Perera Elsewhere, Fever Ray, Paula Temple and Maral discuss how the space you're in affects the music you write, the importance of mistakes or ‘curating errors', and the significance of technology, particularly when music production software reaches new countries. Perera Elsewhere was born in London and grew up between the UK, Singapore, and Malaysia. She played guitar and trumpet as a child and was really influenced by pirate radio. Now based in Berlin, she's part of the band Jahcoozi, and DJs as Mother Perera. She's played shows at iconic venues including Berghain, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Hamburg Philharmonic. She performs in extraordinary stage outfits, and her music has been described as "doom-folk". Swedish singer-songwriter and record producer Karin Dreijer, aka Fever Ray, was one half of the electronic music duo The Knife, and released their debut solo album in 2009. They love to use masks, body paint and intricate costumes when they perform live. The UK's Paula Temple is one of Europe's most in-demand techno artists. She's a self-proclaimed “noisician” known for making awe-inducing techno, and co-runs the label Noise Manifesto. She's a regular on the festival circuit, having recently performed at Time Warp, DGTL, Awakenings, and Extrema Outdoor. Maral is an Iranian-American DJ and producer. She takes snippets of Iranian folk music and poetry, and repurposes them as glitchy sound experiments to bring the Persian classical repertoire to the dancefloor, something she describes as "jamming with my ancestors". Her musical creations are driven by artful experimentalism, and last year she released her third album, Ground Groove.

Today we premiere new rolling techno coming from straight from Research residents Aeron XTC & Taint for Free Download. The Dublin based DJs and producers showcase a blistering locked groove that leans on trippy soundscapes and thunderous low-end power. Research residents and co-owners Aeron XTC and Taint are two of Dublin's most seasoned techno DJs, having played in most venues across the capital as well as being festival favourites, the pair live and breathe techno music through every aspect of their life. Alongside playing regular show's together across Index, Farrier & Draper, Wigwam, Cellar, AVA Festival, Electric Picnic, Life Festival and more, the pair have been busy crafting a unique sound within the studio. The duo's workflow both behind the booth & within the studio complements each other greatly, each adding their own flavour to a unified sound which oozes out in an oddly satisfying yet contradictory manor. Having respectively played alongside some of the titans of the techno scene including; Karenn, Paula Temple, Perc, FJAAK, SPFDJ, Blawan and many more, the pair are well versed in the art of warming up a room – an often forgotten art of DJing in Dublin City. Their latest offering comes in the form of a ferocious loop driven slice of Dublin techno. The pair showcase an uncompromising taste of dynamic and rhythmic techno, that growls from the belly up. Intricate synth swells snarl through the mix as they play off a mind-bending lead sequence to nauseating effect. This is proper loop-driven techno, that packs a punch relentless flurry of punches. Co-mixed with @Aasthma. There are few people who have had as much of an impact on contemporary electronic music as Karin Dreijer, whether with their brother Olof in The Knife or with their solo project, Fever Ray. From massive indie-pop hits to paradigm-shifting dance records, Dreijer's work takes a psychedelic, plasticine approach to synth pop, with their trademark pitch-shifted vocals and psuedo-tropical beats. As Fever Ray, they've tapped into the global club music underground, working with producers like Nídia, Paula Temple, Deena Abdelwahed, Vessel and, on new album Radical Romantics—one of our favourite albums of the year so far at RA, hands down—even Nine Inch Nails. Another important collaborator in Dreijer's world is Peder Mannerfelt, the Swedish techno producer who has been working with Fever Ray since the first album back in 2009. He co-mixed this RA Podcast as part of Aasthma, his duo with Pär Grindvik. The mix is a survey of Dreijer's favourite dance music, some of which informs their one-of-a-kind sound world as Fever Ray. There's plenty of music from the groundbreaking East African scene centered around Nyege Nyege Tapes, plus DJ Haram, Equinkoxx, Tayhana and more, and even two exclusive, upcoming Fever Ray remixes from Avalon Emerson and Nifra. It's a rare look into the musical tastes of a true visionary. Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/883

Niall has been a key cog in the Dublin techno machine since the early 2000s when nights like Electric City and venues such as Redbox and the old Tivoli Theatre were in their prime. A student of the fast, loop-driven techno from the late 90s, and early 2000s eras, his sets are high energy, full of fast transitions and expert blends. Since late 2009, Niall has been a resident DJ with the renowned Subject events, playing alongside some of the biggest names in house, techno, and electro, as well as appearances at clubs and festivals such as District 8, Index, Twisted Pepper, Life, and Electric Picnic. Before she was Femanyst, Akua Grant was called The Lady Blacktronika, also known as the First Lady Of Beatdown. Beatdown was a type of of ultra-deep house characterized by creamy chords, soulful melodies and, in Grant's case, honeyed vocals. She ran an integral label called Sound Black Recordings, home to some of her best tracks. But around 2017, she turned towards what was essentially the polar opposite: industrial-tinged super hard techno, full of distortion and anger. This is where we find Grant now, as Femanyst, with a mix that shows off heavy-duty techno that still has a heart. She started her own new label, called Dark Carousel, and has released on Paula Temple's Noise Manifesto. She manages to take some of the hardest techno around and imbue it with her signature melodic style. This is probably one of the toughest RA Podcasts yet, but it's also full of feeling, dynamism and tension. Get your best listening setup ready and sink in for two hours. @msladyblacktronika Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/868
A veritable powerhouse of the Croatian techno scene Insolate has been establishing a global presence as a DJ and producer for over 20 years delivering as both a label boss at Out Of Place and the creative force behind their electrifying TRAUM events. Hailing from Osijek, Croatia, on the wide Croatian East – a town that at first glance a heavy industrial atmosphere overshadows, she is making her first steps as a DJ back in 1997 before taking over European and worldwide clubs. Her list of clubs and partys she played is impressive and includes Berghain, Rex, Tresor, Under Club, Club d'Anvers, Unter, Exit Festival, Tomorrowland, ADE and Dimensions Festival. Amongst many European clubs she played numerous tours in Colombia and recently added USA, China and Argentina to the list. As a producer, she's had a string of releases on highly respected labels including DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted, Marcelus's Singular and Developer's Modularz - supported and played by some of techno's finest including Laurent Garnier, DVS1, Dax J and Ilario Alicante. Also she released the stellar Obscure Object Of Desire EP on JoeFarr's new User Experience imprint, EP for a Suara and beautiful EP for Proletarijat, label run by Sev Dah. She also contributed to Ben Sim's compilation Tribology among giants as Planetary Assault Systems, Oscar Mulero, Steffi etc. and also made super interesting collaboration with french producer Arnaud le Texier and released EP with him for Prodigal Son. In 2019. she announced her debut album. The album Order is Chaos was released as a double vinyl and contains 10 tracks with extremely interesting collaborations with MATRIXXMAN and singer SARA RENAR. DJ Mag (UK) described album as “exciting journey thru trans-dimensional vocals, acid drenched sequences and floor obligated bangers.” Insolate is also a major contributor to the Croatian techno scene, so much so that she was in Ibiza to receive the award for "Dance Nation of the Year" at the DJ Awards on behalf of her nation. Her and long-time partner in crime Volster also run the event series TRAUM in her native Osijek. TRAUM events have cemented their place in the clubbing calendar with quality artists like Paula Temple, Antigone, Cassegrain, Janice, Etapp Kyle and Milton Bradley, just to name a few. The success of the TRAUM nights caught the attention of Red Bull Music Academy and Dimensions – both of which they have hosted official events for. Insolate being an international messenger of techno was recognised by Ambassador award that gave her a title "Croatia's ambassador overseas" for 2017. The final part of putting Osijek on the techno map was taken in 2015 with the launch of the label Out Of Place which Insolate runs with Volster. The label was named in honour of the beautiful struggle of carving your own way into the scene from a place that's well off the grid from the traditional capitals of techno. Now five releases strong, the label has already had contributions from heavyweights like Milton Bradley, Developer, JoeFarr, Francois X, Janice and many more. As a DJ, Insolate is well known for her no-compromise, pure-bred techno sets. It's clear to anyone who's seen her perform that she's an artist with a lot of experience but also plenty of inspiration and ambition, and a deep knowledge of techno. She is simply a natural presence in a DJ booth. If you've seen her play, you will know exactly what this means.
We start the week with new music from Limerick boss man Chaz Moloney as he debut on Obsuur's sub-label Ótomo Trax. We premiere the Aeron XTC remix as he pumps some rolling rhythms into the original, serving up a pumping rework of Chaz's original. Chaz Moloneys 4 track debut on Obsuur's sub-label Ótomo Trax is comprised of 2 original tracks and 2 remixes from two Irish techno stalwarts, Aeron XTC & Mode_1. “I've really taken my time in releasing any music over the past while, as I wanted to wait until I was fully confident and sure of what I was putting out. And I think this EP, although only 2 tracks long, captures the sound I'm chasing at the moment.“ Chaz Moloney has been at the helm of Limericks techno scene for many years. Running Touch Of Techno and being one half of Midweek means that Chaz is dedicating his full time to a career within dance music. Having had a successful year with Midweek releases alongside David Sheeran, Chaz's willingness to release some new music under his own name slowed down, as the Limerick native wanted to craft a idiosyncratic sound that portrayed his music in an idiosyncratic light and banging intent. Aeron XTC has been a staple part of Dublin's thriving techno scene for many years, having run many important nights such as Trainwreck and now Research label. If you've been attending any sort of techno night in Dublin in the last decade, there's a rather sizeable chance that you've caught Aeron XTC at the helm of the decks one night or another. Aeron's versatility and adroitness as a DJ has seen him play long alongside some of the best DJ's on the planet. English: rRoxymore's music is an intriguing and unique blend of contrasting textures, marked by the interplay she creates between organic and synthetic sounds. Formerly based in Paris but now firmly established in the Berlin scene, her edgy rhythms, intriguing synthesizers and manipulations of acoustic instruments and found sounds have made her a unique voice in contemporary dance music. Following acclaimed releases on labels such as Human Level, Macro and Ostgut Ton, as well as a collaborative project with Paula Temple, Olof Dreijer and Planningtorock, rRoxymore has recently released her most defining works to date: the two-part Thoughts of an Introvert series on Bristol-based label, Don't Be Afraid. Built around a barrage of shifting, synthesized rhythms and fluttering melodies, these records are further proof that she is a key part of techno's present and future. Today's premiere features a standout remix from Aero, as he does a remarkable job at providing a fresh take on Alt8's 'Cairo at Night'. The remix is coupled with Alt8's single release on Dense & Pika's highly regarded Kneaded Pains label. Give this a spin. Both Alt8 and Aero are knocking their releases out of the park as of late. They have shown that their productions are highly regarded across the entire underground music industry. Having gained a heap of support from artists such as Amelie Lens, DJ Bone, Dax J, Marcell Dettmann, Luke Slater, Paula Temple, Slam and more. So seeing both of them on a release together on Kneaded Pains is no surprise for both of these artists. Alt8's variation of 'Cairo at Night' showcases some Arabic inspiration, as it contains spiritually charged vocals, bouncing tom toms and throbbing bass for quite a unique and transcendental techno vibe. Aero's fresh approach embodies some remnants of the original, but at the same time provides a more raw flavour, really honing into his signature sound that comprises of old school techno elements with a more modern feel. In other words, music that is best suited for the dancefloor. Today we premiere a track from a new Irish techno label with a track coming from Dublin techno boss, Mode_1. Robbie Kavnagh aka Mode_1 has contributed deep and driving techno track with howling synth lines, pounding kick-drums and eery atmospheres throughout. This is not to miss from one of Dublins most consistent producers. Mode_1 has been busy in the studio, supplying a wealth of music within recent times. Mode_1's carefully crafted DJ tools lye in tangent with his well orchestrated DJ sets which have caught the attention of many through his time as a Subject resident, playing regularly in Dublin and on the festival circuit. Mode_1 produces clean and powerful peak time techno and his DJ sets would be best described as fast and trippy with a groove. The Dublin based selector has shared the stage with some of technos most formidable figures including; Ben Klock, Slam, Ben Sims, Dave Clarke, Paula Temple, Blawan and more. In the studio Mode_1 has been constructing well oiled techno records and releasing them on highly regraded techno imprints including; Naked Lunch Records, Knotweed Rec, Fiedeltwo, Truncate and more. Mode_1's track Recourse is classic rolling techno. Recourse is a tough, trippy and sinister. Shrieking synths take centre stage of the track as atmospheres swirl around the track. Pounding kick drums and gnarly percussion give the track a real peak time feel, yet it still feel's utterly spaced out. The is grat work from one of Dublins finest techno producers. We premier Italian techno DJ and producer Lady Maru's contribution to the 10-year anniversary compilation of Berlin queer collective and label ‘Gegen' with her track Kill Ur Lobby. Lady Maru best known for her post punk and EBM style tracks takes a different direction on this track as she returns to our sound-systems with a more industrial style affair. On the back of releases on Diffuse Reality, Revok Records and Industrial Complex as well as a revered collaboration release with Samantha Tongi, Lady Mary is going from strength to strength. Our second premier of the 3 part VA is a banging industrial techno track with hypnotic undertones. The harsh and pounding drives the track as whirling synth bounces from side to side. Jarring claps come slapping in as they drive the track even further. The rave inspired breakdown brings the track to a boiling point before gyrating back down to a it's raucous hypnotic essence. The second volume of the compilation comes with tracks from techno house- hold names and scene favourites such as Paula Temple, Scalameriya, Esther Duijn, Femnyst and more. Celebrating 10 years of existence, Gegen will showcase their past decade of parties into a newly founded label, by showcasing the artists that have been at the heart of the infamous party series. The compilation is built on a sonic narrative arc, with releases growing harder, faster and harsher, mimicking the progression of a Gegen party. Gegen will be releasing the 3 parts every two weeks. Gegen invite listeners and friends old and new to a month long journey through the Gegen sound. Based in Barcelona, this Italian artist has largely demonstrated his unique musical style: a mix of mental, disturbing melodies and powerful Techno. The name PØLI comes from the polygon, a geometric figure with multiple sides that represents the eclecticism of his music. He has a Techno stamp, but he is not a purist and his sets always carry different influences coming from House, Detroit, Dance, Dub, Trance and 80's music. PØLI is well known for his strong closings, always ending with a great energy. Since his first performance and success at HEX, he has also performed at some of the best clubs and festivals in Barcelona and Europe, such as DGTL, Brunch-In the Park, Input, Razzmatazz, Amnesia, Nitsa, Moog, Laut, and many more. He has played alongside great international DJ's like Ben Klock, Oscar Mulero, Jeff Mills, Ellen Allien, Marcel Dettmann, Len Faki, Chris Liebing, Ben Sims, DVS1, I Hate Models, Dax J, Rebekah, Paula Temple, Blawan, just to name a few. In 2014 he founded the Techno movement HEX with his partner Lorenzo, quickly becoming a referent in Spain and now planning its expansion all around Europe. In 2015, PØLI was awarded the Best DJ Revelation prize by Barnabeats in Barcelona. 2019 was the year where Lorenzo and him launched their record label: HEX Recordings, through a first release on vinyl, composed by 4 originals from them and various remixes coming from a very talented roster of international Techno artists including Regal, Zanias, VSK, Insolate and many more. Balrog is a producer and DJ from Leeds (UK), who has supplanted himself in the darker and grittier side of industrial techno with a focus on heavy groove-ridden drums, driving bass, and distorted vocals. His tracks and DJ mixes look back to the classic hard and grooving techno of the early 2000's, but with a fresh injection of modern industrial power. Balrog has gone from strength to strength over the last few years playing at events such as Jaded and releasing on labels including Moments In Time, The Meaning of Rave, COUP, Green Fetish, Taro, and Gobsmacked. These releases and many unreleased tracks have received support from some of the biggest in the scene including Amelie Lens, Dax J, Rebekah, Paula Temple, Manni Dee, Tham, and many more. 2021 is set to be a huge year for Balrog with forthcoming releases on Soma, Green Fetish, Etruria, and Instruments of Discipline. Balrog also runs his own record label, Khazad Records, which releases music from the very best industrial and hard techno talent around. We're in Dublin for the Local Selection, as one of the countries fastest rising techno producers, Billy Spike Iland provides us with the latest mix. We've been huge fans of his tunes for quite a while so we're delighted to feature a mix from him. Pre-lockdown Billy was organising stand out club shows in Dublin’s vibrant scene, bringing over the likes of Mortiz Von Oswald, CEM, Mama Snake and DMX Krew to the capital. Previous gigs include support for Mortiz Von Osawald, DMX Krew, Ryan Elliot, CEM and Mama Snake. As well as making his international debut at Jaded London & Festival Forte in Portugal, alongside artists such as Oscar Mulero, Paula Temple, Boston 168, Jonas Kopp and Dave Clarke. With no clubs and festivals for the last year, Billy has used the time wisely focusing on the studio, with numerous releases under his belt in the last year alone on the likes of Alien Sound Trax, Sulino Records & Expel your demons Records and most recent, Waterford's Kriminal Records. Expect an hour of hypnotic, driving techno that we've become accustomed to with his releases and style. This is your Wednesday soundtrack. This mix that's been well worth the wait, as Bunkerterror steps up to the Local Selection hot seat for a well overdue contribution to our series. A producer who needs little-to-no introduction here in Ireland, who continues to impress audiences and techno mainstays with his forceful industrial techno, gaining buckets of well-deserved attention with his productions, with huge support from artists like Perc, Paula Temple and most recently Rebekah to name just a few. Most recently Bunkerterror remixed a track for the mysterious balaclava donned RIOT CODE, as he gave their 'No Witnesses' track the full Bunkerterror makeover, with a full on assault of dangerous and industrial techno to give a glimpse of where the exciting artist can go with his productions. For now, dive into this hour of power, with a 23 track mix featuring releases from the likes of VSK, Swarm Intelligence, UVB, Blacksun, Salameriya, ABSL, Militia and Schacke to name a few. This bangs! The raucous, suspicious and mysterious Riot Code duo have been hard at work since the beginning of lockdown, with new tunes and mixes very much on the agenda. Riot Code takes the form of two unknown artists, creating one very important vision. Their atmospheric yet hard hitting productions take us on an unpredictable journey of old school and fast paced mayhem. The woollen warriors intertwine break-beat, electro and techno to deliver blistering sets, boasting an exceptionally impressive discography of unreleased goodness. On February 19th, Riot Code's Tripwire EP is launched, included are 3 original tracks, plus a dangerous and industrial remix from the rising Irish techno star, Bunkerterror. The young Dublin man continues to impress audiences and techno mainstays, with his forceful industrial techno, gaining buckets of well deserved attention with his productions, with support from artists like Perc and Paula Temple to name just a couple.
