C'est une semaine spéciale festival printaniers qui s'ouvre sur Tsugi Radio puisque demain on évoquera, Panoramas, le festival de Morlaix, mercredi, Biches Festival… mais aujourd'hui, après vous avoir parlé depuis plusieurs mois des Inouïs, il est grand temps qu'on vous parle du Printemps de Bourges Crédit Mutuel, car comme chaque année nous avons rendez-vous au bord de l'Auron du 15 au 19 avril. Barbara Pravi, Clara Luciani, Lucky Love, Miki, Piche, Yoa, Fatboy Slim, Malik Djoudi, Sophye Soliveau, Last Train, Jeanne Cherhal… Le Printemps creuse comme chaque année sa singularité en étant à l'affût de toutes celles et ceux qui font vibrer la musique en France. Depuis plusieurs années, Bourges met l'accent sur les créations, des spectacles uniques qui mettent un lumière un répertoire, un ou une artiste, une scène. Entre Vers les lueurs, les concerts acoustiques du Palais Jacques Cœur avec Yaël Naïm, Rover ou Emily Loizeau, l'hommage au cultissime Köln Concert de Keith Jarret par Édouard Ferlet, ou Toute première fois, une création qui vient célébrer les 40 ans des Inouïs orchestrée par Terrenoire… Mais la création qui va nous intéresser aujourd'hui c'est l'hommage à l'Astre d'Orient, la diva égyptienne, Oum Kalthoum disparue en 1975. Difficile de se représenter l'aura de cette grande chanteuse née au tournant du 20ème siècle. Pour vous donner une idée, ils étaient plusieurs millions, entre 3 et 5 selon les sources, à suivre son cortège pour des obsèques forcément nationales, immortalisées par le grand cinéaste, Youssef Chahine. Tous les premiers jeudi du mois, ses nouveaux morceaux étaient jouées à la radio nationale, et la vie s'arrêtait en Égypte, car tout le monde était collé à son transistor. L'histoire d'Oum Kalthoum, c'est celle de la fille d'un imam modeste d'une petite ville du Delta du Nil qui est devenue aussi puissante qu'un chef d'état, dans une époque où l'Égypte était le phare culturel du Moyen-Orient. Les anecdotes qui viennent émailler la vie de cette star pas comme les autres sont toutes plus stupéfiantes les unes que les autres, nous allons tenter d'en raconter quelques-unes… Dans Place des Fêtes aujourd'hui, nous avons aussi rendez-vous dans l'espace littéraire avec notre libraire Nicolas Jalageas, mais d'abord, avec le musicien libanais Zeid Hamdan et la chanteuse, Natacha Atlas, on parle de La Voix des Femmes, la création hommage à Oum Kalthoum qui aura lieu le jeudi 17 avril à la maison de la culture de Bourges.

Jason Singh is a sound artist, producer and performer. His creative output is an exploration of the natural world, voice and a wide range of music technologies. Works include live performance, immersive installations, studio recordings, broadcasts and sound walks. In this show he talks about how he makes music using the MIDI Sprout interface, a device that senses the electrical voltage of plants and converts it into MIDI information. This programme is a small sample of the great music from North Africa. My selection includes traditional and modern music. The exotic sounds of North African music and its hypnotic rhythms have attracted some famous Western rock musicians. Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones in 1968 found trance music in Morocco with The Master Musicians of Jajouka so powerful that he recorded a live album presented to the world as Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka. In my selection, there is a piece of the Master Musicians of Jajouka. This time was recorded by the British producer Talvin Singh in 2000. Their style of music is of Sufi tradition and it has a trance quality. Same with the Gnawa music from Sahara. Mahmoud Guinia was a celebrated star of this genre. From the desert too is Tinariwen (Algeria/Mali), the Tuareg band with extraordinary links to the blues music. From Argel is the superstar of Rai music Khaled. France is a country that has an important music community of the Algerian diaspora such as Gnawa Diffusion and the recently deceased Rachid Taha. Another extraordinary band from Morocco that you can listen to is Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects, one of the most avant-garde North African bands. They used technology and modern Western sounds for the purpose of their indigenous music, not the other way around to adapt to Western music by smothering their productions. Underher is AKA for Khaled Bess, a Tunisian/Canadian successful electronic producer. His productions are very representative of electronic music with melancholic tone. I don't usually repeat music I have played in previous shows or mixes. One of the exceptions is the very catchy and feeling-good song Ayonha by Libyan (and resident in Egypt) songwriter of Arabic Pop Hamid El Shaeri. Natacha Atlas is part of the North African diaspora (British/Egyptian). She is a prominent figure in the British World music scene. Amine Bouhafa is also part of the North African music diaspora. He is Tunisian but residing in France. Bouhafa is one of the most successful young film music composers who won a prestigious international award with the soundtrack of Timbuktu. I hope this selection whets your appetite to learn about this fascinating music. Notre premier invité est Gérard Kurkdjian : auteur - musicien - conférencier - directeur artistique qui vient de publier « Raga de Nuit », aux éditions Spinelle.D'origine arménienne et passionné des traditions orientales, Gérard Kurkdjian mène depuis vingt-cinq ans une carrière de musicien, de directeur artistique et de producteur. Il a été le directeur artistique de nombreux festivals de musiques du monde dont le festival des Musiques du monde d'Erevan en Arménie et, au Maroc, le Festival de Fès des Musiques Sacrées du Monde, dont il a été l'un des co-fondateurs et le directeur artistique depuis sa création en 1994 jusqu'en 2009.Gérard Kurkdjian est également musicien, initiateur de créations où poésies et textes des grandes voies mystiques s'entrecroisent avec les traditions musicales d'Occident et d'Orient, (Caravanes de Lunes - La Nuit Suprême - L'Oraison Funèbre d'Henriette d'Angleterre -  L'Oiseau de Feu - Voyageurs Mystiques - Les Fleurs du Mal - Shruti - Les Chants d'Isis, Eau de Vie), auteur, conférencier, récitant, producteur d'émissions de radio, organisateur de colloques : l'ensemble du travail de Gérard Kurkdjian est centré sur une vision œcuménique et transversale des arts et des cultures de la planète.  Spécialiste reconnu des musiques sacrées du monde, il a crée et dirigé plusieurs festivals de musiques. Il est l'un des fondateurs du Festival de Fès des Musiques Sacrées du Monde dont il a été le directeur artistique de sa création en 1994 à 2009. Auteur du « Grand Livre des Musiques Sacrées du Monde », premier ouvrage rassemblant en un seul volume et sous une seule plume l'ensemble des traditions des musiques sacrées, il a publié, « Méditation Musicale : comment méditer avec les plus belles musiques du monde ». Outre une réflexion générale sur la nature de la musique et sa place dans notre société, il y a conçu une forme de méditation tout à fait originale, dans laquelle l'écoute purement contemplative des musiques de la planète devient un véritable exercice spirituel. Dans son art d'abord, car elle est chanteuse, mais aussi comédienne et poétesse – en 2021, elle a publié son premier recueil de poésies, « J'abrite un secret », aux éditions Bruno Doucey, auquel cet album de chansons fait écho, et dont l'idée a émergé après sa présentation théâtrale à la Maison de la poésie, dans une mise en scène de Marcel Bozonnet. Je chante un secret est le cinquième album conçu par l'artiste franco-tunisienne, qui a grandi à Tunis jusqu'à ses 16 ans et qui vit aujourd'hui à Saint-Denis. Nawel nous dit de sa voix exceptionnellement forte, grave, modulée à la façon des chekhates du raï ou empreinte de tension pop, qu'il ne faut pas chercher à rompre les digues protectrices de nos sentiments et de nos rêves. L'opus contient du chant, du parler-chanter, du franc-parler, de la performance, façon Patti Smith ou Kae Tempest, ouvrant les vannes de la colère et de l'énergie jusqu'à se faire peur. Nawel, en chant et en mots, fournit les armes de la reconquête intérieure. Elle porte en elle des identités multiples, des modes de vie divers, des générations perdues et des graines de futur. Je chante un secret est logiquement musicalement hybride, nappé d'électronique, de colères, d'atmosphères nourries à l'énergie du raï ou aux orgues mélancoliques. "Matthieu Saglio" es, sin duda, uno de los más grandes violonchelistas del mundo. Su capacidad para componer y fusionar de forma magistral distintas culturas y estilos musicales, no dejan de admirarnos. Y a su gran capacidad como intérprete, Matthieu suma el valiente trabajo de sacar al violonchelo de sus entornos tradicionales de la música clásica, para hacerlo bailar con instrumentos y sonoridades de muy diferentes latitudes. Ahora nos presenta, con su cuarteto, su nuevo disco de estudio: "VOICES" y para la ocasión, Matthieu ha contado con varias voces del mundo como Alim Qasimov, Natacha Atlas, Anna Colom y su hermano Camille Saglio, entre otras. Hablamos de este nuevo disco con Matthieu y con el ingeniero de sonido y productor Juan Carlos Tomás, "Juanki", que lleva trabajando desde hace años con Matthieu en sus últimos discos. El régimen de las juntas militares argentinas duró desde 1976 hasta 1983 y en ese período se produjeron miles de violaciones de los Derechos Humanos. Asesinatos, tortura, secuestro, robo y violaciones son parte del horror que sufrieron decenas de miles de personas. El productor de televisión y documentalista Miguel Rodríguez Arias, hizo la película "El Nüremberg Argentino", con los archivos del juicio a las juntas, con material de la época y con entrevistas a seis supervivientes de los campos de concentración. Like the birth of a slow and beautiful sunrise across open lands, the mix takes a full 13 minutes to draw you in.  Next, that first dose of dance is anything but tranquil.  The acidy synths only add to the high as the tracks dive immediately underground.  Dante is known for the most diverse sets on our podcast and yet he still lays down a tribal throughline from beginning to end.  The music surprises inside are one earbomb after another for 2 hours.  There are slices between big dance tracks where you can catch your breath, but those selections too come with an intensity and passion for electronic rhythms like only Dante can do. Deep House / Melodic Techno / Emotional Robot / Breaks.   After watching lots of video mixes on YouTube recently by the likes of DJ Boring and Kilimanjaro (check out their Boiler Room sets by the way), I got inspiration to get creative and use the effects and other channels more and to cut up tracks and do some samples. Natacha Atlas présente son nouvel album The Inner & The Outer (Wise Music Publishing 2021). Comme pour de nombreux artistes, le monde de Natacha Atlas s'est figé en mars 2020. Elle qui devait présenter au monde et sur scène son dernier album Strange Days paru en novembre 2019, un titre particulièrement annonciateur de la situation que nous vivons toutes et tous actuellement, s'est vue confinée en plein vol. The Inner & The Outer est une réflexion mais aussi une réponse au bouleversement que notre monde vit depuis de longs mois. Cela faisait longtemps que Natacha voulait revenir aux musiques électroniques, parallèlement à ses multiples expérimentations dans le jazz et les musiques arabes. Longtemps qu'elle voulait explorer d'autres manières de partager avec les artistes qu'elle aime. Il n'est certes pas surprenant qu'elle ait voulu travailler sur ce projet avec Samy Bishai, son partenaire musical (et de vie) depuis plus de dix ans. Compositeur, musicien et arrangeur brillant, ce dernier évolue avec une aisance incroyable entre les mondes de la pop, de la world, de l'électronique, du jazz, de la musique classique ou arabe. Samy a toujours navigué à la pointe de la musique électronique et sa sensibilité lui a permis d'appréhender la conception sonore et la programmation de l'EP en totale harmonie avec l'univers de Natacha. Tout a commencé avec The Outer, réaction immédiate à ce qui tombait sur le monde, traduction directe des émotions ressenties, collectivement et personnellement. Manifestations de peur, de méfiance, de colère, d'inconfort dans un monde où l'on ne sait plus faire confiance à ses propres repères. Les sons se font angulaires, inquiétants, dissonants. Avec l'éloignement, le choix de travailler avec le beatboxer Jason Singh sur The Outer était devenu une évidence pour Natacha. Elle connaissait et aimait son travail depuis de nombreuses années et les deux artistes qui s'admirent mutuellement, ont souvent évoqué leur souhait de créer quelque chose ensemble. The Outer a été le parfait point de rencontre. Une expérience tellement intense et enrichissante que Natacha a très vite ressenti le besoin de de créer, d'explorer à nouveau telle une réponse plus mesurée qui transcende l'immédiateté et le trouble. The Inner est né. Pour Natacha, "The Inner est un état émotionnel et contemplatif qui se tourne vers l'espérance, une révélation, un éveil, qui se connecte à une vérité intemporelle et universelle évoquée par les sages et philosophes à travers le monde et l'histoire". The Inner est un moyen de commencer à apprivoiser ses émotions, une manière de guérir, une manière de se détacher des évènements extérieurs. S'attacher la participation de Yazz Ahmed à ce titre s'est avéré naturelle pour Natacha. Les deux artistes se vouent une vraie admiration depuis des années. Le jeu subtil, presque fragile de la bugliste anglo-bahreïnienne, adepte d'un certain jazz arabe psychédélique apporte beaucoup d'intensité à l'intimité du morceau. Musicalement, ce titre est devenu un morceau aux multiples ramifications, Natacha et Samy n'ont pu s'empêcher de s'aventurer dans des variations et déclinaisons de ce thème. The Inner Dimension est un écho aux exercices quotidiens de respiration et de méditation de Natacha. Il n'est pas étonnant qu'elle ait toujours voulu s'aventurer dans la création d'une musique plus méditative. Les remixes Inner Stardust et Inner Sunset résonnent comme l'espoir d'un retour à la normale, un retour à certaines expériences sociales et humaines. On se prend à rêver d'un verre tout en contemplant un coucher de soleil sur un roof top à Los Angeles. Échappée du duo R&B Haute, révélé par une session COLORS mémorable fin 2017, l'une des plus visionnées du studio berlinois, la compositrice, chanteuse et multi-instrumentiste franco-américaine Anna Majidson entame un nouveau chapitre de sa carrière.Sur ce premier EP solo, Mixtape Telecom, Anna Majidson révèle une dérive pop charmeuse aux atours plus folk qu'à son habitude, proche de ses racines outre-Atlantique. Sur ce nouveau terrain de jeu, la chanteuse ouvre une parenthèse musicale plus épurée, patiemment affinée, au service d'une musique à la spiritualité et l'émotion jamais feintes. Née dans une famille de musiciens, élevée entre la France et les États-Unis dont son père est originaire, Anna s'applique à travailler la basse, la guitare et le piano dès son plus jeune âge, dans la plus pure tradition familiale. En 2014, elle rencontre à Montréal le producteur Blasé, avec qui elle forme le duo Haute. Portés entre autres par leur single Shut Me Down, qui totalise plus de 20 millions de vues sur Youtube, poussés par une session COLORS largement remarquée, tous deux se retrouvent en première partie d'Angèle à l'Olympia au printemps 2019, avant la sortie de leur album éponyme fin 2020. Anna Majidson, de son côté, s'est retrouvée en featuring aux côtés de certaines de ses idoles musicales : Seu Jorge en 2018 et Macy Gray en 2020. Alternant entre chants anglais et français, à l'image de sa double culture, Anna Majidson va puiser cette fois dans une partie de ses influences américaines, résolument country et bluegrass, pour explorer un son à la direction plus pop qu'avec Haute, où l'esprit d'un R&B au groove proéminent et à la production résolument moderne s'imposait de fait.   Sur Mixtape Telecom, Anna Majidson retrouve le sens premier de mélodies charmeuses et d'univers où la nostalgie affleure à chaque recoin de morceaux aux structures tour à tour ingénieuses et évidentes. Dans un geste à la pureté simple recherchée, Anna Majidson accueille les contributions de qualité d'invités internationaux : les Français November Ultra et Jeune Faune, la chanteuse allemande Noraa et l'Américaine Khieu. Solénoïde (24.05.2021) - Hommage cette semaine à l'un des artistes les plus respectés, et désormais regrettés, du world beat britannique: le producteur et multi-instrumentiste NICK PAGE. De façon aussi triste qu'inattendue, Nick nous a quittés en mai 2021, laissant derrière lui une œuvre magistrale remplie de merveilles discographiques aux parfums d'Orient, de Jamaïque et d'Afrique. Cofondateur de Transglobal Underground, il a impulsé une multitude d'aventures musicales, dont la plus importante fut aussi sa dernière : Dub Colossus. Ce collectif créé en 2008 lui permit d'accomplir son ultime ambition artistique : réaliser l'osmose entre son amour du reggae-dub et sa passion pour les rythmes et voix d'Ethiopie. Un challenge qu'il a relevé avec cœur et brio, signant aux côté de ses amis éthiopiens des pépites intemporelles de fusion organique et groovy. En mars 2019, Nick nous offrait un SolénoMix ensoleillé, gorgé de rythmes lascifs et de cuivres vitaminés que nous vous proposons d'écouter.

Cela faisait longtemps que Natacha voulait revenir aux musiques électroniques, parallèlement à ses multiples expérimentations dans le jazz et les musiques arabes. Longtemps qu’elle voulait explorer d’autres manières de partager avec les artistes qu’elle aime. Il n’est certes pas surprenant qu'elle ait voulu travailler sur ce projet avec Samy Bishai, son partenaire musical (et de vie) depuis plus de dix ans. Compositeur, musicien et arrangeur brillant, ce dernier évolue avec une aisance incroyable entre les mondes de la pop, de la world, de l'électronique, du jazz, de la musique classique ou arabe. Samy a toujours navigué à la pointe de la musique électronique et sa sensibilité lui a permis d’appréhender la conception sonore et la programmation de l’EP en totale harmonie avec l’univers de Natacha. Tout a commencé avec The Outer, réaction immédiate à ce qui tombait sur le monde, traduction directe des émotions ressenties, collectivement et personnellement. Manifestations de peur, de méfiance, de colère, d’inconfort dans un monde où l’on ne sait plus faire confiance à ses propres repères. Les sons se font angulaires, inquiétants, dissonants. Avec l’éloignement, le choix de travailler avec le beatboxer Jason Singh sur The Outer était devenu une évidence pour Natacha. Elle connaissait et aimait son travail depuis de nombreuses années et les deux artistes qui s'admirent mutuellement, ont souvent évoqué leur souhait de créer quelque chose ensemble. The Outer a été le parfait point de rencontre. Une expérience tellement intense et enrichissante que Natacha a très vite ressenti le besoin de de créer, d’explorer à nouveau telle une réponse plus mesurée qui transcende l’immédiateté et le trouble. The Inner est né. Pour Natacha, "The Inner est un état émotionnel et contemplatif qui se tourne vers l’espérance, une révélation, un éveil, qui se connecte à une vérité intemporelle et universelle évoquée par les sages et philosophes à travers le monde et l'histoire". The Inner est un moyen de commencer à apprivoiser ses émotions, une manière de guérir, une manière de se détacher des évènements extérieurs. S’attacher la participation de Yazz Ahmed à ce titre s’est avéré naturelle pour Natacha. Les deux artistes se vouent une vraie admiration depuis des années. Le jeu subtil, presque fragile de la bugliste anglo-bahreïnienne, adepte d’un certain jazz arabe psychédélique apporte beaucoup d’intensité à l’intimité du morceau. Musicalement, ce titre est devenu un morceau aux multiples ramifications, Natacha et Samy n’ont pu s’empêcher de s’aventurer dans des variations et déclinaisons de ce thème. The Inner Dimension est un écho aux exercices quotidiens de respiration et de méditation de Natacha. Il n'est pas étonnant qu'elle ait toujours voulu s’aventurer dans la création d’une musique plus méditative. Les remixes Inner Stardust et Inner Sunset résonnent comme l’espoir d’un retour à la normale, un retour à certaines expériences sociales et humaines. On se prend à rêver d’un verre tout en contemplant un coucher de soleil sur un roof top à Los Angeles. Née dans une famille de musiciens, élevée entre la France et les États-Unis dont son père est originaire, Anna s’applique à travailler la basse, la guitare et le piano dès son plus jeune âge, dans la plus pure tradition familiale. En 2014, elle rencontre à Montréal le producteur Blasé, avec qui elle forme le duo Haute. Portés entre autres par leur single Shut Me Down, qui totalise plus de 20 millions de vues sur Youtube, poussés par une session COLORS largement remarquée, tous deux se retrouvent en première partie d’Angèle à l’Olympia au printemps 2019, avant la sortie de leur album éponyme fin 2020. Anna Majidson, de son côté, s’est retrouvée en featuring aux côtés de certaines de ses idoles musicales : Seu Jorge en 2018 et Macy Gray en 2020. Alternant entre chants anglais et français, à l’image de sa double culture, Anna Majidson va puiser cette fois dans une partie de ses influences américaines, résolument country et bluegrass, pour explorer un son à la direction plus pop qu’avec Haute, où l’esprit d’un R&B au groove proéminent et à la production résolument moderne s’imposait de fait.   Sur Mixtape Telecom, Anna Majidson retrouve le sens premier de mélodies charmeuses et d’univers où la nostalgie affleure à chaque recoin de morceaux aux structures tour à tour ingénieuses et évidentes. Fem memòria a Argelers de la Marenda amb Teresa Cau, una professora jubilada d'anglès i escriptora. Filla de la Retirada, va néixer i créixer al barri de la Citre de Portvendres a l'època en què aquest vilatge era la porta d'entrada a l'Estat francès des de l'Algèria francesa. Filla d'una assistent del president de la Generalitat de Catalunya Josep Tarradellas, Cau ens parla dels anys 50 a Portvendres, de la seua vida a l'escola. Els estudis la duen a estudiar a la nova facultat de lletres de Perpinyà, al País de Gal·les, a Montpeller, a Bordeus i a Brazzaville. Posteriorment obté el CAPES d'anglès i comença a treballar a Vierzon, a Aiacciu i no és fins l'any 1987 que aconsegueix tornar a Catalunya Nord amb una plaça al col·legi de Sant Esteve del Monestir fins la seua jubilació l'any 2010. En aquest moment és quan es posa a escriure i des de l'any 2013 ha publicat set novel·les en francès, algunes amb traducció al català. La seua tria musical per acompanyar aquest programa la formen cançons de Teresa Rebull, Sapho et Jairo, Johnny Clegg, Natacha Atlas i Michel Berger. Un programa de Berenguer Ballester enregistrat el novembre del 2019.

Natacha Atlas began exploring jazz and Middle Eastern melodies on her 2015 album Myriad Road with Franco-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf. She goes one step further on Strange Days, co-written and produced with violinist Samy Bishai. An accomplishment for the vocalist at the height of her talents, but who says she couldn't have done it without Bishai. "It's probably the most accomplished album and all the most accomplished albums I've made have been with Samy Bishai," Atlas tells us just ahead of the album launch at the Bal Blomet in Paris. "I've learned more about musical theory with Samy because he was more classically trained than I was. There's lots of things that I can do on this album that I could not have done 10 years previously." Both artists are Anglo-Egyptian and share a love of the Arabic language. Bishai admits it was challenging bringing jazz and Arabic music together. "On the surface they're really incompatible," he says. "Arabic music is largely modal and uses lots of untempered scales that have quarter tones in them which makes it very difficult to make harmonies around them. Whereas jazz is largely obsessed with harmony." He says not only did Atlas rise to the challenge "she surprised me with just how good she was". Atlas and Bishai wrote the album together "throwing ideas backwards and forwards". They're extremely complicit, completing one anothers' thoughts and phrases as they talk. On stage, notably with dystopian love songs like Min Baad, it's hard to decipher who is pulling the (heart)strings. The album benefits from other first-rate musical support with Hayden Powell (trumpet and flugelhorn), Robinson Khoury (trombone), Alcyona Mick (piano), Andy Hamill (double bass), Asaf Sirkis (drums) Laurie Lowe (drums) and guests Joss Stone, Tanya Wells and Sofiane Saidi. Bishai has described the album as a "darkly dystopian Arabic-infused jazz fantasy" a way of avoiding pigeon-holing their oevure. Is it jazz, world music, world jazz, modern Arabic? Who cares. Natacha Atlas began exploring jazz and Middle Eastern melodies on her 2015 album Myriad Road with Franco-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf. She goes one step further on Strange Days, co-written and produced with violinist Samy Bishai. An accomplishment for the vocalist at the height of her talents, but who says she couldn't have done it without Bishai. "It's probably the most accomplished album and all the most accomplished albums I’ve made have been with Samy Bishai," Atlas tells us just ahead of the album launch at the Bal Blomet in Paris. "I’ve learned more about musical theory with Samy because he was more classically trained than I was. There’s lots of things that I can do on this album that I could not have done 10 years previously." Both artists are Anglo-Egyptian and share a love of the Arabic language. Bishai admits it was challenging bringing jazz and Arabic music together. "On the surface they’re really incompatible," he says. "Arabic music is largely modal and uses lots of untempered scales that have quarter tones in them which makes it very difficult to make harmonies around them. Whereas jazz is largely obsessed with harmony." He says not only did Atlas rise to the challenge "she surprised me with just how good she was". Atlas and Bishai wrote the album together "throwing ideas backwards and forwards". They're extremely complicit, completing one anothers' thoughts and phrases as they talk. On stage, notably with dystopian love songs like Min Baad, it's hard to decipher who is pulling the (heart)strings. The album benefits from other first-rate musical support with Hayden Powell (trumpet and flugelhorn), Robinson Khoury (trombone), Alcyona Mick (piano), Andy Hamill (double bass), Asaf Sirkis (drums) Laurie Lowe (drums) and guests Joss Stone, Tanya Wells and Sofiane Saidi. Bishai has described the album as a "darkly dystopian Arabic-infused jazz fantasy" a way of avoiding pigeon-holing their oevure. Is it jazz, world music, world jazz, modern Arabic? Who cares. It makes for a great listening experience. Umeå har genom åren lyckats att locka världens största jazzstjärnor till sin festival, här har bland andra Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Count Basie och Chick Corea uppträtt. Bland stjärnorna i årets festival märks Lina Nyberg, Ambrose Akinmisure, Natacha Atlas och Sarah Riedel.  Ni får träffa flera av dem när Lisa Wall och Peter Öberg sänder från flera av festivalens scener.

Natacha Atlas - Yalla Chant Edit By Petko Turner Most of Natacha Atlas' earlier albums were produced by Tim Whelan and Hamilton Lee from Transglobal Underground. Diaspora (1995), Halim (1997) (in honour of Egyptian singer Abdel Halim Hafez), Gedida (1998) and Ayeshteni (2001). Atlas has always spoken her mind about the way both she and Transglobal Underground were seen by the UK press back in the late 90s/early 2000. "Someone from the New Musical Express rang us about a feature we're to do with them and said 'We don't want it to be about the multi-cultural angle'. In other words that fad is over. And I'm personally insulted... what other angle is there for us?! I get sick of it all." In 1999, Atlas collaborated with David Arnold on the song "One Brief Moment". The single featured a cover version of the James Bond theme song from the film You Only Live Twice. Two years earlier, Atlas had collaborated with Arnold on the album Shaken and Stirred, recording the song "From Russia with Love" for the eponymous film(originally performed by Matt Monro). Also in 1999, she collaborated with Jean Michel Jarre for the track "C'est La Vie" on his album Métamorphoses. The track was released as a single. In 2003, Atlas provided vocals for the Kolo folk dance song "'Ajde Jano" on Nigel Kennedy and Kroke's album, East Meets East. In 2005, Atlas contributed the song "Just Like A Dream" (from Something Dangerous) to the charity album Voyces United for UNHCR. Her music has been used in a number of soundtracks. Her song "Kidda" was featured on the Sex and the City 2 soundtrack and in the 2005 video game Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories on Radio del Mundo. In 2003, her voice is heard in Hulk in the song "Captured“. Additionally, her song "Bathaddak" is one of the songs included in the 2007 Xbox 360 exclusive video game Project Gotham Racing 4. Her cover of I Put a Spell On You was used in the 2002 film Divine Intervention by Palestinian director Elia Suleiman. Atlas was originally billed to star in and provide the soundtrack to the film Whatever Lola Wants, directed by Nabil Ayouch. However, shooting delays caused Atlas to only be involved in the film's soundtrack. Her song "Gafsa" (Halim, 1997) was used as the main soundtrack during the Korean film Bin-Jip (also known as 3-Iron) (2004) by Kim Ki-Duk. She participated in the piece "Light of Life (Ibelin Reprise)" for the soundtrack of Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven. In 2007, Atlas collaborated with Belinda Carlisle for Belinda's seventh album Voila. She contributed additional vocals on songs "Ma Jeunesse Fout Le Camp," "La Vie En Rose", "Bonnie et Clyde" and "Des Ronds Dans L'Eau." Voila was released via Rykodisc in the U.K. on 5 February 2007 and in the U.S. the following day. The 2007 film Brick Lane features four songs with vocals by Atlas, "Adam's Lullaby", "Running Through the Night", "Love Blossoms" and "Rite of Passage". On 23 May 2008 Atlas released a new album, Ana Hina, which was well received by critics. In 2008, two of Atlas' songs, "Kidda" and "Ghanwa Bossanova", were used in Shamim Sarif's romantic comedy about two women, I Can't Think Straight. In 2008, she sang lead in the song "Habibe" from Peter Gabriel's long-awaited album and project, Big Blue Ball. On 20 September 2010 Atlas released Mounqaliba. Co-produced by Samy Bishai, it explored classical instrumentation, jazz and traditional Arabic styles and was inspired by the poems of Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. She is also composing the music for Francoise Charpat's upcoming film. In May 2013, Natacha Atlas released Expressions: Live in Toulouse, an album which showcased her expressive voice using largely orchestral arrangements augmented by Middle Eastern percussion.

Nous sommes au mois de Janvier 1986, le raï traverse la Méditerranée et arrive en France. Un festival se tient alors à la Maison de la Culture de Bobigny, il rassemble Cheb Khaled, Cheb Mami, la sulfureuse Cheikha Rimitti ainsi que le groupe Raïna Raï. Le public est en liesse, et cette évènement marque les débuts du succès du raï. Trente ans plus tard, en 2016, nous fêtons les 30 ans du raï en France… Nous recevons pour cette occasion le chanteur, compositeur et interprète Sofiane Saidi. Né dans l’ouest algérien, à Sidi Bel Abbés et baigné dans le tumulte des années noires, il arrive en France où il se construit dans l’aventure et l’effervescence des cabarets orientaux des années 90. De son expérience personnelle, de ses nombreuses rencontres et collaborations musicales – comme avec Natacha Atlas, Smadj, Tim Whelan, etc. – il tire un album talentueux intitulé “El Mordjane”. Sorti en novembre 2015, l'artiste y dévoile une voix chaude et abrasive et signe une composition musicale aux teintes multiples, véritable voyage entre le rai et des sonorités électro-rock ! She spoke about her Summer 2010 tour and her upcoming new album, "Mounqaliba" ("State of Reversal"). She spoke to Jordan from her home in London while preparing to return to the U.S. for shows in November in California and Seattle.
