Ardern served as Prime Minister of New Zealand from 2017 to 2023, earning global admiration for her empathetic and decisive leadership through crises like the Christchurch attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic. Her trademark “be kind” approach redefined what modern political leadership could look like.In 2025, she released her memoir A Different Kind of Power, reflecting on how empathy can drive real progress. It's more than a political memoir, it's a profound insight into how it feels to lead.Since leaving office, Ardern has turned her focus to global initiatives on climate action, online safety, and compassionate leadership. In this final episode of the Changemakers series, Julia speaks with Lily and Melati, co-founders and co-leaders of their organisation, about what it really means to lead side by side. The two reflect on the months they've just spent on the Women Emerging Expedition, realising again and again how rare and valuable it is to have a partner in leadership when so many peers are walking a lonely road. They talk about the power of being “the same but different” similar enough to share a wavelength, different enough to bring out each other's strengths. Lily and Melati also explore the challenges of co-leading: how a close friendship can fuel vision, stamina, and creativity, but also complicate leading others, setting boundaries, and making hard calls. They share glimpses of their day-to-day rhythm from long hours in Bali to impromptu walks through new cities and how that rhythm builds a kind of “leadership soulmate” energy that keeps their mission alive. Listen to this episode to hear how friendship can make co-leading extraordinary and what it takes to keep that friendship strong while leading others. About the guests: Melati is a 24-year-old full-time changemaker and movement builder, and the founder of YOUTHTOPIA and Bye Bye Plastic Bags. She founded Bye Bye Plastic Bags at the age of 12, since then, Melati has spoken on world stages such as TED and the UN, she recently co-chaired the World Economic Forum GPAP committee, sat on the inaugural Expert Advisory Panel for the Earthshot Prize, and has had her film, Bigger Than Us, premiere at the 74th Cannes Film Festival 2021. Today, Melati launched her new company, YOUTHTOPIA, focusing on youth empowerment through short, meaningful peer to peer programs and providing them the tools they need to be changemakers. Her vision is to make YOUTHTOPIA the go-to platform for young changemakers. Lily is a 22-year-old Singaporean-Iranian changemaker and one of the Co-Founders of YOUTHTOPIA. Since its launch in 2020, YOUTHTOPIA has focused on youth empowerment through peer-to-peer programmes, providing students with the tools they need to be changemakers. Currently, Lily is also a senior at Yale-NUS College studying Global Affairs and Environmental Studies. In line with the values of YOUTHTOPIA, Lily is an active changemaker in her community who leads the Moulmein-Cairnhill Mentoring and Tutoring Programme for disadvantaged students in Singapore, and is heavily involved in grassroots voluntary work. Lily is also the youngest ever elected PAP Policy Forum Council member, and is a vocal advocate for youth-centric policies within the government.

Coral reefs generate $2.7 trillion a year by powering tourism economies, protecting coastlines from storms, and yielding medicines that fight infections and cancer. Yet 90% of the planet's coral reefs could be gone by 2050 – a loss that Sam Teicher describes as an “ecological tragedy and a socioeconomic catastrophe.” That's why he co-founded the reef restoration company Coral Vita. In this installment of the “FutureWork Playbook” series spotlighting clients on Forbes' “30 Under 30,” Sam explains to host Natalie Pierce that Coral Vita uses land-based farming to grow climate-resilient corals up to 50 times faster than nature. With a resume that includes winning Prince William's Earthshot Prize and raising $8 million to close a Series A—the first for a coral restoration company—Sam shares insights about combining cutting-edge science with commercial viability. “To live in a world where we need to restore coral reefs is a pretty strong indictment,” he observes, “and also a testament about what people are willing to do and innovate on and push forward in order to ensure we can continue having a thriving planet.”Episode HighlightsCoral reefs generate $2.7 trillion annually and support 25% of marine life, yet we've lost half since the 1970s and are on track to lose over 90% by 2050.Coral Vita's land-based farms use microfragmentation technology to grow corals 50 times faster than natural rates while stress-hardening them through controlled temperature variations to create climate-resilient coral populations. The company operates on three revenue pillars: vertically integrated farms that serve as tourism attractions, technology licensing to other restoration practitioners, and coral relocation services for coastal development projects with survival rates up to 98%.Sam's work involves predicting coral reproduction with precision timing—within 45- to 90-minute windows during full moon cycles—using red-filtered lights underwater to avoid disrupting lunar cues that trigger mass spawning events. With farms in the Bahamas and Saudi Arabia, Sam describes the financial and technical considerations that inform broadening his work to develop farms around the globe.

Circ was also a finalist for the Earthshot Prize, which each year awards £1 million to five winners for their environmental solutions.  The apparel sector is a significant source of global emissions, and Peter explains how Circ promotes circularity by recycling clothing. He says that a lot of the technical challenges around recycling have been solved, and unlocking financing is the challenge that keeps him awake at night.   “For the bankers to get involved, they want to see long-term commitments from the brands, and that's a muscle that just does not exist in this industry,” he says. “That's the biggest challenge.”  Listen to our coverage from Climate Week NYC here: Kicking off Climate Week NYC in a fragmented global landscape | S&P Global  We'll be back with podcast interviews from Climate Week NYC throughout the week — including our coverage from The Nest Climate Campus, where the All Things Sustainable podcast is an official media partner. Most companies have a mission statement. But few are truly mission-driven in practice. In this episode, Jason Fraser joins Ashok to unpack what it actually means to prioritize mission over profit — and how the best organizations are able to do both. Jason reflects on the differences between performative mission language and the kind of operational decision-making that aligns tightly with purpose. He shares the concept of “mission ratios” and how teams can use them to identify where they're constrained, where they have leverage, and how to get disproportionate outcomes from limited inputs. Drawing on examples from Patagonia, World Central Kitchen, and a federal asylum processing team, Jason walks through the tools and frameworks that mission-first leaders can use to improve focus, clarity, and measurable impact. Whether you're running a nonprofit, a B Corp, or just trying to do more meaningful work, this episode gives you language and direction to guide your team's decisions. Plus, Jason shares how to spot the ratios that matter most — and what to do once you find them. Two decades ago a group of NGOs came together with the government of Kazakhstan to save the dwindling population of saiga antelope living in the enormous Golden Steppe. Since then, the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative has successfully rehabilitated the saiga (Saiga tatarica) from a population of roughly 30,000 to nearly 4 million. For this effort, it was awarded the 2024 Earthshot Prize in the “protect & restore nature” category. Joining the podcast to discuss this achievement is Vera Voronova, executive director of the Association for the Conservation Biodiversity of Kazakhstan, an NGO involved in the initiative. Voronova details the cultural and technological methods used to bring the saiga back from the brink and to help restore this massive grassland ecosystem. “When [the] initiative [was] started, the saiga would be always like the flagship and the priority species because we did have this emergency case to recover saiga,” she says. “But the whole … picture of restoring the [steppe] was always behind this, and will be now a long term strategy.” Subscribe to or follow the Mongabay Newscast wherever you listen to podcasts, from Apple to Spotify, and you can also listen to all episodes here on the Mongabay website. Jeannette is joined by Amber Nuttall and Alistair Gosling all the way from COP29 in Azerbaijan to discuss their journey from launching the Extreme Sports channel to evolving their business into a platform focused on adventure, sustainability, and community engagement. Alistair shares insights on the entrepreneurial spirit driving change in the environmental sector, while Amber highlights the importance of amplifying diverse voices at COP29. KEY TAKEAWAYS The current emphasis is on environmental sustainability, with a strong belief that everyone can contribute to positive change. The goal is to inspire a broad audience to take action, highlighting the importance of collaboration and the need for "8 billion imperfect environmentalists." At COP29, the primary focus is on finance and the need for substantial investment in sustainability initiatives. The discussions aim to encourage governments to make impactful decisions that will shape the future of environmental efforts. There is a growing trend of entrepreneurs and innovative companies stepping up to address environmental challenges. Examples include sustainable brands gaining traction and initiatives like the Earthshot Prize recognising impactful organisations. We should encourage individuals and organisations to embrace bravery, boldness, and brilliance in their efforts to create a sustainable future, while also recognising the need for balance in addressing both climate and technological advancements. BEST MOMENTS "We inspired a good few million people around the world to go and get active, drive health, fitness, well-being through getting into adventure and extreme sports." "We need 8 billion imperfect environmentalists in the world today. We don't need a handful of perfect ones." "What I'm loving seeing is the entrepreneurial spirit shining through where entrepreneurs are taking advantage and really drilling into opportunities to change the dial." "It's very clear. It's finance. It's all about finance this year... we can only hope that our governments come together and make the right decisions around that."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Poland has some of the most toxic air in all of Europe, with 23 of the 50 most polluted cities in the European Union located in the country.Much of this air pollution comes from common household boilers that burn wood and coal. Emissions from cars and factories exacerbate poor air quality and lead to 40,000 deaths from pollution-related illnesses every year.Launched in 2015, Polish Smog Alert is a campaign group comprised of more than 50 local clean air initiatives dedicated to improving air quality in Poland. By increasing public awareness of the health impacts of air pollution and introducing anti-smog regulations at both the local and national levels, this movement has helped secure policy change that has improved air quality and public health across the country. In 2023, Polish Smog Alert was named an Earthshot Prize Finalist in the “Clean Our Air” category, and the group receives tailored support from the Prize's Global Alliance of partners to continue making a difference and driving urgent climate action. Our founder, Mike Bloomberg, serves as Global Advisor to the Winners of The Earthshot Prize, and Bloomberg Philanthropies – alongside Bloomberg LP – has supported The Earthshot Prize since its creation in 2020 as a Global Alliance Founding Partner. On this episode, Katherine Oliver sits down with Polish Smog Alert co-founders Anna Dworakowska and Andrzej Guła to discuss the group's mission to clean the air, their experience with The Earthshot Prize, the successes they have had so far, and where they will go from here.
