Watch the Q&A session here: https://youtu.be/rKoYL4yrNsgDespite being cited as one of the most creative and influential guitarists of all time, and his tragically short life, Jimi Hendrix's playing and composing are yet to be fully analysed. This lecture will demystify his diverse influences and reveal the full range of his extraordinary invention in terms of sonic sculpting, rhythmic feel, fretboard navigation, harmony, and composition. We explore this dazzling creativity from his early playing as a sideman to the Isley Brothers, the Experience albums, the iconic Band of Gypsys project, to the tantalising promise of his ‘Electric Church' musical vision. This lecture was recorded by Milton Mermikides on 20th March 2025 at Rich Mix, London.Milton Mermikides is Gresham Professor of Music. He is Associate Professor in Music at the University of Surrey, Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music and Deputy Director of the International Guitar Research Centre. The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/just-ask-axis-jimi-hendrix-unpickedGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. Sound and music hold a strange and powerful role in film, TV and video games, aiding narrative and emotional impact. They can even exist in the world of ‘the film' – heard by the characters – or in the world of the audience. Music can even break the fourth wall, travelling through and blurring these conventionally separate worlds. By examining films through history from Blazing Saddles, Elf, The Truman Show to Birdman, we explore this ‘fantastical gap' and its transformative effect on the audience. This lecture was recorded by Milton Mermikides on 16th January 2025 at Rich Mix, London.Milton Mermikides is Gresham Professor of Music. He is Associate Professor in Music at the University of Surrey, Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music and Deputy Director of the International Guitar Research Centre. The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/sceen-musicGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. This is the recording of the discussion and some music following the screening of Fragments of a Dream at Rich Mix on 19 January 2023. Dr Francisco Dominguez talks to us about the current situation in Chile and what we can do to counter the various far right movements around the world and imperialism, musician Phaxsi Coca treats us to some entrancing live music and the film's co-directors tell us about their work, the Dream Lives On festival in Wales that celebrates Latin American music and peace in the spirit of Chilean activist Victor Jara. The screening was organised by Alborada - a magazine providing a progressive look at Latin American culture, arts and politics and their film arm, Alborada Films - and Movimientos, an organisation that hosts cultural and artistic Latin American events.
This is one of the longest interviews I have done and for good reason. A week & change before this recording, Apex Zero was in the centre of an amazing proof of concept day of exhibition & immersive performance with "Drummer Warrior Storyteller", a multi-format project that was five years in the making and is only the beginning.I was invited to the day of note at Rich Mix in the heart of Shoreditch to look at the exhibition which featured photography, painting, visuals, fashion & even blacksmithing that provided a prelude for a performance that contained rap/spoken word, dance, ritual and drumming. With all that said, I spoke to Apex Zero about all of the above; but also his beginnings, his battles, travels, past projects and - of course - his Top 5.AND, for the second time, this will drop with my own photography which you can peep here. Be sure to spin the short film "Drummer Warrior Storyteller" which also dropped today & the EP which you can find here.Rate & ReviewE-Mail: the5thelelmentpub@gmail.comTwitter: @The5thElementUK5E Community DiscordWebsite: www.the5thelement.org.uk/5epnIntro Music - "Baxter" By Brock BerriganChillHop MusicOther Podcasts Under The 5EPN:Diggin' In The Digits5EPN RadioBlack Women Watch...In Search of SauceThe Beauty Of Independence

In February 2019, Dash Arts' Café Destination Europe focused on questions of contemporary European identity, with Brexit as a backdrop. We brought together actors, writers and film directors from across Europe for a conversation. A year on, post the UK’s departure from the EU, these questions are just as pertinent. What does it mean to be European? And what does Europe mean for those who were born outside of it? We premiered short films by the phenomenal Swedish actress and filmmaker Bahar Pars and our Artistic Director, Josephine Burton, hosted a panel discussion with Bahar, alongside Nanna Blondell, who stars in one of Bahar's shorts; actor, writer and translator Houda Echouafni; and Tom Green of Counterpoints Arts.Recorded at Rich Mix.Live event supported by the Embassy of Sweden in London, and Rich Mix.Head to our website to watch Bahar Pars' films and find out more: http://www.dasharts.org.uk/podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Wild-haired rhythmical genius Seb Rochford, of jazz futurists Polar Bear, provides a heady juxtaposition of hip hop and shoegaze for the latest Clash DJ podcast. Polar Bear have been a continually experimental and innovative force in contemporary jazz, blending a punky ethos, electronica and rock riffing with traditional jazz ideas, frequently held together by Rochford’s incredible rhythms and dexterity. Starting off with some spacey ambience courtesy of fellow Polar Bear bandmate Leafcutter John, Youngs Teflon and Angel Gaze then verbally smack you around a bit before melting into the hazy tones of The Invisible. And so the cycle continues, with a blend of blissed-out instrumentals peppered with processed beats, Mozart and a dash of world music experimentation, before the relaxed rhyming of 2morrows Victory and Micachu’s ever-charming weirdness bring things to a close. Polar Bear play at Rich Mix, London, on December 15, where they will be performing material from their new album, scheduled for release next year. Seb Rochford tracklist 1.
