Esta semana, en un nuevo episodio de Rebelión Sónica, los invitamos a escuchar música del nuevo disco de la importante banda alemana Einstürzende Neubauten, “Rampen (apm: alien pop music)”. De acuerdo a un comunicado publicado por el grupo liderado por Blixa Bargeld, “siempre hemos improvisado, en el escenario, en el pasado más que ahora, en el pasado realmente sólo eso, en un pasado muy lejano. Luego, con el creciente inventario de materiales y canciones, las improvisaciones disminuyeron, pero siempre permaneció como parte de nuestros conciertos. En el lenguaje de Neubauten, estas improvisaciones frente al público se llamaban y se siguen llamando “Rampen”. “Rampa” en el sentido de acelerar”. Más adelante el texto señala que “Esto significa: las versiones publicadas -en el nuevo disco- no son presentaciones en vivo, para muchos ni siquiera hubo una grabación en vivo con la calidad adecuada, sino que son encarnaciones reconstruidas en el estudio, mejoradas y con letras de esos Rampen (…) Después de la gira de 2022, durante la cual, por supuesto, tocamos un Rampe en casi todos los shows, decidimos desarrollarlos, o lo mejor de ellos, en un álbum completo. De estas grabaciones de gira de 23 Rampen, seleccionamos 14 y las reelaboramos pieza por pieza en el estudio Candy Bomber de Berlín, en la primavera y principios del verano de 2023”. La forma en que trabajamos en el estudio no es muy diferente a la de los Beatles o cualquier otra banda hace 60 años: estamos todos en la misma habitación y grabamos las canciones juntos. Claro, hay sobregrabaciones y ediciones, pero son esencialmente grabaciones "en vivo". Mejoramos, cambiamos, descartamos y en algún momento lo tenemos. Al final terminamos 15 Rampen, uno de los cuales se escapó espontáneamente en el estudio (“Planet Umbra”). Un álbum doble: música pop alienígena”, remata la declaración. As we often like to do when a new album by a landmark legacy band is released, we're setting this week's podcast aside for the discussion of Rampen - APM: Alien Pop Music, the brand new LP by industrial royalty Einstürzende Neubauten. We're making some attempts to situate the record in relation to the rest of the latter-era Neubauten catalog, but also spinning off into discussion of Blixa Bargeld's poetics, the exactitude of the band's not-so-noisy percussion, and the experience of listening to a new record by a band as storied as Neubauten.

Porcupine Tree had initially been a Wilson solo project but he recruited Richard in 1993 and over the next 17 years, became one of the shining lights of the neo-prog / pop scene, embracing a more heavy style as the years went on. Reuniting in 2021, they released the first Porcupine Tree album in 12 years with 2022's ‘Closure/ Continuation', a critically acclaimed return to form. Er schmuggelt Musik in den Ostteil der Stadt, organisiert das einzige Konzert von Joy Division im Westberlin sowie die zwei illegalen Konzerte der Toten Hosen in Ostberlin. Nick Cave wohnt bei ihm und kurz vor dem Mauerfall produziert er beim Staatslabel Amiga das Debütalbum der DDR-Band Die Vision. Darüber spricht Mark Reeder und verrät, dass Blixa Bargeld ein Arbeitstier ist, New Orders Hit "Blue Monday" einem Computerabsturz zu verdanken ist und was Andy Fletcher von Depeche Mode im Studio so machte, während der Rest der Band an Sounds tüftelte. Einstürzende Neubauten blev dannet i det daværende Vestberlin i 1980, da de to kunstnere Blixa Bargeld og N.U. Einheit og Mark Chung, skabt deres eksperimentelle og industrielle udtryk. Prikken over i'et var forsanger Blixa Bargelds karakteristiske vokal og hårrejsende skrig. Det var sågar også i de vilde 80'ere, at Einstürzende Neubauten forsøgte at rive Ungdomshuset ned, hvilket endte med et flækket øjenbryn og en tur på skadestuen for N.U. Unruh. "De var ekstreme i nogle år, og så begynder der at komme en anden form for kompositionsteknik indover, og så bliver musikken mere roligt i udtrykket," lyder det fra Klaus Lynggaard. 1977 skrev den då nästan femtioårige östtyske dramatikern Heiner Müller utifrån Shakespeares danske prins, pjäsen Hamletmaskinen - som gjorde succé och gav Müller en kultstatus i väst. Redan på tidigt 1960-tal hade Müller blivit utesluten ur DDR:s dramatikerförbund eftersom hans dramatik under åren gått från en socialrealistisk till en alltmer tvetydig stil. Att vara en maskin hade Müller tagit från Andy Warhol och i intervjuer antog han att pjäsen gillades i väst därför att den kombinerade två kända ting; Hamlet och maskin - som en reklamslogan.Müller reste runt i Europa och USA som en rockstjärna och med i sin ständiga cigarr, skinnjacka och svartbågade glasögon svarade han ironiskt och kryptiskt på intervjufrågor - att spela den tacksamme dissidenten låg inte för honom. This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the release of Einstürzende Neubauten's first official LP Kollaps. To celebrate, we are joined by none other than Blixa Bargeld. Blixa talks about the making of Kollaps, as well as some of his major influences. Einstürzende Neubauten ("Collapsing New Buildings") is a German experimental music group, originally formed in West Berlin in 1980. The group is currently composed of founder members Blixa Bargeld (lead vocals; guitar; keyboard) and NU Unruh (custom made instruments; percussion; vocals), long-time contributor Alexander Hacke (bass; vocals), plus Jochen Arbeit (guitar; vocals), and Rudolph Moser (custom-built instruments; percussion; vocals), who both joined the line-up in 1997. One of their trademarks is the use of custom-built instruments, predominantly made out of scrap metal and building tools, and noises, in addition to standard musical instruments. Their early albums were unremittingly harsh, with Bargeld's vocals shouted and screamed above a din of banging and scraping metal percussion. Subsequent recordings found the group's sound growing somewhat more conventional, yet still containing many unorthodox elements. With the release of its debut album “Kollaps” in November 1981, EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN declared war on all conventional listening habits. The album is actually an “inaudible” record; it is a frontal attack on expectations and ways of listening that has been blunted by mainstream sound. For lack of money, among other reasons, the range of instruments consisted of “found” and self-made objects, created from sheet metal and including drills, hammers, a “non-voice” that snatched shreds of German words from a text, and professional studio equipment, which was consistently used to undermine its actual technical purposes. This nonconformist mixture itself would become the foundation of a completely new understanding of music that would later influence countless artists, and would highly stylize the band's subsequent albums into milestones of the industrial scene. El protagonista de este monográfico de Ars Sonora es Dror Feiler, músico, artista y activista nacido en Tel Aviv en 1951. Casado con la artista Gunilla Sköld-Feiler, con quien ha colaborado en diferentes iniciativas, y a quien conoció en Suecia —país en el que ambos residen— cuando llegó desde Israel a mediados de los años setenta, Feiler estudió en diferentes instituciones de la capital escandinava, como Fylkingen, la Facultad de Musicología de la Universidad de Estocolmo y la Academia de Música de Estocolmo (donde tuvo como profesores de composición a Gunnar Bucht, Sven-David Sandström y a Brian Ferneyhough). Además de su labor compositiva, Feiler también es intérprete de saxofón (por ejemplo, en la banda de jazz Lokomotiv Konkret) y fundador de la orquesta Too Much Too Soon. Einstürzende Neubauten with Blixa Bargeld in conversation with David Eastaugh  On 1st April 1980, Einstürzende Neubauten made its first appearance, at the Moon Club in West Berlin. This first lineup featured Beate Bartel and Gudrun Gut, Blixa Bargeld, and N.U. Unruh. The two female members, Bartel and Gut, left the band after a short period and founded Mania D. Shortly thereafter, Alexander Hacke (alias Alexander von Borsig), a sound technician and multi-instrumentalist who was 15 years old at the time, joined the band and became a longtime member. In 1981, the percussionist F.M. Einheit  joined Einstürzende Neubauten and it released its first LP, Kollaps, a mixture of rough punk tunes and industrial noises. The industrial noises were obtained from self-made music machines, electronics, and found objects such as metal plates. The live performances with Einheit in the 1980s included lots of metal banging and destruction on stage.

In diesem Jahr feiert die Berliner Band Einstürzende Neubauten ihr 40-jähriges Jubiläum. Das neue Album „Alles in Allem“ klingt anders als frühe Werke nicht lärmig und bewusst an gängigen Hörgewohnheiten kratzend, sondern angenehm durchhörbar und dennoch intensiv. 100 Tage hat die Band im im Berliner Studio an den neuen Songs gearbeitet, die sich inhaltlich mit der Hauptstadt auseinandersetzen.

1985's "Halber Mensch" was a watershed moment for Einsturzende Neubauten, with the industrial legends expanding their creative vision beyond noise and performance to embrace composition and rich lyrical themes.
