Sermon TextEcclesiastes 9:9; Song of Solomon 2:15; 1 John 1:8-10; Colossians 3:13Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. Catch the foxes for us, the little foxes that spoil the vineyards, for our vineyards are in blossom. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.1 Timothy 1:15The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.2 Corinthians 7:10For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.James 5:16Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Luke 17:3-4 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, I repent, you must forgive him.
How has colonialism shaped our western psychology? How can we reimagine our post-colonial psychology, before we wipe ourselves out? What is the role of the trickster archetype in the disruption of such a well-established and dominant world view?In this episode we have the tricky topic of trying to re-orientate our post-colonial psychology. So we're going to be looking into the reasons why we might need to do that, following the influence of the west's military-industrial rise to power over the last 250 years, and the post scientific revolution's predominantly reductionist, philosophy of science; we're going to be considering the consequences of such a view of humanity and the natural world; and crucially what elements we might invite back into our psychology, to perhaps set humanity back onto a path of harmony with its own species and its habitat, before it destroys itself. To do this we're going to be exploring the possibility that the dualistic, black and white separation of ideas into binary truth or falsehood; and right or wrong, is a big part of the problem; exploring how the complexity of systems, and the nuance of their relations goes far beyond the simplified duality of human thought; and we'll get into how when seen in that simplified binary way, the debate often degenerates into a mud slinging distraction from the underlying issues that continue to thrive un-checked and often grow worse. Fortunately, our guest today is a master of this topic: professor of psychology, philosopher, writer, post-activist and executive director of the Emergence Network, Bayo Akomolafe. He is the author of the books, “These wilds beyond our fences”, “We will tell our own story”, and many beautiful essays which you can find on his website. The different textual views on Job 13:15The textual difficulties and translation of this verse is the most disputed in the book. 13:15 Though he slay me, yet I will trust in Him- KJVThough He slay me, I will hope in Him- NASBGod might kill me, but I have no other hope- NLT What does the Hebrew text say?In the main Hebrew text, the Codex Leningradensis, there is a negative lo, no before the verb hope. Some Hebrew manuscripts have lu, to Him, instead of no.Does the hen at the beginning of the verse mean behold or does it mean if in this context?Does the final verb mean trust (AV), wait (RV), hesitate (NEB), trembleThe value of the NLT at this point is that it shows Job's desperation. He does not think it will work, it is his only chance. Jewish rabbis throughout the centuries wrestled with the meeting. In the second century A.D. these words were written. Mishnah Sota 5. 5 On that same day Rabbi Yehoshua ben Hyrcanus taught: Job served the Holy One, Blessed be He, only out of love, as it is stated: “Though He will slay me, still I will trust in Him” (Job 13:15). And still, the matter is even, i.e., the verse is ambiguous, as there are two possible interpretations of the verse. Was Job saying: I will await Him, expressing his yearning for God; or should the verse be interpreted as saying I will not await Him. As the word “lo” can mean either “to him” or “not,” it is unclear which meaning is intended here. Which fits the context best? “How one resolves these ambiguities is as much a matter of context as text.”[1] While sometimes in textual questions the text is decisive, the contradictory evidence from the text itself may point to context as the most important way to answer this question. Contextually, which of these readings make more sense? There are writers who each appeal to the context and yet go in opposite directions.13:15 Job will defend his ways to God's face 13:16 If Job were a hypocrite would he put his life in jeopardy this way? This, along with vs. 18, sounds like he expects vindication. Even if this passage is positive, what is Job's hope, is his hope to survive the trial or is his hope to be vindicated even if he does not survive this trial. The overall context of Job 12-14 is less positive. I am afraid some writers begin from the basis that Job has no hope of the afterlife. Then when we encounter a difficult passage they argue therefore that this could not be proof of the afterlife because Job has no belief in it. [1] Newsome, 435.
Read OnlineSo when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, “Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me ‘teacher' and ‘master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” John 13:12–15The celebration of the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday is one of the most spiritually enriching liturgical celebrations of the year. The Mass begins with an empty tabernacle. After the readings and homily, the ritual of the washing of the disciples' feet takes place. The Mass culminates with the celebration of the Eucharist, which is then carried in procession to another altar for adoration by the faithful until midnight, during which time we are invited to spend an hour with our Lord, in communion with Him during His Agony in the Garden. The Gospel for the Mass, from Saint John, presents the beginning of Jesus' Last Supper with His disciples. Jesus performs the act of a servant by washing the disciples' feet. Though this surprises them, especially Peter, Jesus insists, saying, “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me” (John 13:8). Our Lord says the same to us.Often people understand the washing of the feet only superficially. Perhaps that is why Jesus said to the disciples, “Do you realize what I have done for you?...” This begs the question: Do you understand the deep and transforming meaning of this most sacred act? This was not Jesus' way of simply telling us that we should be nice to one another and look for opportunities to do each other kind favors. The meaning is much richer. First, we need to be washed by Jesus. Second, we must participate in Jesus' washing of others. How are you washed by Jesus? By His Cross and Resurrection that destroyed sin and restored eternal life. We need to be washed by His blood, which was shed for us and first administered to His disciples at the Last Supper. Jesus was telling them that they need the cleansing He was giving them: the cleansing of sin. Today, this cleansing takes place first in Baptism and then in Reconciliation. If we wish to share in the Eucharist fruitfully, we must first be cleansed through Baptism. When we sin later in life, this cleansing takes place by confessing our sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which prepares us to receive Him worthily in the Eucharist. When we receive those sacraments, we should hear our Lord say to us, “Do you realize what I have done for you?”After that question, Jesus says, “I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” Of course, we are not Jesus. We cannot forgive sins and give to others His Sacred Body and Blood, right? Remember that Jesus was talking to His Apostles, the first bishops, so, “Yes,” Jesus was commanding them, and all bishops and priests that followed, to perpetuate His ongoing gift through the faithful administration of the Sacraments He instituted.Though that is the central command, our Lord also calls all of us to participate in His self-gift. Though only He could offer us the cleansing and transformation we need—which is perpetuated throughout time in the Sacraments—He also commands each of us to imitate His sacrificial love in charity, the “model” He has given us to follow. Forgiven of our sins and strengthened by the Eucharist, we must turn our attention to others, choosing to do everything necessary to be Christ to them, laying our lives down, selflessly and without hesitation. This command applies not only to those we like, but to everyone, equally and unwaveringly. Note that Jesus even washed Judas' feet, despite knowing Judas would soon betray Him. In doing so, Jesus teaches us that charity extends even to those who wrong us, calling us to love as He loves—without conditions or limits.Reflect today upon Jesus' question to the Twelve: “Do you realize what I have done for you?” Ponder that question today, especially this evening. Do you understand the depth of His Sacrifice? Do you understand the Sacraments that perpetuate that Sacrifice throughout time? Do you understand the demands that your reception of His gift places on you? Be open to all that Jesus offers you and, in turn, give what you have been given to others. My sacrificial Teacher and Lord, You have poured out upon me Your Precious Blood to cleanse me from sin and restore me to life. Though I will never fully fathom this Gift, I pray for Understanding, so that I can comprehend more fully this great mystery. As You transform me, please use me as a gift, poured out for others, in charity and selfless service of divine love. Jesus, I trust in You. Big Idea: God, where are you!?!? Esther 3:7-15I. Nothing is arbitrary for a sovereign God. Esther 3:7-9In the first month, the month of Nisan, in King Ahasuerus's twelfth year, the pur—that is, the lot—was cast before Haman for each day in each month, and it fell on the twelfth month, the month Adar. Then Haman informed King Ahasuerus, “There is one ethnic group, scattered throughout the peoples in every province of your kingdom, keeping themselves separate. Their laws are different from everyone else's and they do not obey the king's laws. It is not in the king's best interest to tolerate them. If the king approves, let an order be drawn up authorizing their destruction, and I will pay 375 tons of silver to the officials for deposit in the royal treasury.”II. God's hidden hand moves the king's hand. Esther 3:10-11The king removed his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews. Then the king told Haman, “The money and people are given to you to do with as you see fit.”III. God's plan might seem confusing… at the time. Esther 3:12-15The royal scribes were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and the order was written exactly as Haman commanded. It was intended for the royal satraps, the governors of each of the provinces, and the officials of each ethnic group and written for each province in its own script and to each ethnic group in its own language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the royal signet ring. Letters were sent by couriers to each of the royal provinces telling the officials to destroy, kill, and annihilate all the Jewish people—young and old, women and children—and plunder their possessions on a single day, the thirteenth day of Adar, the twelfth month. A copy of the text, issued as law throughout every province, was distributed to all the peoples so that they might get ready for that day. The couriers left, spurred on by royal command, and the law was issued in the fortress of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink, while the city of Susa was in confusion.Next Steps: Believe: I trust my future in Jesus's hands for the first time today.Become: I will live by faith even when it's scary this week.Be Sent: I will invite someone to hear the Gospel on Easter.Discussion Questions: How do you reconcile the presence of evil and the belief that God has a good plan for you? Third Sunday in Lent Old Testament: Exodus 17:1-7 1From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2The people quarreled with Moses, and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?" 3But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?" 4So Moses cried out to the Lord, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me." 5The Lord said to Moses, "Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink." Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the Lord, saying, "Is the Lord among us or not?" Psalm: Psalm 95 1 Come, let us sing to the Lord; * let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving * and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. 3 For the Lord is a great God, * and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the caverns of the earth, * and the heights of the hills are his also. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, * and his hands have molded the dry land. 6 Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, * and kneel before the Lord our Maker. 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. * Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice! 8 Harden not your hearts, as your forebears did in the wilderness, * at Meribah, and on that day at Massah, when they tempted me. 9 They put me to the test, * though they had seen my works. 10 Forty years long I detested that generation and said, * "This people are wayward in their hearts; they do not know my ways." 11 So I swore in my wrath, * "They shall not enter into my rest." Epistle: Romans 5:1-11 1Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.9Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. 10For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life.11But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Gospel: John 4:5-42 5So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.7A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." 8(His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) 9The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) 10Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." 11The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?" 13Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." 15The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." 16Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back." 17The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; 18for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!"19The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet. 20Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem." 21Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. 24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." 25The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us."26Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking to you." 27Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, "What do you want?" or, "Why are you speaking with her?" 28Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, 29"Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?" 30They left the city and were on their way to him. 31Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, eat something." 32But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about." 33So the disciples said to one another, "Surely no one has brought him something to eat?" 34Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. 35Do you not say, 'Four months more, then comes the harvest'? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. 36The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.' 38I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor." 39Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I have ever done." 40So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41And many more believed because of his word. 42They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world."

Big Idea: It takes a strong center to stand tall under pressure from every side.Esther 1:10-22I. The Queen takes a stand for purityEsther 1:10-12On the seventh day, when the king was feeling good from the wine, Ahasuerus commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carkas—the seven eunuchs who personally served him—to bring Queen Vashti before him with her royal crown. He wanted to show off her beauty to the people and the officials, because she was very beautiful. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command that was delivered by his eunuchs. The king became furious and his anger burned within him.II. The King's feelings get hurt Esther 1:13-15The king consulted the wise men who understood the times, for it was his normal procedure to confer with experts in law and justice. The most trusted ones were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan. They were the seven officials of Persia and Media who had personal access to the king and occupied the highest positions in the kingdom. The king asked, “According to the law, what should be done with Queen Vashti, since she refused to obey King Ahasuerus's command that was delivered by the eunuchs?”III. The bad advice born out of selfish fear Esther 1:16-18Memucan said in the presence of the king and his officials, “Queen Vashti has wronged not only the king, but all the officials and the peoples who are in every one of King Ahasuerus's provinces. For the queen's action will become public knowledge to all the women and cause them to despise their husbands and say, ‘King Ahasuerus ordered Queen Vashti brought before him, but she did not come.' Before this day is over, the noble women of Persia and Media who hear about the queen's act will say the same thing to all the king's officials, resulting in more contempt and fury.IV. The law takes center stage Esther 1:19-22“If it meets the king's approval, he should personally issue a royal decree. Let it be recorded in the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it cannot be revoked: Vashti is not to enter King Ahasuerus's presence, and her royal position is to be given to another woman who is more worthy than she. The decree the king issues will be heard throughout his vast kingdom, so all women will honor their husbands, from the greatest to the least.” The king and his counselors approved the proposal, and he followed Memucan's advice. He sent letters to all the royal provinces, to each province in its own script and to each ethnic group in its own language, that every man should be master of his own house and speak in the language of his own people.Next Steps: Believe: Today, I surrender to the real King of my soul.Become: Today, I will trust God's hand even when it's scary.Be Sent: I will take a stand against evil this week.Growth Group Questions: What pressure were you under last week? What if your problems aren't crushing you but growing you? In this message, Lead Pastor Jamie Nunnally teaches us how to face suffering as he shares about Jesus's letter to the church in Smyrna.Smyrna had been destroyed in 600 BC and rebuilt by Alexander the Great around 300 BC. When this letter was written, Smyrna was the center of emperor worship in Asia Minor. Christians were seen as suspicious, unpatriotic, and disruptive because they refused to join civic rituals. Persecution wasn't occasional—it was daily life. Believers faced exclusion, job loss, harassment, slander, and even death.Revelation 2:8–9 (NLT)Suffering (thlipsis) means "affliction, tribulation, persecution"—literally, "crushing pressure." Jesus says, "I know your poverty"—extreme poverty in a rich city, caused by persecution. One of Smyrna's main exports was myrrh, a fragrant oil made by crushing the myrrh tree. In the same way, Christians were being crushed by persecution and poverty.Citizens were expected to burn incense before Caesar's image and say, "Caesar is Lord." Jesus also mentions a group claiming to be Jews who were actively persecuting Christians.Revelation 2:10 (NLT)"Ten" symbolizes completeness—their suffering would be limited and measured. Jesus promises a "crown of life": be faithful unto death and receive the reward.Revelation 2:11; 20:14–15The second death—the Lake of Fire—is the final judgment for the devil, demons, and those who reject Jesus. Christians die once and live twice. Unbelievers live once and die twice. What does this mean for us?1. God sees your suffering. We all face "thlipsis"—crushing pressure. Suffering isn't a sign of God's absence but the promise of His nearness.2 Corinthians 4:17–18 reminds us our present troubles are small and temporary, producing eternal glory. If you navigate suffering with God, temporary pain becomes eternal reward.2. Don't measure spiritual success by worldly wealth.Jesus called Smyrna "rich." Heaven measures wealth differently.Luke 12:15—life isn't measured by what you own.1 Timothy 6:18–19—be rich in good works. The world counts possessions; Heaven counts faithfulness.3. Sometimes idolatry isn't a god, but a government.Smyrna's temptation was emperor worship. Christians should be informed and involved, but the political process isn't the world's savior. Make political opinions subject to God's Word.4. Real faith leads to resolute faithfulness.Talent gets applause; faithfulness gets a crown (1 Peter 1:7).Faith that only works when life works isn't real faith. When suffering comes, it may not stop immediately. But God fills you with His love, peace, joy, and presence. What was meant to destroy you loses its power to define you.John 16:33—In this world you will have trials, but take heart; Jesus has overcome the world.Jesus is the solution to your suffering. He is faithful to you. Remain faithful to Him, and you will receive the crown of life. Will you be faithful like the believers in Smyrna?
February 9-15The greatest potential for danger is one that we cannot afford to close our eyes to and miss. That is the growing wickedness around us that is seeping into our lives without announcement or warning flare. It just crawls on clawed feet into the hearts of ourselves and our children, as quietly as that asteroid did that swept close to earth. But wickedness is not a near miss. It is targeted, upon us, and more destructive than we have ever supposed.

Dr. Jerome Corsi delivers a sweeping analysis of cultural upheaval, institutional breakdown, and geopolitical realignment as the United States and the world enter what he describes as a decisive historical moment.Dr. Corsi begins by examining a pivotal U.S. Supreme Court oral argument on sex-based protections in women's sports, highlighting the legal confusion surrounding modern gender ideology and its implications for equal-protection law. He argues that the Court's struggle reflects a broader cultural crisis where biological reality is increasingly denied in favor of subjective ideology. CN 1 15The discussion expands into a broader critique of neo-Marxist ideology, activist media narratives, and the collapse of traditional feminist principles. Dr. Corsi connects these trends to the erosion of family structure, rising social instability, and the loss of objective standards in law, education, and public policy.

Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com Catch this first: …The natural mind is speaking into the Supernatural… this never turns out good. *Rather the natural mind needs to be in line with the supernatural. The Mahotmetan writers suggest that Elizabeth was 89 years old… what does that say in the natural? 1 Cor. 2:13And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. 14 The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15The spiritual man judges all things, but he himself is not subject to anyone's judgment.… What did Zechariah not believe? They would have a baby? It would be a great man of God? He would be filled with the Holy Spirit? In Elizabeths womb?… He had prayed… maybe it was believable to have a son (or not) Maybe he just doubted the greatness of his son's calling? **Don't miss the point - they prayed for a son… God is so good, he gives us more than we pray for? Not just a son - but a son of history! Eph. 3:20,21 20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. We pray, we ask, we think…. And he still goes above what we even ask for! He was struck mute… in the greek the word means deaf and mute. **As a punishment? NOPE - as confirmation that this is real. And to protect him from speaking against God.

Leave me a voicemail message to use in a future podcast episode: https://www.speakpipe.com/timschmoyerComment on the full post here: https://read.timschmoyer.com/p/business-makes-kingdom-men----I used to believe business existed mostly to fund ministry, that the people in the pews wrote checks so the people on staff could do the real Kingdom work.I grew up in a pastor's house. Ministry shaped everything: Sunday mornings, Sunday nights, Wednesday nights, and the hours between. I went to Bible college and seminary fully expecting to spend my life in full-time ministry. Business was necessary, sure, but it was for other people. However, as I read Luke 19 more carefully today, I realize Jesus doesn't tell his servants to plant churches or care for the poor or grow in spiritual disciplines. In the parable of The 10 Minas, Jesus says this:Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, “Engage in business until I come.”… When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. -Luke 19:13, 15The master doesn't hand his servants a theology quiz or a spiritual gifts assessment. He gives them money and says, “Engage in business.”Not prayer. Not Bible study. Not ministry. Business. This Parable Ruins My CategoriesWhen the master returns as king, he asks about ROI (return on investment). The servant who turned one mina into ten gets authority over ten cities. The one who made five gets five cities. The one who buried his mina? He's slaughtered. Not demoted. Not reassigned to a lesser role. Killed. Jesus puts these words in the mouth of the returning king: “As for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.”I want to soften this. I want to explain it away as hyperbole or limit it to the political enemies mentioned earlier in the parable. But the servant who buried his mina is grouped with those who rejected the king's reign entirely. Playing it safe wasn't neutral. It was rebellion.Apparently, Jesus believes something I struggle to accept: fruitfulness isn't optional. Multiply what the Master entrusts to you and receive cities. Bury it? You've declared whose side you're on.To the master, one's fruitfulness in business today seems to determine one's fitness to rule cities in the age to come.I realize this makes most Christian men uncomfortable. Some of us have been trained to see business as secular, something we do to fund ministry or a necessary evil to provide for our family while we wait for the real work of the Kingdom to begin. But Jesus presents business itself as a proving ground for eternal authority.Subscribe to join me and other Christian men in pursuing the noble task of eldership (1 Tim 3:1).Why Business? When I think about my experience in starting, growing, and ultimately selling my business, a few reasons come to mind.* Business forces you to create value where none existed. It requires you to manage resources, assess risk, lead others, and bear the weight of both success and failure. It tests whether you can be faithful with what's entrusted to you when no one is watching and the outcome is uncertain.* Business reveals character like few other pursuits. You can fake spirituality in a prayer meeting. You can coast on charisma in ministry. But business is ruthlessly honest. Did you create value or didn't you? Did people freely exchange their resources for a solution you offered or didn't they? Did you multiply what was given or let it stagnate?* Business joins God in His mission of being fruitful and multiplying, and his subsequent blessing to us to do the same. Any successful business revolves around solving problems for people. The whole endeavor focuses on turning someone's chaos into order, exactly what God did when he took an empty and formless earth and turned it into something orderly and beautiful. The Bigger StoryWhen God created man, his first words to us were not “be holy” or “worship me” or “evangelize.” His first words were, “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.” Not only was it a command, but it was also a blessing. Genesis 1:22 starts the command by saying, “He blessed them…” We were created to work. And it's good (until work is cursed in Genesis 3; it's still a blessing, but now it's toil). This is the original job description for us: Take what God has made and make it more fruitful. Extend order into the chaos. Multiply goodness. Create culture and civilization from raw materials. Take the garden and grow it until cities like it cover the face of the earth. This is what business does at its core. It takes resources, applies our creativity and effort, and produces something more valuable than what existed before. It's subduing the earth. It's multiplying fruitfulness. It's fulfilling the original design for manhood that God stamped into us at creation. The Master's command to engage in business isn't an arbitrary test. It's reconnecting His servants to their primal purpose as image-bearers. It's asking:“Can you do what men were made to do? Can you take what I've given you and make it fruitful?”Training Ground for CitiesIn Luke 19, the servants who succeed in business receive cities to govern. This is the connection I missed while in Bible college and seminary. Business is not an end in itself. The goal isn't only to make money. It's preparation for rule. It's the fulfillment of the Genesis 1 blessing had sin not entered. When I build a business, I was learning to:* Assess people and situations accurately* Make decisions that impact my family' life, my employee's lives, and our customers* Bear responsibility for outcomes that affect others* Multiply resources rather than merely preserve them* Lead people toward productive ends* Create order and value in a small domainThese are precisely the skills required to govern a city. The man who can make one mina into ten has demonstrated he can take a small domain and multiply its fruitfulness. He's ready for a larger domain. The man who buried his mina revealed he's a steward who preserves but never increases. He maintains but never multiplies. He's risk-averse, suspicious of his master, and content to merely survive rather than grow. It appears that this man is not fit to rule anything.Subscribe to join me and other Christian men in pursuing the noble task of eldership (1 Tim 3:1).What This Means for Men TodayIf business is the training ground for Kingdom rule, then our work as a Christian man is not a necessary evil or a distraction from real ministry. It's the arena where we're being tested and trained for eternal authority. The faithfulness we show in building our businesses, managing assets, creating value—this is not separate from our spiritual formation. It is our spiritual formation.Every hard decision we make is teaching us judgment. Every risk we take is training us in faith mixed with wisdom. Every person we lead is preparing us to shepherd a city. Every failure we endure and recover from is forging the resilience we'll need to govern in the age to come. This has implications for how I father my sons. I'm not just teaching them to love Jesus and be nice people. I'm training them to be fruitful, to multiply what's entrusted to them, to take dominion over small things so they'll be ready for greater responsibilities. And every day that my 15 year old son gets excited to see his hard-earned money growing in mutual funds, and the patience he shows when it looses money and he doesn't pull it out, he's learning to have a long-term perspective on ROI.The Master Cares About ROI, so I Should, Too.To the seminary version of myself many years ago, the most unsettling part of this parable is how much the master cares about return on investment. He's not impressed with the man who played it safe. He's furious with him.The master calls him wicked for not even putting the money in the bank to earn interest. He demands fruitfulness, not just faithfulness in the sense of careful preservation. He rewards multiplication, and he punishes stagnation. This reveals something about the heart of God that shapes how I think about my life right now. The Kingdom is not coming to men who merely showed up and didn't make too many mistakes. It's coming to men who took what they were given—gifts, opportunities, resources, time—and took risks to make them more fruitful.God is not honored by when I play it small. He's not glorified by my risk-averse self-protection. He's entrusting me with minas today because he's preparing me for cities tomorrow. The question is whether I'm engaging in business or burying what I've been given.Every hard moment I face in business, in leadership, in leading a family, and multiplying—that's not a distraction from the Kingdom. That's training for cities. And the Master is watching to see what kind of return I'll bring Him when He comes back as King.P.S. In 2013 I was in the startup grind, trying to grow a brand new business with a wife and three small kids depending on me. During that season of life, Timothy Keller's book, “Every Good Endeavor,” completely shifted my understanding of what I was doing. I wasn't just trying to survive financially or even grow a business. I was seeking the Kingdom and joining the Master in His work. I highly recommend this book. This is a public episode. “Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live! Then the Lord God of Heaven's Armies will be your helper, just as you have claimed. Hate evil and love what is good; turn your courts into true halls of justice. Perhaps even yet the Lord God of Heaven's Armies will have mercy on the remnant of his people.” - Amos 5:14-15The book of Amos has a bit of a reputation. It's not known for being the most fun of the minor prophets. It doesn't pop up in many sermons, you don't see many Bible studies focused on it. There are many reasons why this is the case. Amos is a harsh book - he doesn't hold back on what he has to say. In chapter 8 it says, “The Lord said, ‘Like this fruit, Israel is ripe for punishment! I will not delay their punishment again. In that day the singing in the Temple will turn to wailing. Dead bodies will be scattered everywhere. They will be carried out of the city in silence.'” Again . . . not the most fun read. However, the true heart of the book of Amos is an incredibly important message about how you view God. It's a book about justice. It's a book about repentance. It's a book about the true heart of worship. To help us navigate the book of Amos is Dr. Danny Carroll, Scripture Press Ministries Professor of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College. Danny has studied, taught, and written about Amos for decades, including writing some commentaries on the book. Today he'll explain why Amos has captured his attention for so long, why it's such a unique book in the prophets, and how the church, particularly in America, should pay extra attention to its warnings.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Disobedient Generations and Lost Opportunities - Matthew 21:33-465 G Living – Do everything you do…For the Glory of GodFor the Good of your fellow manTo get the Gospel to non-believers For the Growth of your fellow ChristiansWith a Grateful heartToday we are going to see Jesus tell another parable story that rebuked the unrepentant generation that failed to give Jesus the glory due His name.Matthew 21:33-46 They would have instantly recognized the vineyard as a reference to Israel, and the Master of the house as God Himself (Isaiah 5:1-7).God has every right to expect all of us to give Him the glory He deserves, and be both faithful and fruitful stewards of what He Has entrusted to us.In Jesus' story the servants are obviously the prophets that God had sent to His people, many of whom were mistreated by people who didn't want to hear and obey the messages God sent through the prophets.Long ago at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed the Heir of all things, through whom also He created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. - Hebrews 1:1-3Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush (daka-H1792) Him; He has put Him to grief; When His soul makes an offering for guilt, He shall see His offspring; He shall prolong His days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. Out of the anguish of His soul He shall see and be satisfied; by His knowledge shall the Righteous One, My Servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and He shall bear their iniquities. - Isaiah 53:10-11It is so sad that that generation missed Jesus their cornerstone. It is sadder still that for 2,000 years Jews have still been looking for the Messiah who has already come. It will be equally sad if today you despise Jesus and build on another foundation (Acts 4:5-12; 1 Peter 2:4-10)That generation lost the opportunity for national Israel, but the day will come when they Israel will turn to Jesus in mass and be fully restored. In the meantime the gospel goes forth to everyone, Jew and Gentile alike (Acts 1:6-8).For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite (daka-H1792) and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite (daka-H1792). - Isa. 57:15The religious leaders were supposed to bring God glory through their work in Israel. We are to bring God glory through our work in the church and in the world's “seven mountains of cultural influence” – family, church, government, education, media, arts/entertainment, and business.Jesus has delegated to us His power of attorney to represent Him while He is gone! How do you know you are doing it well? If you are doing what Jesus would do it if He was here, you are being faithful and fruitful!

The Purpose of Marriage - Matthew 19:1-15The practice of the father of the bride ‘giving away' the bride goes all the way back to the first 2 chapters of the Bible, Genesis 1-2. We will see Jesus talk about it in today's passage!Where is one of the biggest places we get to practice giving and receiving forgiveness? Within our marriages! As we look at Jesus' response to the Pharisees, we are going to see Jesus model for us how to respond to all the “What about this issue,” or “what about that issue” questions that people ask us to weigh in on.Jesus teaches on the purpose of marriage - V. 4-6I love Jesus' question, “Have you not read?” He's saying, “Let's go back to the Bible, and before talking about what's a sin against God's design, let's clarify God's design and purpose for marriage and sexuality!”In ‘incorporating' the first marriage in Genesis 1-2, God gave us the purpose of marriage and family. Every marriage starts a new family that is intended to help each other and any children they might have flourish and become responsible contributors to God's world.Jesus teaches on divorce - V. 7-9In verse 7 they were referring to Deut. 21:1-4, where Moses instructed a man determined to divorce his wife to write out a certificate saying the divorce was not her fault. This was to protect her in those ancient times. This is one of the times in the Law of Israel God regulated what he didn't condone (see Mal. 2:13-17) to protect those who were most vulnerable.Jesus' words in verse 9 mean that the two spouses were supposed to be together “as long as they both shall live.” To jump to another relationship without clear biblical grounds is to sin against your marriage vows.In addition to adultery as grounds for divorce and presumably remarriage 1 Corinthians 7:15 allows divorce in cases where one spouse abandons their vows, and many pastors like me would include abuse under that.Jesus' disciples understand how serious marriage is - V. 10-12In verse 11 Jesus makes clear he expects His disciples to apply God's design in their lives – “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given” – Jesus' disciples. In verse 12 Jesus is using eunuch as a euphemism for being celibate, the Christians commitment to only have sex within their own marriage between one man and one woman. In every age God's plan for human sexuality has been mocked and ridiculed by those who reject it. But Christians know that obedience to God in this area will lead to greater fulfilment than giving in to sexual temptation. Some have learned that because of the consequences sin in this area has brought into their life and relationships.Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor people who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God. - 1 Cor. 6:9-11

Send us a textActs 17:10-15The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men. But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also, they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds. Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there. Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.Support the show

Joe Hudson is a coach who works with the executives building AGI at OpenAI. From inside OpenAI, he witnesses the full spectrum of human emotion that comes with bringing something new into the world—the exhilaration, the terror, the weight of it all. He feels these emotions, too: He believes AI will eventually replace what he does as a coach. But instead of fixating on that fear, Hudson is asking a deeper question: Who is he becoming in the meantime? He believes that moments like this—when we can feel the ground quiver—can be powerful catalysts for transformation, but only if we're willing to face the uncertainty they bring. In this episode of AI & I, Dan Shipper sits down with Hudson to talk about how he's answering that question. They get into what happens when the thing you've built your life around might disappear, how to find who you are beneath your professional identity, and why Hudson believes intention is the key to growing with AI.If you found this episode interesting, please like, subscribe, comment, and share! The Three “R's” - John 3:1-15The 3 Rs in school. Helps us to remember. Many preachers like to use the same alliterative method in their preaching to help folks remember their sermons. I have found that it does not really work like that. If you want folks to remember something, it has to be short and really memorable, (like “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country!”) or you need to repeat it so often that at least the preacher can remember it. Usually, what people remember is how you made them feel, not what you said. The proof is not in specific words, but in what is printed in your heart! What you experience. Selwyn Hughes: l knowing the Psalm (23] is one thing – hearsay – but knowing the Shepherd is quite another – heart-say.Read textLet's look at the three Rs in this passage: Selwyn Hughes: “make no mistake about it – the image of God that you carry in your heart is the one that you will relate to in a moment of crisis.” Repentance Repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit Acts 2:38David Pawson: “Do you realize if you are ever going to start on the road to the kingdom of heaven you have got to repent of your good deeds as well as your bad deeds, if you've been putting your trust in them?”Rebirth Titus 3:5 NIVRevelationFlesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven. Matt. 16The picture of the snake Numbers 21:4-9 and Jesus quotes this now.The discussion with NicodemusTroubled by what he sees and knows and is honest enough to seek out answers despite the perceived opposition, he takes a risk to seek out Jesus. As a teacher in Israel, he knows the laws that govern and how they are interpreted. Do good deeds, do the religious things and then you will be acceptable in God's sight. But he obviously doesn't know about the assurance of salvation, and the actions of Jesus, disturb him, even though he can see how those deeds were contrary to what they believed. But it was going to affect his as well as their income, lifestyle, teaching, and their way of life that they had become accustomed to. Was it worth it? Is what Jesus brings worth the price of every one else's wrath? Isn't what we do, perhaps with some alterations here or there enough? Why this dramatic confrontation and change? Aren't we all the children of Abraham? Are we not on the right path? We are doing what we are supposed to do with the offering, sacrifices and the religious zeal for the Words of the law and prophets? We memorize it, we teach our children, we do our best to be kind and good people. Okay we mess up sometimes, but we all do it, but at least we belong to the right family!Jesus cuts right through all his questions and his dilemmas and comes straight to the point: “You must be born again.”This means, Jesus is saying you are not in the right family at all. Being a descendent of Abraham does not make you righteous. Keeping the laws to the best of your ability does not make you righteous. Your basic problem is: You have the wrong nature. Your good deeds are like filthy rags to God. He is not pleased with you because you try harder to please him. There is only one thing you can do with your nature, and that is it must die. If you want live, you must be born again.Nicodemus: What do you mean? What are you talking about? How can you be a teacher in Israel and not know this? Abraham lived by faith in God! Jacob lived by faith in God. Joseph lived by faith in God. Moses lived by faith in God! All of them lived in faith before the law came! They understood their nature was the nature of sin, death, darkness and evil. It is not about religious activities; it is a matter of a transformed heart. A birth where God Almighty is your father.Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, as a matter of fact, if you are not born again of the spirit of God you cannot even see the kingdom. Worshipping God is not about religious activities, it is something we do in Spirit and in truth! The breakthrough comes when God enters you like the wind and directs you in your faith and your life.Wow. Jesus must have loved him a lot to confront him so directly. Now the matter of being born of water and the Spirit: Some think it means the passage of water when you are born the first time. Birth of the Spirit comes when you believe in Jesus. Most say it can be a dual understanding. You see John has just spent time with John the Baptist and following this encounter Jesus and the disciples go baptizing as well. The focus really is on what happens in Baptism:The First R is Repentance. Repenting from bad deeds and good deeds as well if they are what you are depending on for God's pleasure and acceptance. The focus on repentance is critical for a spiritual life. It is the forerunner of moving into God's Kingdom. Learning to be humble and repent before God. Being able to see when we do wrong to others and apologize to them. Letting the Holy Spirit show us just how frail we are and how vital and eternal the Kingdom of God is. It shows us that it is not about us, it is all about him!The second R is Rebirth: That is when the Holy Spirit enters our lives to take up residence within us. We become Children of God. Our nature changes from sinner to sons and daughters of the Most High God! Make a confession: I am a child of God because I believe Jesus, I trust Jesus, and I will follow Jesus. The third R is Revelation: The snakes on a pole did not save the people, it was their obedience in Number 29.Nicodemus remembered his discussion with Jesus when he came to take him down from the cross with Joseph of Arimathea.
