It's Founder Friday! I am so thrilled to feature people who have become friends through getting to know them at coffee vents over the years. They have launched their own coffee house and made something as unique as they are themselves. Nicolas and Krystal Tanaka are siblings and the proud owners of Kohiko Coffee House, located in Sugar Land, Texas. They've combined their unique backgrounds and extensive experience in the coffee and food & beverage industries to create a space that brings quality coffee and Japanese hospitality to the Houston community. Nic, the visionary behind Kohiko, shared his passion and vision for the coffee house after his first trip to Japan. He had already begun his journey as a barista in a specialty coffee shop in Sugar Land. He approached Krystal with the idea during her time pursuing her MBA, which led to them working together on an entrepreneurial project in her final semester. This is where they saw that their passions and strengths complemented each other. As Peruvian and Japanese Americans, they felt particularly connected to bringing something unique and special to Sugar Land. They honed in on the idea of bringing quality coffee with Japanese hospitality to Houston. After Nic became a two-time Coffee Fest World Latte Art Champion and Krystal graduated from her program, they chose to pursue this endeavor together. Their family has always inspired and motivated their journey. Their grandfather, Roy Tanaka, an entrepreneur who instilled Japanese values and compassion, played a key role in shaping their vision. Their youngest brother, Kenji, continues to inspire them as he makes a name for himself in the coffee world. They are grateful for their community who helped motivate and encourage them to turn their dream into a reality! Today we are exploring their story in 2 parts. First we talk with them on their first day being open. Next we catch up with Nic and Krystal after five months of operation. These conversations presented back-to-back give us deep insight into the values, vision, plans, and life of the business from conception to full open and growing. I love the whole Tanka family and after you listen to today's episode I think you will too! Enjoy! We discuss: The journey to deciding to open a shop The Challenges of Being Your Own General Contractor Embracing Japanese Hospitality and Quality The Importance of Transparency and Openness in Service Building a Positive Work Environment through Communication Exceeding Expectations on the First Day Navigating Personal and Professional Life The Impact of Viral Success Adapting to Demand and Building a Team Why transparency and openness are key aspects of service Scaling Operations: The Ice Dilemma Strategic Growth: Balancing Innovation and Stability Resilience in Entrepreneurship: Staying Grounded Links: www.kohikocoffeehouse.com Instagram: @kohikocoffeehouse Related and Recommended Episodes: 396 : Founder Friday: Before + After Edition! w/ Jonathan Pascual of the Newly Opened Opo Coffee. (00:00 - 24:16) - The Ride with JMV is live this Friday from Walk Ons. JMV opens the show talking about the Colts injuries briefly to open the show before bringing on Mike DiRocco, the ESPN reporter for the Jacksonville Jaguars. DiRocco discusses his time in London covering the Jags vs. Bills game that took place last week. DiRocco is aware of the fact that the Colts are playing differently than last year and the team is expecting this might be a tough game. Back-up quarterback Gardner Minshew has a lot of the Colts fans confidence behind him. JMV and Mike go back and forth on the injury troubles both teams are facing so far this season. (24:17 - 39:33) - The barrage of guests continues as host of the legendary Indiana Sports Talk, Bob Lovell, joins the show. Coach and JMV talk about the world of high-school football wrapping up their final regular season games today. Center Grove and Cathedral are two goliaths taking to the field tonight. Center Grove is a two time defending champ ranked 1st in the state going up agianst the 6th ranked Cathedral. A lot of unbeaten teams will be facing each other in their final regular season game which may have impact going into the those powerhouses playoff runs. Coach Lovell says that tournament this year is looking good because a handfull of traditionall good schools struggled this year as they had personnel changes. So there will be some unique matchups to be seen. (39:34 - 43:31) - Touch and go shout out to the Philadelphia Phillies advancing to the NLCS for the second straight year. Does the chacne for rain in the IU vs. Michigan game make a difference for IU? (43:32 - 1:06:33) - Mike Wells of ESPN Radio calls in to the show to talk Colts football. Before the football talk begins, Wells reveals that he and JMV's kids will be playing each other in basketball in a few weeks. Moving on, the conversation turns to whether or not Minshew stays the starter when Richardson is healthy again. While there is a lot of positivity around Minshews play so far this season is it important you have him start to make a playoff push or develop Richardson more. JMV and Wells believe that Colt's head-coach Shane Steichen has a lot more control over this team than previous coaches have. The two go back and forth about what they think the Indiana Pacers final record is going to be this season. (1:06:34 - 1:23:07) - Next up on the guest list is Spero Dedes of CBS Sports. Spero believes that Minshew is a back-up quarterback that knows what he is stepping into and can lead the team while Richardson is injured. Coming back to Jacksonville where Minshew-mania started there will be a lot of momentum and something to prove for him as a quarterback. What pressure is there to give more snaps to Jonathan Taylor with his new contract and his return from injury? Will Zack Moss's momentum as runningback persist for most of the season? As a broadcaster does Dedes give any credit to a stat like "The Colts haven't won in Jacksonville since 2014." (1:23:08 - 1:27:11) - JMV and Chris Hagan discuss Friday the 13th and other horror movies they remember growing up. (1:27:12 - 1:53:50) - Voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer talk with JMV. He is already in Michigan getting prepared for IU's matchup against the second ranked Wolverines. The rivalry between IU and Michigan has been one sided for the past two decades, however the Hoosier did beat them as recently as 2020. Fischer says not to be surprised if they are at least able to stay competitive during the game. Two freshman quarterbacks trying to earn IU's starting spot is not beneficial to the team according to Fischer. It leads to two young players starting to fall behind on gaining the experience neccessary to lead a championship capable football team. Fischer believes that Tom Allen's coaching strategy is not going to change as the season moves on. He just wants his team to get the job done. Don and JMV talk about The Eagles farewell show in Indy last week. (1:53:51 - 2:06:42) - Justin Dunk of the Bleav podcast network for the Jackson Jaguars and 3DownNation is the final of six guests on the jam packed Friday show. Dunk claims that Jacksonville takes pride in the way they've defended the home field against the Colts over the years. Dunk talks about how the team has really prioritized their players energy. He gives the fact that Jacksonville was in London well before Buffalo made it there and that might have made them the better team as they had longer to adjust to the time zone. The Jags have a mentality where they are ready to really surprise people by making the playoffs again and making a run post-season run. (2:06:43 - 2:08:00) - Touch and go Outro previewing next week.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Founder Friday! I am thrilled to be able to feature a conversation with an old friend and coffee OG, Jeff Taylor. Jeff is the Co-Founder and CEO of the legendary PT's Coffee Roasters in Topeka, KS and the Owner/ President of Bird Rock Coffee in San Diego, CA. In todays episode we dive into Jeff's 27 year journey from founding a small shop called PT's with his business partner Fred Polzin to now being at the helm of an amazing team of coffee professionals that run 10 cafes and two wholesale roasting company’s in 3 states. Jeff left a very successful career in photo journalism to work fully in coffee and I am so glad he did. PT's has been at the forefront of many of our industries firsts. Jeff worked with a select group to develop what eventually became the United States Barista Competition (USBC), dating back to 1999. Jeff made the transition to Coffee Buyer for PT's Coffee in 2004 and began the process of building relationships with producers around the world which led to forming one of the first Direct Trade models. (Today, PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. Coffee and Bird Rock Coffee Roasters (acquired in 2017) source approximately 85% of our coffee’s directly from farmers) Jeff also served one term on the Specialty Coffee Association of America's Board of Directors through 2010 after which he returned to focus on growing the business sharing sourcing responsibilities with his wife, Maritza Taylor, and Director of Operations Brent Pipiergerdes, so that he could lead the transition and purchase of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in San Diego, CA. In 2016. This has been a long and winding path leading to what is undeniably a great coffee career. Patience, relationships, stubbornness, dedication, and trusting your gut are just a few of the themes that emerge here and I feel like we can all see a bit of ourselves and our star in Jeff's. I hope you enjoy this episode. Like Jeff's career, it's a bit on the long side but worth every minute to be able to learn from one of the original specialty coffee professionals. How do you decide which opportunity for expansion is good and which one is not for you? If you are in business you will get offers to open a location in many different contexts but when you are knee deep in operating your first store it can be challenging to see the next step clearly. Today we are getting the perspective of one entrepreneur who is expanding to a second location within the first year of opening his first shop. Kyle Wells is the co-owner of Torpedo Coffee in Denver, CO and a past Founder Friday guest. I wanted to bring Kyle back to give us insight into his own process of accessing opportunities and making the decision to say yes to one of many the have been made since opening. Kyle and his wife Falene are are true entrepreneurs and Kyle communicates very clearly and with a balanced perspective about that life and in this interview he lays out a lot of very useful information that you can use to help you on your own journey In the conversation you will learn: How this opportunity won Kyle over The signs that you are ready to say yes to expanding How to prepare yourself for the added responsibility How to prepare you team and invest into the current culture The importance of delegation, systems, and trust The importance of working "on" your business not "in" it Kyles advice for how to assess opportunity Links: @Torpedocoffee @theclosequarters www.torpedocoffee.com Founder Friday w/ Kyle Wells "Before and After" Need consulting or training? Season 2, Episode 30 – This week’s episode is all about homebrew, more specifically, homebrew from 4B super-fan Kyle Wells! Homebrew, homebrew, and more homebrew. This week it’s all about homebrew. We’ve got four on the show this week, three of which are from 4B Patron and super-fan Kyle Wells, and the from our very own Greg Nagel. Kyle gave us these brews a couple of months ago with the expectation that we’d try them on the show and give him some feedback. Spoiler alert: Kyle is a great brewer. Kyle Wells’ Homebrew Not too long ago, Greg brewed a batch of saison that was split up with the intent of making different beers from the same ten gallon batch. With this beer, he added some Anaheim chilies to the mix. Greg’s wife is a fan of chili beers, and this one was made just for her. Chili beers can be difficult to make. Getting the right balance of heat, chili aroma, and chili flavor is tricky. Getting it right takes a bit of trial and error. We all agree that this brew turned out well. Thanks for the brews, Kyle, and keep up the great work! BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
