Jason Singh is a sound artist, producer and performer. His creative output is an exploration of the natural world, voice and a wide range of music technologies. Works include live performance, immersive installations, studio recordings, broadcasts and sound walks. In this show he talks about how he makes music using the MIDI Sprout interface, a device that senses the electrical voltage of plants and converts it into MIDI information. He then uses the notes to control Ableton to produce the sounds he used in his recordings and immersive installations.Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:48 - Getting Started in Audio06:17 - Collaborating With Other Creatives09:46 - Studio Toys12:48 - Custom Built Instruments And Interfaces14:08 - Live Performances19:41 - Collaborating With Nature Using Biofeedback25:07 - Using The MIDI Sprout and PlantWave29:47 - Experiencing Nature Sounds In Real-Time31:44 - Creating An Immersive Installation For Womad40:54 - Opening Your Ears To Everyday SoundsAudio Credits:Afternoon - a commission by National Trust to create an entirely vocal piece which mimics the sounds of a woodland area in Tatton Park in Cheshire.Passing Light - an Ambient Jazz piece featuring trumpet player Yazz Ahmed.Rhubarb - is a biosonfication track from the latest release "The Hidden Music of Plants and Trees", created in collaboration with a Rhubarb plant.MIDI Sprout - https://www.midisprout.com/PlantWave - https://plantwave.com/en-gbJason Singh BiogJason Singh is sound artist, nature beatboxer, producer, dj, curator, facilitator and performer. Japanese prefixes for words of negation, removal, absence and obsolescence. English equivalent prefixes include Ob De Ab Im Dis. Vocalisations for Japanese sounds of negation are drawn from the source sample and used in the work. ------------------ This piece is a lament for the Ainu, indigenous people of the islands surrounding the Sea of Okhotsk, now identified as part of the northern Japanese archipelago. The Ainu people settled these islands several thousand years before the arrival of the Yamato Japanese. For centuries, seudo-scientific racial ideologies, which included the false belief of the superiority of the Yamato character, marked the indigenous Ainu as “sub-human primitives”, making illegal their language, culture, right to gather and hunt. Eugenicist theories justified “racial improvements” to the indigenous population, with forced sterilisation and rape of Ainu women by “pureblood” minzoku. Male and female Ainu populations were separated, with males exiled to southern Japan to work as debentured slaves. As recently as 2020 the Japanese prime minister celebrated Japan as the world's oldest monoculture, negating further what limited visibility and rights the Ainu people may have in law.* As a consequence of systematic erasure by the Japanese, the Ainu language is one of the most critically endangered. There are only two fluent speakers left on earth. endangeredlanguages.com/lang/1212 ------------------ Technical notes The piece was recorded in a single take as a live improvisation using only the source sample. Vocalisations for the Japanese sounds of negation are drawn from the source sample and used in the performance. The work was made using Leafcutter John's Forester-2022. leafcutterjohn.com/forester-2022/ ------------------ *It is worth noting that until 1981 indigenous Australians were required to identify themselves on the national census as “Flora and Fauna” with no reference to their being human. Starling murmuration reimagined by thequietwood. "The field recording reminded me of walks and runs (very slow jogs), on my local moor (Dartmoor). "I imagined myself going for a run on a crisp spring morning, crunching my way over icy grass and stopping by a hedgerow where I briefly disturb the Starlings, and then I proceed to run on, watching the murmuration display of the soaring and swirling Starlings. "The field recording was used to create all the additional drum sounds (Snares, Hi-hats) and the pulsating "wind" rhythmical elements. I have additionally layered simple simple arpeggios to represent the "running" and then further synth work for the flying Starlings. "This piece was also inspired by the latest Leafcutter John album, Come Parade With Us."

In a world of daily pleases and thank-yous, obligatory thank-you notes, and polite appreciation how can we express authentic gratitude with sincerity? Has lockdown made us more grateful? Can the expectation of gratitude be a burden? Poet Kate Fox assesses the etiquette of writers' acknowledgements – who to thank? How much is too much? Is there such a thing as oversharing? Comedy writer Jack Bernhardt imagines how grateful you'd have to be – forever - if Superman saved your life. Sound artist Leafcutter John makes gratitude reverberate through a sheet of steel, and poet Michael Symmons Roberts reflects on the complexity of expressing gratitude in praise poetry, in a post secular world. I've gotten so many requests to interview Leafcutter John - but it really blew up after his recent work at the Ableton Loop conference. I reached out to him and he was nice enough to say "Yes" to the interview request. What was cool is that it started out like an interview, but quickly turned into a chat about how we do our respective things. This was a great one, and I can't wait to meet John in person. Awesome guy - and someone that has been quite thoughtful about what and how he does his thing. If you know Leafcutter John's work, this won't surprise you. But if you are new to his work, I think you'll really get into this talk. Enjoy!
When there are songs by artists such as Leafcutter, Nicolas Jaar, Four Tet, Afterhours, Olafur Arnalds (just to name a few) in the same mix, to mention the undisputed quality of each individual track is unnecessary. But when these songs are mixed together by an artist like Michael Lovisa, master in creating unique moods (listen to believe his last remix of The Last Day by Moby, inside the mix….ah, you can download it for free: https://soundcloud.com/michaellovisa/moby-the-last-day-michael ), where acoustic instruments, electronic beats and vocals (like Grow Up With Me by musician poet Keaton Henson) alternate with moments of silence capable of enhancing the simple melodies, there would be much to say and to weave praises. But, after listening to it, it's easy to be speechless, to enjoy that last moment of silence before returning to the chaotic and noisy reality. However, something simple and commonplace is worth to say: close your eyes, press play, turn up the volume and relax .... bon voyage! Wild-haired rhythmical genius Seb Rochford, of jazz futurists Polar Bear, provides a heady juxtaposition of hip hop and shoegaze for the latest Clash DJ podcast. Polar Bear have been a continually experimental and innovative force in contemporary jazz, blending a punky ethos, electronica and rock riffing with traditional jazz ideas, frequently held together by Rochford’s incredible rhythms and dexterity. Starting off with some spacey ambience courtesy of fellow Polar Bear bandmate Leafcutter John, Youngs Teflon and Angel Gaze then verbally smack you around a bit before melting into the hazy tones of The Invisible. And so the cycle continues, with a blend of blissed-out instrumentals peppered with processed beats, Mozart and a dash of world music experimentation, before the relaxed rhyming of 2morrows Victory and Micachu’s ever-charming weirdness bring things to a close. Polar Bear play at Rich Mix, London, on December 15, where they will be performing material from their new album, scheduled for release next year. Seb Rochford tracklist 1.
