    115: Transforming Your Health With Nutrition, with Jenny and Mike Ciampa

    The Sex, Money, and Food Podcast Welcome to this edition of The Sex, Money and Food podcast! Episode 115 is an unusual show in that we have two guests, Jenny and Mike Ciampa. They are personal friends of mine who also live in San Diego. Today we talk mostly about food, second chances and how they approach health differently today. We also discuss Mike’s recent health scare that led to an amazing transformation. Join us to hear all the details on this episode of the Sex, Money and Food podcast!   More About This Show   Mike is a real estate broker, I personally worked with him when I was in the mortgage industry. I met his wife Jenny, a former elementary teacher who has become a nutritional coach. In the last year Mike had to change his health habits, from his mindset to what he was eating. Although you would never have known it by looking at him, his body was very unhealthy. It wasn't something that happened over a couple months' time, it happened over a period of years. In 2015 he was having a great year in real estate, he made a lot of money and had a successful professional year. But he didn't realize how little attention he was giving to his health. For him every day was about waking up, and getting going with caffeine and sugar! The rest of the day was about maintaining that energy through more caffeine and more sugar. His morning coffee was a venti latte with vanilla, with loads of sugar. That would last til lunch, and lunch would be chips and juice from 7-11. By mid-afternoon his energy would drop again and he’d eat a bagel or something similar. It was constant peaks and crashes. So at the end of 2015 he had a lot of money in his bank account but he was a "walking heart attack" in his words. He had some pretty severe symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes. Jenny noticed he was drinking a lot of milk and orange juice, two things she thought were symptoms of pre-diabetes. She Googled it and found she right. She told Mike what she had found and asked him to go to the doctor and get it checked out, which didn't go over well with him! But his family saw signs over the holidays and they chimed in with their concerns as well. He did get to the doctor to have himself checked out. Everyone had been right; his blood sugar was terrible. Normally blood sugar levels should be between 90-100, his were nearly over 400! The meter stops at 400 so they may have actually been higher. His doctor said he was surprised Mike wasn't in a diabetic coma   Mike points out he's an example of many people out there: people are busy and grab food they can eat quickly. When you couple that with our lack of nutritional education it leads to a lot of serious health problems for so many people in our culture.   When adults are not getting the proper nutrition they are raising children to do the same. So kids eat this way too and it becomes a vicious cycle.   Jenny saw it firsthand when she was teaching in the schools. She would see her low -income students come in with "Cheeto hands" meaning they were fed Cheetos for breakfast. She says on one hand it's heartbreaking because that isn't a healthy breakfast. On the other hand it was better than not getting any food at all, which was also the case for some of her kids.   Mike was able to break the cycle for himself through a desire to change both his diet and his mindset, along with actually changing what he eats and how he cares for his body.   He and Jenny were also fortunate to find a nutritional system that allowed him to get excellent nutrition while still maintaining his lifestyle. And by doing so in less than a year later his diabetes was gone, something his doctor was amazed by.   Jenny explains the body has an amazing way of healing itself when it's given the proper nutrition. Nutrition supports the healing process of the body, your body knows what to do and how to heal itself. Third is money because money is awesome, but the other two really make it all work.   Mike puts money first, not for stuff but because he’s a provider. He makes money so his kids have choice, and his family has opportunity. Next is food, the same reasons Jenny says: if you don’t feel good about yourself then sex isn’t going to be good! You have to have good energy, and feel good about your body then you can enjoy sex.   What does health smell like to you?   Jenny said the first thing that comes to mind is summer fruit - there’s nothing better than summer fruit! It’s refreshing, uplifting and it satisfies. Mike said health smells like peppermint: it feels refreshing, uplifting. It clears your eyes and your lungs.     114: Celebrating Our Freedom with Alexandra Harbushka

    Happy Fourth of July, it is our Nations Birthday. On today’s episode, we celebrate Freedom. We celebrate the freedom to become who you want to become and what you want to do.   In my opinion, the Fourth of July is not about corn on the cob, a hot dog and getting the right spot at the beach. It is about our country birthday. Don’t get me wrong…I am pretty excited about the corn on the cob and the firework display. But it is ultimately about freedom.    I want to thank you to the men and women who have served and will serve to keep us free. Thank you to the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in a Free country. THANK YOU.   As we talk about Freedom the questing might dawn on you, what does it mean to be free? How do I become Free? Am I free?   The answer. It starts with self-love. It requires trust, just doing it and knowing that you can do it. There is no task too big or too small, everything starts with the first step. Acknowledging what you want to be free from. Acknowledging what you want to accomplish. But most importantly acknowledging  you.   Ask yourself, what is something you want to become free from? Maybe it is guilt. Maybe it is smoking, maybe it is alcohol, maybe it is a toxic relationship, maybe it is your job, Maybe it is your girlfriend, boyfriend, lover. Maybe it has something to do with Sex, Money or Food. It could be a paycheck or it could be to be free from yo-yo dieting. You funnel that down and it all begins with self-love and knowing your self-worth.    Are you wondering what I am free from? Well, It is liberating to release my secret. It is liberating to know that I can be transparent. Was it hard? Yep! Was it scary? Absolutely. Was I worried about judgment, of course. She’s a branding and business strategist, writer, speaker, wife and mother. She also hosts The Soul Fueled CEO podcast and loves supporting visionaries, leaders and disruptivators changing their lives and the world around them.Today we talk about how becoming a mom led to becoming an entrepreneur and business owner, what her eating disorder showed her about self-love and so much more. Join us on this enlightening adventure we call episode 112 of the Sex, Money and Food podcast!   More About This Show   When Amber became pregnant with her daughter she instinctively knew she was being led to leave her corporate career. It was a hard realization, but she knew that was where she needed to go next. That instinct was only made more real when during her daughter's birth she had a near-death experience, what she calls an awakening. She knew the truth of what she was here to do, and it wasn’t to stay in her old job any longer than what was absolutely necessary. Now emboldened about what she was meant to do, she went back to her job knowing she was a different person with a different awareness for her life. She had to make some hard choices and create change, but with the courage to do so comes a sense of ease and peace.   Amber says it's been the greatest gift she’s given to herself and her life; she's a different wife, mother, daughter, friend, and coach in the world. And she’s a different person for herself. On this episode of Sex, Money and Food, we also talk about her eating disorder. At one point she realized marrying the man of her dreams wasn't going to be sustainable unless she healed herself and worked on herself first. She says she was a mess, she was ready to admit it. The roots of the issue began in childhood, she was sexually molested by an extended family member when she was very young. With her parents support and belief, she went to court to prove she was telling the truth. She remembers standing in a room by herself in front of adults telling them what happened, and then watching them evaluate whether or not she was telling the truth. That would be an intense experience for anyone, but especially a 5-year old child. Going forward in life she carried that experience with her. When her body hit puberty and she chose soccer over gymnastics. And she had something to prove: she played on three teams a year, went to tons of tournaments and was recruited. She barely had any time off, and neither did her body. In fact, she worked her body so hard she hardly ever had her period as a teen. Doctors told her she didn’t have enough body fat to menstruate, but she was not convinced. She believed she was overweight. In college, it got even worse. Now there was no one else around watching over her. She was on her own. Adding to that was the pressure of being a D1 scholarship athlete competing for playing time. She would do whatever needed to be done to compete; her value of herself was based on how she performed on the soccer field, nothing else mattered.   Amber talks about how that came to a head after a 15 year battle, how she got honest with herself about the situation and how she began the healing process.   We also discuss why most of us feel like things should be "hard" but they don’t have to be, and how to find what's next for you when you know it's time to move on.     Welcome to this edition of The Sex, Money and Food podcast! Today’s show is about how to let go and release yourself from all the judgment you create. It keeps you held back and prevents you from moving forward. Feeling your feeling can be wild and scary but it is your gift and only you can feel them. Find the area in your life where you need to open up, let go and find healing. As soon as that part of your life is healed, another more beautiful part can begin.   I know a ton about releasing self-judgment. I personally have been on my own emotional roller coaster the last couple of weeks. I have decided to launch a new podcast that is near and dear to my heart. Today’s show is about how to be ecstatic at work, even if you don’t like your job. Frankly, we all have parts of our jobs we don’t like - there are even parts of doing this podcast that I don’t like!But there are ways we can make our work and our time spent working more enjoyable. I’ll give you my 8 recommendations for making the most of your job, no matter what. Listen in for all 8 on episode 110 of the Sex, Money and Food podcast!   More About This Show Even though we all have days we don't like our job or the work we do, there are ways to make it more pleasurable. We can even be ecstatic in our work life by making little changes to our routine and to our mindset.Whether we enjoy working or not comes down to mindset: do we perceive our work day as boring or stimulating and challenging? Below are my top 8 tips to help you stay stimulated and positively engaged during your day and avoid burnout.   Dress how you want to feel. Do you have that dress that makes you that "it girl" at the bar? We all do! I'm not saying to wear it to work, but if you are wearing sweats you act like you are wearing sweats. When you're dressed up you stand up straighter, and more confident. Dress how you want to feel: comfortable? smart? powerful? confident? Define how you want to feel it and create the outfit that reflects that, then wear it.   Pack snacks and a delicious lunch. Pack something that nourishes your body and makes you feel good, and is good for you. Make your snacks and your lunch something you look forward to having! Eat something that gives you pleasure, it will recharge your internal battery.   Set a timer. I set a timer for 50 minutes when I start a task, and chances are I get it done in those 50 minutes! If I'm close I might keep going but usually, I finish within that time period. Or at the end of the 50 minutes, I decide I need a break; I give myself a dance party break, or I take a walk around the block or hop on Facebook.   Dress up your desk. Dress it up - add flowers, add pictures of your favorites like your family, your lover, your pet, etc. Don't clutter it up but make it yours and make it a space you like to be in. Give praise to a coworker. Nothing feels better than giving a compliment to someone. Do you love someone's outfit or what they said in the meeting? Let them know. Giving praise goes far and is good for both of you.   Do a victory lap. When you accomplish something give yourself a "high five" or take a victory lap around the office. Or give yourself a gold star like you did when you got an "A" in grade school! Whatever it is be sure it is something that makes you feel good. Keep track of your accomplishments.   When all else fails, play hooky. Maybe you need to cut back and you are in the burned out phase, so you need to leave early and take care of yourself. It's not an excuse to ditch early for happy hour with your girlfriends! This is about doing some other form of self-care to replenish yourself when you're nearing the burn out stage.     109: The fear of failing, with Adam Urbanski

Adam is known far and wide for his Millionaire Marketing Mentor business, but he’s also a father, husband and Spartan Race enthusiast!On this edition of the show we’re talking about Adam’s immigration from Poland to America, how he proposed to his wife the first night he met her and the three steps to becoming successful. Get ready to learn and laugh about those topics and more on today’s show! More About This Show   About the time the Berlin Wall was coming down, Adam was about to become a legal adult. In Poland, at that time, if you were turning 18 you had to take exams to get into college. If you didn’t pass you were automatically drafted into the Polish military. Adam knew he’d never make it as a soldier so when he didn’t pass his exam, he came up with a plan to get to the US.   In Poland also at this time it often took up to a year just to get an interview at the US embassy with the consult and apply for a Visa. He knew he didn't have a year, he'd be drafted into the military by then so he decided to go to Austria because it was easier to get a visa to go there. From Austria he would go to the Canadian embassy, thinking the Canadians would welcome him! From Canada he thought it'd be easy to get into the US. Well he got to Austria but missed his appointment at the embassy and went back to Poland. Once back in Poland he thought he'd try his luck at the American embassy, so he got on a train to Warsaw. When he arrived in Warsaw he made his way to the embassy and saw there were no people in line - when normally there is an incredibly long line every day. It was an American holiday - Thanksgiving - and everyone thought the embassy would not be open. But they did open from 10 til 2 so he showed up and was inside 30 minutes later. He was interviewed, and convinced them to give him his visa! He got a two-way ticket, with a six month open window to return. Once he made it to America, he tore up that second half of his ticket so there was no going back. It was his first night in America and he was determined he was going to succeed - even though he had  little money, no job prospects and didn’t speak English!As you might imagine, Adam has done just that. He’s taught himself English, and learned everything he could about business and marketing. He also met the love of his life along the way. In fact, he met his wife not long after he arrived in the US. He spotted her on a subway train and she eyed him as well. He got off at her stop, cobbled together enough English to ask her a cigarette (they both smoked at the time) and walked her back to her apartment. He proposed that night - telling her they’d have two beautiful daughters and live happily ever after!   She laughed at him, but she gave him her phone number. And 25 years later they are still together, with those two beautiful daughters he promised her. Today they have one of the greatest, most fulfilling relationships: they totally "get" each other in business, in partnership, in romance, in friendship and in the bedroom.   Join us as Adam explains why it hasn’t been all “rainbows and kittens” throughout their 25 years together. He talks openly about their separation a few years ago, and why it’s all been worth it no matter what challenges they have faced.We also talk about his business, the Millionaire Marketing Mentor, and the three steps he followed to success.     108: How to Stop Restricting The Foods You Eat with Alexandra Harbushka

    The Sex, Money, and Food Podcast   Welcome to this edition of The Sex, Money and Food podcast! Do you have a mental list of foods you should and should not eat? Most of us do. In today’s episode, we’re focusing on what happens when you restrict the food you eat, and why it’s not a healthy approach.   We take a deeper look at why you have that list of should and shouldn’t eat foods, how binge eating starts and how to let go of restrictions to create a healthier relationship with food. Find out about all of that and more on the 108th edition of Sex, Money and Food!   More About This Show   Most of crave different foods. For some of us we want salty before our periods, some of us want chocolate and sugar. And many of us deny ourselves those cravings because we believe it’s wrong to eat them, or we eat them and then feel ashamed after we do.   When it comes to our relationship with food, especially our cravings, there’s usually something deeper than just how they taste. It’s often tied to a binge-eating/restriction dynamic we’ve created for ourselves. We tell ourselves not to eat something and withhold it, only to later binge on it when we can no longer deny our cravings.   Personally I can relate. In high school I was a cheerleader and we would go to Islands before cheering. We went there to get their cheese fries - and we would get them with extra cheese!   Around this time I had gone on birth control and it completely changed my body. I had put on 20 pounds, which is a lot for anyone but even more so for me since I'm only 5'4"!   So instead of eating cheese fries with the other cheerleaders I decided to have a latte for breakfast, skip the cheese fries and go to Ralph's (a grocery store) to buy carrots and fat-free ranch dressing to eat. And that’s what I did: I brought my ranch and my carrots to Islands!   But then I would realize I wasn’t being filled up by my carrots and I wouldn’t have the energy to cheer if I didn’t eat more. So then I would binge-eat the fries, usually consuming 1.5 orders’ worth.   Whether it was cheese fries or something else, most of us have a similar story of starving ourselves only to binge eat later. As a result we create a love/hate relationship with food. We teach ourselves to obsess over it and start a rollercoaster ride of starving, binge-eating and/or emotional eating.  I did it, and I did it for 10-15 years. Do you still have this kind of mental/emotional relationship with food? Do you still have some kind of restriction on certain foods? Most of us still have some type of “should” and “should not” list of foods in our minds. Having that list gets in the way of enjoying food today and it stops us from allowing food to do what it is supposed to do: nourish our bodies.   In fact, we become overfed and undernourished. Ideally we get our nourishment from foods that are grown: plants and from the ground, fruits from bushes and trees, and humanely-raised animals.   When you see today’s episode can you allow it to help you look at your own food stories? What is it you tell yourself you cannot have: fries, cake, chocolate, alcohol? Then look at how those stories play games with your mind and how they make you a prisoner. Those stories take away from what should be a pleasurable experience.   Also on this edition of Sex, Money and Food I share why I don't weigh myself very often any longer, and how any weight fluctuation would've destroyed me in the past but not today. When you hear the words postpartum what first comes to mind? Depression, right? In our culture we only think of postpartum as post-partum depression, but it actually means the period of time after a mom has given birth.   On episode 107 of Sex, Money and Food we are joined by Kimberly Johnson to talk about this very topic. Kimberly is a certified sexological bodyworker, doula, Somatic Experiencing trauma resolution practitioner and postpartum care advocate.   Today she explains what needs to happen for a woman during post-partum so she maintains lifelong health, how we can support other women and what it means to be a certified sexological worker. This is a fascinating conversation so be sure to join us on the 107th edition of Sex, Money and Food!   More About This Show   The first thing Kimberly and I talk about it is what it means to be a certified sexological worker. She explains that it is someone who can legally work with someone’s genitals during body work. Normally those areas aren't included, they are covered up and tucked away from sight. Doing so sends messages to us that those parts of ourselves are shameful or separate in some way.   However sexological bodywork says those areas are parts of our bodies that need attention too. In fact, those areas may need more attention because of the labels, experiences and misunderstandings our genitals experience, yet never process and integrate.   She goes on to explain that this type of work looks different depending on the person's needs. Some workers specialize in more daoist/erotic massage, some specialize in scar tissue remediation, and some in arousal.   We also discuss what trauma is exactly and why humans carry it but wild animals don’t. But the heart of today’s interview is postpartum and how this time in a woman’s life can be fully experienced to support her long-term health throughout the rest of her life and what we can do in a culture that doesn’t acknowledge the slowing down necessitated by postpartum.   In essence, if you've ever had a baby you've been through post-partum. Post-partum is just the period after you have a baby. Cultures around the world acknowledge a period between 20-60 days after a baby’s birth that is considered a sacred window.   During this time if women are properly nurtured and supported they will return to optimal health. But if they are not well taken care of, if they don't eat the right foods and aren't allowed to properly rest and that rest period isn't honored, then disease will set in and it will be difficult to get rid of. Kimberly explains that this is a time when as much as a mother gives to an infant she needs to receive that equally. She is giving loving touch, nourishing food, contact, spiritual companionship to her baby and she needs that in return. If she doesn't receive this treatment it becomes dysfunction like depression, anxiety, and other illnesses.   And it’s difficult for women to get this type of support in our culture. We celebrate and glorify women being super woman. We don't acknowledge that postpartum is a completely different time in a woman's life and should be lived as such. However if a woman doesn’t or can’t experience a healthy post-partum time in her life then her long-term health isn't going to be good.   And just because someone looks like they are healthy - doing headstands two weeks after their baby is born for example - doesn't mean it isn't damaging them internally. A lot of people exercise at such a high level because their anxiety levels are so high they must have physical activity to bring their system down. Our lives have become so sedentary that our exercise is becoming more high impact. Instead we should aim for finding a balance of being on our feet and sitting down, walking a few miles leisurely or walking to and from places rather than just our cars.   Our entire culture needs to know this, not just women. We can help facilitate a healthy postpartum for the women in our lives by dropping by to check on the new moms, doing the dishes for her, and bringing her nourishing and healthy foods. We can ooh and ahh over the new baby of course but it’s important we remember to make sure the new mom is getting what she needs nutritionally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.   We wrap up today’s show by talking about why people get depressed during postpartum, why there's so much trauma in birth today and how to recover from it so we all have health for the long-term. Check it out on episode 106 of Sex, Money and Food!   More About This Show   Let's start by talking about being a hero: when I say hero what do you think of? Do you think of the white knight slaying dragons, capturing things on a treacherous solo journey?   Something like that is what most of us think of, but that’s a masculine approach. We as feminine women are not meant to follow that path. We're not meant to stay up for two weeks straight with no food, no sleep while we save the world by ourselves!   In real life that looks like attaching our happiness to an outside outcome like getting a certain job or career status, finding the perfect guy, getting married, buying a house and having a family. We tell ourselves we will be happy when we have one, some or all of the above. And we set ourselves up for disappointment with that approach.   Because we've made our happiness contingent on something "out there" even when we do achieve that external thing we are not happy and fulfilled. Why is that? Because we have missed the journey along the way, which is where our true joy lies.   When we go on the heroine’s journey instead we experience the entire process: the excitement, the happiness, the laughter, and the tears along the way. We are wired to create an emotional relationship with the people around us, those people who are a part of our journey.   When we stop trying to be a hero and are allowed to be a heroine we become powerful and dynamic. We can move mountains being the heroines we truly are! That is our ancestry and our lineage: we are gatherers who gather together on the journey.   However society has told us that the hero's journey is the way to success. The truth is even if we follow that hero’s path and we reach our goals, we are too tired to enjoy them at the end of our journey. We are left feeling empty and disappointed because we’ve missed the process and the experience.   I bring this topic up on today’s show because I wanted to share it with you as food for thought. Kristy Arnett is an emotional intelligence (EQ) coach and a professional poker player.   Today she joins us to talk about that link, how she utilizes her ability to read others and their ability to read her and how she coaches people on taking calculated risks in their lives to achieve the dreams they desire most. Listen in for that and more on episode 105 of Sex, Money and Food.   More About This Show Kristy Arnett got into poker back in 2003, about the same time so many others did either playing at home or playing online. She’s always been competitive so when the guys on her college soccer team started playing she joined them, which is also how she met her husband.   In her senior year of college they moved to Vegas and she began reporting on soccer and then playing professionally. Today she plays professionally while also being an EQ coach, a writer and a podcaster.     On this episode she discloses her ninja trick: she knows while she's reading other poker players they are reading her! Her talent is a combination of reading people, being aware of how people perceive her along playing for more than a decade and working hard at the game. She also remains a student and is always learning and staying ahead of the curve.   One of the biggest lessons she learned wasn’t at the poker table however, it was in her marriage. When they met he was 22, and she was 19. They’ve now been together for 12 years, and have grown up together. They’ve also changed a lot in that time.   But there came a moment when it wasn’t working, for either of them. She says we all have moments in our lives when we get feedback and she got feedback that her husband wasn't happy in their marriage. She admits she was blind to a lot of things and ignored a lot of things. When she found out he had had an affair she knew it was a chance for her to look around at what she had created, and assess what she really wanted out of her life and her marriage. She had to figure out how to be the person she wanted and needed to be to crawl out of that devastating situation.   The first thing that moved her healing along was when she asked herself how can I take responsibility here? While that may seem counterintuitive and perhaps even controversial, it was the question that opened up an opportunity for both of them to heal.   She knew she could blame him for all of it and take all the victimhood and the attention that goes along with it, but she knew the way to freedom in any situation is to ask how can I take responsibility for what has happened, even if it’s just a little bit of responsibility?   When she did that it started her road to healing and freedom; she could see clearly how she had contributed.   For a long time he suffered from depression and she was so removed from vulnerability or softness that she didn't know how to be there for him. She grew up with a “tiger mom” who didn't give hugs and didn't talk about feelings.   So when her husband repeatedly told her he felt like she never listened to him she would be defensive and push him away and make him feel wrong.   As soon as she understood her part and took responsibility, they were able to have an open dialogue and talk about their future together. Doing so allowed them both to forgive themselves and each other, to start the healing process.   Today she's grateful for taking responsibility in that experience because it's helped them to change the course of their marriage and their lives together. It brought everything up in a way so that they had nothing to lose. They were able to get everything out in the open. Their relationship is in an even better place now and she's a better person for having been through that. On this episode she explains why there is so much possibility and opportunity in any devastating moment, why we must always remember our partner is choosing us and we are choosing them, even in a marriage.   We lighten up the discussion by also talking about playing professional poker and how it's like the stock market; Kristy explains how she knows what she's earning and the work she does to prepare for playing.     104: How to Do Detox Without Restricting Yourself with Alexandra Harbushka

Do you think of feeling lighter, healthier and more energized? Or do you immediately think of depriving yourself?   On episode 104 of the Sex, Money and Food podcast I’m talking about how we can detox without feeling deprived or restricted. I’ll share some simple things you can add to your life and things you can temporarily give up to make yourself healthier. Listen in for that and more on today’s show!   More About This Show   Recently I started thinking about the subject of detoxing because it’s spring. Spring means spring cleaning, removing clutter and cleaning house from top to bottom. I wondered if we could apply this to our health too: can we spring clean our food and our bodies?   But before you start thinking about pills, juices, diets or anything else that equals permanent restriction stop yourself! What I'm talking about today is detoxing without restrictions.   What are things you can remove temporarily or add that will enhance your body and allow it to detox? How can you spring clean your body?   Some of the ways you can do this are by removing sugar, soy, dairy, alcohol, gluten, caffeine, and any other food sensitivities you have.   But I'm not talking about giving these up permanently, just taking some time for your body to rest. For example I found that I process alcohol at 50% so every now and then I will give up drinking for a few days. That allows my body to release the alcohol and detox.   So think of what you can take out for 3 days, 5 days, two weeks - and then do it.   What about sugar? Today we know sugar is incredibly addictive and unhealthy, so can you take out white sugar for a week? Focus on only having fruit or honey, and giving up cookies, cakes, and other sugary-based foods.   I know this is so beneficial because a few years ago I gave up dairy. It was one of the hardest, but also one of the best things I have ever done for myself. Now I eat it occasionally. If I go to someone's house and they offer me something with dairy I will eat it, but otherwise I eat it every few months at the most. You don't have to go to that extent, just try omitting something from your diet for a few days or a week and see how you feel. Chances are if you feel better without it you won't want to put it back into your diet!   There are other things you can add to your lifestyle that will help you detox. Drink more water. As obvious as that sounds very few of us drink enough water. Add some lemon to it, lemon adds acidity which will help your body maintain a proper pH balance.   Also on today’s episode I explain how going to bed earlier is something you can add to your diet, along with epsom salt baths and choosing more natural makeup and cleaning products. And I wrap up with why I gave up anti-perspirants 10 years ago, and it’s a healthy thing to do for your body. You’ll hear that and more on episode 104 of the Sex, Money and Food show! He believes in saving for the future but still living a great life today - having your latte, buying those great shoes, etc.   On today’s Sex, Money and Food we talk about goosebump goals (what they are and why you want them), how and why to start tracking numbers even if you think you can’t or haven’t done it before, and the exact steps you can take to start handling your money right now no matter what your financial situation looks like.   Justin’s avatar is the female entrepreneur or small business owner. Her name is Rachel and she’s flying by the seat of her pants. In fact, she’s building that plane that is flying her as she goes along!   She doesn't have a plan of what to do with the money when it comes in and she's guessing on her numbers. She is aware and feels bad about not doing more in this area, but she keeps her head in the sand until suddenly her friend gets breast cancer. In that instant, everything changes for her. She realizes she has got to take care of her money because if she don't deal with it then her money is going to deal with her. That’s where Justin comes in. He helps her avoid shutting down about her finances, like she has in the past. He makes the process much simpler and more approachable for her. He also makes sure she doesn’t feel terrible for where she is, he shows her things are always possible no matter what.   Tweetable: “You have to put your oxygen mask on first.” - Justin Krane Here is how he recommends getting started: First, have a glass of wine! Chill out and take the edge off of the experience. Don’t let yourself get wigged out, have a glass of wine or a cup of coffee/tea/green juice.   Second, get your head out of the sand! It’s okay you put it there in the first place but now is the time to get out and get on with things. You can’t move ahead if you don’t know where you are right now; when you get your head out of the sand you can see where you are right now and create a path to moving forward.   Third, pay yourself first.Are you doing this? When money comes in take a certain percentage and put it into a different account. This should be between 10-30%. 10% would be for an emergency fund so we don't have to do things because we need the money. The other 20% is for you have to pay taxes. Most accountants will say to set aside 15-20% of your sales for taxes because this helps you avoid getting a big financial surprise! It also keeps you out of the poverty/lack mindset where we are afraid to take the right risks and grow. On this episode, he explains what the right risks are and how you know whether to take them or not. We also talk about goosebump goals and why they are better than SMART goals! Goosebump goals are the things that get you excited, it could be buying a home or taking that trip you’ve always wanted to take, etc. If you have a spouse be sure you talk about your goosebump goals and your money with him or her.   To wrap up the show, Justin shares why he hates it when personal finance gurus tell people not to buy their daily coffee and I candidly share how I have learned to ask for help in my business and in my life. Does money, sex and/or food run your life? How do you know?   On this edition of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, we’ll talk about how to know if one of these areas is running the show, and how to switch it up so you are playing with these areas instead. You’ll hear specific examples on how to do this and you’ll hear why self-love is the best foundation on which to build your life.   More About This Show   Since few of us are given an education on any or all of these areas let’s jump right in and talk about each subject. We’ll start with sex.   Sex is your life force energy, it's your creative energy. If you've been listening to this podcast you know what I'm saying! If not, think of it like your pilot light - it keeps you on. Sex allows women to be feminine, to create and it helps us use that energy in all areas of our life. It is that fire that keeps you lit and energized and vibrant.   Now food also keeps you lit up and energized. Food is fuel for your body, just as your car needs fuel to run so does your body. Without fuel your car won't go and neither will you! Fortunately today there is a growing movement towards more whole foods like salads, fruits, nuts, chicken, etc.   Another thing we need to survive today is money. In our society we pay for things with money and we earn an income based on what we do for our clients and/or the value we provide for our employer. Even if we went back to trade and barter that's still a form money because things have a certain value and we exchange them for other things - just like we do with money.   Often we get out of alignment with an area because we don’t have much (if any) education about it. Think about sex for example. Even if we had sex education growing up through school and/or at home, odds are it was not extensive. We were probably taught to not get pregnant, but not much else.   No one talked to us about the different types of sex, if we should only sleep with our spouse or significant other, how to integrate into our lives, etc.   Similarly, food also doesn't get talked about much. We aren’t taught how to eat, what to eat, what is healthy and what is not. There are stigmas about being overweight, especially for women.   And finally comes money. We aren’t given much education on this topic, not directly. But indirectly most of us have a money story from our parents, or primary caregiver who raised us.   Often something happened to us when we were growing up that created the money story we have today. We may think we'll always be poor because we grew up poor, money may be scarce in our lives now because it was scarce when we were little. Unless we do something to change that story it will be the story that continues in our lives.   These are all explanations that make my point: don't let sex, money and food run your life, instead learn to play with them in your life. Learning to play with each area starts by having a foundation of self-love and having a loving relationship with yourself first and foremost.   You can start your self-love journey by carving out time for yourself. Whether it’s going out of your way to get your favorite coffee, or taking a bubble bath or reading that book you’re so excited about, make a date to take care of yourself.   On today’s show I talk about my personal journey with self-love and how I began it by giving love to everyone I met throughout my day. You’ll hear Michele share why we don’t need to suppress our fear, anger, sadness or grief and how to actually feel those feelings without acting on them. She is the best-selling author of the Love-based copywriting books and she produces the podcast, Love-based Money. Her books and her podcast focus on using positive emotions in copywriting and in personal finance, but at the core of her teachings she shows people how to embrace all of their emotions.   Today we began by talking about why people are afraid of feeling fear-based emotions like anger, grief, shame, guilt, anxiety, and worry. In fact Michele says people are so afraid of those emotions that they tamp down ALL their emotions. It’s a cultural thing: we’ve been conditioned to hide our vulnerability and our fears.   Along the way we have forgotten that all of our emotions have an important purpose. They are warning signs for us to pay attention to, like anger which means our boundaries are being pushed. When we feel sadness and grief it means something we loved is over.   Even fear, shame and guilt all have their own purpose; fear shows us that sometimes there is really something to be afraid of in that dark corner we can’t see, shame and guilt are there to help us live in a community and among our tribe. At our core we are tribal beings and want to be with our people.   Our society has become so focused on our intellectual side that we’ve lost touch with the importance of our emotions. And that's why people are so uncomfortable when someone is expressing a fear-based emotion like sadness or grief. If someone is crying people will grab a tissue and tell them it's going to be okay, even if they don't know it's going to be okay.   People do so because the crying is making them uncomfortable. What most of us don’t realize is that the person’s discomfort with grief or sadness then puts pressure on the person experssing their grief or sadness to stop expressing those emotions, to stop feeling and stop crying. So even if someone want to show their sadness, they cannot because other people aren’t okay with it.   Which led me to ask her how we can sit with our own emotions, feel them and be okay with them. Michele had several pieces of advice, the first being to stop and breathe. Rather than posting a rant on social media when you feel triggered, instead just stop and breathe while allowing the emotions to swirl inside of you. Eventually you’ll find they will pass and you will come out the other side.   Michele also recommends following a book called The Presence Process by Michael Brown. It's a ten week program with specific breathing techniques and tools he guides you to use through each of the ten weeks. On today’s show Michele explains the breathing technique in the book, why it helps us become present and the emotions-related reason why we actively avoid being present in our lives.   We also discuss looking at your shadow, and how to have a relationship with your shadow. She gives specific examples including what our relationship with money says about our shadow and what to do if you are really worried about your finances. This is a fun, insightful and important subject so hear all about it on today’s show.   More About This Show As I was thinking about what to talk about with you I reviewed my list of topics. Not a single thing jumped out at me so I allowed my intuition to guide me.   It led me to my friend Justin Crane’s book called Money: You Got This and, in particular, to chapter three of the book which talks about asking for help. And that subject really spoke to me, I knew that was what we should talk about today.   Throughout our lives, especially as women, we think we are superwomen who don't need to ask for help. One of the quotes in the book, from Justin's grandmother, is "You can't even see the hump on your own back!". It's a good reminder we need to ask for help from experts and other people in our lives.   This particular chapter discussed having experts come in and help you with your finances, and why it's important to ask for help if you want your finances to work!   The same is true of other areas of our lives. Aside from money, think about times when you don't accept help that is offered to you or you don't ask for help when you need it. Do you not allow someone to put your luggage in the overhead bin on the airplane?   Look at instances like that in your life, look for the little ways you do or don’t ask for help. Do you allow someone to open the door for you if your hands are full?   Personally I didn’t always. I was the girl who said I can do it, I don't need your help! It could be because I am an only child and am very independent, or it may have been because I didn’t want to seem weak or needy. So many of us don't ask for help or allow others to help us because it shows vulnerability, and we aren’t comfortable with that. And sometimes we don’t ask for help because we don’t even know we need it! That’s why it's important to look at your life and evaluate where you can allow people to help you more.   That’s where self-love comes in. Yes self-love is about enjoyment, but it’s also about evaluating your life. Where are you with your love life, your education, your finances, etc.? Find out where you are so you can put a game plan together and ask for help.   And when you know where you need help figure out how to get it. If you can't afford a professional to help you, think of another way to ask for help. Is there a teenager in your neighborhood who needs extra cash and will do your laundry for less? Look outside of the box to solve your problems and find solutions that aren't traditional.   But the first step is evaluating the areas of your life and I talk more about doing so on today’s show. His parents also did not have a sexul or intimate relationship, and as a result he grew up with a self-described “messed up” relationship with women.   On this episode of the show we talk about how he worked to heal his intimate relationships, and how he now sees the beauty in a woman with only appreciation for her beauty and not the resentment he had felt in the past or the need to act on his desire for her beauty.   We dig into those topics a little later on but the first thing I asked him to share was how (and why) we can use our sexual energy throughout our day and in every area of our lives.   Calvin has found it is fun and playful to bring sexual energy into every relationship - not in a way that is violating to someone's boundaries but in a way that reflects the reality of our ever-present sexual energy. He explains that by suppressing our natural sexual energy we make it worse; suppression and avoidance doesn't make it better.   In fact, he says violations only happen because we have trauma around our sexuality. If every guy was cool with just feeling sexual desire and energy knowing that it doesn't mean it has to be acted on and that he can just feel the desire then he wouldn’t violate any woman.   He goes on to describe how men and women are different, whether in the workplace or elsewhere. Aside from the obvious physical differences, the masculine energy is more about doing, fixing, and the like, while the feminine energy is about creation, collaboration, sharing, etc.   And he also describes how the purpose of a woman’s orgasm is different from the purpose of a man’s. Women can orgasm in different ways and can access different areas than men can. In fact, sometimes when a woman has a particularly deep and/or intense orgasm she cries. Those tears are allowing her to open up deeper and deeper layers of her own femininity and the collective feminine.   Calvin says the relationship between the global masculine and feminine has been horrible for so many years, but every time a man and woman get together in an open, loving space it is a tremendous opportunity for collective healing between the masculine and the feminine.   And if we lived from our sexual energy rape, sexual assault and other violations would diminish (if not disappear). He explains why that’s true and how he shifted his own perception of women from caretaking and resentment to one of appreciation.   You’ll also hear why sexual energy is spiritual energy, why we don’t need to abstain from pleasurable experiences like sex and food in order to be spiritual and why he’d outlaw guilt if he could! Today we’re talking about a fascinating topic: how we can use essential oils to smell our way to success and well-being.   On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, we’re joined by Danielle Daniel who is a licensed psychotherapist, a Clinical Psychology PhD student specializing in the field of Psychopharmacology (the study of aromatic compounds impact on the brain). In her business, she combines her knowledge with her passion for empowering women to achieve success through emotional wellness.   More About This Show   If you’ve ever been stressed out and then taken a walk in nature to relieve your tension you know how impactful nature’s scent can be on your mood. Quality essential oils come from nature and mimic what their source does naturally.   Take peppermint for example: the cold pressed oil of peppermint (or any other essential oil) is very powerful. In fact essential oils are 50-75x more powerful than the herb itself. In the case of peppermint one drop of it is equal to 28 cups of peppermint tea!   One of Danielle’s favorite things to do is to have people put one drop of peppermint on their hand, rub their hands together and then rub the oil on to the backs of their necks so it gets into their bloodstream quickly. Also she has them inhale it so it can get into their neural factory pathways and respiratory system to invigorate them and help them breathe deeply.   When I asked her to explain more about the emotional part of aromatherapy she talked about the different effects different oils have on the brain. For example, frankincense is an oil that is good for nearly everything from relieving anxiety to increasing memory to alleviating stress. If you find yourself triggered by the same experience or emotion you can change that by using certain essential oils. Danielle says she used an essential oil the day we recorded this episode: she was frustrated by something but caught herself in that frustrated mode. Instead of going into a downward spiral about it, she grabbed an essential oil blend and it changed her emotional state within just a few minutes!   I was curious about that and asked her to dig deeper into the emotional aspects of aromatherapy. According to Danielle’s extensive psychopharmacology research, nature can tell you what something is going to do by what it looks like and smells like.   Take citrus as an example: citrus fruits, like lemons, limes, tangerines, are bright and vibrant. That is exactly what citruses and citrus oils do: they bring out feelings of brightness, happiness and vibrancy in the brain. Next we talked about being in a forest and the trees in a forest: what feelings do trees evoke? I said trees bring out feelings of being grounded, wisdom and deep roots. Essential oils from trees do just that: they help the brain get present in the moment, get connected and be here and now.   Essential oils that come from trees are oils like cedarwood, frankincense, sandalwood, spruce, white fir. They are grounding and rooted, so they are especially helpful for people whose emotions fluctuate a lot or anyone with special needs.   On today’s episode, we also talk about the emotions that flower essential oils and spice essential oils bring out in us, and what happens when you put essential oils on the various pulse points in our bodies. Danielle goes into detail about the internal intuition our bodies possess about what works for them, and what we need. I read a blog post the other day about how when we’re in nature and how it helps with calming, anxious emotions. She’s a psychotherapist as well and she has a blog about helping people with their anxiety. There are aromas that are in nature and those aromas are essential oils.   Q: What is a mistake or a circumstance did you go through regarding sex, money and food that is has allowed you grow and learn from. Or is there something that you would say...I will never do that again! A: I would say it was a big turning point for me in my career: I went to San Diego State for my Master’s and got my degree in social work. What happened was I was in my dream job of working with teens with suicidal ideation but I went to school and got my degree in social work because my heart was in helping people.   But I had a big turning point when I was in my mid-30s when I wasn’t married and had been in that dream job for about 8 years, but was living paycheck to paycheck and could barely save to buy the current home I’m in. Today is a very important topic, something we all want and strive for in our lives: happiness. We all want to be happy. But what does that look like? How do we find our happiness? And how do we even know if we are happy?   On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, we are talking about why it’s important we experience other emotions to feel true happiness, how not to get “stuck” in other emotions and one very important step we can all take to create happiness in our lives.   More About This Show   Happiness: what is it and how do you know if you have it? These are two important questions to ask yourself if you are trying to find your happiness.   In your pursuit of happiness it’s critical to remember that it is okay to feel sad, tired, angry, any of those non-happy emotions. It's okay to feel the ups and downs of life. In fact, you don't always have to be happy! Unless you feel something other than happy you won't know what it means to feel happiness. If you're always happy it's like you take it for granted.   For example I live near the ocean in San Diego and some days when I drive by it I don't even notice it! The same thing applies to happiness: if we never feel anything but happiness we won't have the awareness to know when we're truly happy.   Even though it’s natural to experience other feelings like sadness, it’s not okay to get caught up in those feelings. You don’t need or want to get stuck in victimhood, self-sabotage or the “woah is me” emotional space. Being in that kind of emotional space makes life a pretty miserable experience!   With all of that being said, how do you find your happiness? One of the steps to getting to happiness is forgiveness. It's the big F word! This is a difficult one for most of us; it's hard to say we are sorry and apologize. But as you do apologize to others remember that you didn’t intend to hurt the other person. Rarely do we do something because we want to hurt another, it’s usually because we are upset about our own “stuff”.   And try saying you're sorry to yourself too. Apologize to yourself for whatever story you've been hanging on to that has kept you from being happy, and then try letting go of that narrative. Look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself you are beautiful, you are awesome and you can do it!   Remember you have everything within you to be happy. Hard times come to all of us, life happens to all of us, but you can make the choice to be angry, to be a victim or to be happy.   On today's show I share a personal example from my life about when I struggled with my weight and the negative stories I made up about the women I would see who had the ideal body I wanted to have. Today we have a very special guest, business maven Kamila Gornia. Kamila is strategist who helps entrepreneurs become leaders online with her marketing methods - and have fun in the process!   On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, Kamila shares her background of emigrating from Poland as a teenager, what she learned from a toxic relationship and her five steps to making you and your business known in the world. Even if you aren’t an entrepreneur you can still learn how to apply those five steps in other areas of your life.   More About This Show   When Kamila first moved to America, she was 13. She had been raised in a small town in Poland when her family moved to Chicago. It was culture shock in more ways than one! She didn’t know the language, she had no friends and she was in a much, much more urban setting than her hometown.   So she learned English, she made friends and she adapted. She learned to take charge and go after what she wanted, she knew that was the only way she would get it. And all of those lessons and experiences served her well when she became an entrepreneur.   However her career didn’t begin with entrepreneurship. After getting out of a toxic relationship, she put her full focus on work and career. Her day job was working at a marketing agency and she ran her own wellness blog on the side. With no relationship to distract her, she began looking for what else would truly fulfill her. She decided to go off on her own and have her own business working with her own clients.   She says it was a rollercoaster ride for the first few years, it felt like being in labor! It had tremendous ups and downs, and lots of growing pains. Today however she has found a better balance now between all the areas of her life.   In the process of working with her clients, she has discovered a five step process they all go through to get from the initial stages of a business to being successful leaders in their marketplace. Those five steps are below, and as you read them remember they can apply to other areas of your life too.   Think up. In this first stage think of who you serve, what you are going to provide them with and what need you will fulfill in the marketplace. Set up. This is where you get your foundation set up. This stage usually involves coming up with your marketing and marketing plans, growing your list and expanding your audience, and landing your first clients.   Blow up. Stage three is getting on the scene and becoming known. Here is where you are becoming booked out with clients and momentum has started. Just how big this becomes is relative to each client but blowing up is stage three.   Scale up. In this stage you begin to leverage your time to bring in more income. Here you create more leveraged offers, more products, more programs, new and different courses, as well as more sales funnels and paid marketing ads.   Free up. The final stage is to free you up from your business. This is when you are looking at ways to become more profitable, manage a team and full-time people who work for you. You are also looking at other ways you can grow and move into the big name status.   You’ll notice the big themes for these five stages are momentum, energy and flow. Each stage builds upon the previous one but once you have momentum it becomes easier and easier.   On this episode of the podcast, Kamila explains this is the model she teaches to all of her clients, depending on where they are at when they come to her. A: My ultimate pleasure would have to be my business. I have created my business in a way to have fun with it and be excited about it. It’s closely tied to my passion: helping people step into leadership and spreading their message.   Q: What does a “sales funnel” smell like to you? A: It smells like dedication, like sweat - like sweet sweat, the sexy kind.   Q: What is a mistake or a circumstance did you go through regarding sex, money and food that is has allowed you grow and learn from. Or is there something that you would say...I will never do that again! A: The one that stands out to me right now is there is a guy I used to date, it was a very toxic relationship. We were together for about a year, and it definitely scarred me in a lot of ways. I put up walls, which I’m still working through and shattering today. But the good thing is that it allowed to stand in what I believe I really deserve and standing up for myself. Because I had these experiences it allowed me to mature and trust myself and be smarter in the future.   Q: The book beside your bed is? A: I’m reading a lot of books! Our guest for this episode, Kelly Youngs of She Is Fierce, has created a brand helping women do exactly that: pursue their biggest, most courageous dreams.   On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, Kelly shares her story of leaving a high-powered position in London, starting a family in a small town in Florida and finding the courage and the daring to start the She Is Fierce movement.   More About This Show   Not long ago, Kelly Youngs was living what she thought was a dream life. She lived in London and worked tirelessly as a high-flying Senior Producer for CNN International. She was married to her English husband and lived near the River Thames.   While she loved what she did, something inside of her knew there was more to life than endless hours, and non-stop work. So when she and her husband decided to start a family she suggested they move back to Florida.   They left London and headed home to St. Augustine to raise a family. The first few years were fun, she had consulting jobs and was still "in the mix". She was still active in her industry and was traveling for work. But over time that work phased out because she wasn't in the markets where there was real action; there were no media jobs near her.   She kept looking around wondering what the heck she was going to do and what she had gotten herself into! She had a two-year old and a baby on the way so she knew they weren't going to move to one of the big markets like Hong Kong or New York. But she also couldn't sit still! She knew there was more for her.   After some soul searching and even a pity party, she realized her focus was off: she was focusing on what wasn't possible, rather than what was. She reminded herself she has the potential to create whatever she wants (we all do).   With that in mind, she decided to act on an idea she'd had for a long time. Over the years she had wanted to create a community where women could discover their true potential, feel empowered, and accomplish amazing things! She set out to do just that and created the She Is Fierce community.   It was a resounding success, women all over the world resonated with her message and it became a movement. Today there are more than 100,000 women in the tribe, and over 20,000 women on Kelly's mailing list. The She Is Fierce movement has held sold out events and has members in eight countries spanning the globe.   To continue spreading the message, Kelly has a podcast by the same name in which she touches the hearts, mind and lives of women wanting to live their lives boldly and follow their dreams.   Today we talk about her community, but also finding like-minded women in your community whether or not you join the She Is Fierce group. You have the opportunity to find out on today’s show!   On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, Jacob Moya joins us to talk about his personal awakening process, what messages the Mayans’ teachings have for our culture today, and the three things you can do right now to start living a more balanced, more awakened life.   More About This Show   Jacobo Moya - or Jacob as he likes to be called - was born in Mexico City to a family with spiritual awakened members. Although he’d been exposed to these experiences as a child, it wasn’t until his daughter was born in 1996 that he began his own journey. Through various life experiences, some of which he shares on today’s show, he was led deeper and deeper into his practice and his life’s mission.   Throughout the years, he has been receiving knowledge and techniques from early civilizations like the Mayans. Today he specializes in passing on those messages and teaching today’s culture how to apply them.   While that is his life’s mission, Jacob says everybody can do what he's doing, it's a natural gift we all possess. Throughout the centuries we have lost touch with that part of ourselves but bits and pieces of it have been seeping into the collective on a greater and greater scale. Soon natural awakenings, early civilizations’ teachings and fully activated chakras will be a natural part of who we are.   Jacob goes on to explain that in our most recent era as humans it has been about the bottom chakras or about the individual (the individual accumulating and focusing on their own self, their security and basic needs).   But where this focus falls short is on the personal level. We can have all the money we want, all the recognition and achievement we could dream of but without intimate relationships and true companionship we feel lonely. However, if we have someone to share that with, then it completely changes how we experience it.   That concept is well illustrated by Jacob’s three different bowls teaching. We all have one bowl for spirit, one for mind and one for body. They all have to be in balance. If one is out of balance in your life it will show. Women can sense this in a man. Consider the last time you met a man and knew he was secure or insecure. How did you know? If you can’t remember then go out and observe the men you see and come in contact with. What do you notice about their differences in how they walk, talk and carry themselves?   Jacob explains that men are extremely fragile! Inside of a man is a thin glass that is easy to break, and they have such big bodies to protect that glass. The bigger the man the thinner that glass!   Women on the other hand, women are very strong on the inside. Throughout ancient (very ancient) history, women have always been the protectors of the family, the warriors, the ones who are capable of bringing life into the world. Women are very powerful individuals. One of the reasons is our menstrual cycle: it reminds us of our emotions and feel them. It's okay to cry, it's okay to feel rage, to feel what we feel and express all of it.   Men don't have that privilege, they only feel vulnerable when lose a loved one, on birthdays or when someone dies. These are specific incidents that are few and far between in most men’s lives so their emotions stayed bottled up. It depends on the time of the day. In the morning food is probably more important! It really depends on the time of the day for me.   There is nothing better in life than…being able to connect with another human being on an energetic level, when you really feel what they mean inside of them.   What does the 3rd dimension smell like to you? The third dimension is the dimension in which we are living. This just came to me - it’s like natural ginger tea. Let me tell you why: the smell is not that great, but it’s so good for you! It has a lot of healing power, and I do not mean the bagged tea but the chopped root in boiling water.   What is a mistake or a circumstance you went through in your 20’s regarding sex, money and food that is has allowed you grow and learn from. Or is there something that you would say...I will never do that again! I started with my spiritual development as a little kid. I took it to another level when my daughter was born. Then I was fortunate enough to find my soulmate in this life, and I was functioning in my regular life with work and all of that. But without knowing it I started sabotaging that relationship, so I started pulling the emotions from the relationship.   So she started reacting to that, this was the relationship she was betting her life on so of course she became defensive. And the more defensive she became the more I pulled. At the end we were fighting once a week, and I am not a fighter so I said no no this isn’t working and I ended the relationship.   My magnetism pulled me towards spirituality and I started meditating, going into a deep meditation. I started asking questions like how did something that started off so fantastic finish bad? The message I got: do you really want to know? I said yes. At one point I was able to get out of my body and get into her body and experience how my words, and my actions hurt her.   Even though I lost my father at the age of 10, this experience (losing soulmate) was 100x more painful than that other experience in my life. But it took me to another level of knowledge and understanding, and to start a mission of working with people having issues in their relationships. Specifically we’re going to talk about our relationship with it and the four main money personalities.   On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, I’ll be teaching you how to recognize which one of the four personalities you are, giving you advice on how to work with each of them and much more!   More About This Show   In our solo shows together we've already talked about love, and food so today I thought we should talk about money and how we feel about it, and what our relationship with it is really like.   When you take a moment to think about money, how do you feel about it? Do you feel excited, happy, greedy, guilty, ambivalent or angry? Or do you feel something else? Pausing to consider how you feel about money will tell you a lot about your relationship with it, and that’s just what you and money have: a relationship.   So is your relationship on good terms or are you at odds with money? If you think it's the root of all evil and it's the reason you didn't get to have what you wanted then maybe your relationship with money is negative and harsh.   Or maybe you love it, you trust that it shows up and you love to share it, spend it and do and buy the things you love. Then your relationship with money is a positive one.   Whatever your relationship and feelings around money it's important to know what they are, and to educate ourselves about what they are. We need to know if money is our BFF or our foe. Only by knowing where we stand with money can we change or improve our relationship with it.   Typically there are four main personality types when it comes to money, let’s look at them.   The Hoarder. They need security. This is the type of person who says if I had enough money then I'd be safe. If you are a hoarder you want to hold on to it, it’s your security blanket. You also don’t treat yourself to anything - you won’t buy new shoes as long as the ones you have do the job and you won’t do little things to take care of yourself like going out to eat or to the movies. You are also the person who loves to balance your checkbook, you love coupons, groupons and saving money!   The Spender. This is the second money personality and is the person who wants the newest, latest and greatest of everything. If you are a spender you buy things telling yourself I deserve this today because X happened. If you are a spender you don't want to wait for things to go on sale, and you buy everything now. As a spender, you also love to give gifts and give to friends, and you probably have never met a credit card you didn't like!   The Avoider. This is the category I fall into! The avoider avoids all money conversations at all times, even with themselves. As an avoider you won't check your balances, you won't look at how much you have coming in and going out. You avoid bills and may even be late in paying them because you have put off dealing with them. You avoid making financial decisions, let bills stack up and dread opening the bills that come in the mail.   The Money Monk. The fourth category is the money monk. This is typically a spiritual person who loves to give their gifts to the world. As a money monk you don't even want to ask for money, you'd rather barter and exchange gifts. "Money doesn't matter" is a common belief for you if you’re a money monk. You also love to donate, and give to others. On this episode of the Sex, Money and Food podcast I give advice for working on each of these four personalities. You can start by taking small risks if you are a hoarder, you can set small limits as a spender, start looking at your finances as an avoider and start charging what you are worth as a money monk! I’m back with another solo show, some one on one time for us to talk about food, diet and nourishing yourself from the inside out.   On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, I’ll be sharing some of my personal stories including the words I’m living by in 2017, how changing our words changes our perceptions and experiences, and why I gave up dairy a few years ago.   More About This Show   Recently I went to a wellness event and we were asked to pick three words to define how we want to go about our 2017. I picked love, excitement, and pleasure. Now everything that I do or experience in 2017, I ask myself do I love it? Does it excite me? And does it bring me pleasure? I also picked a fourth word, courage, because I am going to bring courage to everything I do this year!   Those words are the keys to how I’m living my 2017, and I wanted to share them with you in case you are inspired to choose words by which to live your year too.   There’s another topic I focused on for this show and that is nourishing yourself from the inside out. Keeping with the word theme, some of the words that come to me when I think of nourishment or nourishing are beautiful, healthy, fueled, encouraged, loved, and fully embodied with life.   What do you think of when you hear nourished? What do you think of when you hear food? Do you think diet, gluttony, salty, savory, etc.? Or is there something that comes to mind when I say food? My first thought is of a big salad with red leaf lettuce and tomatoes and cucumbers.   The words you think of could be positive or you could think of food as your enemy, consider your response and the words you use to think about nourishment and food.   And what about the word healthy, what do you think about when you hear it? Do you think you’ll never be healthy because of this or that. Or do you think of healthy as someone who goes to the gym all the time, something you could never do.   Or do you think of healthy as being yummy, nourishing, eating healthy granola bars, walking on the beach and smelling the fresh air? What comes to mind you think of healthy?   And lastly what do you think of when you hear the word diet? Personally, I think of prisoners and imprisonment, of not being good enough, of not eating enough, of not being kind to my body or forcing my body into being something it is not.   I chose to talk about this on today’s show because there is a lot that goes into food and nourishing our bodies, and nourishing ourselves from the inside out. And I wanted to talk about nourishment in case it’s a new way of thinking for you about your body and about food.   Also on this episode, I share my story about adult acne and how giving up dairy finally cleared it up. I also give my tips for keeping costs down when buying healthy food (doing things like buying bulk and buying in season). She was a nurse who worked the night shift on the adolescent cancer floor in the hospital. She was the typical woman who juggled everything, seemingly perfectly. During the day she would take care of her kids and the house, and at night she dedicated her life to helping terminally ill children.   But after a couple years, her busy schedule caught up with her. She decided she could no longer work nights. Her sleep was disrupted. She became overwhelmed with digestive issues, and riddled with anxiety.   For Dr. Joe, as a nine-year old child, it was powerful for him to watch this situation unfold. He watched a strong, successful woman suddenly quit her job and rearrange her life. She changed her priorities and healed herself naturally.   From that experience Dr. Joe learned the importance of self-care. He says self-care is good care; it’s the best healthcare you can find, and it’s free. In his work today, he especially emphasizes the importance of self-care for women.   He explains that for women, especially in childbearing age, self-care is critical. This particular age range puts women in a vulnerable position. During this time is typically when health problems arise, such as autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, and extra weight.   Today we also talk about what causes these chronic illnesses and general lack of healthiness that has become too familiar for many Americans.   Dr. Joe explains that chronic pain is a function of the brain. This can be difficult to begin treating successfully, because many patients with chronic pain have limiting mindsets that prohibit them from healing. Dr. Joe explains that he often sees patients who demonstrate either fear avoidance or pain catastrophizing. Those negative thoughts perpetuate more negative thoughts, which increase stress hormones and create more pain.   Additionally, diet and movement are often a large piece of the puzzle. Typically, most people with chronic pain don’t treat all three of these causes. Perhaps they will see a physical therapist or psychologist and slightly alleviate their pain. But without addressing the whole picture, they are never totally healed.     The issue is not usually divided equally among these three categories. Usually one aspect needs the most attention. But addressing the other two issues are important as well.   On today’s show, Dr. Joe is sharing his insights into how you can transform your life through strengthening your brain, adjusting your diet, and implementing an exercise routine. We’re also discussing the details of his book, and how women can overcome common pain issues. Today I’m talking with you about a favorite topic of mine: self-love and love in general.   On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, we dig into the history of love and ponder why there is only one word for love in the English language, yet there are so many uses for it! And I also share with you ways to bring more love into you life, and why doing so plays a crucial role in finding true love with a partner.   More About This Show   Have you ever considered how many variations there are of love in our lives? There is romantic love of course, but also the love we feel for our family members, our pets, our favorite foods and our favorite activities. We love so many things and in different ways and use the same word for all of them!   Even though there are so many variations of love, most of us are taught that finding romantic love is the thing that will bring us the greatest joy and the most happiness. When we find “the one” we will be complete and our lives will have meaning.   But the truth is we must love ourselves first, and must find compassion for ourselves before we can truly enjoy and feel great love for our significant other.   This idea of romantic love is a fairly new concept. Love wasn't a factor in marriage for thousands of years, marriage was a business transaction between families. Marriage was security for the woman and a legacy for the man: her role was to produce an heir while he provided for her and her offspring.   The Industrial Revolution changed that. With the advent of modern technology, we were freed from many aspects of pre-industrialized living, including arranged marriages.   Along with modern conveniences, we also wanted to define ourselves and our lives, which led to people wanting romantic love in their marriages. Marriages were no longer set up by families. But women were still in a position of needing to choose a husband based on his income and/or earning potential.   We entered into these romantic love marriages with no tools to help us. Most people were not emotionally mature and didn’t know how to be a loving partner, instead acting like emotionally needy children.   Which brings us to today: most of us are still on our quest to find “the one” or we wonder if the person we are with is “the one”.   That’s where self-love comes in: it's the key to creating a great relationship. It's the key to money, sex and food; how you relate to your body through sex and food has a lot to do with how you feel about yourself, and how much you earn is a reflection of your sense of self-worth. It boils down to creating love within yourself.   Which begs the question: how do you love yourself? Raising your self-love means sending love to the people you interact with every day. It means smiling at the person who opens the door for you at Starbucks,  the cashier at the store, your neighbor you pass while walking, etc. It means taking time to expand your capacity to love: see the sun, the rain, and the other miracles in your everyday life and be grateful for them!   On today’s show I share how I made this switch about 5 years ago, how I turned my breakups and heartaches into daily acts of self-love. Today it’s another solo episode, and I’m sharing my thoughts on how to start your new year off right by changing your internal mental chatter with gratitude.   On this episode of the Sex, Money, and Food Podcast, I talk about the anxiety and fear I have felt at the end of the year and how I have changed my response this year. I’ll also give you some tools you can use when you feel anxiety or fear popping up, so listen in to hear those and much more!   More About This Show   Welcome to 2017, it's a brand new year! I don’t know how you feel at the end of the year/start of a new year, but I have often been anxious in the past. For many years I thought the anxiety was coming from a variety of different sources, but this year I realized it’s just my ego’s fear-based mental chatter!   To make matters worse, that mental chatter was not very kind. The things I said to myself did nothing but bring me down. My own mind was playing out a lot of woulda/coulda/shoulda games, which only served to lower my confidence.   This year I finally told myself that I am exactly where I need to be and I am telling you the same thing right now! We have to remember it's a marathon, not a sprint and it’s about enjoying the journey including the highs and the lows.   I'm sharing all of this so you know I am right there with you, when your ego goes into fear mode and you are feeling anxious. And when my mind goes into that fear-based mode, I respond by wanting to nap! I don't know how you respond but that is my immediate coping mechanism.   However, the other day I was in full-on anxiety mode and decided not to take that approach. Instead, I talked it through: with myself, with the love of my life. I also meditated and let the feelings pass through me. Fear and anxiety are natural responses so talking it through with yourself and with those closest to you, along with meditation, are all good ways to cope.   Another amazing tool is gratitude. Take some time to think through every single thing you have to be grateful for: right now you are listening to this podcast on your phone or your laptop, so be grateful for those items. And you have ears to hear it - another thing to be grateful for! You have a mind to process what you hear, yet another thing to be thankful for. Gratitude is such a powerful tool because when you are grateful you put yourself in an abundant mindset, versus a coulda/woulda/shoulda mindset which lowers your self-esteem, and makes you feel more self-conscious.   And whatever mindset you are in is what you are going to attract and bring more of into your life. So if you are scared and anxious and are focused on what you don't have, you will get more of that. But if you are grateful and feeling thankful for ALL that you have and feeling abundant, then you will get more of that.   Try it out, begin to give thanks when you are feeling afraid or anxious and see the difference it makes. Remind yourself that you are enough, you have enough and you are a unique person with wonderful gifts to give to the world, and you will attract great things to you.   Also on this episode, I describe more about my 5 day self-love challenge: including some of the topics we’ll cover like how to make room for abundance, how to slow down with food, and of course, sex. I was terrified to record this episode and share it with you, but I truly believe that it is only through stepping outside of our comfort zone that we are able to grow. Perhaps it isn’t fair that I’ve asked over 100 guests the same set of questions, but never taken the time to share my own perspective. And the truth is, I haven’t done it yet because it scares me. It’s uncomfortable to speak from the heart; it’s scary to open yourself up to judgment.     Although it scares me to sit down and be vulnerable with you, I know that now is my time. In the next few episodes, I’m committed  to opening up and sharing my stories. I want to share my life, my perspective, and my experiences with you.   One of the first questions I’ve asked every guest in my time as a podcaster is to rank sex, money, and food in order. Like many of our guests, the answer is complex. All three of those aspects are essential to lead a fulfilled life.   But since I have to choose, I would rank sex first. Not only is sex the most beautiful, blissful connection between two people, but also sexual energy is incredibly important to me. As a woman, I believe my sexual energy is what allows me to create, and to feel.   Without fully expressing my sexual energy, I am numb. I know that from experience. I’ve felt at times in my life that I needed to suppress my sexual energy. In Corporate America, I felt that I had to dress a certain way in order to be accepted. There have been times when I have slouched because I worried if I stood up straight I would be perceived as showing off my breasts. I have since learned how important it is to use that energy, and to be proud of it.   Next in my ranking is food. Food is nourishment—it gives us life and fuels our body. By eating the right foods, we equip our body to go through life. When we nourish our bodies, we are able to do the things we want to do.   At one point in my life, I was a prisoner to food. I would restrict my diet, and deny myself food. I even denied myself experiences, and I felt an immense pressure to be a certain size. When I look back on that time, it makes my heart heavy. Now food is the highlight of my day! I put food in my body so that I can perform at my highest level.   Third in my ranking is money. Money is a difficult topic for me to talk about. I think so many people have misconceptions about money. It’s largely perceived by society that it’s bad to be too rich, and it’s bad to be too poor. Society and the media reinforce that poor people are lazy, and that rich people are greedy. These ideas couldn’t be further than the truth. I strongly believe that money should not define someone, and I certainly don’t believe money defines me.   I grew up in a privileged family in a wealthy neighborhood, but at one point we lost everything. My parents were wise enough to take advantage of that situation and teach me an invaluable lesson: money does not define you. I’ve learned to strike a balance—I don’t focus on scarcity, but I also don’t freely spend and give away all my money. It’s a flow. I believe that your mindset about money shapes your reality.   On today’s show, I’ll elaborate on how this episode was conceived, and how I finally mustered up the courage to record and publish it. I’m sharing my lesson of letting go of anxieties and overwhelm in order to transform. I’ll also share my upcoming plans. One day she found herself a single mom of two young boys with only a $2 an hour waitress job to support all of them. Her husband had cheated and they divorced, leaving her with $10 to her name. She literally didn’t know how she was going to put food on the table for her family.   Naturally going from that situation to living her own epic fuck yes life didn’t happen in one giant. It took incremental steps and a lot of inner personal changes. She says she was programmed for poverty, having grown up poor on a farm.   Today we talk about how she released that program so that today money comes to her as easily as air, and how she helps her clients do the same.   Marci explains that money is a reflection of the value you're giving the world, and also how much you love yourself. How much money you have is directly proportional to how big you are willing to allow yourself to become; how much you allow yourself to be seen and to be heard is a reflection of how much you are willing to give and how much you love yourself. If your money situation isn’t where you want it to be it’s probably because you have negative subconscious beliefs running the show. She goes on to explain that 80% of what most of us are doing is based on our subconscious, and our subconscious mind is shaped by our lives from infancy to about 7 years of age.   In that timeframe for most of us we are taught that our emotions are bad and should be stifled and shut down, so we don’t even realize what our bodies are saying to us later in life. Hearing where our bodies are hurting is the key to understanding our emotions and our belief patterns.   Marci gives an example of one of her clients. This woman is a doctor with a huge facility in Texas. One day the doctor had an issue come up, and she felt overwhelmed and upset by it. Marci asked her what she was feeling and the client said she didn’t know.   So Marci prompted her further by asking where she was feeling the overwhelm and upset in her body. The client tuned in and said she could feel it in her chest.   Marci knew that feelings in the chest are linked to sadness, so she asked her client what she was sad about. The client said I feel like I don't trust myself with this issue. So they dug into it and got down to a particular experience that led to the client creating the story and the accompanying sadness.   This client shared that when she was two she peed on the floor. She was out somewhere with her dad and she couldn't hold it any longer, so she peed on the floor. Her dad got mad at her and because she was only two at the time all she heard was his anger. The client made the experience mean that was bad and wrong and she couldn’t trust herself, nor her own body. And the client carried that belief into every area of her life into adulthood.   Together they looked at the patterns and programs that were all supporting that story, and then broke those down so the client could begin to operate differently.   Today Marci explains why it’s a matter of connecting the chemical reactions in our bodies with the thoughts, beliefs and feelings, and why we must shift our belief system in order to create lasting changes.   She also gives the reason superficial self-empowerment tools don’t work - and what does instead! More About This Show   Today Dallas Cyr is a powerful inspirational speaker,  a conscious business coach and a transformational life guide. But he will be the first to tell you he was once a mess! You can start to practice this by muscle testing your body. You can stand with your hand on your chest and then speak aloud a statement you think is true. Notice how your body responds: are you tense or are you relaxed and smiling? Do you feel a surge of power or do you feel uncertain? That is your intuition telling you if this statement is true or not.   On this episode Dallas also explains why challenges are our greatest gifts. He says you have success because of your challenges, not in spite of them. If there's nothing for you to overcome then there is no success! For example, if you are running a marathon and you complete it, then you didn't succeed despite those 26.2 miles - you succeeded because of those 26.2 miles! Those miles were the race, and without the race there would have been no marathon for you to complete. You would not have had success without the miles. It’s a much more powerful perspective to take on challenges. Consider that your challenges make your journey more meaningful and they help you shift who you are in the world.   You can either use the challenges to shift, or you can let them harden you if you don't see them as opportunities to grow and learn. Another exercise to practice is thanking your challenges. Say thank you to each one and appreciate that it showed up to facilitate your highest good and your biggest transformation. If you do see your challenge this way and thank it, then what is possible? What opportunities open up in the world to better serve and support you? By doing so you become open, and you are more observant and are more expansive. You also begin to shift your emotional state, your vibration. You become more attractive to the thing that is going to help you turn this situation around, whether that be love, money, etc.   Also on this edition of the show, Dallas explores what first stage living, second stage living, and third stage living are and what those terms mean. The teachings are Hindu-based and Buddhist-based, and teach that Nothing is as it seems, everything just is. Our guest for this episode did and he learned a lot as a result! In fact, he learned so much that now he helps other men speak their truths to create the lives they truly desire.   On this edition of The Sex, Money and Food podcast, Tim Matthews of The Powerful Man joins us to talk about how he transitioned from being pushed to prove something, from ignoring his own truth and his own voice to being a powerful man who expresses himself and helps other men do the same.     More About This Show   Tim’s foray with The Powerful Man isn’t his first entry into entrepreneurship. About 7 years ago he started a business called Fitness4Mum, and he grew it from a few outdoor bootcamps to being the UK's fastest growing pre and postnatal fitness franchise!   Like many other entrepreneurs, at the beginning of his journey he was burning the candle at both ends. He sacrificed all the other areas of his life for his work; he prided himself on how many hours he was working and saw it as a badge of honor. In his own words Tim says he was “...living for some day rather than today”.   But when he met a fellow entrepreneur in August of 2014, Tim realized his new friend embodied everything he wanted his own life to be. This man was running a successful online business, making great money and had powerful connections in the business world.   Tim knew he could have the same things too, he just had to stop denying himself. At the time he was engaged to a woman who he knew wasn’t his best match, his parents were putting a sizeable deposit down for their wedding and he was putting out fires on a daily basis in his Fitness4Mum business. He had bad business deals with partners who were robbing him of money, and he was generally surrounded by chaos.   From August 2014 through December of that same year he ended the engagement, the relationship, the bad business deals and partnerships, and let go of his franchises.  For the first time in a very long time, he opened up and let himself be led by his feelings. And everything felt easy, peaceful and flowing!   While that may sound like it was a scary process, for Tim it was far scarier to continue down that path then to make the major changes and overhauls he made.   And those changes and that new path have made all the difference. Today he helps men avoid doing what he did and change their course by finding and expressing their voices, and their true selves. He helps create their purpose-driven businesses and build legacies.   He explains that doing so is about coming from a different place and having a different approach. He says it is much easier to create and be successful when you are being pulled versus pushing. Being pulled to do something is a whole different ball game, and he helps men find that thing that pulls them.   On this episode, Tim reveals some of the ways he helps men be seen and get the connection they need. With that connection they can be honest and speak their truths, and live their truths.   He asks them questions that help them detach from judgments, questions like what would your life look like if you had no judgment of yourself or others? Almost all of us have and our guest for this show, Rebecca Massoud, is no exception. Rebecca is the founder of Shine, as well as a wife, mother and an award-winning business success coach and marketing mentor.   On this edition of The Sex, Money and Food podcast, Rebecca joins us to talk about the ways we can tap into our inner wisdom, how her own intuitive wisdom has sustained her through many challenges and a few secrets to thriving in the business world all women can use!     More About This Show   When Rebecca was in her 20s she went through an awakening of sorts, which she describes in full on this episode. She shares how she followed her intuition from living in Dallas to a completely new life in northern California. Although the first year and a half was difficult that experience helped her grow and thrive in new ways.   It also helped her learn more about herself, her gifts and what she wanted to do in the world. Today she helps entrepreneurs with getting their mindsets right in order to thrive. She’s even found a new word to describe it: pleasureify! She says it's all about pleasure-ifying our businesses, doing things that light us up and setting our days up so we enjoy what we're doing.   Too often we get caught up in what we think we "should" do. The word should is a great trigger word she says. We tell ourselves: “I should do this, I should do that, I should be here.”, etc.   Rather than listening to the “shoulds” we can instead clearly and consciously choose to do something by substituting the words “I choose to” for the phrase  “I should”. So we can tell ourselves I'm choosing not to be on Instagram, because I'm focusing my social media efforts elsewhere.”   One thing she sees often is entrepreneurs are too scattered and try to do too many different things at once, rather than consciously choosing to focus on a few things at a time. It can be hard to do this, especially when other people are tripling their businesses by doing the things we are choosing not to do.   Even though she’s all about pleasureifying business and life, she also explains sometimes we will be guided to do something uncomfortable. And we’ll be guided to do it because it will be the catalyst for our greatest growth, and it's where we need to go for a specific reason.   On today’s show she also shares a few of her secrets for women in business. The first is that we must show up and stand out. We have to show up in places that may be uncomfortable and get out of us out of our comfort zones.   Then we must stand out when we do show up. Standing out happens through our stories, everyone has their own unique story. Or is there something that you would say...I will never do that again! A: In my early 20s I woke up to this world of transformation. In my 20s I was on a search, I knew there was something more to life and there was something missing.   So I started reaching out to get help and a friend showed up with Jack Canfield tapes and another friend showed up with a box of Tony Robbins! I started seeing a spiritual counselor, doing yoga at my gym and learned about meditation. Back then, especially in Texas, it was so foreign. This whole new world opened for me.   And about a year later I knew it was time to leave Texas so I got out a map and felt drawn to three different places. I quit my job, let go of my apartment, loaded up my car and took off for northern California with about $1,000! It was a huge leap and a little naive, but I had faith. Q: What book are you reading?A: Pussy by Regina Thomashauer! I’ve read a couple of her books, she founded the School of Womanly Arts and I loved her and those books. And I have a mastermind group that has met every Monday morning for the last four years, by phone. We started with a business focus, money and business-building. And this one popped into our lap about a month ago and it was like Yes this is the book for us! Whether you are the boss/entrepreneur or an employee, you must know the details of your clients.   You need to be able to answer questions like: Who are they as a complete person? What are they ready for? What are they tired of? It’s about being super focused, and going beyond marketing demographics like saying you are customers are women aged 25 to 40.   You also need to know who you serve best and who gets the best results from your programs, trainings, etc. Once you have that nailed down, then replay your best successes and think about the elements of it. Capture the words the clients use, and then use their language in all of your content and conversations.   And the next step is to key in on top 5 core problems your client is facing. In your marketing and your conversations, talk about the problems your client wants to solve. Consistently address those pain points and then talk about the outcomes they can expect by working with you. Q: What does starting over smell like to you? A: Starting over smells like sage. Sage is an herb, it’s not sweet. It blends with a lot of things, it says to me adventure! In the beginning it’s exciting but you don’t know if it’s going to be bitter or sweet. It’s green, fresh and it’s unknown - you’re not sure how it’s going to end up!   Q: What is a mistake or a circumstance you went through in your 20’s regarding sex, money and food that is has allowed you grow and learn from. Or is there something that you would say...I will never do that again! A: For me it was finding my soul mate. I was in corporate, and I had left San Diego for the East Coast which is so different! Downtown San Diego was so simple compared to New Jersey and New York City. There was a lot of commuting, travel to support branch offices over the country.   I realized I hadn’t had a date in a couple of years. I had friends but I said there’s something wrong here - I need a life! I felt like I wanted a personal life, I wanted someone to come home to. This was before Match.com and internet dating, so I got out the New York Times and started going to singles events, joined a bicycling club.   I changed my life so I wasn’t traveling so much. I didn’t have mentors to guide me so I went to Barnes & Noble and tried to find books on getting married over 35. I found two, read them cover to cover and followed them blindly. It took about two years and I went through a lot of frogs!   But I noticed someone I work with, and realized he was more interesting than anyone else I was meeting on my dates. So I started talking to him more and it took a few months - he was clueless and just thought we were coworkers! - to reel in his thinking! Q: What book are you reading?A: The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin. She is a New York Times best-seller and she decided to just make herself happier. It’s her yearlong process. I really love it.Another book I love is by Mika Brzezinski, she wrote the best-seller Know Your Value and I am reading her second and newest book, Grow Your Value. She tells true and honest stories about being a reporter, being in local television and how she would accept whatever her male bosses would tell her. She interviews all the way up to the female CEO of Pepsi-Cola. That event, along with several other challenges in her life at the time, caused her to shut down: she couldn’t sing or perform. She left the entertainment world for two years. Later she came back to entertainment and then began branching out into the speaking world. Her third speaking gig was an event for 8,000 chiropractors as well as people in the personal development world. In fact, it was such a big event that many of her heroes were in the audience:  Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, John Gray, John DiMartini, and the like.   She took a red eye to get there and didn’t sleep at all. When she showed them the speech she was going to give, they threw it out and gave her a new speech to do that same night. To top it off, there was no way to use notes and there was no teleprompter, and no podium. She was so nervous backstage that she was nearly throwing up. She even prayed for the fire alarm to go off so she wouldn't have to go on! But when she felt herself shutting down, she knew she had to shift her energy, attention and her focus. From her previous experiences and challenges, she knew that what mattered most was to treat the speech like a conversation with her best friend. Connection was (and is) key. She stayed focused on the connection and letting the audience know they were #1. So she let everything else dance to the side, and focused on the connection throughout the speech. She had to keep coming back to the connection, but eventually it carried the day!   Also on this episode, she shares how her WOW mastermind got started as well as a simple three step practice to use throughout your day to keep you connected, present and on track. Or is there something that you would say...I will never do that again! A: I feel like our challenges, especially when we were younger, end up being drivers and informing us of our purpose. That famous saying “Your mess is your message”. Instead of being successful or doing what you are meant to do, despite what happened to you - it’s actually because of what happened to you. So be thankful even when it’s something that is challenging or tough.   For me there were a lot of challenges that happened to me that resulted in being shut down. I was trying to look at the wall I was controlling, but not letting anyone come near it. I was doing a Broadway show and it was wonderful. But when it ended suddenly along with other things that were happening, I shut down. She saw firsthand how little information most people have around money management, and she also saw the different habits the wealthy have from those who live paycheck to paycheck. Today we dive into all of those areas, and more!   Because her mission is to empower others, she always meets her clients wherever they are in their financial journey. Unlike many financial experts, she doesn’t have a cookie cutter approach that she applies to everyone.   When I asked her what differences she sees in the habits of the rich versus the poor, she said the wealthy pay themselves first. They take that money and put it into an account that serves a purpose like investing in retirement, real estate, etc. They create a wealthy account and set that money aside for long-term gains, it is not to be used for anything but long-term investments. She also recommends credit unions over banks, for good reason. Credit unions are typically non-profits and you as an account holder actually own a percentage of it. They also have lower interest rates, and lower fees than big banks so you can keep more of your own money!   And speaking of keeping more of your money, she has a very simple strategy to develop the wealthy habit of paying yourself first: take $5 from every paycheck and set it aside in your long-term investment account. Then after that, pay your bills. Once your bills are paid, whatever is leftover is for going out, movies, new clothes, etc. Once you’ve gotten into the habit of doing this for a few months, start putting away $10 from every pay period. And if you get a raise or a bonus, put half of that away too. Do both of these things regularly and consistently: keep increasing the amount you save, but don't make it painful! Small amounts are easy to get used to, which is why she suggest starting with those and incrementally getting yourself to 5% of your paycheck. Also on today’s episode, Chella shares a simple 3 bucket system you can use to teach your kids about money (it’s a system you can use too!), the books she recommends for truly understanding what it means to be a millionaire, as well as why you should never pay ATM fees again. Carly is a certified holistic nutritionist, life coach and founder of Nutrition Wisdom. On her earlier appearances, she shared about her battle with binge eating and how she overcame it once and for all.   On today’s show, we’re talking about her suggestions for enjoying the holidays without gaining weight and without losing your mind in the process! Today we talk about a few of the biggest holiday disasters most of us face, and how we can avoid them. The first disaster is the scarcity mindset around holiday dishes and treats. She says the number one reason we gain weight during the holidays isn't what we are eating, it's how MUCH we are eating.   And overeating is a result of a scarcity mindset around the food we eat. We have two scarcity stories when it comes to the holidays. The first is that these foods only come around once a year so eat as much of them as possible.   The second story is that this is the only time of year it is okay to have horrendous behavior with food and alcohol. There is a mindset that it is okay to be reckless now but not the rest of the year, so give in and take the opportunity to do so.   We can avoid both of these stories by creating an abundant mindset, and Carly has a few tools to do so. One she mentions on the show today is to start eating holiday foods at home a few months before the actual holidays. She likes to make turkey in her crockpot, mashed potatoes with coconut milk, cranberries and pumpkin seeds along with balsamic roasted brussel sprouts. She gets to enjoy holiday dishes ahead of time, that way it doesn’t feel like she only has one shot at the mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving! It makes Thanksgiving feel like just a meal.   That’s how we can avoid the first disaster of the holidays, Carly names a second one to watch out for today: abandoning self-care routines. She says many of us abandon our self-care practices during the holidays, and we suffer as a result.   Of course it can be difficult to maintain the usual regimens, with traveling and more parties and events than usual, but having a backup plan in place will help with that. If you know you can’t cook on the usual night because you have a party, then have a physical list of a few places you can go to get healthy meals the next night. Write down a few options or keep a list on your phone so you are set.   Also on today’s show, we talk about the third holiday disaster, what it is and how to avoid it, as well as pattern interrupters we can use to stop binging during the holidays or any other time and why she doesn’t want you to eat salad on Thanksgiving! One of the biggest challenges she continues to battle is one we all can relate to: The Impostor Syndrome. The Impostor Syndrome is that voice in your head that says you aren’t good enough for something you want.   Entrepreneurs tend to experience this a lot, but the rest of us do as well. It’s the doubts and insecurities you have about going out with a certain person, about asking for a raise, etc.   It’s a mindset that keeps you stuck and stagnant in any area of your life, and it is a common experience for everyone. Nicole says she has interviewed the super successful and the famous people of the world, all of whom have dealt with and continue to deal with The Imposter Syndrome.   Nicole overcomes this by acknowledging those thoughts and those gremlins, and then she reminds herself of great things she’s done. But recently emotional intelligence (EQ) is gaining importance in the workforce and in our everyday lives.   On this episode of the Sex, Money and Food podcast, Mel Burt-Gracik joins us to explain what EQ is, why it’s something that can be increased as well as the role it plays in helping us let go of the “heavy deficit” so many of us are carrying around. More About This Show   When Mel Burt-Gracik was in her mid-30s, she was living a beautiful life by all accounts, but internally she felt like she was running on empty. She felt burnt out and realized she didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life when she grew up - not a feeling she expected to have at that point in her life.   With courage and conviction, Mel dove in to find what truly spoke to her soul and to find the type of work that called to her. Through talking and connecting with others, something she loves to do naturally, she met and hired a life coach who changed everything for her.   As a result of that work, today she is the founder of Flourish. Flourish is a company devoted to helping every human do their best, be a part of meaningful work, and have a rich, full life. She is a is four-time Gallup-trained and certified coach who has worked with over 275 individuals on their strengths. She also holds certifications in Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Emotional Intelligence (EQ-i), and is a board-certified coach. On this episode of the Sex, Money and Food podcast, Mel and I talk about what she means when she says people are carrying around a “heavy deficit” and what we can do to change that for ourselves.   The first way to unload that deficit is to reframe how we work. She says we often feel depleted because of our work culture. We still have the 40-hour work week from the industrial Revolution, but it doesn't fit well with the brain capacity of what we are asking of our knowledge-based economy workers to do today!   But our mindset around work culture today is causing this heavy deficit. Deep down people want to do meaningful work, but many are not. People must be given autonomy and freedom, and constraints must be removed (like the constraints around not taking breaks or naps), then people can share their own brilliant gifts. With freedom, autonomy and no constraints people are able to tap into their own creativity and contribution.   The second thing we can do to let go of that heavy deficit is to do things we are good at every day. Mel states people who are able to do what they do best every day tend to have higher levels of excellence in life.   Doing their best every day means they get to use their natural abilities, their talents, and learned skills that are unique to them. If people are given the freedom to mold their roles to fit their natural talents, they will be happier, they will do better work and feel more fulfilled.   And the third way to relieve the heavy deficit is our own internal positivity ratio. Mel talks about the work of Dr. Rick Hanson, a neuroscientist/psychologist, who shares how and why we need to absorb our positive moments. When we have positive experiences, we need to hold on to them and expand and savor them for 12 seconds. After that, we need to absorb them and feel the feelings in our bodies and soak it up.   This is important because it helps offset our negativity bias. The negativity bias is our animal brains’ programming to pay attention to danger, negative experiences because those things might come up again and kill us.   Even though the world we live in is much safer now than in prehistoric times, the primal parts of our brains still hold on to the negativity bias. So we have to give attention to the positive, our brains don't naturally absorb it.   Also on today’s show, Mel and I talk about how you can grow your emotional intelligence as well as why having a high EQ is correlated with high performers, why it’s responsible for an extra $29k a year for some as well as 58% of people’s job performances.   You’ll want to hear all of that and more on this intriguing and fascinating conversation about emotional intelligence! I hired her for two reasons: I needed support in navigating what was next for me and when I had heard about coaching, I thought it might be something I wanted to do someday so I thought it’d be good for me to have my experience of it. She had finished her first college degree and was modeling full-time internationally. Doing so, she exhausted her body as well as her spirit.   While she wasn't interested in staying late at after parties or any of the other glitz and glamour that came along with the job, she was still working out very hard and not nourishing her body properly. She thought she was eating healthy but in fact, she was not and it took a significant toll on her body.   She eventually came home when her partner gave her an ultimatum, and her body broke down. She had an ovarian cyst that ruptured and her heart flatlined four times while in hospital.     Through this she discovered she was shutting her heart off from her yoni energy, there was a major energetic disconnect between the two. She wasn’t honoring herself, her creativity, her true power and her authentic self; her body literally had had enough and forced her to pay attention.   In that experience and with that realization, everything about her was stripped away. She could hardly walk let alone stroll down the catwalk, she had to walk away from modeling. She couldn’t drive a car or wash her own hair. And her relationship ended.   Looking back on that time, Elise says it was hell to go through but it was also a tremendous gift. And she brought that gift into the world through a book she wrote called Runway. Writing the book, at her aunt’s suggestion, became her savior. A: Being a clear channel of love and life, so I can be of greater service to those I connect with.   Q: What does the divine feminine smell like to you? A: That’s such an awesome question! It’s definitely connected to Mother Earth and the elements - like the ocean breeze and a little bit of rose, orchid, and honey. Definitely the flowers mixed with the ocean spray.   Q: What is a circumstance you went through that has allowed you to grow and learn and made you who you are today? A: My life from the age of 4 had a lot of disruption and horrific changes. From then til about my late 20s/early 30s, there was a lot of disruption and I felt it all shook me to the core. I feel I was shaken, shattered and broken numerous times. And when I look back I have had a really dynamic journey for a young person, and I realized I had to go through those mini traumas and big traumas to have an emotional intelligence, a compassion and a loving kindness for myself, my journey and for the role I stepped into. Nadirah Bray is the founder of the Goddess In Motion Institute and San Diego Belly Dancers.   On this episode of the Sex, Money and Food podcast, Nadirah joins us to talk about how dance helped her heal and why she shares that message with other cancer survivors, and women of all backgrounds, ages and experiences. More About This Show   Nadirah first discovered belly dancing when she was six years old. She saw beautiful women of all ages and sizes performing at the Del Mar County Fair in San Diego. Fast forward a few years to her wedding; her husband’s cousin asked if she could perform a belly dance routine for them as a wedding gift. Nadirah said yes and everyone loved it, including Nadirah.   A few more years went by before belly dancing became a daily part of her life though. When her two sons were three and ten months old, Nadirah was busy doing the usual mom stuff. But something inside of her yearned for a social life of her own, and then belly dancing came to mind.   She called her friend from high school, they found someone in the Yellow Pages, called the woman and went over to her house to start classes. Within five months Nadirah was performing at Zorba’s in Chula Vista, and her belly dancing journey began!   For her, the dancing was a way to feel beautiful and feminine. Today she has learned it's great for recovering from different surgeries and illnesses as well. But for all women, it’s a wonderful tool to stay in touch with our ever-changing bodies and to love our bodies as they are.   As women we are constantly being told we aren't good enough, we aren’t this-enough or that-enough so there’s no room for us to simply be at peace with our bodies. Belly dancing is an opportunity to love the bodies we are in, whether we are 5, 25 or 75!   One of the ways we can incorporate this movement into our daily lives is by doing the figure 8 with our hips. Nadirah explains it: you start by placing your feet hip width apart, keeping your knees flexible while slightly tilting your pelvis in. Breath in, put shoulders back, then roll them down.   Next bend your knees a bit, stand with your weight on your left side, while turning your right hip forward to the right diagonal. Now come from across the body from the left through the body to the right foot and then push the right hip back til it doesn't go back anymore (in a way that feels comfortable and safe).   Finally you're going to come through the body from the right to the left front diagonal, and then push the left hip back to the left diagonal. In essence you are creating the infinity sign on the floor, it looks like an 8 on its side.   Doing this helps create balance between your masculine and feminine energy. It also activates your womb center. If you put on soft music, it becomes a beautiful dance meditation. Do this for 5 minutes, breath in on one side and breath out when you go to the other. A: being of service to people and seeing them transform into their best selves.   Q: What does belly dancing smell like to you? A: It smells sweet and juicy...because belly dance is a feminine movement. It’s all about loving it and moving it, that’s juicy to me. The sweetness comes because women are like beautiful flowers, just sweet.   Q: What is a circumstance you went through that has allowed you to grow and learn and made you who you are today? A: I have been a professional belly dancer for 12 years, that was one goal. Then in 2009 I had stage 4 breast cancer, and thought I’m never going to achieve my goals. I went through many treatments of chemotherapy and long hospital stays, but as soon as I was out I went back to dance.   Every opportunity after that I would dance or visualize it, it made me feel like alive and normal. What I learned is dance is really healing, it was healing my mind and my emotions. Just to move and be one with myself and to know myself at different stages of my life, that’s what I love. .   Q: What book are you reading? A: Everybody Is a Body. I love it because it just talks about everybody being a moving self. Dance is movement plus emotion. Our guest today, Rebecca Wilkinson, is an art therapist and artist who helps people see themselves and each other more clearly through the art they make.   On this episode of the Sex, Money and Food podcast, Rebecca joins us to talk about the therapeutic benefits of art and how we can use art therapy to tap into previously unseen and unacknowledged parts of ourselves. We cover that and much more on today’s edition of the show! More About This Show   Rebecca Wilkinson has been an artist for 40 years, and a licensed and certified art therapist for 25 of those years. Through her therapy work, she teaches people how to experience the most happiness possible. She is also the managing partner of Creative Wellbeing Workshops, and currently working on a book with her business partner.   Though there are many benefits to art therapy, the greatest are to help us get back into balance when we fall out, to help us get “unstuck” when we feel stuck and to help us choose one path over another when we are faced with a difficult decision or choice.   And we don’t have to be an artist to experience these results - anyone can benefit from art therapy regardless of their artistic talent level or abilities.   In addition to individual work, Rebecca also works with couples, families and team members. Her work allows others to see themselves and to see each other in a new light, and to appreciate the similarities and differences innate in everyone.   She does this work in a rather unconventional way. She lives in both Washington, D.C. and Tucson, Arizona. For two weeks out of every month, she is in D.C., with her husband and her twin sister, and the other two weeks she is at Miraval Resort and Spa in Tucson. At Miraval she helps run workshops for the resort’s guests.   On this edition of the podcast, Rebecca gives an example of a woman she recently helped with her art therapy work. The woman came to Rebecca because she was out of balance and wanted Rebecca to help her get back in. Rebecca had this woman make a mandala (she explains on the show what that is exactly). As they looked at it together, Rebecca asked the woman if she wanted to change anything on her mandala. It was an equally balanced, beautiful piece; the woman said no, she liked it fine as it was.   Using the mandala as a metaphor for this woman’s life, Rebecca suggested she may not actually be out of balance since she liked the mandala as it was. I’d say it smells like wood that has been hit by hot sun in the desert, than the monsoon comes and it hits the creosote and gives this freshness to it.   Q: What is a circumstance you went through that has allowed you to grow and learn and made you who you are today? A: When my brother died, it was so devastating that we didn’t know how to cope with it. I moved down to Costa Rica with my husband; our relationship had just started. I am codependent and my husband is very independent, and I would fuss over him. My energy was very low. My husband stuck it out with me, but I had to learn to let go and let someone be who they are. Q: What book are you reading? A: All I can think of is my favorite children’s book, The Giant In The Snow , by John Gordon. I like to read things that make me believe there really is magic and that book is about magic. Our guest for today’s show is a master at finding the good in every experience, he has learned how to turn lead into gold! And he’s built a business helping others do the same.   On this episode of the Sex, Money and Food podcast, Steve Rodgers of Alchemy Advisors, joins us to talk about what ignited his business, how and why he transformed his body and how he continues to transform his mind and his clients’ on a consistent basis. More About This Show   Steve Rodgers is a business and lifestyle consultant as well as the best-selling author of Lead Into Gold, which became a top seller on its first day in the marketplace! In 2015 he start his latest business, Alchemy Advisors. The business is so named as a tribute to Paul Coehlo’s The Alchemist, a book about finding what makes your soul sing, something he loves doing with his clients.   The catalyst for Alchemy Advisors came from what others would see as a tragic event: he was fired from the realty company he had been with for 15 years. In 2008 the real estate market crashed, and he was the CEO at the time. About a week before Christmas, they fired him. But he took it as a great gift and told himself:  “...they didn’t just fire a CEO, they birthed an entrepreneur.” That experience put him on a path to self-exploration, higher purpose and entrepreneurship - which ultimately led to Alchemy Advisors.   Steve believes every single thing happens for a reason and that we are empowered to have choices and change the direction of our lives, if we choose to. In that moment and every moment since, he has chosen to.   And that includes his switch to being vegan! During his CEO days his weight ballooned to  350 pounds at his highest. His motto was work hard, play hard. He's always been an overachiever, and he overachieved in drinking as well. He made the decision to quit drinking 13 years ago, and in his first year with no alcohol he dropped 50-60 pounds. Then hired a trainer and became even more fit.   With the start of Alchemy Advisors, he was laser-focused on becoming as fit as possible in every level and took his health even further. He saw a health and nutrition coach he has long admired, and that doctor recommended he go vegan based on Steve’s body’s particular needs.   At first, Steve resisted but eventually said yes and agreed to do it for 90 days. He promised himself he was going to be his number one client. He was going to show his other clients how to be in best possible health in every area: spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, financial. Though it was tough, he stuck with it and had tremendous results. Today Steve is half the man he once was at 175 pounds!   He’s also embraced the mental aspect of his life and become an example for his clients by doing things that scare him. He got into martial arts, despite being one of the oldest in many of his classes, and he also went skydiving with his daughter!   Today he explores his fears on a regular basis. He says wherever any of us have the biggest fears in our lives, that is where we need to go the most. On this show, he encourages everyone to embrace and make friends with their biggest fears. A: One of the big things was I got fired from Prudential California realty after being there 15 years. In 2008 the real estate market crashed down, I was the CEO of that company at the time. Part of my job was to close and consolidate. I closed 40-50 real estate offices in 18 months. A week before Christmas and they fired me. I took it as a great gift and said they didn’t just fire a CEO, they birthed an entrepreneur. I decided to build my own real estate company.   Q: What book are you reading?
