This week the Two Idiots are joined by Brittany Penner, and as the episode number suggests, it's a great one! We briefly discuss her experiences as a doctor dealing with Covid in the Southeast, and move on to chat about the challenges growing up as an indigenous person adopted into a Mennonite family, finding her identity (and her birth family), her recent essays featured in Macleans, the Globe and Mail, and Huffington Post about those experiences, racism, and ADHD (Reg and Randy both almost definitely have it), Randy's thoughts about his own birth dad, and so much more! We had a powerful conversation and we look forward to having Brittany back soon! Enjoy! ResourcesContact us at workinprogressblogs@gmail.com Interview summary Find Brittany here: LinkedIn, instagram✍︎✍︎✍︎"I owe so much of my career to just really valuing people and connections."✍︎✍︎✍︎From Clinical Therapist to Corporate Global Recruiter to Entrepreneur, Brittany's purpose is to use mindset strategies to help others discover their purpose and pivot into meaningful careers. In 2015, she left clinical therapy and she talked to us about what she learned along the way. As a recruiter, she cannot stress enough the importance of networking "when you don't have to". In graduate school she took a two-week internship at a real estate developer company and when she met the President of Sales while getting coffee in the kitchen, she debated whether she should introduce herself and make a connection. Most people in the same situation would have passed on the opportunity because this was such a short internship in an unrelated field, but she thought, "I have nothing to lose from this. I'm going to talk to him!" Brittany introduced herself and turned in her resume even though she wasn't expecting to hear back. Years later, while working as a clinical therapist, she got a call and was offered an unexpected role that she had no prior experience in. This is how Brittany got her foot in the door in recruiting. Today, she is a Talent Acquisition Manager at L'Oreal and an entrepreneur. ✍︎✍︎✍︎We have more interviews on our podcast! Head over there to check out more interesting stories. For many people, the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis was the latest graphic instance of a Black American being killed by the police -- and his homicide the most recent national example of historic, institutional discrimination against people of color and indigenous groups. Our colleagues at Call to Mind -- an APM / MPR initiative to inform and mobilize new conversations about mental health -- recently put a spotlight on the trauma of Black Americans and how it intersects with policing. This episode with Rev.Brittany Cane-Conley was recorded pre-pandemic and is as relevant today as it was back in February- trauma leaves a mark that we actively have to work with and on and the tools for one may work for another. The systems of white supremacy that this country was built upon never went away they have only grown more adept at hiding themselves. Charlottesville isn’t a one off and just like Charlottesville this pandemic is shining a bright light on systems of oppression that have been there all along - we can choose to look and not go back to “the way it was” or we can bury our heads in the sand for convenience sake and loose an opportunity for deep change Find Brittany @ https://instagram.com/reverendsmash?igshid=1l1d48igvlvb7 and the lighthouse foundation https://www.lighthousechicago.org/events/lighthouse-foundation-caucus-meeting-2 music by Todd Fadel follow me at angiefadel.com or talk to me on instagram @angiefadelsoulcare --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

As a Kentucky native, Brittany had her life planned to perfection. And even though she climbed to the highest ranks of woman's softball at the University of Louisville, her aspirations for a perfect life and marriage quickly turned into a struggle for survival. After escaping the adversity of an abusive relationship, she spent four years rebuilding the life she most longed for. Now, as a trained life and mindset coach, Brittany works with women who are struggling to find self-worth, identity, confidence, direction, and faith. She is now making it her life’s mission to help as many women as possible and help to provide them with the hope they are searching for. I could not be more excited to share my good friend, Brittany Boccher with you. She was the 2017 AFI Military Spouse of the Year and has been traveling the country investing in military spouse by helping them define their identity and purpose. Originally, Brittany defined her purpose by advocating for special needs families as she has a son with multiple medical issues. However, she soon found that a bigger issue is plaguing our community- a lack of identity. Brittany continues to advocate for EFMP families, but her passion for helping spouses reclaim who they are and find new purpose has resulted in her partnering with the USO to create a workshop and workbook titled Discovering Your Spark. After the results from my latest survey came back showing the same issue, I knew I had to have Brittany on to talk about not only what she was finding as she sits down with spouses face to face, but also what she has discovered herself is a way to find our way back to ourselves again. Self care is becoming a bit of a buzz word lately, and the first thing we tend to think of when we hear about it is massages and bubble baths. Some of us don't like baths, and both of those activities are costly in either time, money or both. It's not something that the average person has time for on a daily basis. That's why I was so excited when I hopped on the phone with my fellow #girlboss friend Brittany of Wild Woman Strong a couple of months ago when she started telling me about her latest and greatest idea. She had come up with 12 Pillars of Self Care, and they break down self care in a way that makes you realize how simple it can be to add in regularly. Not only is Brittany my own go-to person when it comes to self care, she's always coming up with new and manageable ways for women to fit a little self-care love into everyday life, and her 12 Pillars say it all. Brittany makes self care inclusive and available to anyone, with any budget and any amount of time (or lack thereof) on their hands, and honestly? This list makes self-care seem much less abstract and out of reach. The way she has categorized self-care is a remarkable example of what happens with a little attention is paid to the small details in our lives that we might be overlooking, and how we can make self-care an everyday occurrence for maximum benefit, rather than a special indulgence when we're lucky. According to Brittany, here are the 12 Pillars of a balanced self-care routine: SOUL Practicing Presence Practicing Gratitude + Kindness Practicing Discomfort MIND Maintenance Learning Creation BODY Sleep + Rest Nourishment + Hydrat ion Movement CONNECTION Yourself Others Mother Nature Brittany also shares with us some of her personal story and how self care become so crucial in her own life, including a serious bout of depression. For the full story, check out this podcast interview on my former podcast Fit & Nourished Mind with my co-host Kate. We interviewed Brittany in episode #21 and it remained our most downloaded interview ever! This girl is a nomadic strength coach and yoga teacher originally from Chicago, IL now living in the Netherlands, and she created Wild Woman Strong to encourage women on how to build effective self-care routines so they can feel strong and empowered to tackle any adventure they choose. I'm going to be part of Brittany's brand newSelf-Care Mentorship program found in the show notes, and will be sharing my full experience afterwards. First we talk about how to not fall for the vegan hype... don't believe people when you hear "you'll NEVER get a cold" as a vegan or "you will lose a ton of weight!" while some things may be true for some people, we don't want folks to get discouraged if they don't see x,y,z outcome. Veganism is much more than a diet or fad, and it's important to remember the main reasons to go vegan. In the second half, we chat with Essentially Brittany, a lifestyle blogger over at http://www.thejaroudis.com.
