The world needs more true and vulnerable stories of loss and struggle woven through with healing and hope, so that those who have gone through tribulation can then see the suffering of others and express the truth of God to the world. In this episode, Mikayla Munn and Linda Znachko share how, even through their own personal hardships, God is using them as instruments of healing for others.
Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 485: Mikayla Munn and Linda Znachko Former Inmate Becomes an Advocate for Women in Crisis Mikayla Munn and Linda Znachko Bring Life-Giving Message of Hope and Encouragement for Women Battling Trauma and Shame Indianapolis, IN—What would cause a young woman—a good student and college athlete— with a bright future to do the unthinkable and allow her newborn son to die? Mikayla Munn plead guilty in 2018 to neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury or death. After serving six years in an Indiana Women's Prison, Munn is now free and speaks publicly about the painful sequence of events that led to Alexander Liam's death. She shares a message of hope and redemption for any woman who finds herself in desperate circumstances. An unreported sexual assault between her junior and senior year at college led to feelings of shame and depression. Back at college for her senior year, Munn's depression deepened causing her to self-isolate, which progressed to anger toward family, friends, and teammates. She began drinking, sneaking alcohol into her room, and taking over-the-counter and prescription drugs to anesthetize her pain. Diagnosed with Acute Stress Disorder while in the hospital, Munn sought counseling help to make sense of her life and the choices she made that led to that fateful night. Following her subsequent arrest, Munn was placed in a suicide cell with nothing but a copy of the transcripts from the night of her son's death and witness statements Munn came face-to-face with her actions and the resulting consequences. Broken, she looked up and, in the light, saw the figure of a cross, and cried out to God. During the next six years, she was a model prisoner, attended continuing education classes, worked in the kitchen and other areas, and sought every opportunity to find out more about the God she had reached out to. With the help of the chaplain and others she attended group Bible studies, and during Covid lockdowns poured over the Word of God seeking greater understanding and intimacy with Him. Today, Munn continues to rebuild the broken pieces of her life with the help of her faith, family, and friends. She has joined forces with Linda Znachko of He Knows Your Name Ministries, to let others know how this loss of life can be avoided in the future. It was Znachko who, after the two-year criminal investigation had been completed, officiated and made all the arrangements for the funeral allowing Alexander's broken-hearted family to put him to rest. Munn wants women to know, encourages, and reminds them that: • Asking for help does not make you weak. It's okay to ‘not be okay' all the time. • We all bear scars and have skeletons in the closet, how we deal with them makes all the difference. • Choosing to navigate difficult circumstances well will make you a better person. • Shame is a thief that will destroy your self-esteem and self-respect if you let it. • Be courageous, speak up and fight for yourself, and don't suffer in silence. She also plans to partner with the “Safe Haven Baby Boxes” organization, an option that was not available to her at the time. The Safe Haven Baby Box program provides a way for a mother in distress, who might take the life of her newborn child, to bring the infant to a firehouse or hospital and anonymously surrender the baby in a safe chamber, allowing medical personnel to provide immediate care. “As we learned from Mikayla if mothers–at their height of panic and distress–know they have a safe, reliable way to place their infant into the hands of those who will care for the child, without facing prosecution for making this heartbreaking decision,” Znachko says, “I believe it will be possible to save the lives of thousands of babies every year, and also spare these mothers from lifelong pain and remorse.” ABOUT LINDA ZNACHKO In 2009, Linda Znachko unexpectedly had her life turned upside down after watching a television news report about the tragic death of a young infant abandoned in a trash dumpster. The heartbreaking report made Znachko resolve that she would do everything in her power to ensure no infant would ever again die without a name or a proper burial. As the founder of He Knows Your Name Ministries, Znachko now works with numerous mothers to make certain that every infant who dies under similar unfortunate circumstances is recognized as a precious and important life. Znachko partners with the organization “Safe Haven Baby Boxes” founded by Monica Kelsey and has spent the last seven years raising awareness and educating others about the Safe Haven Law and the Safe Haven Baby Box (SHBB) program, whose logo bears the footprint of baby Amelia, found deceased and abandoned at an Indiana park. In the seven years since Amelia was found Indiana has not had another abandoned deceased baby found, thanks in part to the work of Znachko and the SHBB program. The SHBB program has achieved an impressive success rate in Indiana and is now being studied by groups who share Znachko's commitment to preventing avoidable tragic infant deaths in other states throughout the U.S. As a result of the success of the program, the National Safe Haven law has been enhanced with the Safe Haven Baby Box option in Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, and is being considered in other states. Znachko is a popular speaker at conferences and retreats and has been interviewed on The Steve Harvey Show, WISH-TV, Fox 59, The Indy Star, LifeToday, In the Market with Janet Parshall, American Essence Magazine, and many others. Following the striking of Roe v Wade, one state is taking a pro-life stance and creating a model law for other states to follow. Indiana signed into law a new bill that will eliminate 95-99% of abortions while also addressing needed family support due to increased birthrate. Linda Znachko, founder of He Knows Your Name Ministries, recently gave testimony before the Indiana Senate and House and describes the good, the bad, and the ugly that took place during the eight days of hearings. From protestors shouting vile remarks, supporters singing and sharing words of encouragement, and hard-working legislators and police trying to keep things orderly, Znachko shares her perspective and how other states can piggyback off what Indiana has done to adapt and modify the law in their state. Linda’s impact in Indiana and beyond has included providing funerals and headstones for babies and children. These gifts are given to babies who are abandoned and to serve under resourced families. This has benefited bereaving families when they experience Infant & Pregnancy Loss. Linda Znachko claims unclaimed babies after they die. She gives them a name and tombstone, honoring each life as she feels the Lord would. There's supernatural significance in a name, she says. And in death, she sees life. She ministers to families in grief. She has a unique opportunity to bring peace in the midst of heartache. On the International Day of the Unborn, she will hold a funeral for another baby and give him a legacy. Listen to the podcast to hear her incredible story.
I first heard today’s guest, Linda Znachko, unexpectedly at an event several months ago. She had me in tears within a few minutes of telling her story. The same could be said of our interview today, where Linda joined me at my house to talk about her beautiful ministry, He Knows Your Name. Simply put, this organization gives abandoned babies dignity in death. When a baby is abandoned outdoors or at the hospital in some kind of tragic circumstance, Linda is the one who comes to that baby’s side, taking custody of the child, giving them a name, a funeral and a headstone. Her ministry extends beyond just babies, and she’s been given the opportunity to help women mourning stillbirths, abo rtions and even the deaths of older children. There are so many families in need who cannot afford funerals or headstones. I’d never considered the importance of a headstone until reading her book, which showcases how beautifully families have been able to find closure through this simple gesture. The circumstances Linda encounters everyday are heartbreaking, but she has taken up this task with humility and courage. The friendships forged across many lines and the ability to share the love of Christ with people dealing with the hardest thing they may ever experience are priceless. I was truly honored to have Linda in my home to share her stories. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I speak with Linda Znachko about her book He Knows Your Name: How One Abandoned Baby Inspired Me to Say Yes to God (Kregel Publications, 2016). Here's the ground we cover in our conversation: Your book, He Knows Your Name, tells of how your ministry by the same name got started. Tell us a little bit about how the news story about an abandoned baby inspired you to say yes to God's plan for you. (00:39 - 01:31) While anyone who watched the news or read the story of the abandoned would have certainly found it to be a terrible situation, you were struck on a deeper level. What was it about this baby that called you to action? (01:32 - 06:20) Were your family and friends support of your mission to provide a funeral and burial for the baby? How did you husband react? (06:21 - 11:40) Your journey began with wanting to provide a funeral for one abandoned baby but quickly grew into something much larger. Share with us the call you received while waiting to hear back about Baby Doe. (11:41 - 16:30) What advice can you offer those who have friends or family walking through the devastating loss of a child? Are some things more helpful or hurtful than others? (16:31 - 18:54) Linda, I know many of my listeners are going to want to find out more, so where are some of the places they can get a copy of the book? (18:55 - 21:14) About the Book: When the evening news reported a dead baby abandoned in a local dumpster, Linda Znachko's comfortable life changed. She was suddenly convicted—God was asking her to provide a dignified burial for this tiny lost child. Linda said yes. She had no idea where that first small yes would lead.Linda found herself in places she never dreamed she would be: at the graveside of the child of an abused mother; by the side of a mother fighting for her lost child; and at the funeral of a Texas stripper who died two days before her baptism but left a legacy of love behind. When Linda stepped out of her comfort zone and into these implausible places with people she was unlikely to otherwise encounter, she discovered the life she never knew she wanted—a life of saying yes to God whenever He asks. Today, Linda has a ministry that gives children a name in life, and dignity and honor in death. When she shares her stories of broken lives redeemed, other broken people respond, and so the ripple effects of that long-ago yes continue to spread, touching lives that yearn for healing, and underscoring the fact that every life matters to God.
