Sarathy Korwar, Nwando Ebizie, Sandunes and Abel Selaocoe discuss diversifying the classical music space, balancing capitalistic forces with creativity, and creating space in which to disappear. Sarathy Korwar is a composer and percussionist whose music combines jazz, Indian classical, Indian folk and electronic influences. His latest record, KALAK, explores what the past, present and future are, and how they interact. Nwando Ebizie is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work combines music, performance art and ritualistic dance from the African diaspora. She has released music under the alter ego Lady Vendredi, who she describes as a time-travelling pop star from another dimension. Sanaya Ardeshir, AKA Sandunes, is a composer, producer and pianist from Mumbai, India, who incorporates elements of dance and jazz to create something wholly unique. She describes her sound as rhythmic meditations on the future of pop and electronic music. Abel Selaocoe is a South African cellist and singer whose work blends everything from African dance rhythms to 18th-Century sonatas. His latest record, Where Is Home, wanders through his musical life so far, which sees him beatboxing a song about his nephew and singing counter melodies taught to him by his mother.

There's a heavy antipodean influence on this week's Independent Music Podcast, with a whole heap of wonderfully varied sounds with their roots in Oceania. From the stunning experimental folk of Maxine Funke, to the beautiful pop of Carla Dal Forno, through to ‘horrible metal from YANWYTYA, there's a broad spectrum of noise. Elsewhere, Sarathy Korwar's new record gets us off to a strong start, whilst the intercontinental drones and poetry of Karen & Peter transports us to the dusky landscapes of West Yorkshire and upstate New York. For the patrons we also have underground experimental hip-hop, crazy obtuse pop from Japan's Hitomi Moriwaki, and more. This week's trawl through the megahertz throws up some sizzling summer dance floor heat from Ireland, Germany and New Zealand. First up is the collaboration between Icelandic queen Mr Silla and uncrowned Irish electronica king New Jackson. Five years in the making, Holding On was worth the wait. DJ Koze's sound-clash with Sophia Kennedy is equally intoxicating as is the latest release from Eden Burns who has been making banging boom tunes from his bedroom on the South Island of New Zealand for the past few years. There's further evidence of why London remains a hotspot of musical endeavour and adventure via some captivating new electronic sounds from GAIKA and Ivy Lab as well as a pair of deeply soulful releases from new jazz pioneers Sons of Kemet and Sarathy Korwar. The simplicity and beautiful mysteries at the heart of Kareem Ali's productions from Phoenix, Arizona are another topic of discussion. We also visit Belfast for a listen to the freshest offerings yet from prolific producer Cbakl and the Glass Craic label. Professor Nandini Das and Preti Taneja introduce us to the TIDE project, which asks how mobility in the great age of travel and discovery shaped English perceptions of human identity based on cultural identification and difference. We hear in particular about the project's creative work, which culminated in an online Salon responding to and transforming the research. We discuss the boundaries and boundary-crossing of the project and the histories it studies, the cultural silencing and 'invisible debate' of the history of Empire in modern Britain, and the ways in which race and racism are used to internalise concepts of who does and doesn't matter. The TIDE project is doing fantastic work to transform the teaching of the history of migration in schools, producing learning packs and other resources, as well as open-access research tools such as a series of Keywords which show the different stories a word can be used to tell. Preti and Nandini show us that it is possible to 'worry against the root's of a word's historical meaning in order to 'make another language'. This film includes footage of the Salon, created by Preti Taneja, Ben Crowe, Sweety Kapoor, Steve Chandra Savale, Sarathy Korwar, Shama Rahman, Ms. Mohammed, Sanah Ahsan and Zia Ahmed. For more on this fantastic project, see: http://www.tideproject.uk https://www.tideproject.uk/tide-salon/
Jazz musician Sarathy Korwar talks to Nadine Shah, James Holden and Nubya Garcia about whether there is something inherently dysfunctional about being a performer, relationships with their voice or instruments, and what it means to control and own your own music. Sarathy Korwar was born in the US, grew up in Chennai and Ahmedabad in India before moving to London. He’s a percussionist, drummer, producer, and bandleader who’s at the forefront of the jazz world right now, using both modern methods and pulling resources from his classical roots. Joining him is the formidable singer-songwriter Nadine Shah. Her 2017 album Holiday Destination was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and her most recent record, 2020’s Kitchen Sink, arrived to huge acclaim. Her sound has been described as everything from "loner pop" to "jazz meets indie". James Holden is an electronic pioneer who’s revered by musicians and fans alike. He now runs his own label, has made a soundtrack, and performs improvised synth music in his ‘spiritual-synth-jazz-trance’ band The Animal Spirits. And finally, Nubya Garcia is a saxophonist, composer and bandleader. As well as being one of the most important musicians in the UK right now, her long awaited debut record Source was released in the summer of 2020. She also plays in the bands Nérija and Maisha with some of the UK’s finest musicians.
A fantastic hour of new music this week, although the highlight could well be the sublime cut of Eswatini and South African music from 1989 that's had a reissue on France's Nyami Nyami label. Music Life is led this week by percussionist and producer Sarathy Korwar. He was born in the US and grew up in Ahmedabad and Chennai in India, and began playing tabla at the age of 10. His album More Arriving was released last year; featuring rappers from Mumbai and New Delhi, it was described as “an honest reflection of [the] experience of being an Indian in Britain”. Joining him is the American violinist, author, and entrepreneur Damien Escobar from New York; Irish, by way of Sierra Leone, future-Afro soul vocalist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Fehdah; and percussionist Osman Gerein, who plays with The Scorpios, of whom several members are originally from Central Sudan but are now based in the UK after fleeing the fundamentalist takeover in that region. They’ll be finding common ground in the music they make by discussing relationships with their instruments, how much they need to practice, whether audiences look like them, and what rituals they go through to perform.
The 2020 edition of the Winter JazzFest has just begun. This week we feature music by some of the most interesting bands from out of town who will be at the JazzFest, and new or unreleased material that will performed on the stages of the JazzFest. Of special interest yet-to-be-released material by Ted Poor, Kevin Eubanks & Orrin Evans and a unique reimagining of the work of Gil Scott Heron by Makaya McCraven, and musicians from the British, French and Italian scenes. The playlist also features Nduduzo Makhathini, Kokoroko, MAE.SUN, Dominique Fils-Aimé (pictured), Anne Paceo, Tin Men and the Telephone, Sarathy Korwar, Uri Caine, Ron Artis II, Thomas de Pourquery, Jaimie Branch, Naassam Jalal, Sara Schoenbeck, Tommaso Cappellato, PLUME, Tineke Postma (pictured), Jonathan Jurion, and the EYM Trio. Diaspora is Whitechapel, Bradford, Southall, Wilmslow Road and Alum Rock; diaspora is the memes we share, the turns of phrases we use, the languages we speak and don’t speak. Listen back to an excerpt taken from Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan's brand new performance piece on a world beyond origins. At a time when nation states throughout the West are struggling to make sense of their diasporic populations and defining them as ‘other’, where the rhetoric of ‘go back to where you came from’ echoes across the globe, this explosive new performance piece from poet Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khoon, with live percussion from Sarathy Korwar, reminds us that diasporas are irrevocably rooted in – and inseparable from – the places that we live in. @freewordcentre #WritingOurWayHome freeword.org
We love doing the Major Scale because it's a great opportunity to work with brilliant artists of today and tomorrow, as well as the some of our heroes from the past. In this episode we get both: Sarathy Korwar and Steve Kuhn. There's a renaissance happening in jazz worldwide, and drummer Sarathy Korwar is one of the leading voices in the UK. Within a year he's offered us two brilliant releases in My East Is Your West and More Arriving. The first, as the title suggests, is an Eastern take on a selection of overlooked Western tunes by the likes of Joe Henderson, Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim, Don Cherry, plus more. The second will make you stop in your tracks – a song cycle of nu-skool jazz plugged through the outlet of dance electronica and a collection of poets, griots, and MCs from India's growing music scene. The result is a joyful and socially aware noise. Steve Kuhn has been a leading voice since he arrived on the scene in early 1960s. Whether in his own prolific output or his numerous collaborations as an accompanist for the likes of Coltrane, Getz, and Oliver Nelson, it's no argument that Kuhn is one of the greats. Blessed with a gift for the melodic and an adventurous command of the piano, you can't help but picture his fingers dance in delight across the keyboard when listening to one of his compositions. As to be expected, his latest album, To And From The Heart, is stunning in effect and sadly may be his last!! Kuhn put some time aside to talk about it with us. ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar. Produced in Central Florida, this program seeks to become one of the defining voices of this Native American art form, and everything else that finds itself under it's umbrella. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between. Welcome to the show today where we have an exclusive pre-release from percussionist Sarathy Korwar. The top track and FTBOTRB Recommendation features signature Indian-influenced beats with Londonesque vocals over the top by Zia Ahmed. It's a banger of a track so let's spin up the show and get cracking. You'll learn more about Sarathy Korwar later on. If you, like us, hate commercial music then you are in the right place. We've got musical conversation and also New Music from Tobin as usual, which is more than likely divisive. This week's New Music is certainly a nod back to 80's cinematography and gets us remembering back to some high fashion. The Shiftless Rounders provide the bookend this week with beautiful mountain harmonies, exquisite resonator guitar work and a clarinet! An unusual pairing for sure but listen on to hear how good a pairing it really is. The bookend at the bottom of the show is also a live performance from The Shiftless Rounders (unusual name there) which showcases brilliantly their guitar mastery. Following their slightly jazzy, rag-time sound comes Jolie Holland with a similarly old-fashioned song dripping with nostalgia. Tobin reacquaints himself with his own prophecy that the US doesn't do indie very well and finds that he may actually be wrong. Lord Huron are the ones doing the damage to Tobin as he reevaluates his position on US indie. And last but far from least is Ivy-Jane Browne bringing up the rear. Let's dive straight in.
On the show this week we move between Japanese folk music, post-punk and modern classical, interspersed with some musique concrete from Cote D'ivoire and abrasive power electronics from Italy. The new Anna Meredith is a real highlight, as is the latest single from Sarathy Korwar's magnificent new LP. Elsewhere there's the latest from the label formerly known as Tobago Tracks, a welcome return for Bobby Krlic (AKA The Haxan Cloak) and much more. Tracklisting aircode - You Broke Down Into Four and a Half Pieces (TT, UK) Dry Cleaning - Magic of Meghan (self-release, UK) Mireille Kyrou - Étude 1 (Nostalgie de la Boue, Cote D'ivoire) Sarathy Korwar - Bol (The Leaf Label, UK) Ya Mai Mo - Mori No Fushigi (White Paddy Mountain, Japan) Anna Meredith - Paramour (Moshi Moshi Records, UK) Sexy Crocodile for Dinner - Interferenza Distruttiva (Sputo Records, Italy) Bobby Krlic - Gassed (Milan Records, USA) Mai Mai Mai - Magia Lucana (La Tempsta International, Italy) Seabuckthorn - Premonition (self-release, UK) Produced and Edited by Nick McCorriston. Metronomy are back in a welcome return to form. They've given us a banger of a track in the unlikely combination of Salted Caramel Ice Cream. It's a teaser track off of the forthcoming album which is due out in September 2019. If the teaser is anything to go by, the LP is likely to be be up there with the 2011 LP The English Riviera in its greatness. Metronomy have appeared before on FTBOTRB - go take a listen. As usual the menu extends further than just ice cream this week, with a Listener Recommendation inspired bookend from Lissie Trullie. Get your headphones on and dive straight in. To compliment Salted Caramel Ice Cream the guitar excellence of Randy Lorenzo gives some sumptuous summery vibes as he guides us around the lush tropical paradise of Hawaii. Hello to all our listeners in Hawaii. Tobin brings Soft Walls back into the studio for a play of what is possibly their standout track from the LP No Time. The whole album constitutes a Record Box Recommendation in fact - it's essential listening. Finally, we're treating you to a Double Record Box Classic this week. We discuss what must arguably one of the greatest LP cover artworks of all time. Tobin admits that he has never been voted one of the world's most beautiful people by People magazine and ends up slating the track. We play 2 great tracks from Thin Lizzy and Fine Young Cannibals. Of course Tobin is wrong about the quite wonderful Roland Gift but we'll let you make up your own minds. The track features Zia Ahmed and is a clever and thought provoking dig at colonialism and its wider reach. Join us as we broadcast at 23:00GMT July 20th.
Sarathy Korwar talks to Pete Paphides about the explosive synergy of influences that inform his brilliant new album, to be released on July 26th. Inspired by Indian classical music, Sufi devotionals, modern jazz and the nascent rap scenes of Mumbai and New Delhi, More Arriving is one of the most thrilling records of 2019, drawing on a range of guest artists to create a frequently breathtaking sonic document of these febrile times. Set 1 – Sofa TSet 2 – Bwoy De BhajanSet 3 – Eloq

In this special edition of the Ninja Tune podcast, Throwing Shade chats to Sarathy Korwar, whose debut album "Day To Day" was released in July this year via Ninja Tune in collaboration with The Steve Reid Foundation. They discuss the recording of the album, touring with Kamasi Washington and their shared experiences studying at the London School of Oriental and African Studies. Along the way we hear music that has influenced and inspired Sarathy over the years - from The Doors, Dawn Of Midi, Jaimeo Brown, Rashid Khan, and The Necks - in addition to some of his own productions. Sharath Narayn a.k.a. Cosmic Attic keeps it current on Mix #112 with a bright, forward-thinking range of RnB, electronica and hip-hop. The first time we saw Sharath Narayan was in Chennai with his alt-rock band, and only project at the time - Black Letters. Since then, he’s launched his solo venture Cosmic Attic with an impressive debut EP, titled ‘Climb’ (reviewed here) and live performances acorss the country. The 24 year old producer/DJ has also recently been selected to participate in the third edition of the Kyta residency program in Kalga. Sharath’s unique, pop-influenced sound is marked by dreamy, layered synths and crisp beats peppered with field recordings taken in his current bustling habitat of Mumbai. ‘Climb’ was released as a free DL on Bandcamp, and caught our eye for its evocative vocals and vibrant, pop-influenced melodies. This one’s worth keeping an eye on. For his Wild City mix, Narayan delivers an easygoing selection of some of the more progressive RnB, hip-hop and electronica released in the last couple of years. #112 begins with a mash-up of Mndsgn’s ‘Bed’ and ‘Indefinite Leave To Remain’ by Ninja Tune’s newest prodigy Sarathy Korwar before moving on to the smooth, groove laden tunes of Kaytranada, Taylor McFerrin and Bibio. It’s also got a heady dose of rap and hip-hop beat from K. Dot, Samiyam, Clams Casino, Clipping and more. The mix ends with Cosmic Attic’s own interpretation of Shigeto’s ‘Ritual Howl’. This is the perfect mix to play at an unhurried, laid-back evening at home with just the right number of people. As is to be expected from two avid music collectors, we are treated along the way with an eclectic selection of tracks, taking in music from The Roots, Breakout, Pete Dunaway, Underground Resistance and Creative Source. We finish with some new music from the Ninja Tune stables with tracks from Space Dimension Controller, Machinedrum, The Invisible, The Bug and Sarathy Korwar.
There's nothing like completely transforming an Abba track for your first music in six years, but that's what Portishead have done with SOS. We've also got self-released sounds from Map71 and GAIKA, alongside two new ones being released by the on-form Soundway Records - the mesmerising Family Atlantica and the acid folk of Vanishing Twin. Elsewhere we have new jazz from Sarathy Korwar through Ninja Tune, Belgian duo Tav Exotic via Vlek, DVA on Hyperdub, Brandt Brauer Frick on !K7, and Newcastle's phonetic s
