Ben and Carlos wrap up their final series of organization overviews following the 2024 season with the American League West. The two open the show with a conversation about the process behind Baseball America's annual Prospect Handbook—which you can purchase here as a last-minute Christmas gift for yourself or a loved one!—and then get into the organization rundowns. The two fawn over Seattle's crop of young, up-the-middle hitting talent in one of the deepest and strongest systems they've covered yet, then get into an interesting discussion about who's No. 2 in the system: the Rangers or the A's? After some prospect gushing about Nick Kurtz, Kumar Rocker and Sebastian Walcott, things take a turn for the worse in regards to the Angels and Astros, who seem to be battling it out for the dubious honor of No. 30 org ranking.—Time Stamps(0:30) Prospect Handbook process(7:00) AL West overview(8:30) Mariners(33:00) A's(47:00) Rangers(1:08:00) Angels(1:18:00) AstrosDo you have a question you want us to answer? Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show with Ross to discuss the Astros securing their fourth consecutive American League West title with Tuesday's 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners. The Astros are now locked into the AL's No. 3 seed in the Wild Card Series. The final regular-season home game Wednesday afternoon saw Alex Bregman start at third base. However, in the fourth inning, manager Joe Espada removed Bregman from the game to receive an ovation from the fans at Minute Maid Park in what could be his final regular-season home game with the Astros. "I thought it was a nice moment," McTaggart said. "This could be it... It will be weird next year if [Bregman] won't be here." The Astros selected Bregman with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 MLB draft, with Bregman making his debut a year later. As a two-time All-Star who helped the Astros earn their first two World Series championships, Bregman has "taken on a huge leadership role." Bregman is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and while general manager Dana Brown has said he will engage agent Scott Boras with talks of an extension, "it's hard to imagine [Bregman's] going to stay with the Astros," especially with the organization's history of not retaining homegrown players, such as Carlos Correa and George Springer. The Astros final series of the regular season starts Friday in Cleveland, and Yordan Alvarez will not be with the team. Alvarez is recovering from a sprained right knee, and even if he returns in time for the Wild Card Series, he will most likely not play left field for perhaps the entire playoff run. "They do have a whole week to rest him." The best-of-three AL Wild Card Series begins Tuesday at Minute Maid Park, and McTaggart expects Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown and Yusei Kikuchi to lead the postseason rotation in that order. "That's a pretty tough 1-2-3."

Here's the skinny: The Seattle Mariners took the final two games in Oakland to move to 71-70 on the year. They are now just 4.5 games back in the American League West and are trying to give us all a sliver of hope.We spent a good portion of this episode talking about why Jerry Dipoto shouldn't be back in 2025, and then the Mariners apparently decided to bring him back. We're releasing the episode anyways, because it was awesome. We had on Adnan Virk of the MLB Network and Tom Caron of NESN, who have unique perspectives on what the Mariners are going through. We also react to Ryan Divish's appearance on the Jason Puckett podcast.
The Houston Astros have had a rollercoaster of a season, which in the month of May saw them 12 games under .500 and 8.5 games out of first place in the American League West. A lot has changed for the Stros since then.Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman take a look at what's gone right for the Astros that's led them to a six-game lead in the division, why there might be some question marks for who's left out of their postseason rotation and how a consistent season from Jordan Alvarez has held Houston's offense together. Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys talk about the Philadelphia Phillies taking three of four games from the Atlanta Braves over the weekend and why it's becoming one of the best rivalries in baseball.
