trash on the floor. Though he did admit to the officer to taking Brandon's shampoo to use as he wanted. And his other inmate co worker gritted at Brandon that that's what gets done to psych patients. From what transpired both officers not only knew what happened but they created the incident as they already dislike Brandon because of his mental illness, forced him to leave his cell so that an inmate that openly despised him could clean it up unsupervised and stock piled with goodies. If such acts against the mentally ill are perceived as heroic deeds in the eyes of this inmate worker and guards who condone it. A Herne Bay woman has spoken of the moment she was left covered in black paint just minutes before walking down the aisle to get married. Gemma Monk's £1,300 dress was ruined as she prepared to tie the knot at Oakwood House in Maidstone. She'd been targeted by her 49-year-old sister-in-law who'd turned up unannounced to the ceremony and has now been sentenced after appearing in court. Also in today's podcast, students are being encouraged to come forward for a second dose of vaccine, following a deadly outbreak of Meningitis in Kent. Two young people died and 34 were hospitalised after cases spread last month. A day of action's being held in Kent this weekend by campaigners fighting plans for three new solar farms. Hands Off Our Marsh say it would be devastating to see panels installed on hundreds of acres of prime farmland across Romney Marsh. A huge parade will be making its way through Gravesend this weekend as part of Vaisakhi celebrations. The festival marks the solar new year and the founding of the initiated Sikh community in 1699. Thousands of people are expected to take part and it'll leave the Gurdwara just after 11am on Saturday. And in sport, Gillingham's assistant manager is going to be stepping out of the dugout as he takes on a new role at the club. Richard Dobson has been appointed the club's technical director. Hey it's Ron; earlier in the week I'd highlighted some sound legislative offerings from Republican women in the Georgia general assembly that I hoped Democrats would join in on and push across the finish line. There's another, giving pharmacists the ability to prescribe HIV prevention medication, again, penned by a Republican. This is encouraging to see. What's discouraging, of course, is that the same Georgia GOP saw fit earlier in the week to "poison-pill" a bill both parties were enthusiastic about - HB 54 - by adding anti-trans language into it. To discuss some of that refreshing (and rare) bipartisanship - but also the more troubling legislation making its way through this session, is Dr. Michelle Au, representative for Georgia's 50th House District, and host of the new podcast "Georgia Diagnosis."Rev. Senator Raphael Warnock added an amendment to DHS funding in an attempt end DHS/ICE purchasing warehouses in Oakwood and Social Circle, GA, two small communities sure to be overwhelmed by facilities their infrastructure cannot handle; the kind of treatment op/ed writer Patricia Murphy called 'unconscionable.' Then I got my mental wellness break with comedian / political satirist Sterling Thrill. Between 'Bad Bunny' triggering Megyn Kelly & Pam Bondi going full "Karen" with her flash cards, we had plenty to chuckle about - and did. Lastly, an op/ed I saw from Mariah Parker & Dominique Grant at Fair Play ATL reminded us all that Atlanta's Olympic legacy isn't just tarnished by a bombing, but a lack of positive impact - and its negative impacts on housing affordability. It's their push to insist that Atlanta hosting eight FIFA World Cup matches in 2026 invests its windfall in positive change and a lack of ICE in the city's streets.

Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to three prior guests of the podcast who are talking to us in the boldest experiment in Rarified Heir Podcast history! How so? We are talking to them all at once. Something we had never done before. But don't fret, Carnie Wilson, Jenny Brill and Shawn Kay have been friends for quite a long time and, in fact, they know each other and host Josh Mills from as far back as elementary school. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to returning (or is it returning, returning, oh well, whatever, never mind), guest Eric Bonerz, son of actor/director Peter Bonerz. We had such a good time talking to Eric in our first conversation, we brought him back to discuss more of the wild and the wacky things we connected on the first time around.
