Today, the Spotlight shines On experimental music producers and label owners Taylor Deupree and Joseph Branciforte.Back in 2002, Taylor Deupree released an electronic album called Stil. That release captivated listeners with its quiet, repeating patterns and stark digital sound. Twenty years later, Taylor and producer Joseph Branciforte linked up to reimagine the album as Sti.ll, rebuilding the entire work using only non-electronic instruments. The new version takes all of the computer-generated sounds from the original and puts them in the hands of live musicians playing clarinets, strings, and percussion. It is an ambitious and adventurous project from two collaborators enmeshed in experimental music—Taylor runs 12k Music and has spent years blending electronic and natural sounds, while Joe's built Greyfade into a label that keeps finding creative ways to present creative music. They're here to walk us through this one-of-a-kind project while covering several other topics related to creativity and the modern music business.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from the albums Stil. and Stil.ll, played side-by-side.)–Dig DeeperVisit Taylor Deupree and 12k at 12k.comVisit Joseph Branciforte and greyfade at greyfade.comPurchase Stil. from 12k or Bandcamp, and listen on your streaming platform of choicePurchase Sti.ll from greyfade, 12k, Qobuz, Bandcamp, and listen on your streaming platform of choiceA Voyage of Seeing: On Hiroshi Sugimoto's SeascapesDig into this episode's complete show notes at spotlightonpodcast.com–• Did you enjoy this episode? A fascinating and frankly bonkers translation has taken place Taylor Deupree's original album Stil., released in 2002 was made with 100% digital techniques with a heavy dose of microsound, layering and looping. It now exists as something wildly different and yet painstakingly based on that work. This new iteration is a 100% acoustic version which takes it from Stil. to Sti.ll This is a rare form of digital to analog conversion and should only be attempted by festidious and slightly insane people! Sti.ll, released in 2024, is a complete reimagining of Stil., recorded entirely with acoustic instruments, such as clarinets, vibraphones, and cellos, played by live musicians. This new version abandons digital sound manipulation in favor of human performance, where sounds previously made with software are recreated through physical instruments and microphones. The transformations go beyond just switching mediums; the acoustic textures bring warmth and depth, making it an entirely new and distinct experience, while retaining the essence of the original. Who would attempt such madness? Taylor Deupree (wiki-ish) is a prolific electronic musician, sound artist, and founder of the record label 12k. Known for his contributions to the microsound and minimalist electronic music movements, Taylor's work often blends digital and acoustic elements. His music is characterized by its delicate, detailed textures and use of repetition to create slowly evolving soundscapes. Joe Branciforte (wiki-ish) is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and Grammy award-winning recording engineer and producer based in New York. He is the founder of the record label Greyfade, which focuses on process-based composition, electronic and acoustic minimalism, and alternative tuning systems. Joe's expertise spans both electronic and acoustic music, making him adept at bridging these worlds in innovative ways. His work often involves live electronic processing of acoustic instruments, and he has collaborated with renowned artists like Kenneth Kirschner and Theo Bleckmann. His technical mastery and creative vision were key to bringing Taylor Deupree's acoustic reimagining of Stil. to life in Sti.ll, where he played an integral role in transcribing and arranging the complex digital compositions for live instrumentation. So good to chat with these masters about a project of such huge scope. We discuss this album at length and also Taylor's collaboration with the late, great Ryuichi Sakamoto links: https://www.taylordeupree.com https://josephbranciforte.com MUSIC from the show: from the email I received: Last year Miet Warlop and me (Micha Volders) went to Dhaka, Bangladesh to make a visceral musical performance with young students. It opened the Dhaka Art Summit and we played for a curious Bengali crowd of thousands. This city is a whole other universe, it's loud, it's overcrowded, it's vibrant. I work on a daily basis with young artists but I rarely experienced this kind of hunger, joy and motivation from these young students. We rehearsed 3 weeks in a row on this huge ghetto sound system placed middle on the road in the city, to a point where local residents were fed up and sabotaged our (already super shabby) P;A system by cutting all the wires,  It was challenging, it was exciting and it was touching. So one year later we made a record out of the recordings of this venture : it's called ICCHĀ ——> check it out here

Welcome back to another episode of We All Speak In Poems, before I get to the summary of this conversation, I'd like to thank Andrew Tasselmyer for joining me in this conversation. Honestly, he came up with a vast majority of the questions and conversation points here, and the episode wouldn't be as good without him. Please go check out his new podcast Sound Method where he also chats with a ton of amazing Ambient artists. In this conversation, Andrew and I are chatting with Taylor Deupree to discuss his approach to music-making, the inspiration behind his music, the 12 principles of his label 12K, and his new mixing space. We discuss the setup of Taylor's studio space and the importance of balancing acoustics, workflow, and vibe, and also delve into the artistic role in mastering and the challenges of live performance. Additionally, we touch on the challenges faced by independent labels and Taylor's personal preference for purchasing and downloading music. Taylor also emphasizes the principles of music, including the idea that everything will change and the importance of striving for timelessness. I hope you enjoy this episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/we-all-speak-in-poems/message

You can listen to “Cottonwood” on all digital retailers (((HERE))) “Annie takes a transcendental approach to ambient country, coaching modular minimalism into a character that interacts with its surroundings.” - Bandcamp Daily Here is what Eli says about this mix: " 'Quiet Days' is a collection of some of my favorite artists and songs from the last year. Included are a few unreleased tracks from my upcoming album “The Wind”. I imagine listening to the mix while sitting at the coast on a foggy day." Northern (Redux) began as something altogether different. The planned record length cover of Taylor Deupree's 2006 ambient album became a collaboration. Jeremiah Fraites brought Dupree into the projects to reimagine the original, with the Lumineers cofounder behind the piano. It was a departure from Fraites' solo debut Piano Piano, but both projects are united as radically different works than his immensely popular alternative folk band. Episode 62 of The Ambient Vault podcast features special guest Jay Cliffen.  Jay Cliffen is a Canadian instrumental music producer. He specializes in textural cassette-based ambient music. Inspired by minimalist art and design, with influences from jazz, classical, and pop styles, Jay began producing instrumental and increasingly experimental compositions. He developed a sound that blends the harmonic richness of analog synthesizers with acoustic instruments, fused together by magnetic tape, with all of its imperfections. From tape warble, pitch motion, hissing and crackling, emerges mood and emotions that are best described as modern nostalgia.Jay's Ambient Vault session features a collection of unreleased music, designed for meditative moments of quiet reflection. The EP uses sounds from the Lyra-8 synthesizer, Elektron Digitakt for sequencing and re-sampling, as well as micro loop, and tape looping techniques. Mastered at 12K Mastering by Taylor Deupree. Many thanks to Jay for being on the podcast and as always thanks for listening! In this conversation, we go into detail about Taylor's connection to Japan, the history of 12k, the twelve principles underpinning everything the label creates, and the community he's been building since the label's inception. ••• Head to www.conversationslateatnight.com for more episodes. ※ All music composed by SJF. It's funny how mixes come together sometimes. I started this one only knowing I wanted it to be pretty straightforward ambient. The easiest thing to do was to start with some new music from the last month or two. As I laid down a few tracks I started to get this feeling of the sea, of drifting on the water, of a quiet harbor. So I went with it.   Before long I had an entire mix of new music that hung together with this beautiful ebb & flow. The theme came about organically. The tracks themselves dictated what the mood would be. I've done other sea themed mixes over the years and this one could be the most subtle. I didn't add any field recordings - any wave sounds were already in a track. It's more about feel and vibe than sound fx. All the cuts are from 2021 except for Bursts of Static by Olga Wojciechowska. I heard that on the BBC the morning after finishing the mix and knew immediately that I had to include it. This mix might work well as soundtrack for a rainy spring day or for a nap in hammock as you dream of drifting out on the tide. Welcome to the 13th episode of Anechoic Chamber; free-form audio and insights from the margins of art and culture. Our guests for this edition are Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand, a partnership known for their advancement of scientific creativity - that is to say, for a series of works that are aesthetically engaging while also being informed by a high level of scientific rigor, and in particular by a specialist knowledge in the limits of perceptibility. The duo's fascinating art events, with alluring titles such as “Mucilaginous Omniverse,” or “Sonolevitation,” are almost unparalleled in the modern art world, owing to their rejection of that milieu's largely linguistic approach to propagating itself and a clearer focus on art as phenomenological study. More importantly, though, they earn their distinction by exploring the so-called “objectless universe, “ exposing audiences to physical phenomena in various transitional states or states of incompleteness. In some cases, their commitment has led to historic firsts, such as the largest display of sonoluminescence ever displayed (this being the emission of light bursts from imploding bubbles within an acoustically excited liquid). Through these actions, Domnitch and Gelfand have also touched upon the sensory condition of synesthesia and raised the question of perceptual modalities beyond the five so-called classical senses. We hope you find the following discussion of their methods and inspirations as stimulating as we do. Additional sounds from the artists' installation / performances "Force Field" and "Mucilaginous Universe," and "Specification Sixteen" (audio by Richard Chartier & Taylor Deupree) from "Camera Lucida" DVD Artist links: www.portablepalace.com Anechoic Chamber links Donate via Paypal: tbwb@protonmail.com general host activities: www.thomasbeywilliambailey.com

If you listen to any of the music that I do, you have seen the name of this week’s guest: Taylor Deupree. He is a mastering engineer extraordinaire, but he is also an amazing artist and collaborator, as well as running the 12k label. But for all of this work, Taylor is amazingly laid back, and our discussion was fantastically chilled. During our talk, we go through his background, getting started as both an artist and mastering engineer, how he approaches collaboration and what it is like to live in rural New York. Each part of this discussion is filled with surprise, and the whole interview really helps you understand – and appreciate – his work and his perspectives. Warning: it’ll also drive you into listening to a lot of his work, too! You can learn more about Taylors work at his site (http://www.taylordeupree.com/), his mastering site (http://www.12kmastering.com/), his bandcamp page (https://taylordeupree.bandcamp.com/) and his label site (https://www.12k.com/). There’s something about Marcus Fischer’s music that fits this season. Last year, a lot of listeners shared how the snowstorms they were homebound by were the perfect backdrop to Marcus’s reflections. As another year closes, I am so excited to share another conversation with this wonderful artist. This isn’t something I expected, but Marcus has been really giving of his time and it was his suggestion to do a follow-up. In the spirit of the season, I’m very thankful to have gotten to know him better. Since episode 5, Marcus has been for lack of a much better word, busy. He completed the Rauschenberg Residency and released the follow-up to 2010’s 'Monocoastal' — 'Loss', which is absolutely stunning. He established an experimental power trio with Paul Dickow and William Selman called Wild Card, which toured with High Plains at the end of this past summer. He’s been performing with Lisa Schonberg’s Secret Drum Band. He recorded another collaboration with 12k’s Taylor Deupree called 'Lowlands'. And I’m sure I’m missing something. This episode digs beyond his output as an artist to explore the internal processes that inform his approach, especially as an improviser. As always, the music from each of these projects and partnerships weaves throughout the episode, which can all be purchased as digital or characteristically breathtaking physical objects on Bandcamp. Grab a warm cup of tea and dive in. ‘I'm just pretending … as if I'm preparing for a space journey, and the space journey, it takes many years.' Aziz After months of interviews, Aziz finally sits facing an immigration officer and an interpreter, about to find out whether he's been granted refugee status. But he's too angry to talk about that. What he'd rather know is why he's just spent weeks locked in a jail cell in Lorengau, before being abruptly released without charge. In this episode, Aziz tells Michael about the hunger strike that lead to his imprisonment, and why he continues to pursue big and small acts of resistance – despite the consequences. As the world reacts to the Trump administration's new US border policies, Aziz's situation is as uncertain as ever, with no end in sight. Life on Manus grinds on.  ‘When we see someone who is just hurting himself or he is trying to commit suicide, sometimes you just drag yourself away because of not getting the pictures in your head.' Aziz In this episode, Aziz and Michael start to get to know each other – and Aziz begins to paint a picture for Michael of daily life in the detention centre.Where is it, and why is it there? What are the conditions really like, and what's it like to live there with more than 800 other men and no prospect of release?Back in Melbourne, Michael meets Aziz's friend John Zammit, a former Manus Island psychologist who shares his experiences of the detention centre, and his recollections of Aziz. With help from John, and from Aziz's many messages, Michael pieces together a sense of Aziz's daily routine, just as order in the camp gets turned upside down … Warning: This episode of The Messenger mentions suicide and self-harm. Marcus Fischer has been a staple figure in modern ambient and experimental music for the better part of the last decade. Characterized by his masterful use of tape loops, Fischer's works also build space and emotion through layers of baritone guitar and modular synths. His solo debut, 'Monocoastal', was released on 12k in 2010 to international acclaim. Over the course of his career, he has partnered with several artists: Matt Jones (as Unrecognizable Now), Ted Laderas/The OO-Ray, Simon Scott, Devin Underwood. His collaborations with Taylor Deupree, with whom Fischer released 'Twine' in 2015, are masterclasses in shared voice and restraint. Fischer is a longstanding member of lines (www.llllllll.co), the online community that surrounds Eurorack module and instrument maker monome. Benoît Pioulard has two new albums out & they are both wonderful.  It was after hearing "Sonnet" that I decided to make a mix that featured the same sort of dusty, slightly noisy ambient tunes. You can find his album "Sonnet" on Amazon here... SONNET And his latest, "Stanza" here... https://pioulard.bandcamp.com/album/stanza Stanza is a companion piece to Sonnet.  I didn't even know about it until I went looking for links for this post.  I'm so glad that I found it but I wish I'd found it sooner, then I could have worked a track from it into this mix. Basically the mix is a collection of tunes that falls in line with the sound of those two Benoît Pioulard albums - kind of hazy and dusty. Enjoy. Today's Headphone Commute podcast comes from Floyd Kelley III. This mix is almost exclusively composed of tracks from Taylor Deupree's 12k label and Richard Chartier's LINE imprint, both at the forefront of experimental, minimal and microsound evolution. Microsound music isn’t for everyone. It takes a disciplined ear and a lot of patience. Many pass it off as non-musical. Some consider it too high brow. It took me years to really learn to appreciate it. Microsound artists can be included in the same rankings as 20th-century composers such as John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Boulaz, Pierre Henry, and Pierre Schaeffer. The terms: field recording, minimalism, tape music, musique concrète, electroacoustic, and avant-garde immediately come to mind... MIXES – Ambientblog

First, let me give my best wishes for 2010 to all of you!! What better way to start the new year than with a brand new mix ánd a brand new design (thanks Ingmar from Planet KL!)? The design change is symbolic, in a way: after publishing a lot of mixes in 2009, all of wich were created for radio broadcast, it is now time to take a further step and start publishing new mixes. "Miserere" is the first of these brand new mixes to be published. "Miserere" has taken its name from the concluding piece: Gregoria Allegri's Miserere, as performed by the Tallis Scholars. While working on this mix, I soon felt that this piece had to be the conclusion, and that it should not be combined with other pieces of music or environmental sounds.--- originally published on Ambientblog --- MISERERE PLAYLIST 0:00 Robert Hampson - Ahead Only the Stars- Vectors, 2009 Touch TO:710:10 Meredith Monk - Liquid Air- Mercy, 2002 Ecm 18291:14 Don Peyote - The Guardian- Eternal Now, 2009 Don Peyote Recordings DPY1CD0043:02 Martin O'Donnell, Michael Salvatori - The Rookie- Halo 3 ODST Soundtrack, 2009 Something Else6:47 Kreng - Slaapliedje- L'Autopsie Phénomenale de Dieu, 2009 Miasmah MIALP0107:16 The Caretaker - I Saw Your Face in a Dream- We'll all go riding on a Rainbow, 200x v/VM Test records VVMTCD157:29 Thomas Köner - 31 46 N 35 12 E Hour Ten- La Barca, 2009 Fario cd099:43 Nigel Samways - City of Gas Streetlamps- Veilleur de Nuit, 2009 Experimedia EXP05110:09 Rafael Anton Irrisarri - Still- Musique Pour Statues Menhirs, 2009 Arbouse recording arbou2612:58 Michel Banabila - Tape (Mix 2)- Changing Structures, 2009 soundcloud13:22 Jóhann Jóhannsson - The Flat- And in the endless Pause there came the sound of Bees, 2009 Type Type64LP16:02 Jónsi & Alex - Sleeping Giant- Riceboy Sleeps, 2009 Parlophone 509999630022017:00 Michel Banabila - Zeer Duister (voor Peter van Cooten)- Not on album, 2007 unreleased17:29 Kreng - Mythobarbital- L'Autopsie Phénomenale de Dieu, 2009 Miasmah MIALP01019:06 Benjamin Dauer - Murmur- Ceci N'Est pas une Pipe, 2009 Public Space Labs PS01021:20 Taylor Deupree - 6 A.M.- Favourite Places 1, 2007 Audiobulb 2007 AB01622:33 Robert Hampson - Ahead- Only the Stars - Vectors, 2009 Touch TO:7124:04 Franz Hautzinger - Deep T.- Gomberg II, 2007 Loewenhertz 01825:25 Franz Hautzinger - Fahne- Gomberg II, 2007 Loewenhertz 01826:20 Murcof - Isaías IV- La Sangre Illuminada, 2009 Intolerancia Records28:11 Exuviae - Wane and Flicker- Intrinsic Luminance, 2009 Endless Ascent ea00730:15 Jónsi & Alex - Boy 1904- Riceboy Sleeps, 2009 Parlophone 509999630022033:22 Sleep Research Facility - Dark Side of the Lune- Au Clair de La Lune, 2009 Infrequency 00534:05 Else Marie Pade - Illustrations - The Palace of the Sea King- Water-colours of the Sea, 2009 Dacapo Records 8.22654434:44 Netherworld - Jostedaal- Zaum, 2009 Psychonavigation Records PSY02937:02 Else Marie Pade - Illustrations - The Palace of the Sea King- Water-colours of the Sea, 2009 Dacapo Records 8.22654437:41 Ronald van der Meijs - Under the Dream- Private collection, 2009 unreleased39:05 Lawrence English - Quiet Planigale- Favourite Places 2, 2009 Audiobulb AB02643:27 Clint Mansell - We're Not Programs, Gerty, We're People- Moon OST, 2009 Black Records CMCD00144:15 Elegi - Fandens Bre- Varde, 2009 Miasmah MIACD00945:18 Hildur Gudnadottir - Unveiled- Without Sinking, 2009 Touch TO:7045:31 Hildur Gudnadottir - Elevation- Without Sinking, 2009 Touch TO:7047:35 Last Days - Thoughts of Alice- The Safety of the North, 2009 n5MD MD16650:12 Wixel - Jotunheimen- Norway, 2009 (august) 2009.bandcamp.com51:08 Scanner - Leoni- Consegnaci, Bambina, I Tuoi Occhi, 2009 Horus Music51:37 Robert Henke - Indigo_Transform- Indigo_Transform, 2009 Imbalance Computer Music ICM 0852:46 Mathew Adkins - Sea Soundscape- [60] Project, 2008 Impreintes digitales IMED089855:00 Roland Etzin - On the Bus- Recorded in the Field by…, 2006 Gruenrekorder Gruen03355:13 Elian - It was over, just like that- And Then, One Day, It was over, just like that, 2008 Trans>Parent Radiation Trans01255:20 Murcof - Eugenio- La sangre Iluminada, 2009 Intolerancia Records56:30 The Caretaker - Past Life Regression- Persistent Repetition of Phrases, 2008 History Always Favours the Winners HAFTWDL00357:07 The Gentleman Losers - Oblivion's Tide- Dustland, 2009 City Centre Offices TowerblockCD04357:50 Aaron Ximm (The Quiet American) - Starboard- Maritime Suite, 200x self-released58:00 The Tallis Scholars - Gregorio Allegri - Miserere (3 fragments)- Allegri: Miserere, 2005 Gimsell Records GIMSE401
