"The source field recording is combined with found sounds and field recordings made at a 1965 Hiroshima anti-nuclear protest, a 1968 Tokyo student protest, as well as street performances and 'happenings' presented between 1960 and 1970. "Tobata, an industrial port in southern Japan, was often the site of such demonstrations and protests, many of which were related to the Anpo struggle (安保闘争, Anpo tōsō). "One of the most infamous moments of the Anpo struggle was the 'Hagerty Incident', in which U.S. Ambassador to Japan Douglas MacArthur II (the nephew of the famous general) deliberately provoked an international incident by ordering his car to be driven into a large crowd of protesters. The provocation backfired and chaos ensued. "The right of people to gather and protest, celebrate, or commemorate is a fundamental right with cultural, political, and social significance. On this episode of the podcast, I speak with Simon Kennedy about his buzzy new book Against Worldview. It's a book that is provocative in the best way, especially for anyone who has used the phrase “Christian worldview,” in an educational context. It asks what we mean when we say worldview and whether the concept has been pressed beyond its usefulness. Among the topics we discuss: The ways that "worldview" can go wrong, especially when used as an organizing principle for Christian education. Why worldview can lead to "painting by the numbers" instead of the placing of tiles in a mosaic Why the biblical concept of "wisdom" may offer a better way forward, and why it is better to build towards worldview (inductively) than from it (deductively) Tensions in the concept of wisdom and whether there is a parallel to general vs. special revelation Whether the real problem is the modern push for uniformity Why Christian institutions need to double down on doctrine and catechesis, insisting that we look "at" what Christians believe and not just "through" the world view lens Get the book: https://lexhampress.com/product/305968/against-worldview-reimagining-christian-formation-as-growth-in-wisdom Justin's note: I wrote a review of this book for Christianity Today, and we bring up points of that review a few times during the podcast. The review is here: https://www.christianitytoday.com/2025/02/against-worldview-wisdom-simon-kennedy-abraham-kuyper-christian-education/

Is our obsession with "Christian worldview" hurting Christian education? Simon Kennedy brings the heat, arguing we've traded biblical wisdom for worldview warfare. He flips the script: instead of starting with worldview, true Christian education should pursue wisdom first. Kennedy digs into why this matters for teachers, parents, and anyone who cares about forming the next generation of Christian thinkers.

An Australian aid worker shot at while delivering aid to Gaza; Liberal candidate Simon Kennedy hopeful for a straightforward victory in the Cook by-election; And in AFL, Essendon bounce back with a runaway 29-point win over the Western Bulldogs.
The Liberal Party this week preselected its candidate for the safe seat of Cook – vacated by former Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Simon Kennedy is a management consultant. He doesn't currently live in Cook and ran unsuccessfully for the party in another seat at the last election. Still – he won a thumping majority when branch members voted on Monday night. Gwen Cherne – the only woman in the race ran a distant third – despite living on the border of the electorate, despite an impressive international CV and despite an endorsement from John Howard. So what happened? And is the Liberal Party doing enough to address the problems identified in its own review after the last election – when women turned against the Morrison Government?David Speers talks to Charlotte Mortlock, founder of Hilma's Network – which is trying to boost the number of women in the Coalition's parliamentary ranks – to find out why more women aren't being preselected in the Liberal Party.Insiders: On Background digs a little deeper into an issue that will be covered on the show each week with an expert to better understand the debates dominating politics.

——————— Voice as Drum as Protest ——————— The march or demonstration is an act of the collective. An act of a community united in protest. This act of protest is very often driven and sustained by sound. This sound is sometimes harsh and sometimes harmonious. Many demonstrations, such as the civil rights march at Selma, use song. Others use prayer, chants, instruments and electrification to make the noise of protest. All use the human voice, even when the protest is silent. ——————— The field recording documents a Finnish demonstration about Russian expansionist aggression. Finnish voices are raised in chants of protest. As an aside, it is worth noting that two of the oldest manmade instruments ever found, a drum and pipe dated to 40,000 years old, were discovered in territory that is now claimed as Finnish. The Sami drum and pipe instruments are still played today. The indigenous Sami people, who made and played the ancient drum and pipe instruments, still use these instruments to protest for their seasonal migratory rights and defend against inhibitions of movement imposed by Russian, Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian authorities. ——————— The sound work: voice as drum as protest This sound exploration uses the field recording of Finnish protest to create a unique set of drums that utilise rhythm, excitation and resonance. The polyrhythmic content of the Finnish protest was extracted from the chants of the MC and the marchers, as well as the collective applause and chatter of the crowd. The transient components of voices of protest become the sticks (the exciters) to beat the drums using the polyrhythms extracted from the recording. The drum skins (the resonators) are created from the pitch, tone and timbre of the sounds of protest. The sound piece begins with a number of individual drum sounds and rhythms. The sound piece concludes with a brief rhythmic study of the drums combined. Finnish protest reimagined by Simon Kennedy.

How should we expect persecution of Christians to begin in America? There won't be stake burinings or beheadings, at least not in the beginning. The initial stage of persecution will almost certainly be the elimination of constitutional rights for citizens who happen to be Christian followed by the societal designation of Christians as cultural undesirables. Unfortunately, it's already started. Simon Kennedy, “Australian territory attacks faith,” https://wng.org/opinions/australian-territory-attacks-faith-1691554178, August 9, 2023. The original Cities and Memory sample inspired the creation of this work about ship wreck. Telemetry gathered from ocean buoys at the location of a well documented 19th century ship wreck is used to ‘notate' the sound work, modulating parameters such as key, timbre, pitch, pan and velocity. Consider the telemetry as a field recording informing the creation of the work. This 20 minute version of Floß Fleisch Fluss is a shortened form of the sound work, without the spoken narration.* Floß Fleisch Fluss is a sound and spoken word prose poem, composed and written in seven scenes. The literal translation of the work title is Float Flesh Flux, but Floß more accurately translates as raft. Scenes include: Aground and abandoned Despair and delirium Paternoster prayer Mutiny and murder Cannibalism and contrition Devotion and death Rescue and resurrection Background It is estimated that since 1700 (when verifiable records were systematically kept by naval and merchant fleets) until the present day, three million people have died in maritime disasters.** A maritime disaster is defined as the loss of 20 or more lives. The very nature of a wrecked ship usually leads to catastrophic loss of life, more significantly so before lifeboats, flotation devices and sea rescue was professionalised in the 19th century. Telemetry Telemetry gathered from ocean buoys at the location of a well documented 19th century ship wreck is used to ‘notate' the sound work, modulating parameters such as key, timbre, pitch, pan and velocity. Telemetry data used for this work includes: wave height and period, barometric pressure, air and sea surface temperature as well as wind speed and direction. A fuller explanation of telemetry is below.*** Instrumentation Instrumentation used for this work includes field and found sound, voice, polytonal tubes and percussion, amplified cello, prepared piano, prepared guitar, no input mixer and modular synthesis. The original sample opens and closes the work and is included in various ways. Spectral analysis is used to parse sonic details, isolating timbral and tonal layers such as bird song, wind and waves. The sample is also used throughout the work as carrier signal, frequency modulator and convolution reverb source, working with the telemetry to control pan, pitch, timbre and other parameters such as key and chord progressions. ——————— * A selection of the prose poems are below. In the complete work their narration is interspersed with the sound pieces. ** Statistics on loss of life from maritime disasters is taken from the publication 'Shipwreck: A History of Disasters at Sea', author Dr. Sam Willis. *** Telemetry Telemetry is the automatic measurement and wireless transmission of data from remote sources, in this case from buoys gathering data in the ocean. Sensors at the source measure physical data such as temperature, pressure, height, amplitude, velocity and direction of ocean waves and weather. More information available at https://www.sofarocean.com/posts/the-use-of-buoys-in-the-ocean-and-what-weather-conditions-they-measure Below is a sample of data gathered at the location of a well documented 19th century ship wreck at 20:16 on 29 April 2023. This data gathered over several days and weeks provides several ‘wave form' modulation sources used in the sound work. 01° 23.7' N — 006° 38.1' E Wave Height 1.3m, 206.1° Wind 6kts, 213.5° Currents 0.8kts, 0.2° Pressure 1012.3mbar ——————— A selection of the prose poems. In the complete work their narration is interspersed with the sound pieces. Despair and delirium A lived fragment of feeling. Ten thousand unknown currents. An unspoken trust. A reflex action of the spirit. The muscular twitchings of a corpse. We cuttlefish camouflage the past. Is anything left then? Not a trace. Is the void profound? It enfolds the whole ocean. Soft tissues distend with ease. Helpless in extreme lightness. Like revelations, from the retort feelings begin to leach. Some cauterise themselves, stem the flow. The weak go mad, saying we can flex and grow. That weighted them down. They must not remember the streets in spring and canals in winter. Hold back the surge as it overwhelms. They come wearing shoes of salmon skin. One brings sunburn, another eschar for a surgery, a third makes obsidian blades, fingers white and numb. Take them, I don't need them now. On a warm Sunday in July we reach the Plashledge. Go then and seek asylum for your selfless love. ———————— Paternoster prayer The sun is frozen black. An eclipse like this happens once in 73 years I hope there will be no clouds. Held close to the flame, the candle soot blackens the glass. It is awful that things are like this. I should stay to tell you how it will be. The sun will drain away like zinc. It is overcast. There'll be no spectacle today. Is the sky clear? Yes. Dark cerulean in the east. Where are we going? To the edge of the raft? Lean against the mast. Hide from the wind. Is the sky really clear? Yes. Pale carmine now. It must be beautiful. I am glad you can see it. You are not lying? I can see the stars. It happens during an eclipse. Starlight in daytime. Phosphorine stars I cannot name. Awful that things are like this. I'll stay to tell you how it will be. Rain begins to fall. We wait together. Feel together. Lie together. Paternoster. ———————————— Mutiny Ganzfeld. The cessation of sound, a moment of stillness. An experimental action of which the outcome is unforeseen. Analysis of reality before its entry into existence. Lucent patterns without pulse or meter. The wayward son turns the sabre. The shaft cranks, the blade plays. Lefebvre swops dirty stories with Moreau. Le bruit de fond. Voice your suspicions. Is the intonation correct? The first howls multiply and thicken the effect. Colouring the signal to concentrate strong sensation. Rhythm quantised in serial tones. Amplifying waves, vibration and hertz. It haunts their tradition, without reaching the centre of our concerns. Violence expressed through instrumentation, dynamics and ornamentation. Articulation delivered by the performer's punch. Fearing a few false notes, they capitulate to barbarism. Mistaking a triad studded ‘dirty' for immoral atonality. Stimulus is maximised but rather unstructured. No matter how impossible the desire might be We agree that this pitch-black night cannot evade history. ———————————— Murder Inchoate. Milk fed, sour skin. Legs raise, head turns, trunk twists. Bare footfall. Confused crush, oily haste. Name spelled out in leaves of wild herb. What sacrifice the flower makes when a vacuum captures its essence at dusk. Substance from a scented shadow. Use your knife to harvest the sap. It is not always painless when the pneuma's soft. Not always painless. They call it easing the spring. Open the breech. As you reel. The piling swivel. A point of balance. The woollen must protects the sear. Fat runs. Bunt slick. Soaked in through our cheeks and chest. The thumb of amber resin burns. These flames resile then collide and unite. The spine breach splits with a jet of musk. The plash smelts scoriae to our skin. This will scar them. Like all other want, disease, ignorance, squalor and idleness We are convinced that this assault is a fraud. A sewer victory. ———————————— Cannibalism and contrition Under the trough of the naos. Full paps ooze. Never in their lives had the taste in their mouths been so bitter. Ill at ease. Eructate. Bilious. Emetic. The fleets salute as they embark. Sulphurous flume. Visceral pleasure. Lodging here, chambered there, embedded in crenelated pockets. We sucked and sluiced each other's limits. A bone broth rich with pulsing decay. A necessary easement yielding the leigh. They were finally laid low by the scourge within them. The infection protests ‘we are here because you were there.' Just as you have destroyed what was long before. So we slaughter the great to survive as the small. ———————— Devotion and death Bundled hull of raft floats five thwarts: Umibōzu's breath, Capricorn's hoof, Tiamat's eye, Morgawr's tongue, Ligeia's call. As these creatures emerge two sailors entwine their minds of salt. Ervan and Deniz seek haven for their love's retreat. Instead the sea buoys them to the bight of the dead. What songs they sing as their world becomes distant? Harmonies that scald throat, eye, lung and ear. Above, in night's forest without trees, many animals roam. Our sailors trust these beasts with their future. And like them the ocean takes the name of its parent. Bodies submerse in a bed of their making. Startled awake with new words and feelings. A scrimshaw scene falls from their hands. Ascribed ‘cette amour', our lovers drown before dawn. Birds in Bermuda reimagined by Simon Kennedy.

"A simple idea. Locate and have a conversation with a woman who was born in the late 1960s on or around the 12th of July in Belfast as the so called 'Troubles' began to escalate. I wanted to hear what that small girl thought, felt and experienced growing up in such a place. "I spoke with Mary*. Female, born 12 07 1968, raised Catholic and living just off the Falls Road in West Belfast. What Mary said about the trauma of childhood in Belfast was deeply affecting. "My intention was to use the recording of the conversation in the sound work. However, the individual chose to remain anonymous and did not want the interview used, expressing genuine concern that her family might be at risk from intimidation and violence if identified. Mary allowed for some of the conversation to be transcribed to provide context for the sound work. “'Born in '68, I grew up in Northern Ireland in the 1970s and ‘80s during the Troubles. We never celebrated my birthday. I never had party, it was just too dangerous. For myself, my parents, relations, friends and just about every other child or adult, daily life was punctuated with bomb attacks, incendiary devices, kidnappings, kneecappings, tar and featherings, murders and extrajudicial killings. All motivated in one way or another by sectarian division and hate. There was fear and conflict then and it continues to this day.' "'The sound track of my life was silence and then violence and then silence again.' "‘Troubles / Trioblóidí: Orange Disorder' sound work uses the original field recording of the Orange Order march, which takes place every year on the 12th of July in Belfast. The base sample is combined with found sound processed using an impulse response (IR) recorded at St Peter's Cathedral, located in the Divis Street area of the Falls Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland. "Please be aware there are sudden, loud reports in this work. Caution is advised when listening with headphones." * Not her real name Orange Day parade reimagined by Simon Kennedy.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is being heralded by some in the City as "a safe pair of hands" due in part to his resume: An MBA from Stanford University, a stint at Goldman Sachs and some time at The Children's Investment Fund. But while many finance professionals say they're appreciative of Sunak's moderate tone, some are worried their dream of a reformed, City of London 2.0 is dead.In this week's In the City, David and Francine speak to Bloomberg editors Katherine Griffiths and Tom Metcalf about Sunak's vision (such as it is) for the City, what his leadership means for a post-Brexit Britain and mounting concerns from banks about the possibility of higher taxes to keep the UK afloat.Plus, senior executive editor Simon Kennedy joins to discuss his discovery of a "Goldman globe." Since the end of 2005, there have only been about 48 hours in which an alumnus of the Wall Street giant didn't hold either the position of prime minister, finance minister, central bank chief or their equivalents in a G-7 country. For a daily look at the stories that matter in the UK, sign up now for our newsletter, The Readout with Allegra Stratton: https://www.bloomberg.com/account/newsletters/readoutAnd to figure out what all that means for your money--sign up for John Stepek's daily newsletter Money Distilled. https://www.bloomberg.com/account/newsletters/uk-wealth See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Japanese prefixes for words of negation, removal, absence and obsolescence. English equivalent prefixes include Ob De Ab Im Dis. Vocalisations for Japanese sounds of negation are drawn from the source sample and used in the work. ------------------ This piece is a lament for the Ainu, indigenous people of the islands surrounding the Sea of Okhotsk, now identified as part of the northern Japanese archipelago. The Ainu people settled these islands several thousand years before the arrival of the Yamato Japanese. For centuries, seudo-scientific racial ideologies, which included the false belief of the superiority of the Yamato character, marked the indigenous Ainu as “sub-human primitives”, making illegal their language, culture, right to gather and hunt. Eugenicist theories justified “racial improvements” to the indigenous population, with forced sterilisation and rape of Ainu women by “pureblood” minzoku. Male and female Ainu populations were separated, with males exiled to southern Japan to work as debentured slaves. As recently as 2020 the Japanese prime minister celebrated Japan as the world's oldest monoculture, negating further what limited visibility and rights the Ainu people may have in law.* As a consequence of systematic erasure by the Japanese, the Ainu language is one of the most critically endangered. There are only two fluent speakers left on earth. endangeredlanguages.com/lang/1212 ------------------ Technical notes The piece was recorded in a single take as a live improvisation using only the source sample. Vocalisations for the Japanese sounds of negation are drawn from the source sample and used in the performance. The work was made using Leafcutter John's Forester-2022. leafcutterjohn.com/forester-2022/ ------------------ *It is worth noting that until 1981 indigenous Australians were required to identify themselves on the national census as “Flora and Fauna” with no reference to their being human. "25 years and one generation on from the end of WWII, 1970 is the New Year Zero / Neue Jahr Null. In SFO the hippies get heroin and Haight became hate. Janis and Jimi OD, RIP. Israel, September 8: a month of plane hijacking begins, known as Black September. Three airliners are hijacked and blown up by Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. This is one instance in a year of terror. 70 terror groups are established in 1970, significantly more than any year before or since in the 20C*. In affluent West Germany the Red Army Faction is established (to be known informally as the Baader Meinhof Gang). Mesmerizing in its imagery and shot in 51 locations across the country, ASCENSION is a cinematic exploration of China's industrial supply chain that reveals the country's growing class divide through staggering observations of labor, consumerism and wealth. The film ascends through the levels of the capitalist structure: workers running factory production, the middle class selling to aspirational consumers, and the elites reveling in a new level of hedonistic enjoyment. In traveling up the rungs of China's social ladder, we see how each level supports and makes possible the next while recognizing the contemporary ‘Chinese Dream' remains an elusive fantasy for most. Producer Kira Simon-Kennedy and director / cinematographer / editor Jessica Kingdon joins us for a conversation on their collaboration and how a century old poem written by her Great Grandfather, Zheng Ze inspired her to make her illuminating and horrifying film about the massive industrialization of the world's largest industrial power. For news and updates go to: ascensiondocumentary.com MTV Documentary Films and XTR present the theatrical release of ASCENSION opening on LA October 8th at the Laemmle Monica and Laemmle Playhouse in Pasadena.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks. Australian comedian and writer Simon Kennedy has a personal connection to this day, as his mum Yvonne was one of 10 Australians to die during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. We thank Simon for taking the time to reflect on the last 20 years, and some of the lessons he's learnt along the way. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nepal traffic reimagined by Simon Kennedy. "The more than brilliant Dillon Bastan's Emit was used for the work. There is no processing at all other than slowing time by 4000%. This study is what I am calling a Ganzfeld audial experiment. Ganzfeld is a Gestalt term describing a phenomenon of perception caused by exposure to an unstructured, uniform stimulation field. The effect is the result of the brain amplifying neural noise in order to look for the missing visual (or audial) signals. If you have seen a James Turrell environmental installation then you'll get the idea of the Ganzfeld effect. Max Neuhaus is an artist whose sound work encourages the effect. Many composers (John Cage, Pauline Oliveros and Eliane Radigue) have worked with a form of composition that combines their spiritual (often Buddhist) practise with a sonic minimalism. Many academics refer to this work as requiring a focussed, reduced, deep, layered or quantum listening. This piece offers a mandala or quadrat to stimulate reflection. Katmandu lies in the valley known as the Nepal Mandala. A mandala is known, in some faiths, to represent the spiritual journey, starting from outside, venturing to the inner core, through transitional and increasingly enlightened layers. The mandala is a meditative simulacrum to be repeatedly contemplated to the point of saturation, such that the stimulus becomes fully internalised in even the minutest detail and can then be summoned and contemplated at will as clear and vivid. A mandala traditionally has four gates. This quadrat imagines four gatekeepers offering wayfinding to, perhaps, a spiritual meditation on the four stages to enlightenment. Or the four deracinating stages of culture shock: disorientation, negotiation, adjustment and assimilation (or, often, revulsion). Maybe we follow the path from simulacra to simulation when we realise we do not experience a faithful image or copy of a place but a perversion in which our experience has no relationship to any reality or place whatsoever. The final gatekeeper suggests we reflect on the environmental and ecological consequences of our journey and our impact on this place: creation-germination; croissance-augmentation; existence and division; degradation, collapse and extinction."

Welcome to the Dead Dads Society. The therapy group in the form of a podcast. We have a brilliant episode this week our guest is comedian, author, TV host and voice over guru Simon Kennedy. A member of the DDS having lost his Dad at a young age, Simon also unfortunately lost his mother in the September 11 attacks. We go really deep into the tragedy of 9/11. From the initial news, to the dreaded confirmation and the post 9/11 world for Simon and his family. Having journalists camped outside his house, asking questions of funeral homes you regret getting the answer to and years later learning about his mother's final moments. It's an emotional ride and I'm so glad Simon was willing to chat so openly about a difficult topic. For teenage Nola (Sabrina Carpenter), home is the open road. Her self-reliant father (Steven Ogg) is her anchor in a life of transience. The pair crisscross the United States in a lovingly refurbished RV, relishing their independence and making ends meet by doing odd jobs. A shocking rupture, though, casts Nola out on her own. She makes her way to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in search of a mother she never knew. When her motorhome unexpectedly breaks down, she forges a bond with an auto body shop owner (Danny Trejo), and senses the possibility of mooring her ship in this storm. On this episode, we are joined by writer/director Ani Kennedy-Simon, producer and DP, Cailin Yatsko and producer, Kishori Rajan to discuss the film's development from IFP Week to the Tribeca Film Festival, and now, to pivoting the launch of the film during times of quarantine. The film brings to light themes around consumption, spending and minimalism and is a beautiful portrait of a community that is growing in popularity here in the United States. Also in this episode, #WCW - Women Crushing It Wednesday features Boston based Nicky Bandera!! Nicky is a restaurant, food & beverage professional, who at time with so much worry and stress wanted to give her service industry communities one less thing to worry about— dinner. She wanted to spread a little bit of joy during a time that is not that joyful. So, she started cooking. Cooking the lasagna that she makes on Easter for her family— from scratch with homemade sauce. To date, her team of volunteers and her have made and delivered over 1,000 lasagna dinners to out of work Massachusetts and RI Waitstaff, bartenders, dishwashers, hosts, owners, undocumented workers, Djs and drag performer industry professionals. For the last 13 weeks they have been focused on putting dinner on the table for the out of work MA Boston service industry, but this week they are shifting our focus. For the first time, the famous Project Paulie lasagna will be available for purchase with 100% of the proceeds going to The Loveland Foundation and Color of Change. The actor Will Patton ("Armageddon", "No Way Out") is in a new suspense thriller called "Hammer". The filmmaker Ani Simon-Kennedy's indie drama "The Short History of the Long Road' also makes an appearance. Both films are available for streaming and on demand.
Ani's @animakesmovies second feature film The Short History of the Long Road comes out today in drive-ins across the US. Monday is the digital premiere with a live Q+A. Tuesday it's streaming everywhere. We talk releasing a film in this context, the landscape of diversity initiatives, working with Sabina Carpenter, a major celebrity playing against type, and the contemporary pathways for filmmakers. It was cool being able to capture this moment for Ani, as releasing a film is emotional always, but right now is unprecedented. She's remarkably cool and calm. I suspect this has something to do with running a commercial production company responsible for over 300 spots over the last 8 years. There’s little debate that Covid-19 has crushed economies and triggered government rescue efforts not seen in modern times. On this week’s episode, World Bank Chief Economist Carmen Reinhart and fellow Harvard professor Kenneth Rogoff, authors of “This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly,” discuss what comes next with Bloomberg Economics executive editor Simon Kennedy. The depth of the U.S. recession isn’t the only way in which this time is different. While tens of millions are newly unemployed or working fewer hours, new pandemic-adjacent occupations are emerging. Host Stephanie Flanders talks with Bloomberg global business reporter Jeff Green about these new jobs, such as contract tracer and thermal scanner.

Welcome to a new year, a new decade, and a brand new disco set, with over three hours of dance-floor classics; disco originals, remixes, edits and more. Every time I hear "I love music" by the O'Jays I get goosebumps - the arrangement, the vocal harmonies and the percussion are just perfect. And did Chicago - ranked by Billboard as one of the biggest rock bands of all time - imagine they'd spawn a host of disco choons with their funky horn section? (Here it is "On my mind" by - Algrthm). Apparently it's a Barry White sample that makes Future Funk's "Wildberry Tracks" so sublime, and Barry himself is up later with a re-edit of his Love Unlimited Orchestra classic. Kool & the Gang pop up a few times in this mix, as does Michael Jackson. Kudos to Dr Packer, The Reflex, Sasha Mitich (Mitiko) and Young Pulse for their great edits and re-creations. And what disco set would be complete without some Salsoul? Then there's Quincy Jones. 'Nuff said. All mixed with love in London. Movie Meltdown - Episode 500 This week we round-out our coverage of Flyover Film Fest as we sit down and talk with director Ani Simon-Kennedy about her life as a filmmaker as well as her latest movie The Short History of the Long Road. And as we decide if we’re going to live off the grid, we also address… Sabrina Carpenter, Bad Times at the El Royale, Straight to Hell, Wes Anderson, one of the directors of the Tribeca Film Festival, Darius Khondji, shifting landscape of how people watch movies, van dwelling, wonderful memories of small theaters and renting movies at the video store, Days of Gray, gigantic corporation with social justice cause with celebrity, my most addictive vice, Mark Friedberg, tonal music, the magician's assistant, the great equalizer, how to manipulate people, Joe Strummer, saved up all my babysitting money, Fantastic Mr. Fox, a punk rock spaghetti western, Midnight in Paris, so many middlemen in the advertising industry, Cynthia Erivo, just the way she was able to think on her feet… was so much like the character, need people to be there, Chris Hemsworth, flexing those muscles, Girl Meets World, the detail built into the set design, how much that makes you into such a chameleon, all they do is drink coffee, would make these little shorts… and I was kind of the director by default, my favorite thing is a weird cult, Alex Cox, The Hate U Give, Woody Allen, would yell at me because I wouldn't rewind VHS tapes, playlists for characters, production designer, crafting a capable character, in the art department, digital nomads and a post-apocalyptic silent film in Iceland. “...you know, I mean, it’s an indie movie and it’s about this very specific world, and we wanted to stay true to that… and Sabrina was like - all in!” For more on Ani’s movie, go to: https://www.shorthistorylongroad.com/ And for more information on “Flyover Film Fest”, go to: https://www.louisvillefilmsociety.org/

Simon Kennedy and I were recently doing a run of gigs together in the NSW Ski Fields. We found time between, staring at the walls of hotel rooms and searching for coffee and phone signal to record a podcast. Simon is a comedian, author, voice over artist and all-round good guy.
Today's guest saw a gap in the market and found a way to fill it. Children's songs on Youtube attracted a lot of hits, but weren't necessarily the most compelling watching. So, he bought a green screen, gathered some mates and put together Songs With Simon. It's fun for kids with something for the grown-ups, too, and eight million hits later, it seems to be going pretty well. As we discover, this is only one step in the creative journey of Simon, which includes being in a band, filming a movie and writing screenplays. Cam Want, the Mayor of the Want Family, also joins Luke and Susie for Knights of the Round Table, where they explore the continuing success of reality tv and irrational fears.
