Calista Springer was a 16-year-old girl from Centreville, Michigan, who loved to draw, paint, and color — and who spent most of her short life being abused, starved, and chained to a bed by the people who were supposed to protect her. For over a decade, teachers, neighbors, and social workers filed at least 15 reports with Child Protective Services. Nothing was done. On February 27, 2008, a fire broke out in the Springer home. Calista could not escape. She was chained to her bunk bed by a dog choke chain. She died of carbon monoxide poisoning. She was 91 pounds.The Calista Springer case is one of the most heartbreaking examples of child abuse and CPS failure in Michigan history. Calista's stepmother, Marsha and father, Anthony Springer, were ultimately convicted of torture and first-degree child abuse — but only after years of documented abuse that investigators, caseworkers, and school officials failed to stop. The Springers had even pulled Calista out of public school under Michigan's permissive homeschool laws, removing her from the last adults who could have intervened. In 2010, both Marsha and Anthony were sentenced to up to 50 years in prison for torture.In this episode of Weird True Crime, Amber and Gina walk through the full story of Calista Springer — from her early childhood and diagnosis with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, to the years of reported child abuse that CPS ignored, to the fire that killed her and the criminal trial that followed. They also examine the civil lawsuit against the CPS workers who closed Calista's case, the role Michigan's homeschool laws played in hiding her abuse, and what her case changed — and didn't change — about how the state protects vulnerable children.If this episode moved you, please share it. This episode profiles the double shooting murder of Officers 24-year-old Michael Scott Nickerson and 28-year-old Jason Charles Schwenz, who were shot and killed by 43-year-old Francis Mario Zito (Frank), on February 13, 2001, at his trailer in Centreville on the Eastern Shore. This episode also profiles the unsolved shooting murder of 40-year-old Calvin Chiman Young, who was shot on Telegraph Road and Route 100 in Severn, on August 6, 2010, while sitting in his vehicle, stopped at a red light.

The unspoken but implied understanding was that men are like heaven or the sky and women the earth or the ground. This principle persisted, neither challenged or questioned. Growing up in this cultural framework of gender, I learned self-reliance and self-sufficiency were necessary survival skills. Reading a room and responding only after I had observed thoroughly was a must, lest my longing to be chosen were exposed. My adaptability was reinforced by adults saying things to me like, “We don't have to worry about you; you'll figure it out.” Over the years, I've had opportunities to reflect on my story and invite trusted, wise, and curious listeners to speak truth and kindness into formidable moments including those that left an ill impression. Since pre-Covid times, the United Methodist Church has been embroiled in conflict and disagreement over human sexuality, resulting in the splits and splintering playing out over the last several months. DC School Bus Driver Charged with DUI After Injuring 9 Students A bus driver in Washington, D.C. was jailed for DUI after an accident that injured nine children. Troy Reynolds, 48, of Maryland was transporting 44 students and four adults back to Murch Elementary School from Cox Farms in Centreville, Va. when he went off the road and into a ditch, police said. After hitting a boulder, the bus's back tire flattened and rim bent. Reynolds kept driving until adults on the bus encouraged him to halt, authorities said. Nine youngsters were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Sully District Station and Fairfax County Fire & Rescue.
