In this episode of "Rhythms That Restore," Cherisse welcomes her long-time friend Whitney Blomberg from Chattanooga, Tn. Whitney shares her deeply personal journey through infertility, motherhood and mental health challenges. Whitney discusses her struggles with control, multiple miscarriages, and a rare lymphoma diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of surrendering to God's plan. She highlights the support of friends and community during the deep valleys of life and the power of faith in overcoming obstacles. The conversation also touches on practical tools for managing anxiety and the significance of sharing struggles to foster connection and healing. Whitney's story inspires listeners to embrace their own journeys with hope and resilience. "No matter what season you're walking in (motherhood, boss babing, waiting, the hard, the happy, any of it) is that your circumstances don't define your life or your joy. It is possible to find real revival of your heart and your spirit in the very mundance parts of your day. If you are feeling run down or defeated in the trenches with little ones, know that Jesus can inhabit that little bedroom while you sing "Oh How I Love Jesus" before bedtime. If you're young or a student and overwhelmed with future things, know that Jesus is just as real to you during that study session as He was in the Resurrection. If you are in a season of waiting, like we wanted during infertility - you are not forgotten, you are not being punished, He cares for you and He remembers you. No matter what season you are in, Jesus is the eqalizer and He is your joy. Lahtelaisilta toivotaan jälleen ideoita "Osbuun", eli osallistuvaan budjetointiin. Eniten ääniä saaneet ideat toteutetaan osallistuvan budjetoinnin tuella vuonna 2026. Napakasti vaan, suunnitteluhortonomi painotti. Kuuntele koko haastattelu.

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Craig Blomberg about his brand-new book ‘Jesus the Purifier: John's Gospel and the Fourth Quest for the Historical Jesus', out now on Baker Academic. Blomberg reviews the history of the first three ‘Quests' for the historical Jesus, explaining how historical Jesus research has developed over time. He explains why, from the beginnings of modern Jesus research, the gospel of John was almost universally rejected as an historical source for reconstructing the life of Jesus. He then demonstrates that many advances have been made in studies of John over the last 40 years, and argues that John is indeed a viable historical source, offering us insight into the life of Jesus that is missing in synoptic-oriented research. He explores the theme of ‘purity' in the gospel of John and explains how it must go back to the historical Jesus himself. He then explains how a fourth quest needs to incorporate John as a historical source and why the proposed ‘Next Quest' will be incomplete without a reevaluation of John.  Media Referenced:Jesus the Purifier: https://a.co/d/ifeRf8dCraig Blomberg Bio: https://denverseminary.edu/directory/blomberg-phd-craig/Blomberg Amazon Page: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Craig-Blomberg/author/B001HCY7S6?ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=trueThe Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. Dr. Blomberg answers these questions and discusses the emerging consensus regarding demonstrably historical portions of John. '44 – May ‘45 Clem Leone was born in Baltimore in 1924.  He had two brothers and three sisters and one of his brothers served in the Merchant Marines during WW II.  I asked Clem what he remembered of growing up during the Great Depression.  “It was tough makin' a living.  Not enough food to eat.”  Clem had a step father who was a railroad telegrapher.  “He made an above average salary for the time, but even so, we had to scrounge everywhere we could to get food.”  Clem attended Southern High School, loved his experience, and characterized himself as a nerd.  “I went there to learn and I graduated with honors.” When the war broke out Clem was 17.  He wanted to enlist but his mother wouldn't let him.  “When they started drafting 18 year olds she let me go.”  Clem enlisted in November of '42.  The Army gave him several tests to identify his skills which would then be used to determine his military occupation.  Clem did well on the radio test and had he had the option of radio school or auto and truck mechanic school.  Clem had already taken auto shop in high school so he figured he should learn something else and he selected radio school.  Clem headed to Fort Pickett in Virginia and then to Miami Florida for basic training.  At the time the Army needed radio operators so badly that they shortened his basic training and sent him to radio school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  There he spent 13 weeks having “morse code pounded into you.”  Clem wanted to fly and after passing a physical for flying he went to gunnery school to learn every weapon on the aircraft.  The training was primitive but creative for the time and the technology available.   Next stop for Clem was Boise, Idaho where the gunners were teamed with a pilot, co-pilot, engineer and bombardier.  There were a total of 10 in the crew for the B24 Liberator.  The crew was sent to Sioux Falls where they practiced formation flying and Clem was assigned primary responsibility for the radio and secondary responsibility for the upper machine gun turret.  In November of '43 they left for Europe.  They headed for England via Brazil and then to the Ascension Islands.  “The Ascension Islands were a tiny speck in the middle of the ocean.  My thought right away was, the Navigator just got out of cadet training.  I hope he learned his lessons.”  The Navigator got them to the Ascension Islands where they had Thanksgiving dinner while they plane was serviced.  They then flew to Africa and then to Tibenham, England.  Clem was in the 700th Squadron and Jimmy Stewart was a pilot in the 701st Squadron.  One day Jimmy Stewart needed a radio operator to go on a training flight so he could check out a new pilot.  Clem volunteered.  “He was very strict.  You never would have guessed he was a movie star celebrity.” The crew's first flight in December '43 was a training mission to get accustomed to a new pilot.  During the flight, the number 4 engine caught fire and they were able to extinguish the flames.  The pilot was looking to make an emergency landing when the number 1 engine caught fire.  The pilot hit the bail out button and the crew ejected.  Clem didn't get out of the plane until they were at 800 feet, and he hit the ground so hard he broke his leg.  All but the pilot made it out alive. On February 4th of 1944 they had their first mission that took then into Frankfurt, Germany.  They loaded onto their plane, the “Wacky Donald” and headed for Germany.  Clem recalled the flight was uneventful, with lots of flack but no Nazi fighter planes.  They arrived at their target, dropped their bombs, and started to make their turn to head back to England.  One of the planes in the formation above the Wacky Donald had one bomb stuck in its bomb bay and when it released it hit the number two engine on the Wacky Donald.  Clem looked at the window to find a huge hole in the wing.  This forced them to drop out of formation and head back to Tibenham at a much slower speed than the rest of the formation.  The pilot ordered the crew to throw all non-essential equipment, including all but 50 rounds per machine gun, out of the bomb bay to lighten the plane to maintain their altitude.  They were 5 to 6 hours from home. Clem (lower left) with his crew. Top center is Lt. Robert Blomberg, an up and comer with the 445th Bomb Group who died at the controls when his ship blew up. Others in the crew were also KIA. Notable in this team photo is the small man next to Blomberg, Lt. Donald Widmark, co-pilot and brother of future actor Richard Widmark. The co-pilot would grab a parachute and leave Blomberg behind 75 years ago today. Clem's personal rule was to stay with the ship as long as the officers did, but when he saw Widmark bail out, he said, “It was time for this guy to go.” The plane and crew limped home and didn't hit any resistance until they received heavy flack over the coast of France just before they headed over the English Channel.  The plane dropped to about 4,000 feet and then received a radio transmission, “fighters at 6 o'clock.”  Two ME-109 were closing on the Wacky Donald.  Clem was in the upper gun turret and swung the guns around and took aim at the ME-109's.  Another transmission blared “fighters at 12 o'clock.”  Clem pivoted to 12 o'clock and saw a wonderful sight; two British Spitfires.  “Boy, they were beautiful.”  The Spitfires took out one of the Nazi planes and one of the Spitfires chased the other ME-109 back to France.  The Wacky Donald continued back to their air field and Clem recalled, “The White Cliffs of Dover….man they were beautiful!”.  The runway came into sight, but the excitement wasn't over.  The pilot said “I have to put us into a dive to get enough speed to land.  Put the landing gear into the down position and just pray they lock.”  Their prayers were answered, and the pilot got them home in one piece.  “None of us were hurt, but we did a lot of sweating.” With two near misses under his belt Clem flew 4 more missions into Germany and France without incident.  With D-Day looming, Operation Argument was developed.  The objective was sustained and heavy bombing of aviation related targets in Germany.  This was also known as “Big Week”.  The crew of the "Wacky Donald" received orders to bomb a ball bearing plant in Gotha Germany, 145 miles west of Dresden.  “That was a long flight.”  The 20 plane formation took off on February 24 '44.  While making their way to the target they came under attack by the Luftwaffe using Fokker 190's.   The enemy aircraft unleashed a barrage of incendiary rockets directly at the aft section of the "Wacky Donald." Clem was on the radio when he heard a tremendous explosion and saw flames begin to consume the plane. Amidst the chaos and the 200-mile-per-hour slipstream, Clem gripped the barrels of the top turret machine gun, a desperate attempt to maintain some semblance of control.  He looked around and found the tail gunner dead and half hanging out of the plane and one of the waist gunners dead in his position.  The other waist gunner was wounded but managed to eject.  The ball turret gunner came up to escape the fire, but he had to go back and retrieve his parachute leaving Clem and the Engineer to fight the flames with the fire extinguishers.  That proved to be pointless as massive amounts of hydraulic fluid fed the flames.  In a moment that seemed to stretch into eternity, Clem's dire circumstances took a dramatic turn.  The co-pilot climbed over Clem and exited the plane through the upper hatch and bailed out.  Clem's theory was, “if the pilot or the co-pilot leaves, it's time for this boy to go.”  Later Clem learned that 13 of the 20 planes in his formation were shot down. The engulfing fire reached the wing tanks, triggering a catastrophic explosion that instantly transformed the night sky. The force of the blast was so intense that it rendered Technical Sgt. Leone unconscious and propelled him clear of the disintegrating aircraft, setting him on a terrifying free-fall towards the earth below. Plummeting from an altitude of perhaps 10,000 feet, Clem was unconscious, his body hurtling down at a speed that should have guaranteed a fatal outcome upon impact. However, fate had other plans for the feisty airman. In a miraculous twist of events, Clem regained consciousness mid-fall, his face covered in blood, yet his mind startlingly clear. With death staring him in the face, he managed to summon his wits, frantically searching for the orange metal ring on his chest that stood between life and certain death. With a decisive yank, Clem pulled the ring, deploying his parachute and transitioning from a deathly free-fall to a controlled descent. Despite his injuries, including fractured ribs sustained upon impact, Clem survived the ordeal, a testament to his incredible resilience and presence of mind in the face of overwhelming adversity. This harrowing experience not only showcased Clem's indomitable spirit but also marked the beginning of an extraordinary tale of survival against all odds.   Clem put on his parachute and climbed through the upper hatch.  At this point the plane was still flying 240 mph and Clem had to hold on to the two upper guns to keep from blowing off.  The plane was being consumed by flames and Clem was trying to decide how to exit the plane without getting caught in the spinning props or being thrown into the big double tail in the rear.  “While I was contemplating what to do apparently the ship exploded because I found myself at 14,000 feet without an airplane.”   Clem knew he was over enemy territory, and his mind was spinning on how to avoid capture.  His chute opened without a problem and he could see below that there was a pond and he was headed straight into it.  “Well wouldn't you know it, I got out of the plane safely and here I am going to land in this pond and drown because I can't swim.”  Luckily, he remembered his training on how to use his cords to direct his landing.  At about 8,000 feet he saw a crowd of civilians running toward him.  Now he remembered being told that German civilians would kill American pilots because they were told they were gangsters. Clem made sure to pull his legs up so he wouldn't break them and instead broke three ribs and hurt his back. With the crowd rapidly approaching, Clem pulled out his sidearm to try and defend himself.  He could hear them yelling, “Hollander, Hollander!”  He then realized he wasn't in Germany but rather occupied Netherlands.  Clem motioned them to come closer and tried to use his language card to speak Dutch but to no avail.  They brought Clem to a farmhouse and gave him a slice of bread with some jelly and a drink.  Clem didn't know what to expect so he gave the Dutch his firearm in case he was captured.  Better the Dutch to have it than the Nazi's.  Then came a knock at the door and it was a member of the German Home Guard; A Dutch citizen in a Nazi uniform who said, “you are my prisoner.  For you the war is over.”  Clem was led down a road by the Home Guard followed by the Dutch villagers.  Clem was directed to enter a civilian camp, but the Dutch were yelling, “no, other way!”  A 17 year old ran up to Clem and said “come” and he began running.  Without thinking Clem took off with him.  At the same time the Dutch villagers handled the guard.  “They beat the daylights out of him!” They ran into the woods and took Clem to a camouflaged underground bunker just big enough for a cot and a bucket for a latrine.  They told him to stay put and they would be back as soon as the Nazi's stopped looking for him.  A few days later they returned with a doctor.  The doctor taped his ribs and gave him some pain killers and the Dutch brought him some food.  Clem was told he would have to stay put until the villagers were able to hand him off to the Dutch underground.  He hid in the shelter for a week.  One day he heard a truck pull up and was sure the Nazi's had finally found him.  Instead, it was the Dutch underground and Clem's luck continued.  The underground took him to Amsterdam where a family hid him for a while.  They hid him in the attic and sometimes closets.  In the evenings they took him out for walks. They were trying to arrange to get Clem into France and then over the Pyrenees Mountains into Spain and from there to England. The underground thought they had found safe passage and they took Clem and began walking south until they eventually came to a train station, and they handed Clem off to a guide to take him the rest of the way.  At the train station a Nazi soldier asked him where the train was headed.  Clem was dressed in civilian clothes and had identification papers that identified him as a deaf and dumb accountant from Sumatra.  They chose Sumatra because of Clem's Mediterranean complexion and Sumatra was a Dutch possession.  They took the train to a farmhouse in southern Holland and then walked to the border of Belgium.  At the border they had to time the patrols of the Belgium border guards so they could slip across the border.  Once across the border there was a truck waiting for them that took them into Antwerp. Clem was taken to a home where he was hidden for a short time until the underground felt they had another contact that could take him into France.  After exchanging pleasantries, the contact started asking Clem about the name of his plane, when he was shot down and who had helped him.  Clem made up stories about why he couldn't remember and gave up no information.  At that point he was led to a building and was handed over to the Nazi's.  After four and a half months Clem was no longer free.  It was July of 1944 and he had no idea when the war would be over.  I asked Clem what went through his mind at that point.  He said, “I thought it was all over.”  Clem was put in a prison cell with another American that had been captured, Odell Hooper from Oklahoma.  They remained there for about a week until the Nazis had accumulated more Americans.  They were then put on a passenger train to an interrogation center. “All that time, all my mom had was the telegram she received telling her I was shot down,” Leone said. “She didn't know whether I was dead or alive.” At the interrogation center they were put into solitary for a week.  When Clem was brought before the Nazi interrogation officer he was asked for his name, rank, and serial number.  The Nazi, in a very friendly manner said, “Leone.  That's Italian.  Aren't you fighting for the wrong side?”  Clem gave then no information and was sent back to his cell.  Next, they were taken by train to Stalag Luft IV located in present day Tychowo, Poland just south of the Baltic Sea.  Clem remembered when they stepped off the train they saw a long line of German guards, all very young in age and holding German Shepherds.  The Americans were told to run into the POW camp while the guards allowed the dogs to nip at their heels.  When Clem's group made it inside the camp the resident POWs told them, “You were lucky.  They usually prod you with bayonets.” “The Americans already there said we were lucky,” Leone remembered. “The captain who would prick people with bayonets had just gone on leave.” In eight months, Leone had one shower. Had him and his comrades known about the Jewish concentration camps, he admitted they probably wouldn't have gotten even the one shower so as to avoid being gassed. The camp held mainly allied air crews and most of the guards were from the Luftwaffe.  There was a connection between the aircrews which made life a tiny bit more bearable.  Clem was led to his cell by an elderly Nazi soldier who told him, “this won't be pleasant but its bearable and you will be able to live through it and you will be able to get to go home.”  Clem was offered the opportunity to be placed in the officer's camp as an orderly, but he refused.  He wanted to be with the NCO's.   The POWs were warned not to cross the warning wire” that extended around the perimeter of the camp.  If they stepped across it, they would be shot without warning.  Beyond the warning wire there was a series of fences and barbed wire entanglements to make sure no one thought of escape.  Food did exist and red Cross parcels were delivered with some regularity and had some nutrition in them.  Meals consisted of raw potatoes and bread with sticks in it.  Once they were given a block of cheese infested with bugs.  To pass the time they walked around the perimeter of the camp, played baseball with make-shift bats and balls, and played football with a make-shift football. The guards inside the camp were elderly and unarmed.  The POWs called them ferrets because they were always trying to get information from the POWs to pass along to the camp commandant.  The guards in the towers and in the Commandant's barracks were armed.  “They were nasty, and they all spoke perfect English.”  Bartering in the camp with the guards was a big business.  Cigarettes and spam carried high currency.   One of the men bartered with a guard for parts to a radio which he built into a functional transistor radio which kept the POWs somewhat informed of the progress of the war.  They knew the Allies were winning and that helped with morale. In January of '45 the Allies were advancing into Nazi Territory.  The men at the camp could hear artillery in the distance.  They thought Liberation could be not far away.  The Nazi's decided to evacuate the camp to avoid the Russian troops advancing from the east.  They decided to march the camp west.  The sick and wounded were transported by train.  On February 6, 1945, the remaining men began what would become known as the German Death March.   The men were assembled in columns of 4 or 5 across and were forced to march between 5 and 20 miles each day.  The men had inadequate clothing to provide them protection from one of Germany's harshest winters on record.  Snow and sub-zero temperatures resulted in frost bite and the complete lack of sanitation, food or drink resulted in extreme weight loss, lice, dysentery and in some cases death.  Men who could not keep up were escorted by a Nazi soldier into the woods and executed.  Sometimes the men were able to sleep in barns but often they slept in open fields exposed to the elements.  The march took the POWs through numerous German towns where they were distained by the German citizens who had endured prolonged and devastating Allied bombing.  They threw eggs and tomatoes and tried to assault the POWs.   They stole eggs for food. At one point, they collected all their cigarettes to trade with a farmer for a pig to roast. They dodged friendly fire from U.S. airplanes that had no way of knowing they were American prisoners. “Survival,” Leone said when asked what was going through his mind during the more than a year he spent in Europe. “How's this gonna end? What are they finally gonna do? Any time you don't have your freedom, I think you'd feel that way. The worst part of it as far as not having your freedom was that week in solitary.” Clem believes the march ended on May 6th, 1945.  That day they woke up and found that the guards had disappeared.   The POWs wondered what had happened.  A short while later they heard engines and soon a British Lorry appeared carrying British soldiers.    The number of men thought to have started the march was 6,000+.  The total time estimated for the march was 86 days.  It is believed the men covered 600+ miles as the Nazi's continually changed direction to avoid the advancing Soviet troops.  It is thought that 1,300+ men perished in the harsh winter conditions.  No official records were kept making it hard to get precise numbers.  Despite the lack of records this forced march is often compared to the Bataan Death March. The British took the POWs clothes and burned them.  They deloused the men and gave them plenty of time to take a nice hot shower.  Initially they were issued small portions of rations until their digestive systems became accustomed to food again.  Clem boarded the ship, The Jonathan Worth for a 13 day voyage home.  When they entered New York Harbor they were greeted with pleasure boats “with gals in bikini's and some of them had records playing don't fence me in.”  I asked Clem if he remembered seeing the Statute of Liberty.  “Oh Yes.  That was a wonderful site!”  Next, they were taken to Fort Dix and were given a big steak dinner.  They were permitted one phone call and Clem called his uncle to come pick him up.   Clem arrived back in Baltimore and had a 60 day recuperation furlough.  He looked up his high school sweetheart who had waited for him to return and they decided to get married and move to Miami where Clem was scheduled to report back for duty.  They were married and before they left on their honeymoon Clem received a letter to be ready to deploy to the Pacific.  Fortunately, when he returned from his honeymoon the war was over.   Clem went about building his life with a keen sense for making money and advancing.  He worked as an auto mechanic, then networked his way into a Pontiac dealership in the service area, became shop foreman and then went into sales and various other roles in the car business.  In a chance meeting someone asked him if he had ever considered teaching auto mechanics.  He had not but decided to give it a try because it had a pension.  Clem ended up teaching high school auto mechanics for 22 years and was beloved by his students.  He also stayed in the Army and Air Force Reserves for 33 years reaching the rank of Major.  “In my opinion, there are no real heroes in a war,” Leone said from his Mount Joy home in the Lake Heritage development. “There's nothing glorious about war. It's mayhem.” Clem Leone passed away at the age of 98 on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.  CLem received France's highest award, the Legion of Honor, at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., and also received the Purple Heart, the POW Award and the Dutch equivalent to the French Legion of Honor. Introduction Why are we looking at Rahab as part of this 'a new thing' series? She is the first non-Isrealite in the genealogy of Jesus: “and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,” (Matthew 1:5 NRSV) It doesn't get much better than that! There are several 'unlikely' people in that list. There are several reasons she should not be in that list, but they are the same reason she is in the list. First, a review of what happens in Joshua 2 & 6 Joshua 2.1-24 Joshua 6.17 Joshua 6.22-25 1. She is a Gentile God's desire has always been for everyone to know him “I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”” (Genesis 12:3 NRSV) “And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant—these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” (Isaiah 56:6-7 NRSV) Jesus saw this as pertaining to his own day “and he said, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer'; but you have made it a den of robbers.”” (Luke 19:46 NRSV) Paul recognised the significance of the arrival of the Messiah “Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles shall hope.”” (Romans 15:12 NRSV) Rahab prefigures the hope that all modern-day Gentiles have that, by faith, we are included in the people of God. 2. She is a woman Rahab as protector - In the Old Testament men are protectors; so are women. [[Abigail]] protects her husband and the men in her household from a violent death (1 Sam. 25). [[Rahab]] protects the male spies (Josh. 2). [[Esther]] protects her people, the Jews, from being massacred (Esth. 2:19 – 9:19). - She is one of two heroines in a window heading off danger: Rahab and Michal, societal opposites. “Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the outer side of the city wall and she resided within the wall itself.” (Joshua 2:15 NRSV) “So Michal let David down through the window; he fled away and escaped.” (1 Samuel 19:12 NRSV) Rahab as a woman of dignity 'We think of the courageous life of [[Sarah]] (Gen. 12–23), the faith of [[Rahab]] (Josh. 2), the commitment of [[Hannah]] (1 Sam. 1–2), the devotion of [[Ruth]] (Ruth 1–4), [[Abigail]]'s gentle but firm rebuke of David (1 Sam. 25), the humble faith of both the widow of Zarephath (1 Kgs. 17) and the Shunammite woman (2 Kgs. 4), and the risk-taking faith of [[Esther]] (Esth. 1–10).' Blomberg, Craig . Two Views on Women in Ministry (Counterpoints: Bible and Theology) (p. 272). Zondervan Academic. Jesus treats women with dignity - “She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying.” (Luke 10:39 NRSV) - Rahab prefigures the promise of the Spirit that all are equal before God (Acts 2:17-18 NRSV) 3. She has a questionable profession Rahab as host - Hosts the undesirable? - Hosts spies, people of God, beachhead of kingdom, 'temple' - Place of faith and salvation - Like Jesus in reverse - hosting those who make her life more complicated (Mark 2:15-17 NRSV) Conclusion What does Rahab learn? God cares about the Gentiles (those far from God) God keeps his promises (salvation) God is powerful (more so than any earthly power) God is full of grace (no matter what others think of her, or she thinks of herself) What do we learn? The importance of honouring the marginalised - if God does it, and Jesus, so should we. He wants them in his family. Not to look down on 'sinners', but to seek to show them the love of God. No human barrier can stop anyone from becoming a God-follower. To have vision for those (apparently) furthest from God New Thing point Her decision to have faith in God took her and her family on a new counter-cultural journey into uncharted territory. 'It must have been an interesting period for Rahab's extended family, all squashed into her house, like a mini-ark, on the edge of a terrorised city, waiting for the unknown.'  This is Bloomberg Business Wait inside from the reporters and editors who bring you America's most trusted business magazine, plus gloom O Business Finance and tech news the Bloomberg Business Week Podcast with Carol Messer and Tim Stenebek from Bloomberg Radio. Just all right, folks, were staying with the markets, and actually really two particular names, because as we just talked about, we've got stocks near their lows, some nervousness, the S and P ten percent down from its peak in July. But if you look at something like an Amazon, which makes up about five and a half percent of the Nasdaq one hundred, nearly three point four percent of the S and P five hundred earlier, helping send stocks hire in the session, you've got Amazon really rallying in a big way and holding on to tim most of its gains today yep, seven percent as we speak, help sending stocks overall higher at least earlier. In this from Carol, although the broader market has slipped since then. Intel is also higher on the day today. The company in the midst of attempted to turn around, in which the CEO Pat Gelsinger commented on saying the chipmaker is quote clearly coming back. We're gonna spend this time right now taking a look at both of these two very closely washed companies in the tech world. Let's start with Amazon. Let's do that and with us right now is Punam Goyle. She is Bloomberg Intelligence Senior analyst for e commerce at Leisure, off Price Retail on Zoom from New Jersey. Punham, I'm so glad we have you here. As we always do when we want to talk to Amazon, you focus on the retail side of this company, but to be fair, you look at it holistically. What was the impressive or what impressed you about the earnings and the color on the business when it comes to Amazon. Yes, thanks Carol. So there were really two things. You know, Amazon has two really big businesses. One is the cloud business and one is the retail business. And let's start with the retail business. I think the retail business it particularly well built. On the one PE and three P side. Sales are much stronger than expect did and that's a really good sign going into holidays, because we know that the consumers are clearly stretched for their dollars, but they're finding value in Amazon. Amazon's able to push this value again to them through crime days and deal days that they'll have I think throughout the Christmas season with Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc. So we think that's good going into holiday. And then on the AWUS side, the fact that they were more optimistic than their peers on the cloud business thing strength with stabilization was really encouraging to hear on the call, and we are very positive on the cloud business longer term. The margins there thirty percent plus were obviously nice to see too, and we do think that cloud business in the longer term with scale will be over forty percent. So put them Why did sales for AWS just missed expectations? And I was a little confused by this move yesterday I said it on air. I thought AWS was kind of everything, and that's you know what either it beat or missed was what moved the company's stock. Why are you optimistic and why are investors still pushing shares higher even if there was that miss on APUs? I mean, I guess it depends on how you look at this, right, So twelve percent versus the twelve point four percent estimate, in my eyes, isn't really a bigness it was in line with what they did last quarter, meaning the second quarter. So the twelve percent gains relative to what we heard at both Google and Microsoft wasn't that bad. And I think really the icing on the cake here is on the call when Andy Jazzy came on and he spoke about how that they're seeing stabilization from those trends even into the fourth quarter. I think that was just really encouraging. We all know that spending will pick up in a matter of time. Businesses have to move towards integrating more cloud into their network as well as they need to spend more on AI. So Amazon is very well positioned for AWS growth in the longer turn. And the fact that they are stabilizing was good news to us and I think that's how the market received it too. Can you make the Amazon Ai connection here? I think a lot of people might not be familiar with why you know boush and AI will help AWS. Yeah, so boost and AI helps not only a WS, but it also helps the retail text business. So when you think about what AI does, it basically helps build the models and interpret data and models for businesses. So the fact that AWI can lean on new AI technologies and embed that into its infrastructure. It's going to help companies use that and leverage that in their own businesses. The retails side, oh keep going, no, no, no, keep going, keep going. On the retail side, you know, AI has been doing phenomenal things, especially generative AI, where it's helping you predict demand, it's helping you streamline inventory, and it's helping you personalize, which is describing conversion higher and industry that typically, especially online, it's very low conversion rates. So does it make sense that I always think about, you know, when we first learned about AWS and they start breaking it out right because of all the streaming that was going on, and you're like, I don't really care who supplies the content. We're just making sure we have the pipe to get it to you basically, right, And that's what AWS was just so involved in the early days. Is that kind of akin to with AI that people are going to need the infrastructure, the backbone, and are they going to be involved in that part. So it's software, right, So AI basically it's software that's powered through AWUS and that they're integrating and embedding into the cloud platform. So as businesses need to become more agile and move on to the cloud. AI can only be done on the cloud, so you need that, you need that support. And for businesses that don't have it, which money don't, they will need to either tap into Amazon, Awus or Google or Microsoft in one of them. But keep in mind Amazon is the largest cloud rider of the thirty. All right, good stuff, as always, so appreciated, Have a great week and put them Goil Bloomberg Intelligence, Senior analyst for e Commerce at leisure and off price Retail on zoom from New Jersey. You're listening to the Bloomberg Business Week podcast. Catch us live weekday afternoons from three to six Eastern Listen on Bloomberg dot com, the iHeartRadio app, and the Bloomberg Business App, or watch us live on YouTube. Well going on in the world of crypto this week Sam Bakman freed testifying at his own fraud trial. He says a lot of people got hurt over FTX, so that he's not entirely sure about the FTX. Alameda Fund flows. Alameda, of course, is the hedge fund, and then there's also the actual crypto market. Carol Bitcoin enjoying a solid week up roughly twelve percent, and you know you got you got to kind of throw that number out there with six two thousand one. Oops, that was Yeah, that was the past. You gotta throw that number out there with the understanding that it trades twenty four to seven. So if you say that number and you know you gotta, you ought to always be looking at it. It's all happening amid hopes of fresh demand from the possible approval in coming weeks of the first US ETF investing directly in bitcoin. Gotta tell you, we got a live blog that's tracking the testimony and what's going on in the courthouse today. Let's get to it though. We've got our weekly check on the world of crypto. We have with us Terrence Yang, managing director of Fintech, Law, Tech Privacy at Swan Bitcoin. It's a platform that allows people to buy bitcoin, including in iras, and he is joining us on Zoom from Los Angeles, California. Terran's nice to have you here with us. I feel like the world of crypto is focused and maybe rightfully so, on what's going on with SBF and FTX. What about the trial and the testimony are you watching very closely? And maybe what it means potentially for the crypto world going forward. I am watching closely. Great to see again, Carol. Bottom line, I think a couple of things. Defense finally present their case. When they do the cross examinations right, it's usually to create doubt about the credibility of the prosecution witnesses. It is not to present their case. And now they're doing that. I think Sam got very lucky and the defense countcil got very lucky to have sort of this mock trial profit yesterday with a judge, and now Sam seems to be doing a better job. He has a tendency to me under, but he's getting the point across. Do you know him, Terrence, You're you're kind of you're talking to You're using his first name and whereas a lot of people you know use his initials. Do you know Sam Bankman freed? No? No, I do not. But how are you following the trial? I follow through X They have a lot of goods, good information, but also at Bloomberg dot com and some other sites. I agree about Bloomberg dot com. There's some great stuff there. Our lifelog is really really good. Now I'm just curious because it's you know, we we're not getting We have to rely on you know, reporting from there, whereas in so many other instances we can actually watch live feeds from what's going on in the courtroom, and you know, we rely on court sketches and impressions Carol from our reporters who are there. So it's you know, it's a different experience I think for people who are observing you don't you know, you don't necessarily see the way he's feeling, at least according to our own interpretations. So talk more about about what you're seeing and what you're reading from the trial. Terrence. Yeah, sure, So based on what I'm reading and seeing, the defense is presenting a case since presenting the case that Caroline is basically the one to plane did not hedge he had doubts about her abilities right, and its thinking of shutting down Alameda and other things. So you just need really one juror to get a hung jury. One jur who thinks there's reasonable doubt does not cave. So someone who's a little bit strong minded, because it would be eleven to one. But that can happen, and then on retrial, what might happen with the black rock and fidelity ATF's happening. Arguably, we're in a bull market FTX with John Ray, who's excellent in my opinion, at this sort of thing, clawing back assets, maybe doing a turnaround and so forth. You could have a situation where maybe people don't care as much because, for example, the investment anthropic and other things mean that everybody gets paid, or at least the FTX investors get paid whole kind of cents on the dollar that's possible by the time they retry, and so that might be how he gets off. See it as kind of a two step process, just because there's so much evidence against him. Terrence. What's productive though for the crypto industry here in terms of the outcome of this trial specifically, so I part ways with my crypto friends, some of them are friends with in real life even today, but I am bitcoin only and I think that there needs to be and there will be massive cleanup in crypto. You see that with Senator Lummis and others kind of asking the government to the DOJ to the side kind of get off the block or not and just issue indictments or make a decision on CZ and finance. But also tether I think Tether's okay, but I don't want to get into that. I think the main point is we have massive tailwinds for bitcoin because of Blackrock, Fidelity and two other trillion dollar plus asset managers all applying for a spotpitcoin ETF and that looks like it's going well. On the other hand, you have crypto which has destroyed many Americans, especially poor and middle class, of their life savings through these pump and dumps, these digital penny stops, that these casinos are basically underregulated, casinos are basically shilling on the American public, and that does not looks so good. I think that's less promising because of all the securities violations and allegedly crimes against committed by SBF potentially as cz in Binance will see a fee. Actually, are you worried about the implications of people changing the way they're thinking about crypto because of SBF and other people who are in the crosshairs of law enforcement Terance that people are saying, Okay, I'm just gonna throw in the towel, because well, look look at the performance and two sure and two look at the people who we thought were reputable. I mean, they named stadiums and had Super Bowl ads. I am not. The reason is because I'm a long term believer in bitcoin. I think five to ten decades out bitcoin should be very valuable. There are other threats to it, with Finsen and other things that the government's doing that's not good. It's under reported for now. I'm sure Bloomberg will fix that and others. But bottom line, I'm not worried because look, there's been a mess, was a massive bubble in twenty twenty one and crypto and bitcoin and the fallout from the bear market and the destruction, and there needs to be a cleanup. I think it's really naive to think that, you know, this is bad for bitcoin, because bitcoin has enduring values and it doesn't have a CEO. It's not a security Hey, terms, forgive me for jumping in. We've just got a couple of minutes left here. But I'm thinking, you know, there might be people listening or watching are broadcast right now listening to you and say, yeah, I get it that there needs to be a cleaning out. That makes sense, right. We certainly saw that in the Internet, you know, in dot com bust, right, there were some things that really made sense and there are a lot of things that didn't. Having said that, you know, you're at SWAN Bitcoin and you're of course going to say bitcoin is the one to follow, and that has legs here. So what would you say to somebody like that that you're basically forgive me, for lack of better words, talking your book. No, no, I am talking my book. I think you do want people to talk their book and reveal it and explain it. I used to be in crypto. I was retired when Corey Klipston, our wonderful founder and CEO, pulled me like made a job offer to come out of retirement. So a lot of time, you're two younger. I was paid on Wall Street. I'm older than I look, and I was overpaid on Wall Street. And I was living frugally taking care of my aging parents. But anyway, so bottom line, I would say at SWON, we have people on a mission to help other people get bitcoin before Wall Street and government supply on the bitcoin. If we're right, and I think we are, that this is the ultimate hard money asset for the future because it's digital, it's bare, it's very hard to stop, very hard to confiscate and take away and incredibly finite at only twenty one million bitcoin. So in my view, it's okay to be have a view, but you have to reveal why and you have to justify it, like defend your position right. Transparency is going to be crucial. But I still try to get my head around this idea of the purity of what bitcoin and maybe blockchain are supposed to be. You know, but then are you opening up doors to a lack of oversight and then problems? So then how do you balance that with some kind of oversight that really makes it safe and secure. But that's going to be something we have to hold for next time and a future conversation because we do have to run. Terrence, thanks for spending time with us. Terrence yang Maaging director a fintech law tech at Privacy over at Swan Bitcoin, as we said, a platform that allows people to buy bitcoin, including their iras, which would really open it up to a lot of people. You're listening to the Bloomberg Business Week podcast. Catch us live weekday afternoons from three to six Eastern on Bloomberg Radio, the Bloomberg Business app, and YouTube. You can also listen live on Amazon Alexa from our flagship New York station. Just say Alexa playing Bloomberg eleven thirty. All right, it's hard to believe that a year has passed since Elon Musk bought Twitter. It seems like three years to be honest. Anyway, since then, he has made the social media service smaller in almost every way. About thirteen percent fewer users signed on each day in September compared with the last October. That's according to some data from aptopia. Yeah, also, Carol, I don't like it anymore? Can I just put it out there? Yeah, that's fair. I think that's fair to say. The company employs about fifteen hundred people yep, down from seventy five hundred days that Musk bought it. And this is probably perhaps most relevant in my life. I was relatively early on Twitter, and it was like such a place for journalists, such a place for media professionals, news junkies. And Elon has totally deprioritized news. It's like a place for I don't know what, the hustlers and I don't know. And then there's the name. Yeah it's called X now I guess yeah, I'm not going there, so let's get to it. Yeah, I should count as a social media reporter for Bloomberg News. He writes for Business Week about it. Elon Musk's year of owning X made a mess of Twitter's business. She joins us on Zoom from San Francisco. Check out her story. It's online at Blomberg dot com, slash business Week and also on the Bloomberg terminal. Also here is the editor of Bloomberg Business Week, Joel Webber. He's in our Bloomberg Interactive Broker studio. Joel. This was the longest year. That's definitely one way to describe it. So, yeah, this week, it's been one year since it became official and Elon walked into the place with the sink memorable way to begin. I remember that, Yeah, we didn't we didn't forget, and you know, look like this has been something It's been something right and there were many things about the Twitter business that weren't successful. But what we're looking at now is kind of a shell of itself. That doesn't mean that it won't change yet and that maybe he's cut so far to bone that there's a growth opportunity that remains, but that is you know, this has been a different experience than I think most people when they look at what Elon has built. You know that he builds things, and it doesn't feel like it's necessarily off to that start here I issue right, Yeah, as you mentioned, it's just a very different place. It's a very different feeling. I feel like the types of content that are promoted or at least that I see in my feet are different than they were, you know, a year ago. Right, Like there's more information. I feel like there's more hate, Like I get a lot more spam in my dms, and like people commenting hateful stuff on stories or posts that I put. So it's totally totally different. It's a totally different feel, which is kind of sad in a lot of ways. And then I honestly could never get used to calling it X. I feel like I still call it. I hate it. I can't or I'm like you really feel careful. It's just like because every time we do it like X, well you know we mean Twitter, Like it's just crazy. But I do you think like if you're if you're Elon and you've and you bought this thing and you want to change the conversation, not unlike you know, his cage mask match Nemesis over at that place Facebook or meta changed. Change the conversation. And one way that you can do that is to take the name. And you know, we still call Google Google, but you know, technically it's alphabet and like look again and again and again. There's a playbook for this, and you change the conversation. But you know, X is not Twitter, and you know we I think it's reflected, but I what I search for it on my phone. I can serve Twitter and it pops up still, right, Wow, that's maybe because I downloaded it recently. Yeah, yeah, because I try to always give it up a little bit. I'm just sorry you were you were going to jump in there, go ahead, please, I'm just going to say the same thing. Even on the web, right, you look up Twitter and it pops up, and even some of the links that they post to like their policies, it still says like Twitter dot com, slash whatever. So I feel like they're still sort of I mean that the name brand right of Twitter is just so strong and so powerful. Well, maybe there's a chance that it comes back still, so what is you look like the numbers there were staggering in terms of the number of employees. It's kind of cuts, right, yeah, and look like you remember the ones that remain, those fifteen hundred. I'm assuming they clicked that button that was like we promised to be hardcore, you know, like that whole incident. But but what do you what do we think? Are you sure? Like what does it look like when he gets on the other side of this? I mean that that is the big question, right. It could go a couple different ways. I mean, one the amount of debt right that that Twitter had when when must bought it, Like, well he actually he was a cause of a lot of that debt. He was like, Twitter's going to go into bankruptcyes, Well, yeah, you acquire the company and then put thirteen billion dollars of debt on the balance sheet. So part of that's kind of on you. So they have a big financial holding out of advertising revenue is down by sixty percent, like that was in September. A lot of big advertisers aren't back or they're spinning way less, and so they have this huge hole to climb out of. I think the chance they have now is if they can really take off with this whole everything app idea right now, some people have said, I don't know if I'm gonna trust X with my payment information, Like it's a very unstable place to maybe want to like do my banking. But there's their sort of vision is to like do banking and do audio and video calling and all these other things, and so I guess they have a chance to make money with that. It's really just people to play. I should your point. I'm getting like spam in my feed about bitcoin and buying different cryptos. Like, I don't know how someone would want to do banking on an app that doesn't have that type of control a jol you don't want to get into crypto. It's an amazing opportunity. So that's a documentary call me back. It's called Ruin. That's the problem. The documentary is called Ruin. But you know, look like there if you bought this thing and you've changed the name and you're changing the story, there's this other opportunity that you have to you know, the only option here for him is to try and take it to a different place. I think, right, So he's going to try and do that, and you know we will be back in a year, no doubt, probably before to talk about how it's going. But I usually when you just think about I mean even just this week some of the other things that have come out, like do you what does he have to do? You know, everything at beside? What does he have to do to make this thing work? And when we meet again, how are we going to be talking about it? I mean, he has to get people to pay for it, Like so they have the subscription service now and it's less than one percent of people that Lava on a monthly basis or using it. So somehow you have to get people to pay. And people don't like to pay for social media. I don't like to pay for social media. I don't know other people do. So that's gonna be the biggest thing. And then you exactly, and then you have to make it work. So cool all these features are being launched, but like you think about some of his live streaming stuff, like he did this big event with Ronda Santis and it was glitchy the whole time. So you have to have things actually work otherwise people are not going to want to know, like he's sending rockets up out of the air or anything and has figured that one out. Yeah, just saying electric cars thing, Joel, I've said it once, I'll say it again, I would pay a monthly fee to not be allowed on on X. Well, you know that would help you can you can x that at and see what he says. I kind of miss it because it was a really great thing when news was happening, like it was incredib right. That to me is a huge part of this is like a reminder of like when there was a moment that you could get news and it was easy to access and like that. This is not that moment. It's killer. It's where everybody went. It was just happening in front of you. Joe Webber, of course, the editor of Bloomberg business Week, Thank you so much. Asha co On, social media reporter for Bloomberg News. Find this at Bloomberg dot com, Slash BusinessWeek and of course always on the Bloomberg terminal. Elon um brother Marco a journal. How about you let me drive? Oh no, no, no no, no, please going to drive, honey, please, I'll do the riding gravels. Let's wait. I want to try. It's a good question. Good try. This is the drive to the clothes dot com. I think we'll buy your should it on Bloomberg Radio right just about seventeen and a half minutes left in today's trading session, getting ready to wrap up the day. The week, it's been a little crazy. What a week. Good that the S and P five hundred down almost three percent this week. Same at the NASDAK composite. Yeah, that's some sa right, Yeah, Yeah, it's kind of interesting in a week where we got certainly some strong economic news, some earnings that were mixed bag. Yeah, some earnings that were mixed bag. Hot inflation, consumers still spending. Yeah, Taylor still a billionaire, she is, She's going to be fine. I'm not worried about Taylor. All right. Let's see, though, how investors can maybe be kind of fine when it comes to their investments. Let's get to Eric Clark. He's portfolio manager at Rational Dynamic Brands Fund on Zoom and San Diego. By the way, the Rational Dynamic Brands Fund is up this year by nearly sixteen percent, so out forming about ninety six percent of its peers. According to our own Bloomberg data. On a five year basis, though, it's in the twenty first percentile, with a return of about eight point four percent on average annually. Hey, Eric, nice to have you back with us this year, though, turning out to be pretty good for you guys. You guys focus on a bunch of names. I always I think Tim and I always like to ask you, though, big macro, how is it determining those names that you want to focus on? Well? How are you guys? Nice to talk again? I mean, there's a lot of macro cross currents, isn't there. I mean, between geopolitics and interest rates and the worry about a recession and a consumer that might be tapped out, which I don't agree with. You know, there's a lot to consider, and so when there's a lot to consider, it means volatility is probably going to be higher than normal, and that gives you some opportunities to trade around your core positions. And we're being a little more concentrated in what we own. We're being very laser focused rather than being a little more broad based. And that's helped this year certainly with some good exposure to the you know, the megacap let's call them the Magnificent seven that since that I don't know who coined that phrase, but you know that's the one that we're all running with. But seventy five percent of the fund is non magnificent seven, and some of those names are having a great year too, even though the overall market has been a little sluggish in the average stock is actually flatted down on the year, So it's been a very interesting year indeed. Well, you guys, in addition to Apple and Amazon, you also have kkur Live Nation, Draft Kings, you also have Microsoft, and they're speaking to Magnificent seven. But I want to go back to something you said, Eric, that you don't agree that the consumer is tapped out. What evidence do you have to show that make the case for us, for our listeners, for of yours. Yeah, sure, I mean listen, for two years, we've all been over paying for everything, right. First we started to do it and we just did it without caring, and then we started to get mad, but we still did it, and for most cases we're still doing it. But we're finally making choices and we're doing a lot of trade downs, which is why we love Amazon and a few other en Costco and a few others. But you know, the consumer, I don't think. I think some part of the consumer retail is certainly tapped out, because if you're on a fixed budget and everything that you have to buy is going up in price, then of course your discretionary spend what's left over isn't as robust, and so you really start making choices and you and you tighten your belt. But for the most part, there's also seven trillion in money markets that nobody talks about. And our savings, yes, have been dwindling, but that that formula is just doesn't take into consideration. You know your household, Well, aren't the people who have the seven trillion dollars in money markets? People at the highest end of the income spectrum anyway, Well, I think generally speaking, but that you know, I mean, I people in my own family and friends have just said, you know, I'm getting I'm getting zero or less, you know, not much in my savings account at Chase. So I'm going to move that money over to my Schwab brokerage, and I'm going to put in the money market. You know that that how long that sits is anybody's guest, But sentiment is certainly poor. I'm just saying that, you know, as long as people have jobs, then then even if we moan and groan about things, you know, listen to what we do, not as much as what we say. Because the retail sales numbers have been super strong, right, and yet the narrative is that the consumers tapped out and very and very you know, kind of dire. Eric want to ask you. It's something we just talked about with our colleagues over on the TV side on air, and we talked about a call by b of A on their way to play this market, and they say, buy boomers, sell millennials, And basically they're saying, you know, boomers are flushed with high interest rates fattening their savings accounts. Young Americans are struggling with debt, sky high rents and mortgage rates that are putting home ownership for their out of reach. So you forgot childcare? Is that too? So go look it, Tucks and then avoid those whose fortunes ride on cash strap millennials. So American Express and cruise ship lines are in out of something like Revolve Group, which is a self styled next gen fashion retailer. So any of that play into what you are owning in your fund Well, sure, certainly demographics play a big role. I mean, you know, the goal is if you are a brand that is operating in an important spending category and you appeal to kids, all the way up to older adults, and you have global sales opportunities through with that demographic. That makes a very interesting setup. But we're certainly focused on the parts of spending where you either have to spend like going to Costco or spending using your visa card and spending on Amazon, or you really want to spend because you've made a choice that this particular product or service is really important. So concerts through Live Nation they report next week. I think the stock has come down way too far for the stable business that they have. Spotify wouldn't necessarily ring for a baby boomer, but it does. I'm a gen X millennials and gen Z are fiercely loyal to a Spotify and they just turned profitable and they said they're going to stay that way. So we're definitely focused on the demographics of what we have to spend on and what we just absolutely love to spend on. And we do have some Lily Lily's the only healthcare name that we have in there, and that's certainly is part of the obesity. The trade, which you know is kind of a democrat to they have their own GLP one Indiana. What about Nike down sixteen point three percent this year. Concerns over China, concerns over the consumer. Are those concerns not in the right place? Well, No, I think Shana is a concern in general. I think Nike's one of the biggest holdings now because it came down. So we like to add to great businesses when they're on sale. And their latest quarter was really strong. You saw Deckers today with Hoka. Don't bet against Hoka right now. There you go. The athleisure trade, I think is lu Lu's had a very strong number in their latest report and still has great growth in Asia coming. So I think there's a lot of places to be where the spending category and the brand love is really is really important, and we're ignoring the for now. I know we're running out of time, but from the notes that you shared with our producer Paul Brennan, you're excited to add on further. DIP's, Apple, Google, Meta, Blackstone and KKR Tencent also a favorite. So interesting. Hey, we'll have to get you back real soon. Eric Clark, have a good weekend, portfolio manager at Rational Dynamic Brands Fund on Steam in San Diego. Yeah, Little Alman Brothers, this is the Bloomberg Business Week podcast, all available on Apple, Spotify, and anywhere else you get your podcast. Listen live weekday afternoons from three to six Eastern on Bloomberg dot Com, the iHeartRadio app, tune In, and the Bloomberg Business App. You can also watch us live every weekday on YouTube and always on the Bloomberg journyaloneSee The Designated Hitter rule was adopted by the American League in 1973. Nearly fifty years later, and with much debate that has started to quieten down, the National League followed. In that time leagues at every level around the world introduced the pitcher's replacement bat. Somebody had to be first though. And the first was the New York Yankees' Ron "Boomer" Blomberg. It was April 6th, 1973, the wind blowing out to right field, and Blomberg faces Luis Tiant… five pitches later, Boomer walks to first base. All designated, no hits, but on base. That'll do nicely. We don't have the actual game where Blomberg was the first DH, but we do have a game a few months later. The Yankees are visiting Memorial Stadium to take on the Baltimore Orioles. Boomer is fifth in the order, with the still-unusual DH letters beside his name. Behind the microphone is the platoon of Frank Messer, Bill White, and Phil Ruzzuto. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BAL/BAL197306280.shtml This game was played on June 28th, 1973. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message

Have you heard of the quests for the historical Jesus? This has been going on for two and a half centuries. It has produced a massive amount of literature and occupied the minds of some of the most impressive biblical scholars over the years. What's all this about? Why do we need to search for the historical Jesus? Isn't he right there in the Gospels that we find in the New Testament? My guest today is Craig Blomberg whose new book, Jesus the Purifier lays out a thorough yet accessible survey of the four quests for the historical Jesus. He also explains why bible-believing Christians should care about critical scholarship. Lastly, he describes how his own work on the Gospel of John has revealed some exciting insights that challenge the Church today. In this engaging conversation between Josh and Dr. Craig L. Blomberg, a wide array of topics related to the historical Jesus, faith, objectivity, and the nature of the Gospels are explored. The discussion begins with an examination of the empirical evidence for historical events, including the supernatural, and the importance of acknowledging history that might not be empirically demonstrated.Josh and Dr. Blomberg delve into the nature of human agency, the ability to invent and do unpredictable things, and the representation of truth in literature. They also discuss the Gospels, their structure, and how they differ from other historical or biographical works. The conversation shifts to the challenges of faith and the importance of remaining open to new evidence. Dr. Blomberg emphasizes the need for a balance between faith and objectivity, and the willingness to change one's views if overwhelming evidence is presented. The interview concludes with Dr. Blomberg's conviction about the significance of the decision one makes about Jesus of Nazareth, and how it affects both this life and eternity. He encourages both believers and non-believers to reflect on their response to Jesus and to investigate the claims about Him.#HistoricalJesus #FaithAndObjectivity #Gospels #Christianity #ReligiousStudies #CraigLBlomberg #EmpiricalEvidence #Supernatural #Inerrancy #SpiritualLifeSupport the showTo learn more about the show, contact our hosts, or recommend future guests, click on the links below: Website: https://www.faithfulpoliticspodcast.com/ Faithful Host: Josh@faithfulpoliticspodcast.com Political Host: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.com Twitter: @FaithfulPolitik Instagram: faithful_politics Facebook: FaithfulPoliticsPodcast LinkedIn: faithfulpolitics

On this week's show Ping is all by herself, but to make up for the absence of Doreen and Sarah, she is joined by renowned artistic agent Kajsa Blomberg. In a wide ranging interview, Kajsa talks about her journey from being a law graduate to a highly established agent and shares valuable tips and insights for artists that are seeking representation and what they can expect once they have it.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Kajsa graduated from law school, specialising in intellectual property law. After working for Universal music she found herself drawn to working with artists. From there she took the leap to becoming an agent.   Ping and Kajsa discuss the importance of working to your strengths and, in a relationship between an agent and a client, how each must have an understating of the other's role.  Kasja talks about her process of selecting the artists she wants to represent, and gives details of her ‘emotional checklist.' Kasja shares her top tips for artists that are looking for representation, including, surprisingly, asking yourself if you really need an agent.  BEST MOMENTS“The artist can only see the product, the agent helps them see the opportunities.”“Having an agent isn't a golden ticket to making money, you still have to be an ambassador of your own work.”“The most important question for an artist to ask themselves is ‘What do I want?', the answer to this question will help guide all your decisions.” ABOUT THE PODCASTA serious and fun podcast for female creatives hosted by Ping, Dorien and Sarah, three happy artists from Amsterdam. The third quest for the historical Jesus has reached an impasse. But a fourth quest is underway--one that draws from a heretofore largely neglected source: John's Gospel. In Jesus the Purifier: John's Gospel and the Fourth Quest for the Historical Jesus (Baker Academic, 2023), renowned New Testament scholar Craig Blomberg advances the idea that John is a viable and valuable source for studying the historical Jesus. The data from John should be integrated with that of the Synoptics, which will yield additional insights into Jesus's emphases and ministry. Blomberg begins by reviewing the first three quests, reassessing both their contributions and their shortcomings. He then discusses the emerging consensus regarding demonstrably historical portions of John, which are more numerous than usually assumed. Peeling back the layers, we discover in Jesus's ministry an emphasis on purity and purification. The Synoptics corroborate this discovery, specifically in Jesus's meals with sinners. Blomberg then explores the practical and contemporary applications of Jesus the purifier, including the "contagious holiness" that Jesus's followers can spread to others. Craig Blomberg is distinguished professor emeritus of New Testament at Denver Seminary in Littleton, Colorado, where he has taught for more than thirty years. Jackson Reinhardt is a graduate of University of Southern California and Vanderbilt University. He is currently an independent scholar, freelance writer, and research assistant. Dr. Craig Blomberg, Ph.D., is the author of numerous books, one of the earliest of which is his monumental The Historical Reliability of the Gospels (IVP, 1987). Dr. Blomberg shares with us how he developed the goal to become a serious biblical scholar who would do quality work at the very top of the discipline, and help students and other scholars sort through the issues of history in the Bible. Craig wrote the first chapter of this book, Jesus Under Fire (eds. Wilkins and Moreland) which was also mentioned. Dr. Blomberg taught for 37 years at Denver Seminary and joins us from his "retirement," which is as he says, retirement in name only (RINO). I myself took 5 graduate courses from him and he was my thesis advisor for my first Masters degree (which was in Biblical Studies). The Republican Professor is a pro-contemplating-history-and-theology podcast. Therefore, welcome Dr. Craig Blomberg, Ph.D., Emeritus Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Denver Seminary, where he taught for 37 years. In this episode we discuss the parable of the wineskins (and the patched garment) from Matthew 9, Mark 2, and Luke 5. Contrary to the popular interpretation of a radical redefinition and subversion of Jewish apocalyptic eschatology, this parable communicates the simple principle of dysfunctionality or maladaptation. You cannot force Jesus' disciples to fast while the Messiah is with them. It does not work. But when he is “taken away” (cf. Isa 53:8 LXX), they will fast. Through this parable, Jesus (and the Gospel authors) sought to establish the discipline of fasting in the early church. Show notes Fasting and Jewish apocalypticism - Matthew 9:14-15; Isaiah 53:7-8 LXX (4:03) The common supersessionist approach - Origen, Blomberg, and Wright (10:09) The purpose of the parable: dysfunctionality and maladaptation - Joshua 9:12-13 (24:18) Other parables that simply teach a principle - Luke 10:27, 29; Luke 12:15; Luke 11:8 (29:48) How should we understand this parable if there is no radical redefinition of Jewish eschatology?
