We premiere new music from Irish techno mainstay Offtrack as he presents his 8 track album on his Circuit Structure Records imprint. We feature ‘Discolouration' a slick entry into the world of minimalistic techno that leans on intricate rhythms and syncopated synth lines through this dizzying locked groove. Mullingar native Thomas Kimurray (Offtrack) has become a staple in the Irish techno scene within recent years through his work with Labworks as well as earning his stripes as a DJ across the country. Thomas's skills in the booth has seen him share with some of techno's most revered acts including; Sunil Sharpe, Paula Temple, Tommy Holohan, Cailín and more. Offtrack's 8 track LP, A journey through loop-driven hypnotic techno with a 90s taste. Each track showcases Offtrack's masterful production skills, combining rich intricate rhythms and pulsating basslines to create a immersive listening experience. The album's seamless blend of rhythm, atmosphere, textures and hypnotic melodies creates a captivating listening experience that showcases Offtrack's skill and taste for the genre. We premiere ‘Discolouration' a stripped back take on classic sci-fi inspired techno funk. Offtrack keeps the track minimalistic and pushes each element to the limit, squeezing out rhythms and grooves from each instrument. The track's half-stepping shuffle gives it an infectious groove that revolves in shifting cycles, Offtrack has perfected the art of subtle movement within the tracks framework to keep the track rolling and high-octane while still also simplistic. A proper slinky DJ tool for techno DJs that lust for spacey rhythms. How are ChatGPT and the rise of large language models impacting conversation designs and designers? Today, in Part 1 of our series on conversation design, we have four experts in the field weighing in on how the profession is changing and what designers should be thinking about. Joining me today in a series of one-on-one interviews are: Maaike Groenewege is an independent conversation designer and the creator of Convocat. She is currently the conversation design lead, prompt engineer, and NLU trainer at a U.S.-base stealth-stage startup. Groenewege has worked for 25 years as a designer, linguist, and technical writer. Tom Hewitson is the founder and CEO of Labworks.io, a webby-award winning conversation design studio and one of the leading voice-first game studios. Hewitson is a former journalist, content strategist at Facebook, and digital editor for Lonely Planet. He is also a lecturer at City University London and the organizer of the Unparsed Conference on conversation design. Peter Isaacs is the senior conversation design advocate at Voiceflow. He was previously a conversation designer at WooliesX, a division of Woolworths Group in Australia. Karen Kaushansky has been a conversation designer for 27 years. She is currently a Staff Conversation Designer at Google, and led the design for Google Watch. Also, the Unparsed Conference on conversation design is coming up later in July 2023 in London. If you use the code VOICEBOT, you get two tickets for the price of one. That applies to be the in-person and online conference tickets. Definitely try to join online if you can't make it to London. It is a great speaker lineup. You can sign-up at https://bit.ly/unparsed2023.

Tom Hewitson, Founder and CEO, Labworks.io, joins us to share how he built a business on Alexa and Google Assistant, how he finds, keeps hold and monetises users, design best practice and advice for those looking to do the same.In 2017 and 2018, when Amazon Alexa began rolling our in-skill purchasing (ISP), many thought that there'd be a gold rush on the Alexa platform. Business will be built, money will be made and all will be well. It happened with the App Store on mobile, after all. There was two problem that most developers were facing: how do you create something that's good enough to keep users coming back for more, and then how do you create an offer for those users that's worth paying for? Those challenges turned out to be pretty difficult to overcome and, to date, only three companies have managed to reach the levels of success many were aiming for in the Alexa space: Matchbox, with their suite of quizzes and kids games, Invoked apps with it's load of sleep and ambient sounds and, our guest this week, Labworks, with Voice Arcade. One weekend, wanting to explore Alexa for investigatory purposes, in case any clients were to ask about it in future, Tom Hewiston, founder of then-chatbot agency, Labworks, set about building a game. After launching the game and pretty much forgetting about it, some months later, Tom received a call from Amazon. Turns out, Tom's game was the third most popular game on the Alexa platform. Amazon were starting to pay developers for having popular skills as an incentive for them to continue improving skills and developing new skills. These rewards were enough for Tom to employ someone to help build out more games. Labworks pivoted from building chatbots for clients and into building games for Alexa and the rest is history. We chat to Tom about his journey, what he's learned, his thoughts on the industry and advice for others looking to build successful skills and actions on Alexa and Google Assistant. Here's the running order:00:02:50 About Tom Hewitson and Labworks.io00:05:50 Last year's Alexa skills usage00:09:30 Was it good timing to launch Voice Arcade?00:11:15 Ten hot takes on voice: what's changed in voice since 2019?00:13:00 What's changed for the better?00:15:20 Developer rewards: how helpful were they?00:19:15 What works and what doesn't for in-skill purchasing?00:20:00 What's the difference in typical ISPs vs Voice Arcade?00:22:15 Challenges with ISPs, offering more value than you're asking for in return00:24:30 How are you showing value?00:26:00 Vishnu Saran: How are you solving discoverability?00:30:40 Marek Mis: Advice for hobbyist voice devs wanting to go pro?00:33:40 Is there much experimentation left?00:38:40 How do you prioritise and test features?00:40:55 Any new platform features you're excited about?00:43:00 Matt Buck: Have you thought about putting your games in apps or on web?00:47:09 Katy Boungard: Brand identity and sonic branding00:49:20 Richard Warzecha: Discovering features within skills00:50:00 How much time is spent on happy path vs everything else?00:55:44 Manual testing vs code testing00:57:05 Example of something that took a lot of iteration to get right00:58:35: Richard Warzecha: Transferable principles from games to other voice experiences01:03:00 Tooling and Jovo01:04:00 General takeaways and contact detailsLinksLabworks.ioFollow Tom Hewitson on TwitterJoin Tom Hewitson on LinkedInSay "Alexa, open Voice Arcade"Say "Hey Google, open Voice Arcade" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Tom Hewitson is CEO and founder of Labworks.io, a voice app studio in London known from some of the most popular games on Alexa such as Would You Rather, Trivia Hero, True or False and Mental Samurai hosted by actor Rob Lowe. In this week's episode, Tom offers 10 Hot Takes from 2.5 Years in voice based on his presentation at the All About Voice Conference in Munich. He touches on some controversial topics such as lack of discovery, how closed platforms like Alexa and Google Assistant stifle innovation, the lack of return on multimodal efforts, too much focus on persona, and lack of monetization. It's a rare dose of unvarnished honesty from a voice developer in a public forum. Tom Hewitson founded Labworks in 2016 as a chatbot consultancy but shifted into voice apps about a year later. Before Labworks, Tom worked as a freelance journalist and a content designer. He spent time as a digital editor for Lonely Planet and a content strategist at Facebook. He earned an M.S. in political journalism and TV production from City University London and an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Sussex.

There are several 'Would You Rather' skills out there, but this on'es a good'n. It's by Labworks.io - also responsible for several great skills we've covered before, such as Trivia Hero and Star Commander. So would you rather listen to today's demo or be thoroughly dipped in Nutella and slowly nibbled to death by squirrels? Think carefully before answering.

Translating your Alexa Skill or Google Assistant Action is about more than translating the words in your script. It's about translating the user experience. Maaike Dufour calls this 'transcreating' and she joins us this week to show us how it's done. Why should you translate your Alexa Skill or Google Assistant Action? The world is getting smaller. Technology has enabled us to reach and connect with people from every corner of the earth with ease.Take this podcast for example. It’s listened to in over 40 different countries, most of which don’t speak English as a first language. In fact, the vast majority of the world don’t speak English and certainly not as a first language.Amazon Alexa is globalAmazon Alexa is localised for 11 countries at the time of writing. 5 of them don’t speak English as a first language (France, Germany, Austria, Japan, India). For global brands, having your Alexa Skill or Google Assistant Action available in every country you do business is a no-brainer. But even for hobbyists and smaller scale developers, think about the population of those countries and the potential impact you could have if you Skill was to do well in those locales. In this episodeWe’re being guided through the importance of making your Alexa Skill or Google Action available in other languages and what steps you should take to make that happen. We discuss why simply translating your Alexa Skill script won’t work and why you need to recreate the user experience in your desired language. We cover some of the cultural differences between countries and give some examples of why that makes literal translations difficult. For example, the X-Factor in the UK is a nationally recognised TV show. Whereas, in France, it aired for one season and wasn’t well received. Therefore, referencing the X-Factor in a French Skill is pointless.Maaike tells us about how, when transcreating your Alexa Skill, you might even need to change your entire persona due to the differences in how other cultures perceive different personas. For example, in the UK, a postman is simply someone who delivers mail. Whereas, in France, the postman is a close family friend who stops to chat and knows everybody in the street personally. In the UK, the postman is a distant stranger. In France, the postman is a close acquaintance. That makes for two entirely different personas. We discuss examples of words and phrases that exist in one language but don’t in another and how that can both open up opportunities and sometimes present challenges. Our guestWe’re joined by Maaike Dufour, Freelance Conversation UX Designer, co-founder of UX My Botand supreme transcreator of voice first applications. Maaike, quite rightly, prefers to use the term ‘transcreate’ instead of ‘translate’ because simply translating the words that make up your Alexa Skill or Google Assistant Action won’t work, as you’ll find out in this episode.Maaike has worked on voice first UX for a number of years. Having worked with the Smartly.aiteam, Maaike now works with Labworks.ioand is helping the team break into international markets through the transcreation of popular Alexa Skills such as Would You Ratherinto other languages.Where to listeniTunes/Apple podcastsSpotifyStitcherTuneIniHeartRadioPippaAny other podcast player you use or ask Any Pod to play VUX World on AlexaLinksRead Maaike's thoughts on MediumWatch Maaike's talk at Chatbots and Voice Assistants London on YouTubeFollow Maaike on TwitterCheck out Maaike's websiteVisit UX My Bot See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
