This week's guest on Heart of Poker is one of the biggest and warmest personalities in the extended world of poker. Kristy Arnett is a poker player and former poker journalist, but she is still very much in the world of media and content creation. As she mentions in the episode, Heart of Poker is right up Kristy's street. Over her career presenting poker coverage for PokerNews and others, she developed a well deserved reputation for creating original and interesting content, the kind of stuff that goes one step beyond the usual sanitized media perspective of poker players that we're all used to - which reads a little like a mission statement for Heart of Poker. Like many people, Kristy's life was turned upside down by the pandemic. With no live poker, no immediate way to make money and (not long later) a baby on the way, Kristy takes us through how she and her husband (poker pro Andrew Moreno) hustled to adapt and keep things going during the chaos of COVID. One of Kristy's most impressive attributes is her honesty and directness. Kara's questions are designed especially to tease out personal and intimate parts of people's lives, and Kristy is ready to confront them unflinchingly. She talks about how she and her husband wrestled back their marriage from the brink of divorce, her struggles to get pregnant, her first big win in Vegas and more. Don't forget to also check out all the earlier episodes of Heart of Poker too, including editions with Ali Nejad, Phil Galfond, Mori Eskandani, Jason Koon, Dominik Nitsche, Vanessa Selbst, Maria Ho, and more.
On the latest special episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Sarah Herring, Jeff Platt, and Chad Holloway talk about some poker players who are expecting babies, Simon Mattsson winning the WPT Online Series High Roller, and recap winners from MISCOOP, NJSCOOP, WSOPC Caesars Atlantic City Online Series. They also break down the Chad Power burglary saga and remember poker legend Tommy Hufnagle, who recently passed away. As for this week's guest, Sarah sits down with Sasha Liu, AKA "Poker Sasha," who talks about her start in poker, working in the casino industry, becoming a pot-limit Omaha player, signing on as a GGPoker Ambassador, and what her life is like now living in Germany. Today, I am going to talk about a moment that I have been avoiding talking about, but I think it is time. After recording the episode with Suki Sohn where she became so vulnerable and overcame a heartbreak that took her to rock bottom, inspired me to share my story. Regular listeners know about my life experience with my husband and our healing from infidelity. Things are so great now, and I am so grateful for what we have been through. It’s time for me to talk about healing and the tangible parts of moving forward during that time, and what I learned moving through it. If you are experiencing heartbreak currently, I want this podcast to be a place that you can lean on and come back to when you need help. I have been procrastinating the sharing of this part of my life, but you guys are my tribe and I want to share with you and inspire you. I hope my truth makes an impact. Show Notes [05:15] Almost four years ago, I found out my husband had a short affair for a couple of weeks. We had been married about 3 years at the time. [05:53] I knew things weren't great, and that we had been fighting and that he felt depressed and disconnected. We weren't really on the same page. I never thought it would lead to possible divorce. [07:23] I was devastated when I found out. Heartbreak can be shocking. When it sets in the grief, sadness, and stress can be overwhelming. [08:05] Fortunately, I had a session scheduled with relationship coach Aaron Steinberg. I already knew I needed to speak with someone and had already had the call scheduled. [08:54] The whole conversation was a blur except for the end of the call. No matter what make sure that you take care of yourself. Aaron ended the call with these simple words. I knew this came from a place of caring and love. [10:08] First and foremost, take care of yourself. Whatever that means to you. [10:40] For me, taking care of myself was eating. I was just so stressed that eating didn't feel like an option. So, I got a green juice. I also needed to try to sleep. [12:27] Every time I had a terrible feeling I would hear the voice say take care of yourself. I was also reluctant to lean on anyone, but this is the time it is important to give yourself permission to ask for help. [13:36] Sarah had snacks and wine waiting for me. I couldn't ask for a better person to be with me at that time. I also drank a lot of wine. [14:32] How it is tempting to drink during these rough times, but it is important to keep in mind that alcohol is a depressant and it can exacerbate the depression. [16:03] A part of me saw the beauty of leaning on a friend. [17:05] Sarah also did my makeup and wanted to make me feel beautiful. [18:05] I had rage, stress, anxiety, and neediness. Sarah was wise enough to tell me that going out that night was a bad idea. [20:00] Even when you are going through the worst of it, ask yourself what you really want. Let that want guide you when you are weak. [22:02] I knew I could fight for my marriage coming from a clean place. Part of healing was sleeping in the den on a spare mattress. [24:27] I was lying there and saw light shining on a photo of Andrew and me laughing. What am I doing on the floor in the den? I realized we were both trying together. [26:22] I latched onto the ribbon of beauty and allowed it to expand and heal parts of me. [27:38] Find the beauty and let it carry you during the darkest time, and let it expand when you can. [28:52] Take care of yourself, make decisions based on what you really want, and find the beauty. [29:53] I wake up everyday grateful that both of us went through this heartbreak. Welcome to this of The Sex, Money and Food podcast! Do you see a connection between emotional IQ and playing poker professionally? There is a link and our guest has found it. Kristy Arnett is an emotional intelligence (EQ) coach and a professional poker player. Today she joins us to talk about that link, how she utilizes her ability to read others and their ability to read her and how she coaches people on taking calculated risks in their lives to achieve the dreams they desire most. Listen in for that and more on episode 105 of Sex, Money and Food. More About This Show Kristy Arnett got into poker back in 2003, about the same time so many others did either playing at home or playing online. She’s always been competitive so when the guys on her college soccer team started playing she joined them, which is also how she met her husband. In her senior year of college they moved to Vegas and she began reporting on soccer and then playing professionally. Today she plays professionally while also being an EQ coach, a writer and a podcaster. On this episode she discloses her ninja trick: she knows while she's reading other poker players they are reading her! Her talent is a combination of reading people, being aware of how people perceive her along playing for more than a decade and working hard at the game. She also remains a student and is always learning and staying ahead of the curve. One of the biggest lessons she learned wasn’t at the poker table however, it was in her marriage. When they met he was 22, and she was 19. They’ve now been together for 12 years, and have grown up together. They’ve also changed a lot in that time. But there came a moment when it wasn’t working, for either of them. She says we all have moments in our lives when we get feedback and she got feedback that her husband wasn't happy in their marriage. She admits she was blind to a lot of things and ignored a lot of things. When she found out he had had an affair she knew it was a chance for her to look around at what she had created, and assess what she really wanted out of her life and her marriage. She had to figure out how to be the person she wanted and needed to be to crawl out of that devastating situation. The first thing that moved her healing along was when she asked herself how can I take responsibility here? While that may seem counterintuitive and perhaps even controversial, it was the question that opened up an opportunity for both of them to heal. She knew she could blame him for all of it and take all the victimhood and the attention that goes along with it, but she knew the way to freedom in any situation is to ask how can I take responsibility for what has happened, even if it’s just a little bit of responsibility? When she did that it started her road to healing and freedom; she could see clearly how she had contributed. For a long time he suffered from depression and she was so removed from vulnerability or softness that she didn't know how to be there for him. She grew up with a “tiger mom” who didn't give hugs and didn't talk about feelings. So when her husband repeatedly told her he felt like she never listened to him she would be defensive and push him away and make him feel wrong. As soon as she understood her part and took responsibility, they were able to have an open dialogue and talk about their future together. Doing so allowed them both to forgive themselves and each other, to start the healing process. Today she's grateful for taking responsibility in that experience because it's helped them to change the course of their marriage and their lives together. It brought everything up in a way so that they had nothing to lose. They were able to get everything out in the open. Their relationship is in an even better place now and she's a better person for having been through that. On this episode she explains why there is so much possibility and opportunity in any devastating moment, why we must always remember our partner is choosing us and we are choosing them, even in a marriage. We lighten up the discussion by also talking about playing professional poker and how it's like the stock market; Kristy explains how she knows what she's earning and the work she does to prepare for playing. And she describes the audio guide meant to be a tool to use when you're stuck, and how you can get it for free. Watch, listen and learn on today’s Sex, Money and Food episode with Kristy Arnett! Tweetable: “In any devastating moment there is possibility.” - Kristy Arnett Kristy Answers The Questions Q: Rank the following in order: Sex, Money, Food? A: I knew you’d ask that and I knew it’d be an in-the-moment answer. It’s sex, food then money. The reason sex is on the table right now is my husband and I are trying to make a baby, and it’s that time if you know what I mean! Q: There is nothing better in life than… A: Love! Everything that is worth having, everything that is worth working for is an extension of ourselves looking to be loved and looking to love people. Q: What does “reading people” smell like to you? A: Oh! That’s a really great question because there’s something so succulent about being able to read someone and to know what they are saying without them saying it. I guess if you’re asking for an actual smell one of the most succulent smells is a sizzling steak. Sex is your life force energy, it's your creative energy. If you've been listening to this podcast you know what I'm saying! If not, think of it like your pilot light - it keeps you on. Sex allows women to be feminine, to create and it helps us use that energy in all areas of our life. It is that fire that keeps you lit and energized and vibrant. Now food also keeps you lit up and energized. Food is fuel for your body, just as your car needs fuel to run so does your body. Without fuel your car won't go and neither will you! Fortunately today there is a growing movement towards more whole foods like salads, fruits, nuts, chicken, etc. Another thing we need to survive today is money. In our society we pay for things with money and we earn an income based on what we do for our clients and/or the value we provide for our employer. Even if we went back to trade and barter that's still a form money because things have a certain value and we exchange them for other things - just like we do with money. Often we get out of alignment with an area because we don’t have much (if any) education about it. Think about sex for example. Even if we had sex education growing up through school and/or at home, odds are it was not extensive. We were probably taught to not get pregnant, but not much else. No one talked to us about the different types of sex, if we should only sleep with our spouse or significant other, how to integrate into our lives, etc. Similarly, food also doesn't get talked about much. We aren’t taught how to eat, what to eat, what is healthy and what is not. There are stigmas about being overweight, especially for women. And finally comes money. We aren’t given much education on this topic, not directly. But indirectly most of us have a money story from our parents, or primary caregiver who raised us. Often something happened to us when we were growing up that created the money story we have today. We may think we'll always be poor because we grew up poor, money may be scarce in our lives now because it was scarce when we were little. Unless we do something to change that story it will be the story that continues in our lives. These are all explanations that make my point: don't let sex, money and food run your life, instead learn to play with them in your life. Learning to play with each area starts by having a foundation of self-love and having a loving relationship with yourself first and foremost. You can start your self-love journey by carving out time for yourself. Whether it’s going out of your way to get your favorite coffee, or taking a bubble bath or reading that book you’re so excited about, make a date to take care of yourself. On today’s show I talk about my personal journey with self-love and how I began it by giving love to everyone I met throughout my day. Listen in to for that story as well as why you must make yourself a priority before anyone else will. Hear that and more on episode 102 of the Sex, Money and Food podcast! What is emotional intelligence or emotional quotient? Studies show that those who take the time to strengthen their EQ muscle have greater levels of success and feelings of fulfillment throughout their life. But can emotional intelligence really be taught, learned, or are we just born with or without it? My guest today is Kristy Arnett, the host of "WTF Am I Doing With My Life" podcast. Kristy is a speaker, writer, and Founder of Center LLC, a coaching business that empowers people to live vibrant, courageous lives through health, fitness, and emotional intelligence. Kristy is certified in Personal Training through NASM and in Life Coaching through ChoiceCenter Leadership University. "I do 1-on-1 coaching and am currently building a health/fitness program built on the context of EQ for sustained lifestyle I'm a certified personal trainer and emotional intelligence coach. I'm most passionate about discussing the hidden reasons people don't achieve or maintain a healthy lifestyle." In our interview we discuss 3 actionable steps for health from an EQ context: 1) Create a health vision - What's it look and feel like? What's your why? 2) Write down specific goals and make a plan with benchmarks. Find people to hold you accountable. Write down possible obstacles. Write down resources you may need to use. Write down who you have to BE to make this happen. 3) Begin a meditation / visualization practice.
