Tomme hinted at it earlier in the week that there was a Double IPA in their line up of new Lost Abbey beers...as we wrap up the week, he delivered!
With a new tasting room comes new beers and whole portfolio of different styles. Bingo Lady is a blonde for the sophisticated and some might even say eternally classy version of a Blonde Ale.
Being a fan of San Diego beers, if someone mentions the style Rye IPA there is one beer in specific many people think of, this is not that beer. In fact, this beer doesn't even resemble that, Unseen Things is it's own unique take on making a Tropical Rye IPA that is a must try beer.
This beer evokes it's name sake, drinking this IPA will bring you into the right side of happiness. Brewed with a currently experimental hop it blends the line between traditional West Coast IPAs and today's more tropical/hazy IPAs.
Lots to talk about with Tomme from The Lost Abbey! He's got a brand new tasting room in Vista along with a lot of new beers they are pumping out of it. Oddly enough we're starting off the week with not a new beer or hard seltzer, but hop water called Holy Water.
We end a fantastic week of celebration with a celebration beer! Originally created for the 25th Anniversary of O'Brien's we pop the cork on this Lost Abbey monster and toast to 30 years of O'Brien's and their standing as The best beer bar in America.

Hey guys, today I have a story for you that's very special to me. Lost Abbey is a brewery out of San Diego that needs no introduction. Tomme and the team over there have inspired breweries all over the world to push beyond the ordinary and intentionally create new and exciting beers of circumstance. They were a fundamental part of what created my perception of the expectations I wanted my brewery to live up to and I know I'm not alone in that. We've talked repeatedly on this show about how specialization is dead. Niches get stitches as I've started saying. 14% abv beers aged in multiple barrels for multiple years, obscure, even historical styles and yes, even mixed culture sour beers have been shrinking in popularity and, subsequently, profitability. The Lost Abbey was one of the pioneers in the American speciality brewery category. So when I heard that they reduced their square footage, equipment and staff I knew that it was a story I needed to dig into and share with y'all. Tomme was nice enough to sit with me for two hours, answer my probing questions and share what he'd found out the hard way. There is backstory, pain, business lessons, hope for the future and of course, insights into How NOT To Start A Damn Brewery. Pads showed up in Mexico City. THC gets a shout-out. And one city in North County reigns supreme in the sandwich game. Enjoy!
The Lost Abbey is in the process of scaling down the business. Tomme Arthur discusses the process of growing by getting smaller, the opportunities he sees ahead for the Southern California-based brewery and the evolution of the craft brewing industry.
It's a double dose of non-barrel aged barleywine when Alex brings in Life from Breakside Brewing and Stephen finds a dusty Canadian classic lurking among the shelves. Alex also brings in a pastry stout from Tennessee that has the Malty Boyz™ chasing waterfalls. In the Beer News, Lost Abbey takes a step back to reevaluate their business model, a head brewer starts an OnlyFans to boost her income, and Bud Light Seltzer has to dig itself out of a hole it dug itself into and steps on many rakes along the way. It's a beer known by many names, but this cuvee is 3 years away from getting it's drivers license. Think about that!
It's been a great week of beers with himself (aka Tomme Arthur) tonight with finish off our Christmas cheer with a big, BIG beer.
2022 has been rough on craft beer. From the macroeconomic forces hitting the entire economy—rising rents, rampant inflation in raw materials and logistics costs, shortages, rising labor costs—to the industry-specific challenges like changing consumer interest in packaging formats, shifting beer styles, distributor focuses, changing draft beer landscape, and more, it's become increasingly difficult to operate brewing businesses successfully. For Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey cofounder Tomme Arthur, the solution is to "grow down," or get comfortable being smaller. For so many breweries, planning for future growth has always informed every decision, from branding to brewhouse, but after 17 years of constant reinvestment into future growth that now looks like an unreachable horizon, Arthur is having second thoughts. In this episode, recorded initially for a written Q&A in the latest issue of our Brewing Industry Guide, Arthur shares his perspective on topics like: dealing with brewery square footage that isn't generating revenue challenges in shallow and wide distribution distributor consolidation and changing priorities the hidden cost increases in triple net commercial leases rising raw materials costs the shift in consumer interest in sour beer revamping the existing brewhouse to be more attuned to proper inventory levels the hidden costs of operating more taproom locations And more. "Last month I was in Toronto as a judge for the inaugural Canada Beer Cup. Over the course of three very very long days I was seated across from Matt Tweedy, the co-founder and brewing director of Tooth and Nail Brewing in Ottawa. By the lunch break on the first day I knew he needed to be on the show. Aside from having a great palate and brewing insight, he's a thoughtful guy who genuinely cares about the beers he's making and the overall direction of brewing not only in Canada but globally. Before opening the doors of his brewpub he learned from some of the very best on the planet including stints at Cantillon, Fullers, and The Lost Abbey. Those experiences continue to shape his beer today and help with the overall education and flavor experience that patrons get every time they open one of his beers or step into the bar."-John HollThis Episode is Sponsored By:Pro BrewerWe bring original articles to ProBrewer.com twice a week covering issues important to the beer industry and aimed at helping breweries of all sizes understand different facets of the business. On the first episode of the Brewer to Brewer podcast Tomme Arthur of The Lost Abbey interviews Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Souls Brewing. Eventually the conversation turns to Black is Beautiful, the global collaboration that Baskerville and the brewery spearheaded. To date more than 1,200 breweries in 22 countries have brewed and released the beer which aims to “raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged.” Much has been said and chronicled about the beer and its history but Arthur wanted to go a little deeper and do a fresh check in. The Brew is Out There! Belgian yeasts and hops don't mix - at least not until recently - unless we're talking about Belgian Pale Ale. It's an odd mix of British and Belgian flavors and approaches. So, I sit down with San Diego's Belgian beer fanatic par excellence, Tomme Arthur of Lost Abbey Brewing to break down how we'd make our own Belgian Pale Ale.
