Tyler Anbinder details the origins of the Great Potato Famine, noting that the destructive fungus actually originated in North America and thrived in Ireland's cool, damp climate. By 1846, 90% of the potato crop—the primary food source for half the population—was destroyed. The hardest-hit regions were in the west, where poverty was most extreme. Landowners like Lord Lansdowne facilitated emigration primarily as a financial decision to avoid the taxes required to support indigent tenants. Consequently, the strongest survivors began an arduous journey, often walking to ports before taking cheap ships from Liverpool to New York. (2)1849

4. This file focuses on the "antifragile" societies that thrived amid chaos: the Phoenicians and Cypriots. The Phoenicians transformed into a maritime powerhouse, establishing colonies like Carthage and spreading the standardized alphabet. Meanwhile, the Cypriots pivoted from copper to iron metallurgy, innovating with new technologies that defined the early Iron Age. Cline clarifies that iron weapons did not cause the collapse but were an adaptation to it once tin supplies were cut. Both groups demonstrated genius by seizing opportunities created by broken supply chains, ultimately flourishing while their more rigid, larger neighbors failed to adapt. (4)

Mark explains how these operations were not merely opportunistic but well-planned criminal enterprises that included everything from armed robberies to the theft of military supplies.Police Struggles: With police numbers dwindling as many officers enlisted, Mark discusses the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating this surge in crime. The episode highlights the corruption and complicity within the ranks, as some officers became entangled in the very criminal activities they were meant to suppress.American Influence: The arrival of American troops brought both camaraderie and chaos, introducing their own brand of crime and racial tensions to the streets of London. Mark reveals how the differing legal systems between the UK and the US created unique challenges for law enforcement and military justice.Join us for this eye-opening exploration of crime in wartime Britain, where the reality of human behaviour starkly contrasts with the glorified myths of the Blitz. Xbox content and services revenue grew by 1 percent, driven by increased Xbox Game Pass engagement and strong third-party game performance. Microsoft raised prices for consoles, Game Pass, and development kits in response to market changes. The company projects continued overall revenue growth but expects a slight decline in Xbox content and services revenue due to fewer first-party releases. "Imagine yourself, several years from now, having a conversation with your five-year-old child or grandchild. They look up at you with shining eyes and ask,  '[Mom/Dad/Grandma/Grandpa], what was it like in 2020?' Wow, what a loaded question. What would your reaction be? How would you respond? Would you tell them about the natural disasters and the political tension? Would you joke about the toilet paper shortage and the empty shelves at the grocery store? Would you share the fears and worries you faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic? As you rattle on about the complexities of 2020, your child/grandchild interrupts you and asks, 'But wasn't there anything good that happened during COVID?' This question is the same one we pose to you." Laura McKeighen reads the article, "How Many Religious Families Thrived During COVID" which was originally published in Public Square Magazine on April 12, 2023.

Dorothy was the eldest of two children. Her younger brother was well taken care of and able to continue on to higher education, mainly because he was male and in that era, women didn't really pursue higher education because culturally, that wasn't the norm.  Women's place was in the home and raising the children. One of the many things that my guest admired about her mother was that she opened up her own Children's Clothing store. Gertrude loved seeing her mom running a business that she was truly good at and enjoyed. Gertrude loved seeing a different side of her mother's personality, outside the home vs inside the home.Unfortunately, the store only lasted so long because of Gertrude's father's wishes. Yes, he was supportive but only up to a certain point. He also gave Dorothy an ultimatum and Dorothy agreed and made some very difficult choices that very same day and never broke her promise.  The couple did not have a particularly close relationship. Gertrude's dad worked and provided for the family and the two remained married for 27 years. You will hear Gertrude share stories of the secrets her mother kept her entire life. Gertrude is so impressed and bewildered by her mother's ability to keep all of these compelling stories to herself and still be a mother, raise her children, run her own  business and then continue on with another career working as an office secretary for the railroad in Detroit. One of the many wonderful philosophies my guest believes in is that she believes that she chose her mother for "my soul's development."  In other words, she continues, "my soul had reasoning and she was the perfect mother for me. We are together for a reason, admits Dr. Lyons.Gertrude also shares stories of the process of writing her book as well as being brave when coming to choosing the title of her book, etc.About The BookIn Rewrite the Mother Code, Dr. Gertrude Lyons challenges the limiting beliefs and expands the concepts around what it is to be a mother. Through the pages of this book, Lyons blurs the lines that pigeonhole women into limited roles that ultimately disempower them. Rather than operating within a narrow conception of what mothering is, she invites readers to open themselves up to what is possible and see the truth: that all women mother, and that mother energy is accessible to all of us-including men. Rewrite the Mother Code is a celebration of motherhood, bringing spirituality and community back into the experience and empowering women to be what they truly are, the ultimate creators. What it would be like if it was a commonly held tradition for the wise women in our Western culture to support women through the mothering process? What if children were raised by the community and not the isolated responsibility of one or two caregivers? What if all women were united as mothers and gave their full support to each other's mothering choices? Rewrite the Mother Code not only envisions this world of conscious conception, pregnancy, and motherhood, but it also takes the reader into a movement that fulfills the ideals of a matriarchal-led mothering experience. These ideals can open the doors for women to not only take part in the abundance of the world, but also make sure everyone else experiences it. Rewrite the Mother Code explores a world in which mothers feel valued and intrinsically aware that fostering their well-being is the keystone for conscious and harmonious living on earth—a world where there are enough resources for everyone, all life is valued, and decisions are made with everyone's best interests in mind, not just a few. It's a world where mothers are revered for their abilities to create (even ones without their own children, who journey through motherhood in many creative ways), a place where we can tap into our intuition and truly follow it.Rewrite the Mother Code blurs the lines that pigeonhole women into limited roles that ultimately disempower them. Rather than operating with a narrow conception of what mothering is, it invites you to open yourself up to what is possible when you realize that all women mother, and that mother energy is accessible to all of us—including men.In Rewrite the Mother Code, Dr. Gertrude Lyons shares her vast expertise, using her doctoral degree in education, combined with her degrees in psychology, transformational leadership, and her two decades as a coach for families, couples, and individuals. She has traveled the world and had spiritual experiences across the globe, which she brings into her work and writing. Each chapter of Rewrite the Mother Code has thoughtfully tailored reflections, meditations, and rituals to help women get in touch with their innate mother wisdom and strength. This book is a ceremony and celebration of all forms of motherhood, one that collectively births a new revolution of empowered and embodied living.SOCIAL MEDIA LINKSInstagram:LINKEDIN:Gertrude Lyons, MA, EdD, PCCView Gertrude Lyons, MA, EdD, PCC's profileYOUTUBE:https://www.youtube.com/@rewritethemothercodeWEBSITE:DrGertrudeLyons.comGENERAL TOPIC:              Reshaping Mom Myths and Reparenting OurselvesFREE RESOURCE:            Sign up for her mailing list and Order her book  "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Moonshining Survived (and Thrived) At Least Two Decades After Prohibition Ended

History Unplugged Podcast

The Prohibition era (1920–1933), enacted by the 18th Amendment, birthed an overnight economy of moonshiners who distilled and distributed homemade liquor to meet America’s insatiable demand for alcohol, transforming rural farmers and opportunists into underground entrepreneurs who supplied speakeasies. But this new economy didn’t disappear after Prohibition was repealed. If anything, it became stronger, at least in the South. Moonshining persisted due to persistent poverty, high liquor taxes, and entrenched cultural traditions in the rural South, where Bible Belt traditions meant respectable folks didn’t want themselves to be seen at bars or liquor stores. It grew in the 1940s and only disappeared when industrial distillers were able to produce spirits that undercut moonshine prices. To explore this topic is Chris Skates, author of “Moonshine Over Georgia.” A historical fiction novel, it pulls from the harrowing, exciting, and very real stories Chris’ grandfather would tell him growing up, working as a revenue agent in Prohibition-era Georgia.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Here's the link: https://unpacked.media/nerdsurvey This week, Jonathan Schwab and Yael Steiner explore the rich history of some of India's Jewish communities, including the caste-influenced divisions among the so-called "Black Jews, White Jews, and Brown Jews" of Cochin. Using the Cochin Copper Plates as an entry point, Yael and Schwab explore how Indian Jewish life flourished—largely free of antisemitism—until almost the entire population made Aliyah after 1948. Yael explains that the Cochin (Cranganore) Copper Plates, dating possibly as far back as 1000 CE and inscribed in Tamil, bestowed unique privileges to the Jewish community on India's Malabar Coast Jews and a Jewish leader named Joseph Rabban. Beyond Catastrophe: How Ancient Societies Thrived Through Change

Send us a textWhat if apocalypse doesn't mean the end of everything, but rather a revelation of new possibilities? Archaeologist Lizzie Wade turns our understanding of catastrophe upside down in this eye-opening conversation about how ancient societies transformed through crisis.Speaking from Mexico City, Wade takes us on a global journey through civilizations that faced devastating challenges yet emerged transformed. She dismantles our preconceptions about Neanderthals, revealing not brutish cave-dwellers but communities capable of care and connection—even interbreeding with our ancestors during climate instability. The DNA evidence speaks volumes: almost all modern humans carry about 2% Neanderthal ancestry, suggesting cooperation rather than conquest. The pattern continues across time and space. When Egypt's Old Kingdom collapsed amid severe drought around 4,200 years ago, elite texts described apocalyptic horror. Yet archaeological evidence from ordinary villages shows increased creativity, religious innovation, and more broadly distributed resources. Similarly, the Black Death decimated Europe's population but ultimately improved living conditions for survivors despite elites' desperate attempts to preserve feudal hierarchies. These historical patterns have striking parallels to our experience with COVID-19, suggesting we're still just beginning to understand the pandemic's long-term social effects.Wade's most powerful insight may be about who gets to tell these stories. Written records typically come from those with power and privilege, while archaeology reveals a more complete picture by examining the lived experience of ordinary people. This perspective shift is especially crucial when considering colonial narratives like the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs, which wasn't the inevitable triumph of "superior" civilization that European accounts depicted. As we face climate change and other global challenges, Wade's research offers profound hope. Throughout human history, apocalypse has never meant extinction but transformation. The question isn't whether we'll survive, but what kind of society we'll create in response to crisis. What holds us back isn't technological limitations but fear of change—particularly from those benefiting most from existing systems. Are we brave enough to imagine entirely new possibilities?

Today, Williams are a mainstay on the Formula 1 grid and one of the most successful teams in Formula 1 history, having amassed nine constructors' world championships, seven drivers' world championships, and 114 grand prix victories. But it all could have been so different.Ahead of the 1986 season, team boss Frank Williams had a devastating car crash which left him paralysed and fighting for his life. That he survived and that his team would go on to win the constructors' title that very same year is one of the great F1 stories - and it's reappraised in fascinating detail by Matt Bishop and Richard Williams in the latest episode of And Colossally That's History. They discuss how, after years of struggle, Frank Williams and his eponymous team were arguably in their best ever shape heading into 1986, and how Frank's accident in France threatened to undo all that hard work. Richard and Matt also explain in poignant detail Frank's incredible survival and recovery, and the absolutely pivotal role his wife Ginny played in keeping him - and by extension his beloved team - alive. They also outline the incredible ups and downs that played out on-track in 1986, in parallel to Frank's personal rollercoaster, looking in particular at the increasingly bitter intra-team rivalry at Williams between Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet, which culminated in dramatic fashion in Australia. And no episode of Colossally would be complete without some incredible personal anecdotes and impressions thrown in along the way!Matt and Richard will be bringing members an exclusive Q&A episode at the end of Season 3, where they'll answer questions on each of the topics covered. In this episode, I was lucky enough to interview T. Brad Kielinski, Founder of IT Pros.Brad shared his journey from growing up in Plymouth Meeting near Germantown Academy to becoming a successful tech recruiter in Philadelphia. Inspired by witnessing his uncle and aunt's homegrown business grow to 400 employees and his father's inventive spirit, Brad gravitated towards entrepreneurship early on. His career path began with internships in IT and eventually led him to work for various tech recruiting agencies before launching IT Pros in 2011. His approach to building the business included founding a LinkedIn community in 2009 that connected tech professionals throughout the Philadelphia region, focusing on networking and knowledge-sharing without sales pressure. Brad explained that IT Pros' early focus was on venture-backed startups and smaller, less-known companies within the Delaware Valley region. Over time, the company deliberately avoided working with large corporations with skewed terms and instead concentrated on agile, fast-moving businesses and manufacturing companies modernizing their environments. His method of fostering organic growth through community-building and strategically choosing clients has been key to IT Pros' sustained success.Witness Brad Kielinski's approach to thriving in the tech industry by choosing the right clients and building a strong community on this episode of The First Customer!
