For the last year, Grants Pass has been at the center of a national conversation about where people who are homeless can stay. A lawsuit brought against the city by a group of homeless people had made its way all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court: Grants Pass v. Johnson. Last June, the court released a six-to-three decision finding that it is not cruel or unusual punishment to penalize people for living outdoors even if they have nowhere else to go.But that ruling was not an end to legal battles about homelessness in Grants Pass or around the country. Earlier this year, after the city council closed one of its two sanctioned camp sites, a new lawsuit was filed, leading a judge to order another injunction -- and the city council to re-open one of those sites.Scott Nelson is the board president of MINT, a homeless services nonprofit. Susan Clark is the executive director of Mid Rogue Foundation, a nonprofit focused on housing. Indra Nicholas is a city councilor and small business owner.  Brock Spurgeon is a tile contractor and one of the founders of Park Watch Grants Pass. They joined us in front of a live audience to talk about homelessness at the Performing Arts Center at Grants Pass High School on April 29

Town Meeting Day is a method of direct civic engagement and and a longstanding community building tradition. It's a time when Vermont's 247 municipalities each decide how they'll spend their local budgets. We begin by hearing about some significant votes taking place around the state. Vermont Public's Nina Keck talks about the Rutland mayoral race, and reporter Lexi Krupp explains Lyndon's vote to keep Town Meeting an in-person affair, rather than switch to Australian ballot. Then, we dig into the history of town meetings in Vermont with Middlesex town moderator Susan Clark. She is the co-author of many books about democracy in Vermont, including All Those in Favor: Rediscovering the Secrets of Town Meeting and Community. She discusses the times when Vermont towns voted on national and international issues that extended far beyond the purview of local budgets. Then, we share a 1982 NPR story by Leslie Breeding about a town meeting in Strafford. Broadcast live on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.

We're going to be sharing this episode today, which if you're listening in real-time, is shortly after President Biden stepped aside, not accepting the Democratic nomination and instead, getting behind his VP Kamala Harris - our country's first female VP, and first Asian and Black VP as well.    Today's episode is focused on acknowledging the contributions of people who came before Ruby Bridges, who we all think of when we think of school integration.  Little did we know that back in 1868 in Iowa, there was a young Black teen who was actually the first known person to integrate a school.  What would happen if we all read children books that included the story of Susan Clark?  How would knowing about our country's real history, with all its nuances, false starts, hope, and persistence change our understanding of where we are as a country today - and what it really will take to move it forward into a more tolerant, accepting, integrated, supportive, community-driven nation? Maybe it would teach us that history isn't linear, that backlashes do happen, but that the desire to fight is a sign that we all still hold onto hope, which is really what we need collectively now.   What to listen for: What's so important about understanding real history - in particular, the contribution of girls and women What the story of Susan Clark tells us about how change does NOT come easily, does not come linearly, and that history repeats itself. Why this story was written as a children's book About Joshalyn: Joshalyn Hickey-Johnson, aka Ms. Rocki, was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa, and attended Waterloo public schools. She is the mother of two and grandmother of seven. Ms. Rocki took on the challenge of working a traditionally male job at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and worked there for 30 years. She began writing books featuring real-life experiences from her children's lives as they were growing up. Her debut book, “GOOD MORNING, LOVEY!” was published in 2005, followed by “Travis It's NOT Your Birthday!” in 2008. She partnered with Chaveevah Ferguson, serving as a publicist with BaHar Publishing, the first African-American-owned book publishing company in Iowa. She co-authored “Ropes In The Kitchen” with her father, Naaman ‘Jock' Hickey. Ms. Rocki started NORTH END UPDATE, a weekly live interactive show highlighting good things in her local community and featured on Iowa Public Television's “Greetings from Iowa.” Since 2017, she has worked on the show with her best friend and co-host Chaveevah. Ms. Rocki recently hosted Iowa PBS's “Juneteenth: THE MOVEMENT.”

Cornelius Pieztner, currently a high-impact financial professional, spent the first 45 years of his life at Camphill - a network of intentional communities co-founded by his father Carlos Pietzner. The communities were designed for children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through his interactions and work with teenagers with pronounced developmental disabilities, Cornelius realized that his primary work was not to fix the "other", but to work on himself to cultivate tolerance, acceptance, and love. "The inner aspect of community" as he calls it, became one of the central inquiries of his life and work - "What would be needed for an aggregation of people to understand themselves and experience themselves as a community of people?" For more than 30 years, Cornelius has carried this inquiry into leading roles at the intersections of philanthropy, investment, social impact enterprises, transformative education focusing on the well-being of the planet, and commercial ventures toward a human-centered economy. Currently, he serves as the CEO of Alterra Impact Finance GmbH, an impact investment, management, and advisory firm in Switzerland with private equity investments in several European companies. Until 2021, he served as Managing Director of Mind & Life Europe, founded by the Dalai Lama. He also served as Chief Financial Officer on the Executive Board at the Goetheanum, General Anthroposophical Society, Switzerland (2002-2011), with affiliates in 90 countries and approximately 10,000 related institutions in agriculture, medicine, and therapy, (Waldorf) education, ethical banking and business, and the arts. He was the President of Camphill (life-sharing) Communities in North America. Growing up in a community that had no concept of individual ownership or income, Cornelius also developed a deep interest in understanding money and working with it in new ways to foster greater belonging. His earliest experiment was to set up a youth group fund with the principle, "put what you can, take what you need". His various leadership roles in finance have been guided by his vision of "positive economy" to catalyze a shift from consumerism to "enoughness", rationality to wisdom, and self-interest to compassion for others. Cornelius is also the steward of the Pietzner Art Collection, composed of over 1,500 artworks from his father and several other revolutionary artists. He is a partner at NOW Partners and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Karl Konig Institute in Berlin Germany, among other privately held European companies. He has also served on Advisory Boards for Gross National Happiness Center in Bhutan, B Corps Europe, Partnering for Global Impact, and OOOM World. He is the author and editor of several books (Candle on the Hill, Village Life) and presents on various topics in conferences internationally. Born in Northern Ireland in 1957 and having grown up in Pennsylvania, USA, he received his degree (Highest Honors) in Political Science from Williams College, Mass., and was awarded a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. Pietzner lives near Basel, Switzerland and Vienna, Austria. Join Birju Pandya and Susan Clark in conversation with this remarkable agent of change, impact investor, and community builder.

Murder by Decree is a 1979 mystery thriller directed by Bob Clark (Director of ‘Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things' and 'Dead of Night' (not the brilliant black and white British film from 1945 - featured in episode 13, but the 1974 American film ), he also directed ‘Black Christmas', ‘Porkys' and ‘Porkys 2' Murder by Decree was written by playwright John Hopkins, who scripted the Bond film Thunderball, and the Alec Guinness TV version of Smileys People. Hopkins referenced Conan Doyle's work, particularly Holmes' deduction and science skills but downplayed other aspects of the characters, such as Holmes' drug use, in favour of making them more likeable and human.Peter O'Toole was originally cast as Sherlock Holmes, and Sir Laurence Olivier was cast as Dr. Watson. But the two actors had not worked well together in the past, and were unable to overcome their differences for this movie. Rather, Holmes is played by Christopher (Captain Georg von Trapp) Plummer and Dr. Watson is played by James Mason.Plummer, described by IMDB as“ perhaps Canada's greatest thespian”, turned down the role of Gandalf in Sir Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and admits to regretting that decision. Question for James and Jon? Christopher Plummer had two roles in common with Peter Cushing, can you name them?James Mason reportedly, he once saved the life of Max Bygraves' son at a party at Judy Garland's house. The boy fell into the pool and Max did not notice. James Mason did and, fully clothed, he jumped into the water and pulled him out. He was scheduled to play James Bond in a 1958 television adaptation of "From Russia with Love", which was ultimately never produced. Later, despite being in his 50s, Mason was a contender to play Bond in Dr. No before Sean Connery was cast. He later turned down the role of Hugo Drax in the James Bond film Moonraker, which went to Michael Lonsdale. In his autobiography, "In Spite of Myself", Plummer noted that Mason was the best Watson he had seen, and that his death halted a proposed furthering of their on-screen partnership. The film also features:David Hemmings (Blow Up, Deep Red, Brabarella, Gladiator, Magnum Pi and Airwolf) as Inspector Foxborough, Anthony Quayle (Lawrence of Arbia, The Guns of Navarone) as Sir Charles Warren, Frank Finlay (Lifeforce, The Three Musketeers) as Inspector Lestrade, Geneviève Bujold as Annie Crook, Susan Clark as Mary Kelly, John Gielgud as Prime Minister Lord Salisbury, Donald Sutherland as Robert Lees and the Mighty June Brown as Anne ChapmanThe film's premise of the plot behind the murders is influenced by the book Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution, by Stephen Knight, who presumed that the killings were part of a Masonic plot. The original script contained the names of the historical suspects, Sir William Gull and John Netley. In the actual film, they are represented by fictional analogues: Thomas Spivy (Gull) and William Slade (Netley). This theory on the perpetrators of the killings is featured in a number of other Jack the Ripper-themed fictions, including the graphic novel ‘From Hell'.The replica nineteenth century dockland set took two months and fifty men to construct at Shepperton Studio's largest soundstage. Could it be that despite your fear, embracing the crazy or cracked parts of yourself might be immensely beneficial to your leadership? Let's face it; we've all been through our battles. Some are more severe than others. Consider this; the pain you are experiencing is not designed to break you but rather to break you open. What if you opened up and allowed yourself to fully experience that cracking, knowing that it is through those cracks the light could penetrate and illuminate what you may have hidden from yourself? “Too many cooks spoil the broth.” That’s the old adage—but could the opposite be true when it comes to politics? Researchers and writers Susan Clark and Tom Prugh say so. Their research into deliberative democracies show that inviting local communities to take responsibility for local governance improves engagement, depoliticises debate, and achieves excellent results. And the best thing about it? The more people see their impact in the community, the more responsibility they take—creating even better results every time. What’s even more exciting is the deliberative democracy model scales up. It may not be “fast”, like the political processes we live in today, but it might just be the model we need to empower citizens to confront the climate crisis and hold their leaders to account. What can we do to create more gender inclusivity in the workplace? Especially in entrepreneurship, the gender gap for funding and support is staggering. Only 3% of all venture capital funding goes to female entrepreneurs. This means that 97% of all the dollars that go to startups that become high impact, highly successful companies are founded by men. What can we do to change that gap? In this week's podcast episode, we are joined by Dr. Susan Clark Muntean. Susan teaches courses in Management, Organizational Behavior and Theory, Entrepreneurship, and Consulting. Art of Dynamic Competence: Creating Success in Changing Times

Deborah Jean Nielsen Honoring the Child 3/2/2222Susan Clark: [00:00:00] Well, welcome, Deborah, to the Art of Dynamic Competence. Deborah Nielsen: [00:00:03] Thank you, Susan. So glad to be here with you. Susan Clark: [00:00:06] It's great having you. We chose as a topic today to really talk about Self. I'd like to start out by having you explore why it is that we're talking about Self on this podcast called The Art of Dynamic Competence. Deborah Nielsen: [00:00:20] That's that's a good place to start, because from my perspective, it's not Self in the sense of let's be self centered, it's Self in the sense of what is our idea of what a Self is. The way I'm thinking about is from the inside out, right, looking at what is our core Self, what is that which drives us gives us a perspective of how to see the world, how to become more dynamically competent by grounding into really our core self more; so that gives you some idea. Susan Clark: [00:01:02] Great. And so as we get into this, I'd like for you to explore a little bit for our listeners. What are these aspects of Self that you feel are so critical that we're looking, we're going to explore today? Deborah Nielsen: [00:01:16] I think of it as the three key Self aspects, and they are universal. They are absolute. It is the adult, the child and the wise self. The adult is what is the operative daily Self who has the ability to choose actions, words, direction, path. Susan Clark: [00:01:43] Would you call that the more rational one? Deborah Nielsen: [00:01:45] Well, yes, but not only rational but absolutely rational is an important part. Yes. So the adult has the ability to make a rational decision about, OK, what is my course of action? Absolutely. Where the child might be smart, but not necessarily rational. Susan Clark: [00:02:06] So tell me a little bit about the wise one. Deborah Nielsen: [00:02:08] The wise one is intuition, moral compass, sense of just knowing without being able to explain exactly why I know. And it's also the bigger vision, the bigger picture. And so when we are stressed, sometimes in my experience, I've had that sense of, oh my gosh, it's like tunnel vision here. When we open up and can access the wisdom, there's a much bigger picture. We can see the broader vision of not only our own impact in our life, but how we're impacting others and how they're impacting us and what our sense of purpose can be, for example. Susan Clark: [00:02:54] Well, what is the role of this child, this little one? Connection, maybe to the wise one or going beyond our normal, rational functioning? What's the importance of this child? Deborah Nielsen: [00:03:07] The child Self has natural, beautiful, essential qualities, for example, the ability to just bond to build trust. That is what I believe. We're just born with ability to connect and trust. Unquestionably, then the child has wonder, or which is just like, Wow, Oh, Look at this tree, look at these leaves, look at this flower. It's just like everything's amazing. That opens up to a different kind of learning. And then also spontaneity, being able to just be in the flow. Mm hmm. Some days, of course, we're going to have crunchy, stressful days. But when we're in a flow, that's where what the child can easily access. So the child part of us can help us get into the flow. The child part of us can help us learn in a more holistic way. The child self can help us be creative. Susan Clark: [00:04:20] Well, does the child self then help us become more operational as adults? Deborah Nielsen: [00:04:26] Absolutely. And part of why the little self helps us to become more operational is

Susan and Clark were married in 1985, three months after they met. Six weeks after the wedding, Susan's daughter was taken away by social services and Clark was accused of sexually molesting Susan's 9-year-old daughter from her first marriage. Susan was told she had to force Clark to move out and support the allegation or she would never get her daughter back. The situation went from bad to worse to truly bizarre. Most relationships would not have withstood the stress, but instead of caving to the pressure, Susan and Clark fought back against the system, became activists, and started a national movement for family preservation. Thirty-six years later, they are still together living live in the country outside a small town in north Texas with their four chihuahuas. In collaboration with the charity Sands, this book supports grieving parents (and wider family and friends) after the tragedy of stillbirth and neonatal death. Few experiences can compare to the trauma and pain of losing a baby; and the wall of silence that often surrounds that loss can make grieving even harder. Loving You From Here explores the traumatic impact of losing a baby through stillbirth and neonatal death. It features the moving stories of multiple families; some affected recently, some decades ago, but still living with the loss. This book is a practical guide for grieving parents in the grips of tragedy, and those around them who want to be able to offer support. From managing those initial feelings of shock, grief, guilt and anger, this book will also show families how it is possible to grow around that grief and eventually form an enduring bond with their baby.

It’s another great show on the My Second Act semi-music podcast. This one has games, background and three advertisements.  First of all, what’s your checkout policy? During COVID, some folks are encouraging others to check yourselves out. That’s the advice that Donna wants to listen to. Caddy has some opposing views about who should be checking out who right now.  It’s game time in the Cadillac Jack nation. Before they play a live lightning round, Caddy and Donna introduce themselves to new listeners, providing some color for the ride they’re about to take. Familiarize yourself with backstories and the whole field of recurring characters, from Roscoe to Richard. Then, it’s time to play.  Susan Clark chimes in to the show today to take on Caddy in a 20 second pop culture trivia game called You Can’t Beat Jack. It’s a completely original and never before done broadca- er, podcast segment where quick-fire answers are the way to win. Tune in, shout out and then text Caddy about it. 7704646024.

Today’s episode of Cadillac Jack: My Second Act is a quick hit.  First off, Susan Clark intro’s the show. Not only does Susan Clark does she pipe us in, but comes with fighting’ words. Susan is the only person who has (allegedly) Beat Caddy twice. We can’t remember the old name, but we’ll have a rematch of You Don’t Know Jack to settle the score.  Donna and Caddy cover their feelings about upcoming holidays like Labor Day and Halloween.   After that, Donna tells Caddy about the time she was encouraged to steal Clarence Clemons’ hip replacement card. Spoiler Alert: she returned it to him.  The show fulfills the music portion of its Semi-Music Podcast classification by covering some upcoming songs. The first ones are upcoming classic Christmas songs covered by a few Country artists. Donna and Caddy are not fans. There’s a hunch that Tug Cowart isn’t either.  Then Donna talks about a new project from Chris Stapleton that features some folks from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  Caddy went on a Daddy / Daughter field trip this week. It was a little unconventional- the two went to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office and Morgue.  He shares the experience on the middle segment of today’s show.  Statesboro. Bullet County. It’s a new target for the White House. Caddy and Donna tackle the situation on the third major segment. Hear their thoughts on the school, the parents and the nation. It leads right into a discussion on some changes in national testing for schools and prep courses in the college application process.  Check out Caddy Wagon and Hustle, both podcasts are out now. When you’re done, tell us what you think. Find Caddy on Twitter @atlcadillac or text 770-464-6024.

When considering the desegregation of schools, it is generally believed that it started with the monumental Brown v Board of Education of Topeka decision in 1954. Many people are not aware that in 1868, the Iowa Supreme Court held that schools did not have the right to segregate based on race. This episode aims to spread knowledge on the girl that started it all, eighty-six years before the Supreme Court of the United States, a twelve-year-old Susan Clark from Muscatine, Iowa. Other topics in this episode include inequities in schools and the necessity of giving all students an equal education. In order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4, we have to ensure that the schools across our nation are fair, and that we are giving each student access to the same resources and opportunities they need to succeed. The children are our future. We must allow them to make the most of theirs. My guests on this episode of the Wealthy Wellthy podcast, CrisMarie Campbell and Susan Clark, are experts on conflict and communication in relationships. The pair met more than 20 years ago and they quickly hit it off, first as business associates working in the corporate world, helping companies enhance teamwork by understanding conflict in that setting. As they became a couple, they found that they were better able to understand and communicate with their clients about the conflict in couple’s relationships as well. CrisMarie and Susan share the different dynamics that are involved and the far-reaching impacts of embracing conflict in relationships. From the perspective of increased intimacy and fulfillment, their discussion was eye-opening when it comes to trusting the other person enough to be open and vulnerable with them and trust that they will reciprocate. They talked about healthy and unhealthy conflict and how it is important to define the lines that should not be crossed based on each person’s preferences and past experiences. We discuss the benefit of talking about these boundaries early in a relationship, and how having these tough conversations sooner, relationships are more primed to thrive through conflict.  One of the most interesting concepts that CrisMarie and Susan talked about, is focusing on yourself and your needs before trying to contribute to the relationship. They share that your relationship will be stronger when you are stronger individually first and willing to talk about your needs and desires with each other in an effort to make yourselves a stronger unit. There are no magic words for me to say.  I don’t even have to open my mouth, for God hears me, anyway. I know that God forgives me, as I forgive those who won’t. Join host, Greg Carlwood, of The Higherside Chats podcast, as he talks... with guest, Susan Clark. While we distract ourselves with Facebook or mindless television and damage our health with nutrient deficient foods the elite have been carefully crafting a full spectrum attack. Indeed, a war is raging and we find ourselves in a fight for our lives as an eco-genocide aims to depopulate the planet by depleting us of nourishment and bathing us in harmful radio-microwave frequency rays known to do damage down to microscopic levels. Fortunately, today's guest, Susan Clark, has dedicated years studying radio-frequency radiation bio-effects during her time spent as a research assistant for Harvard Medical School, and today, she joins The Higherside to help us understand these ongoing project against the people. 3:30 Kicking things off, Greg and Susan begin by discussing her work as a research assistant at Harvard's medical school, the vast array of published papers and medical studies Countway Library afforded her, and the endless paper trail that led her to researching radio-frequency radiation bio-effects. As Susan explains, there has been extensive research conducted studying radio-frequency radiation bio-effects, to the tune of 25,000 and dating as far back as the late 1920's, in an effort to weaponize this technology. Clark also describes how this technology disrupts our natural biological chemistry, known in Eastern philosophy as Ch'i or qi. 14:42 Clark discusses the belief held by ancient Eastern mystics that our natural energy levels or power, are slowly being depleted by the abundance of unnatural radiation signals. She also elaborates on how size of life radiation in it's cosmic form is easily absorbed by water in the atmosphere, rendering it utterly harmless and mostly nonexistent to us on Earth. Greg and Susan also tackle the looming nationwide installation of the 5G network and the inevitable bio-effects that will wreak havoc. 22:45 Greg and Susan discuss the subtle encroachment of radio frequency waves, and how this has led to a false sense of security regarding devices such as cell phones, WiFi routers, and cell towers. Clark explains the gradual psychological adjustments we make to these seemingly harmless symptoms, our reliance on aids such as caffeine to jump start ourselves, and our dismissal of cognitive impairment as "senior moments". Susan details the shift in mentality towards a more idiopathic perspective, causing us to look inward and instead of focus of the bombardment of exterior influences damaging our health and well-being. 31:00 Greg and Susan consider the results of the National Toxicology Program's $25 million study on the bio-effects of radio-frequency radiation exposure and the somewhat unsurprising links found to cancer. 40:00 Greg and Susan pivot to talking about the weaponization of these radio-frequencies. With public health science papers using terminology such as "harvesting", one has to wonder, what exactly is up their sleeve? Clark details the multitude of ways the elite proceed to rake up the body count, while going unnoticed, including capitalizing on natural catastrophes such as the most recent hurricane spree. With plenty of fresh powder on the ground, we look at how climate change is changing our region’s ski industry; and learn why the sport now comes with such a high price tag. We also hear about how Providence, Rhode Island is grappling with being a “sanctuary city.” And we get inside the unique, intensely democratic process that is a New England town meeting. A view from Bigrock Mountain Ski Area in Mars Hill, in northern Maine. Climate scientists say ski resorts in northern New England may benefit from an increase in visitors as climate change shortens the ski season to the south. Photo by Martin Cathrae via Flickr Upscale, Downhill The late-winter nor’easter that dumped snow across New England on Tuesday and Wednesday was a welcome sight to the region's ski areas, which have been seeing shortening ski seasons in the past decade, due to climate change. According to University of Waterloo climate scientist Daniel Scott, no ski area in southern New England will remain profitable after 2040. As Maine Public Radio’s Fred Bever reports, ski areas in northern New England could benefit. A hand-painted sign hangs on the wall at the Veterans Memorial Recreation Area in Franklin, New Hampshire. Photo courtesy of NHPR. Skiing is a pricey hobby. A lift ticket at Sugarloaf in Maine will run you $95. At Stowe in Vermont, it’s $124 for the day. Even at Ski Sundown, a small mountain in Connecticut, a ticket on a Saturday or Sunday costs $60. But at Veterans Memorial Ski Area in Franklin, New Hampshire, admission is just $20. Instead of a chair lift, there's a metal bar that goes behind the thighs, attached to a rope that pulls skiers up the 230-foot hill. Once upon a time, these no-frills ski areas were the rule in New England, rather than the exception. So what happened? The team at New Hampshire Public Radio’s podcast Outside/In went to Franklin to figure out how skiing “got fancy.” For more fun on the slopes, listen to the full Outside/In episode, “Gnar Pow.” Whose Sanctuary is it Anyway? Guests at Rhode Island Public Radio’s “Policy and Pinot” discussion on March 9. From left: Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, immigration law professor Deborah Gonzalez, Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare, RI Republican National Committeewoman Lee An Sennick, and NEXT host John Dankosky. Photo by Kristen Gourlay for RIPR President Donald Trump has pledged to crack down on so-called sanctuary cities — jurisdictions that shield undocumented residents from federal immigration officials, mainly by refusing to comply with requests for local law enforcement to help enforce immigration law. Under Trump's January 25 executive order, these cities could lose federal funding. The president and his supporters say the order is an attempt to improve public safety. But advocates claim that people living in the United States without documentation are more often victims of crime. They say that when police cooperate with federal immigration officials, community trust is eroded. Earlier this month, NEXT host John Dankosky moderated a forum about sanctuary cities in Providence, Rhode Island; where Mayor Jorge Elorza, like other urban mayors, has voiced open opposition to the order. Elorza and other panelists debated where local law enforcement ends and federal law enforcement begins. Listen to the full event audio from Rhode Island Public Radio. Explore stories about immigration in New England from the New England News Collaborative series Facing Change. “We are the Government” This past Tuesday was Town Meeting Day in New Hampshire. And while some towns rescheduled because of the big winter storm, New Hampshire’s Secretary of State there said the law requires towns to hold their local elections on the second Tuesday in March, regardless of the weather. In Newmarket, school board candidates and many voters toughed it out. New Hampshire Public Radio's Jason Moon reports. Candidates and survivors braved the elements Tuesday in New Market, NH. Photo by Jason Moon for NHPR. While residents of towns like Newmarket cast ballots, other New England towns hold traditional town meetings. That’s when citizens gather in a church or school gym to debate, deliberate and ultimately vote on a budget, and other municipal business. Town meeting is a tradition unique to New England in the United States, and goes back to colonial times. But an increasing number of towns are giving up the public debate in favor of a ballot-based system. So, is the tradition worth preserving? On Vermont’s Town Meeting Day, Vermont Public Radio's Howard Weiss-Tisman sat in on a town meeting where the future of town meeting was up for debate. Meeting-goers in Tunbridge, Vermont cast paper ballots in a non-binding vote over whether to oppose a new residential development. Depending on town rules, votes can also be cast verbally or by a show of hands. Photo by Rebecca Sananes for VPR. So what’s so special about town meeting, and just how much power do attendees hold? For answers, we’re joined by Susan Clark, author of All Those in Favor: Rediscovering the Secrets of Town Meeting and Community, and Slow Democracy. Clark serves as moderator at her town meeting in Middlesex, Vermont. In Woodstock, NH, chickens in the road are no laughing matter. Photo by Angela N. via Flickr. And in Woodstock, New Hampshire, population 1,400, the main issue of town meeting this year was trespassing… by chickens. There's no state law regarding the caging of fowl in New Hampshire, and some residents’ chickens have been roaming onto neighbors' property, and even blocking traffic. How was the chicken fight resolved? No spoilers: you’ll just have to listen. About NEXT NEXT is produced at WNPR. Vicky, Nolan and Jill aren't totally dismayed by Disney's attempt at a western here, but mostly because it gave us an excuse to talk about HBO's Deadwood. So grab yourselves some apple dumplings of your own, and try to keep them down as Vicky describes Don Knotts' fish lips, and enjoy another episode of We Want The D!

“We look at the rise of tablets as an opportunity to get more people to read The Economist. Not as a threat to our print profitability,” siger Susan Clark, som er ugens gæst i MediaCast.
