Summary: Dr. Marcus shares his health journey and how it led him to his current practice. He emphasises the importance of finding clarity and pursuing passions in life. Many of his clients are in their midlife and face challenges related to stress, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation. Dr. Marcus takes a comprehensive approach to working with clients, starting with a thorough history and examination. He often focuses on gut health, as it plays a significant role in overall well-being. Testing for nutrient deficiencies and gluten sensitivity is crucial in addressing gut issues. The conversation explores various topics related to gut health, food sensitivities, and personalised nutrition. It discusses the testing methods for gut issues, including celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. The importance of personalised elimination diets and the role of food intolerances, such as dairy, are also highlighted. The concept of hidden and invisible stressors in food is explored, emphasising the need for individualised approaches. The conversation delves into the principles of personalised medicine and precision nutrition, emphasising the importance of considering each person's unique needs. The impact of ultra-processed foods and the role of protein in longevity and muscle maintenance are also discussed. This conversation explores the importance of protein in aging and the role it plays in muscle health. It emphasizes the need for individuals to focus on building lean muscle and maintaining physical activity to improve overall health and vitality. The conversation also highlights the significance of having a growth mindset, setting meaningful goals, and finding enjoyment in physical activities. It emphasises the power of small habits and the importance of self-compassion in achieving health goals. The conversation concludes by discussing the importance of regular checkups, mental health, and finding the right health professional to support one's health journey. Dr. Marcus Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmarcushewitson/ Dr. Marcus Website: https://osnem.com.au/the-team Takeaways: Personalised medicine and nutrition are important in addressing individual health issues. Gut health is a significant factor for many clients, with about 50% experiencing gut issues. History, examination, and investigation are key in understanding a client's health problems. Clues in the nails, skin, and tongue can provide insights into a client's nutritional state. Inflammation and disease often have underlying causes in the gut. Assessing nutrient status is important for addressing gut health issues. Gluten sensitivity and celiac disease can lead to gut permeability and inflammation. Food intolerances, like dairy intolerance, can cause various symptoms. Personalized medicine and individualized dietary approaches are crucial for addressing gut issues and achieving optimal health. Individuals should seek advice from their doctors and monitor kidney function when considering protein intake. Protein is important for maintaining and building lean muscle mass, especially in midlife. Finding enjoyable activities and exercises is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Self-compassion and self-care are crucial for overall well-being. Mental health and finding meaning and purpose in life are important considerations. Seeking out integrative doctors or functional medicine practitioners can provide comprehensive health care.

Tom Hewitson, Founder and CEO, Labworks.io, joins us to share how he built a business on Alexa and Google Assistant, how he finds, keeps hold and monetises users, design best practice and advice for those looking to do the same.In 2017 and 2018, when Amazon Alexa began rolling our in-skill purchasing (ISP), many thought that there'd be a gold rush on the Alexa platform. Business will be built, money will be made and all will be well. It happened with the App Store on mobile, after all. There was two problem that most developers were facing: how do you create something that's good enough to keep users coming back for more, and then how do you create an offer for those users that's worth paying for? Those challenges turned out to be pretty difficult to overcome and, to date, only three companies have managed to reach the levels of success many were aiming for in the Alexa space: Matchbox, with their suite of quizzes and kids games, Invoked apps with it's load of sleep and ambient sounds and, our guest this week, Labworks, with Voice Arcade. One weekend, wanting to explore Alexa for investigatory purposes, in case any clients were to ask about it in future, Tom Hewiston, founder of then-chatbot agency, Labworks, set about building a game. After launching the game and pretty much forgetting about it, some months later, Tom received a call from Amazon. Turns out, Tom's game was the third most popular game on the Alexa platform. Amazon were starting to pay developers for having popular skills as an incentive for them to continue improving skills and developing new skills. These rewards were enough for Tom to employ someone to help build out more games. Labworks pivoted from building chatbots for clients and into building games for Alexa and the rest is history. We chat to Tom about his journey, what he's learned, his thoughts on the industry and advice for others looking to build successful skills and actions on Alexa and Google Assistant. Here's the running order:00:02:50 About Tom Hewitson and Labworks.io00:05:50 Last year's Alexa skills usage00:09:30 Was it good timing to launch Voice Arcade?00:11:15 Ten hot takes on voice: what's changed in voice since 2019?00:13:00 What's changed for the better?00:15:20 Developer rewards: how helpful were they?00:19:15 What works and what doesn't for in-skill purchasing?00:20:00 What's the difference in typical ISPs vs Voice Arcade?00:22:15 Challenges with ISPs, offering more value than you're asking for in return00:24:30 How are you showing value?00:26:00 Vishnu Saran: How are you solving discoverability?00:30:40 Marek Mis: Advice for hobbyist voice devs wanting to go pro?00:33:40 Is there much experimentation left?00:38:40 How do you prioritise and test features?00:40:55 Any new platform features you're excited about?00:43:00 Matt Buck: Have you thought about putting your games in apps or on web?00:47:09 Katy Boungard: Brand identity and sonic branding00:49:20 Richard Warzecha: Discovering features within skills00:50:00 How much time is spent on happy path vs everything else?00:55:44 Manual testing vs code testing00:57:05 Example of something that took a lot of iteration to get right00:58:35: Richard Warzecha: Transferable principles from games to other voice experiences01:03:00 Tooling and Jovo01:04:00 General takeaways and contact detailsLinksLabworks.ioFollow Tom Hewitson on TwitterJoin Tom Hewitson on LinkedInSay "Alexa, open Voice Arcade"Say "Hey Google, open Voice Arcade" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Wine for Normal People
Ep 315: The Grape Miniseries -- Mourvedre/Monastrell

The grape miniseries continues! This time we cover the grape known as Monstrell in Spain, Mourvèdre in France, and Mataro in other parts of the world. Difficult to grow and make, when treated well the wines from this grape are unlike any other -- herbal, gamy, powerful. The key things to know about Monastrell/Mourvèdre: The grape originated in Spain, and then moved to the Roussillon, Rhône, and Provence in France. It needs a lot of heat to grow, so it can only thrive in hot locations with lots of sun but ample water. Flavors: They vary greatly depending on where the wine is made, but generally it has deep color, full body, is tannic and high in alcohol. Spain: can be more like red fruit -- cherries and raspberries with spice and herbs. France, especially Bandol: the wines have more dark fruit (if any fruit character at all) with spice, olives, herbs (garrigue as they call it in southern France), and a gamy, barnyard or wild animal smell to the wine. With time (3-5 years) that flavor mellows to something more akin to leather or tobacco and the tannins calm. In the new works styles are less tannic and less gamy. In blends: Mourvèdre adds fullness, flavor and structure that complements the more lifted Grenache and the elegant Syrah. In rosé: The grape helps these wines have longevity, lending tannin and great flavor to the wine Food Pairings: Meats or root/hearty vegetables that are braised, grilled, or in a stew. Hard cheeses work too.   Where can you find it? France: Provence: Especially Bandol, where the finest Mourvèdre is made. Producers we mentioned are Domaine Tempier (reds and rosé), Château de Pibarnon Languedoc-Roussillon: one to watch for more varietal Mourvèdre in the future Rhône:  in blends and especially in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. We mention Beaucastel as having a high percentage of Mourvèdre   Spain (called Monastrell) Central and southeast Spain: Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia Main grape in: Alicante, Almansa, Jumilla, Valencia, Yecla, Bullas Producers: Luzon, Juan Gil, Castaño, El Nido, Casa de la Ermita California Northern and Central CA: Contra Costa County (old plantings found here), San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Sonoma Producers: Crux,(They are featured in episode 220) Tablas Creek  (episodes 162 and 281) Bonny Doon Ridge Vineyards Other US:  Washington State, Oregon, Arizona, TX, Virginia, Chile, South Africa   Australia Used as a component in GSMs  -- Grenache Syrah Mourvèdre blends South Australia: Riverland (bulk wine), Barossa, McLaren Vale New South Wales: Riverina (bulk wine area) Producers making single varietal Mourvèdre: D’Arenberg Torbreck Turkey Flat  Hewitson   A link to where I'll be for upcoming Wine For Normal People book signings: www.winefornormalpeople.com  _______________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week: Thanks to YOU! The podcast supporters on Patreon, who are helping us to make the podcast possible and who we give goodies in return for their help! It's a rare dose of unvarnished honesty from a voice developer in a public forum.  Tom Hewitson founded Labworks in 2016 as a chatbot consultancy but shifted into voice apps about a year later. Thinking of a bootcamp as "a series of long conversations" and other gems from teaching software craftsmanship. Kenneth & Len are joined by Mike Hewitson for a talk on the developer bootcamps that Mike helps to facilitate at Investec. Mike shares with us his journey from the army, to the railways, and how he got onto the financial services line. He has had several stops along the way in various insurers and supporting businesses, with some great stories from each stop along the way. One of the moments Mike is most proud of is being part of a team that got asked by business to "slow down a bit", since they were delivering their software consistently quicker than business expected (or could manage). These were the days before "feature flags" were formalized, and nightly builds and deployments were hair raising. Mike's current stop is at Investec, and this is where Mike helped institutionalize their culture of brown bag sessions into a more structured bootcamp format. These bootcamps run concurrently, with each group being about 10 developers, and they carry on for 8 months! We unpack what the students do during their bootcamp, the support they receive from the leadership in the group, and get a few tips and tricks to get started with our own bootcamps.
