Implacable is an adjective that means unstoppable or relentless. The origin of our word of the day is the Latin word placare (pla CAR ay) which means ‘to calm’ or ‘to soothe.’ The prefix I-M is used to indicate ‘not’ or in this case, ‘cannot be.’ Something that cannot be calmed or soothed is implacable. For example: Our team’s implacable spirit may have been the reason we won the championship. We may not have had much talent, but we compensated with our relentless drive.

Busting the "Balance" Myth

Andrew Petty is Dying

If you’re looking for more “balance” in your life, then I’m sorry to say that you’ve come to the wrong place. I’m not your guy. I think our modern pursuit of “balance” is for the birds, and I think there’s a much better way.    What We Really Want If you’re anything like me--like most humans, in fact--you’d like a little more balance in your life. My coaching clients frequently want more balance in their lives. What I mean when I say “balance” is similar, I think, to what a lot of us mean if we’re really honest: Freedom from stress and strain, to weather the ups and downs and corkscrews and constant demands of life with unflustered grace, calm, and ease, to become an impregnable fortress of serenity that nothing and no one can topple or disturb.  We’re tempted to think that if we can just crack the code on “balance,” it’ll be smooth sailing from then on and we’ll be impervious to future stress, strain, and fatigue--floating zen-like in an unflustered way through life.    The Real Failure There are plenty of respected, respectable, and prominent voices out there telling us that balance IS achievable. This three-part formula or that 6-week course will help you achieve the balance that you desire AND deserve.  Persuaded that “balance” is not only desirable but also attainable, we beat ourselves us up over the fact that we’ve failed to achieve it. And then we re-double our efforts. Maybe with a few tweaks here and there, a little more yoga, a perfected morning routine, a great journaling practice, sticking to my nutrition plan, etc. etc….Maybe then I will indeed achieve a rarified state of balance that makes me serenely impervious to all that life might throw at me.  I think our real failure, though, is not a failure to achieve balance. I think our real failure is believing that balance is possible in the first place.  We’re chasing a mirage that always stays just out of reach. And we can spend a lifetime chasing the mirage--trying to rise permanently above the gritty, grimy, unpleasant, and dangerous parts of life--all the while forgetting to actually live.    Can you relate to this longing for balance?  Life is hard, and it can be exhausting--even in the best of times. We want some rest. We want some relief. And if that relief could be sustainable, even permanent? Well that would be amazing!    The Problem With Balance The problem, though, is that our desire for permanent relief--for uninterrupted balance--doesn’t match the reality of life as a human being on planet earth. Life continually exerts unbalancing forces upon us.  On a normal day in a normal week for many of us, life as a human being on planet earth includes some or all of the following: Our Significant Other wants and needs us. Our kids want and need us. Our job wants and needs us. Our health needs attention, our house needs some TLC, and our friends want to be with us, too.  Those are just a few of the normal and good things competing for our time and energy. They create tension in our lives, if you think of tension in the purest sense: a strained state or condition resulting from forces acting in opposition to each other. Add to those normal things some of the other, less welcome things that can create tension in our lives, and you’ve got a system under sometimes enormous stress and strain: sickness, injury, economic uncertainty, job loss, and social unrest, for example. How about a global pandemic? That’s fun. And let’s not forget our old and our ancient foe, Death--who never shows up at a good time or when we expect it. It’s easy to feel pulled in a kazillion different directions even on a very average day.    Strive for Balance...Get the Opposite It’s really interesting to me that some of the people I know who strive the hardest for balance in the midst of all of these tension-inducing forces are also some of the least peaceful people I know.  I’M that guy when I try to pursue perfect balance and someone or something threatens to unbalance me.  What’s that about?  My hunch is that the relentless pursuit of balance produces very much the opposite. That any semblance of balance achieved is so fragile and fleeting that we can actually become hostile to anyone or anything that threatens it. And intensely unhappy at the same time with the fragility of the balance we’ve achieved.    A Better Way When the balance that we want doesn’t match the reality of life as a human being on planet earth, then we have at least a couple of options: We can ignore reality and demand irrationally that it bend to our will. We can keep chasing that mirage. OR, we can accept reality and find a better way.  I vote that we accept reality and find a better way.  So, let’s stop chasing balance and commit to getting better at managing life’s many tensions, instead.    Bridges: A Metaphor for a Better Way Bridges are amazing structures. They allow us to cross formidable gaps by successfully managing two forces--tension and compression. Engineers have devised various ways of managing these forces over the millenia. No engineer, however, has ever devised a way to eliminate these forces altogether. For a bridge to span the gap from “here” to “there,” tension and compression must be successfully managed 24/7. In fact, the bridge is ABLE to span the gap because of those forces.  I think this is a great metaphor for what it’s like to live in the real world. We’re like a bridge--constantly encountering and redistributing the forces that act upon us to bridge the gap between where we are and where we want to go. Sometimes we do that well. Other times, not as well. Unlike the unattainable mirage of perfect balance--which will always remain just out of reach, no matter how hard we try--we CAN get better at managing life’s tensions. Like a bridge, we can upgrade our engineering in response to the many forces acting upon us. I like the idea of putting my time and energy into something I can actually get better at when I put in the work. BTW, have you ever seen video of a bridge undulating violently in the wind? Massive concrete and steel structures actually convulsing and rippling and even breaking apart when certain wind conditions exploit flaws in their engineering. Weaknesses in their ability to encounter and redistribute the focus action upon them. It’s unbelievable to watch.  I felt like one of those bridges a couple times this week, in fact.    Tension’s Here to Stay There’s always tension in the system, so to speak. It’s not going away as long as we’re above ground and breathing. And in my experience, if we stay in the game, the amount of tension in the system only increases over time. When we stop and really think about it, like in the case of the bridge, it’s good that these tensions exist. We feel pulled between our work and our family, for example. It creates tension. But we would never want either one of those sources of tension to go away forever. So our best option is to actively manage the tension that’s created by the two opposing forces pulling on us. Sometimes that might mean giving more attention to your family and less to work, or vice versa.  I can make those adjustments and redistribute the forces acting upon me when I’m consciously and actively engaged in managing those tensions. A bridge actively absorbs and redistributes the forces acting upon it in real-time, all day long--like wind and water and traffic. But if I’m insistent upon achieving balance--if I’m insistent upon life cooperating with certain very specific conditions in order for me to be okay--then the slightest source of imbalance is an existential threat.    A Simple 3-Step Process! So here’s your three-step process to becoming a master at managing life’s tensions...  Ha. Just kidding. I think you know it doesn’t work that way.  Managing life’s many tensions is the ongoing work of a lifetime. As you train yourself to stay in the tension rather than flee toward some elusive, unattainable notion of balance, you grow in your ability to manage the tensions more and more effectively. And as you grow, life will inevitably add more weight to the bar. Then you’ll put in the work to upgrade your engineering in response to those new forces.    Busted! The myth of balance? Busted. Commit to the work of managing life’s many tensions instead. As you do, day by day you will become the person you were made to be and live the life you were made to live.    More Mileage from the Metaphor Let’s see if we can squeeze some more mileage out of this bridge metaphor...What kind of bridge are you? How do you know? What conditions are you made to function in best? What kind of maintenance do you need, and when? Who’s on your maintenance team? Do you need other people on your maintenance team? Do you need to let some of your maintenance people go? Do you need other tools to keep yourself in good working order? Do you have unnecessary sources of tension in your life--creating tension that you aren’t meant to have to manage?  A powerful coaching partnership helps you answer these and many other foundational questions so you’re even better equipped to manage life’s many tensions. It’s one of my greatest joys as a coach to support people in this part of their journey.    Let’s Talk You and I might be a good fit to do this work together. Let’s talk! BE Right or GET IT Right? 3 Mindset Strategies

BE RIGHT OR GET IT RIGHT? Do you ever find yourself arguing with your teens over . . . nothing? Or maybe having the same kind of argument, over and over? If that describes you, chances are, what those disagreements really about is one thing: being right. Here’s the thing: it is sooooo developmentally appropriate for teens to want to prove the adults in their lives wrong. And I don’t know about you, but when someone is trying to call me out – especially my teenager! – my back goes up and start defending myself. Trying to prove that I’M right. IT’S DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE FOR TEENS TO WANT TO BE RIGHT ALL THE TIME – BUT NOT FOR YOU You might recognize your teen in some of the following descriptions because these are ways that developmental appropriateness manifests: Fighting perceived injustices Brutally calling out stuff that we, as adults, know to whisper Calling us out when our words don’t match our actions If we want to connect with teens, we have to meet them where they are, which means we have to be fully developed adults. And fully developed adults aren’t as concerned with BEING right as they are GETTING IT right. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING RIGHT AND GETTING IT RIGHT Here’s the difference: Needing to BE right: Creates feelings of shame when you make a mistake or are “wrong” Flips you into fight-flight-freeze when you’re accused of being wrong and tries to shut down the other party Takes personal offense when accused of being wrong Motivates you to defend yourself, your ideas, your actions, etc. Affects your identity when you are “wrong” Wanting to GET IT right: Shifts your perspective to view mistakes as learning opportunities Opens you to having your thoughts and ideas challenged Enables you to listen to and fairly evaluate other points of view Asks questions when you’re challenged, so you can better understand the other person’s ideas, thoughts, and opinions Separates your actions, thoughts, and ideas from your core identity Recognizes the developmentally appropriate methods teens use to challenge us and responds to the ideas vs. the delivery TRUTHS REVEALED When we dig a little deeper into the need to BE right, it can reveal some surprising truths about what’s going on underneath the surface. That need can be the manifestation of insecurity. Of wanting to people-please and have others think highly of you. Of a blind spot you may have. Shifting your mindset to GET IT right gives you freedom. From shame. From the stress of perfectionism. Freedom to ask for help and guidance when there’s something you don’t know or understand. But How do you make that shift? Here are some strategies I’ve used: Use The Thought Model The Thought Model will help you examine your thinking around being right. Unintentional Thought Model Circumstance – Someone pointed out I made a mistake/ got something wrong Thought – when I’m wrong, people think less of me, don’t respect me Feeling - shame Action – I lash out at my “accuser” in a personal way Result - Connection is broken and the relationship is damaged Intentional Thought Model Circumstance - Someone pointed out I made a mistake/ got something wrong Thought – I can learn something here Feeling – curiosity Action – I ask questions to get more information and clarity Result – Connection is built, the relationship is strengthened Practice getting it wrong Visualize how you want to handle it when you get it wrong. Imagining those steps might look like: Taking a deep breath. Asking a question for clarity. Agreeing with your accuser. Apologizing, if necessary. Journal to retrain your brain Affirmations can feel cheesy – like Stuart Smalley on Saturday Night Live. BUT – the truth is that repetition can retrain your brain. Write down statements as if they’re already true Write them EVERY DAY Example: I’m comfortable and at ease when I get something wrong because that means I’m learning and growing. Using any one of these three strategies is going to bring you closer to your teens (really, closer in ALL your relationships) and will foster an atmosphere that encourages risk-taking and growth. When you normalize failure, getting something wrong, and making mistakes, you’re giving everyone around you the permission to do the same.

I created the foundation for the beat cutting up pieces of Courtney Love's breathing and screaming, and worked with a producer called Bibz in New York, and then took it to DoNormaal in Seattle to write and record the rest of the song, so its journey has been a very unique one. In this episode Corey asks Chris, "The other leaders that you've observed from being an investor or executive or being you know board member CEO, do you want to surround the issue and debate for the sake of maximizing all the different off-ramps that you could take or is it genuinely from a science level scientific level that you have your flag?"This leads to Chris talking about the three stages of your business or career, he says, "I'd like to think of myself as the guy who insists that we go science first. And if you're going to go science first. That means you have to be ready to do experiments and experiments are very well understood. We know how to do experiments been doing a lot of science for a long time. That means you've got to be math first because doing experiments that don't have a shot mathematically is ridiculous and you shouldn't do that.So you got to keep the number of experiments down to a minimum and cram them in a small amount of time for a small amount of cost. I'm not a fan of internal debate for a long period of time. I think you debate just long enough to determine one of three states. And I think we should all consider this as a way to run our lives. Not that I'm here to tell people how to run their lives, but what the heck. So we're in one of three states. I think this is sort of mathematical truth or truth of life state number one is we're in flow. And when we're in flow, we should stay in flow. That's, that's just a great policy when it's working. To start to invent new thoughts or new strategies or new ways of holding the racquet in tennis, you need to adjust, you go change your shoes so you can play better. You're in flow, and you stay in flow. What would be the point of developing great skills and I'm not continuing to use them. When the road keeps paving itself in front of you, all you have to do is stay on the path.Don't fall, don't talk about it. Don't think about it, just go do it and keep your eyes open, but go ahead and crash into something that's okay. That takes us to the second state we're in often. That is a state that I call stuck. I love the word stuck because it actually colloquially means what the state means which is, 'I'm stuck.' I actually can't move forward, but it's not normally because I've lost my motive power. It's not like my legs fell off. It's because I don't know which way to go. And when we're stuck. We can do something and it's really clean and organizations have a hard time doing and individuals have a hard time doing it but organizations have a harder time because we have to admit, we're stuck and stuck is synonymous with. We don't know. We don't know what to do. And if there's anything that I would advise young entrepreneurs. to get comfortable with, it's the fact that often you don't know what to do and a thing to do. I describe it as the period for me where I personally never really doubted that the claims of Jesus were true, I did experientially wonder if they mattered and if they mattered to me. Through some significant moral failure, and realizing that I was less happy... and more ashamed, living the way I was living. Finally I had my 'I'm gonna follow Jesus, not just because my parents said', but for myself in early college. And it was really because I started to think about who I was becoming.  I realized I don't like who I'm becoming, but I like who my dad is. I like who my parents are. And just because they modeled a life of following Jesus." 7:22You have said, "My habits wrecked me." Share with our listeners a little about what life looked like for you early in your law career and how that led you to develop habits of purpose. "I look back now and I think the house of my life was very sincerely decorated with the Christian content of calling, but I look back now and I also realize that the architecture of that life was exactly like everyone else's. I completely assimilated to all the typical practices of a top 20 law school, an aspiring young lawyer, just busy all the time. Always waking up earlier. Always staying up later. Always adding more. And that worked in a sense. I graduated around the top of my class and got my dream job at an international law firm doing mergers and acquisitions. And, you know, life was going well, of course, until it wasn't." "How is it that this missionary to law and business became converted to the nervous medicating warrior, and especially in such a short order? The answer for me...was by habit.... After about a year of this, I realized that my my body and my mind, and all the anxiety that wrecked it, was happening because I had finally become converted to the anxiety and the nervousness and the busyness that my habits and routines worshiped. I was being formed in anxiety even while I was in my head clinging to the gospel piece of calling." "I think our cultural moment is familiar with the significance of worldview. For example, what we believe about the world has a serious impact on our life. But I do think we're less acquainted with the idea that the practical ways we live have significant impact on who we become." "Our brain becomes attuned to certain habit activity such that our head thinking can go one way, but our habit activity can go the other way and that's very normal. Then, I started digging into the theology of this and realizing that when your head goes one way and your habit goes the other way your heart follows the habit." "It is possible to believe all the right things, but but very unwittingly, worship idols of productivity, busyness, exhausting yourself to earn the approval of others just through the little habits of the ways you check your emails or never turn off your devices or never schedule a day off." 16:02 The Common Ruleis a way for people to practice formational habits together and today we are primarily going to talk about digital habits. You write, "The smartphone is a tool that enables many things, but it will never multiply our presence." What do you encourage others to do to begin practicing presence? One hour with phone off "We are often connected to people, but we are very rarely actually present with people." 19:22One of the daily habits you recommend is Scripture before phone.  Why do you recommend that? Scipture before phone "I recommend that and almost everything else I recommend, because of the ways I fail at it." "We wake up and our heads are asking our phone a really simple question, which is what do I need to do today? But our hearts...this is not totally conscious, or verbalized even, our hearts are asking a really different question, who do I need to become today in order to be lovable? Anything will be happy to answer that question for us, especially the phone." "Whether we approach our phones looking for love or set out to them to share love makes a world of difference in how we use them. For me, the practice of Scripture before phone is one of those keystone habits to help check myself on what I'm doing when I go to my phone." Many of you are in financial transition right now. You've lost jobs, income, stable housing. And you're worried about what's to come. And this time of uncertainty isn't just bringing up thoughts about financial survival. It's also making us question our values, our identities...and whether the way we’ve done things in the past is still going to work. All of that can be difficult to process, especially as we're in isolation. So we're calling on an expert for help: financial therapist Amanda Clayman. For the next three weeks, Amanda's going to be talking with some of you about those issues that are surfacing around money in your lives—and helping you process them and figure out a path forward.  "It's not a luxury to think about and to pay attention to the meaning of losing 80 to 90% of your income because for some of us, that's enough to send us into such a, an emotional tailspin that we aren't able to do...practical things," Amanda told me. "We, we are just stuck in feeling like, 'I'm a failure. This is never going to get any better.'" Listen to Financial Therapy with Amanda Clayman, starting on May 20 in the Death, Sex & Money podcast feed.

Pastor Doug and I chat about the heart attack that changed his life.  He began the journey out of workaholism toward healthy boundaries and consistent practice of Sabbath rest. The Heart Attack that Saved My Life by Doug Gamble 6:08 Share a little of your faith journey with us.  How did you come to know Jesus? "I love the church. I'm quite familiar with all of its flaws and faults, because we're not perfect people. But I do love the church, what it can do what it has done, I still think it's God's best plan on earth." 10:45 There was a point in your pastoral life years ago, where you were just burning it at both ends. Share with us a little bit about what happened during that season in your life? "Religious addiction is not like drugs or alcohol...you know, people like when you're doing good and yet it has the same toxic effect. Workaholism, like most other things, involves lying and stealing. In this case, you're lying and stealing time that should be spent with God, with your wife, with your kids, and you're not practicing good boundaries, like we've learned are so important." "I had a Christian cardiologist, so I went back to him... [he said,] 'I'm going to help fix your heart, but you and your elders are going to have to totally change your life. You can't be coming in here to my office at 49 as a missions pastor with a heart problem, you're not living right'." "The reason Sabbath has become so meaningful to me is it's really not well understood in the Protestant world. We think Sabbath as you go to church on Sunday, then you watch football or you go out to the beach or you do whatever you do in the summer or in the winter. [But] discovering the Sabbath is as Jesus said in one of his parables, man wasn't made for the Sabbath, the Sabbath was made for man. And what that means is we need it more than we realize. We tend to think it's a duty. It's not a duty. It's a one day in seven to live differently, so that you can be different the other six days of the week." In many of my keynotes, I informally poll the audience on if they view themselves as leaders or not.   On average less than 1/3 of those polled actually raise their hand. Here are some of the typical responses from those who didn't raise their hand: "I don't have the title or position." "I'm not the main leader." 'I'm waiting until I get to the top, then I'll lead." "I'm in the middle (or bottom)  of the company" "What I do makes no difference to the bottom line." This is probably the biggest misconception about leadership; this belief that leadership comes from having a position or title. That you can’t lead if you’re not at the top. In reality, leadership isn't something you wait around for.  It's all about influence.  And to become influential you must intentionally add value to everyone, in every situation. When you grasp this concept you will start to see how leadership is all about choice, and that you can begin to lead from where you're at right now.  No position or title is needed. In this episode, we deep dive into how we can shift our mindset and start adding value no-matter where we are in our lives. Great leadership is learned, and great leaders are made, from the middle and below in organizations.  It's down in the trenches where real leadership challenges are met and solved. It's about having the consistency & courage to meet these challenges head-on, at the lower levels, and being prepared when the higher leadership calling presents itself. We all have way more influence than we realize.  Once we become aware of this potential, we then realize that even though good leadership starts at the top, it's the middle & below that will take it across the finish line.

Rachel’s 'Hands Free Mama' mentality is all about finding balance in a media-saturated, perfection-obsessed world. And it’s about seizing the little moments that life offers us to engage in real and meaningful interaction. In this episode, Rachel shares realizing she 'd lost connection with her people. How she believed a lie that in order to be loved and accepted she needed to hide certain parts of herself, the messy parts, the imperfect parts. A pivotal moment happened when she vulnerably shared these thoughts with her daughter and found acceptance. “Opening that door to being human actually brings us closer together. Then we can connect from that place of 'I'm struggling' and that doesn't mean there's something wrong with me. That doesn't mean I need to hide it. It means I need to reach out and talk to someone about this so we can work together to see how we might go forward.” We dive into what Rachel’s learned in her parenting journey as a mom of teens and preteens. She talks about how choosing true connection with our kids can bring them closer to us and keep the lines of communication open as they grow up.  “This is all about redefining what our role is as a parent. It is not the authoritarian model anymore. It is the guide, the truth teller and the encourager. Not the enforcer, not the half listener, not the critic. That those roles are only going to get us further and further from each other when the idea is right now we need to come closer.” Connect with Rachel:  Website:  handsfreemama.com Facebook: facebook.com/TheHandsFreeRevolution Instagram:  @handsfreerevolution Twitter: @handsfreemama FREE LIVE LOVE NOW LISTENING PLAN:  Click here for special 7-day listening plan for Don’t Mom Alone Listeners Links Mentioned:   Live Love Now [BOOK] Only Love Today [BOOK] Amy McCready--Positive Parenting Solutions Pre-order Bonuses--21-Day Self-Care Listening Plan AND 4 Downloadable Tools for Connection (Ask “Heart Questions vs. Performance Questions”; Practice phrases that take you “From Conflict to Calm”; Consider if you are an “Easy-to-Be-Around Adult”; Exclusive Phone Lock Screen - “Connecting by Protecting”) Featured Sponsor: LittlePassports.com Use Code DMA to save 15% off a subscription.

Seneca’s life is worth looking at for anyone who thinks they missed their shot, who thinks it might be “too late” for them. Because in his early twenties, just as his career as a lawyer was taking off, Seneca was struck with a terrible blow of tuberculosis. He was sent away by his doctors to Egypt, where he spent the next ten years recovering. Eventually, he returned to Rome, and though many would have suspected his window had closed, he quickly made a name for himself as a politician and a philosopher. Then, just as his career was taking off, he was banished to Corisca on trumped up charges by jealous enemies. There he had to spend eight years, eight years of the prime of his life, on an island far away from home. Yet, he eventually returned to Rome, rebuilt and remade himself, and soon found himself one of the most powerful men in the world, advising the Emperor. You might be sensing where this is going, but once again, at the height of his influence, he was forced to retire from Nero’s service, as the Emperor became increasingly unstable. Still, Seneca managed to re-dedicate himself to philosophy and publish some of his most brilliant works. What Seneca’s life proves is something much more bluntly phrased in Gary Vaynerchuk’s viral video, “You’ve Got Fucking Time.” It might feel like you are too old, that things have not turned out like you planned, that you’ve been royally screwed by bad luck. And that may be so—but the fact remains that you still have time. You can still make something of this life. You can still be grateful for whatever—and how much ever—time you have left. What if you had just woken up from a coma? What if you had just gotten exonerated and released from death row? What if you’d found out your cancer was in remission? Would you be thinking 'I'm getting a late start' or ‘woe is me?” Or would you be thinking, 'I'm so lucky. This is the beginning of my new life'? There is no too late, not as far as ordinary life goes; just get started. Or get back to work. That’s all we can do.
