Anita Krajnc, a co-founder of the Animal Save Movement, talks with pattrice jones about her activist history, the https://plantbasedtreaty.org/ (Plant Based Treaty), and lessons animal advocates can take from ACT UP, radical environmentalists, and the value of bearing witness to animal suffering. Please note, there were some issues with the recording, so the audio is at times a touch choppy.
How do you turn your actions as an individual into a global movement? How can we change the world by bearing witness? In this episode of Activist, we talk with the brilliant Anita Krajnc about how she created the Animal Save Movement and how by opening our eyes to the suffering around us, we can help to end it. In 2010 Anita made a promise to a pig on a truck, that she would no longer turn away. From three vigils a week, a movement was founded that would become global. Our chat with Anita was both moving and inspiring. If you want to make a bigger impact for the animals, Anita shares some wonderful advice and paves the way to a brighter future for the animals, the planet and the people. "We want to change the cultural norm so that people don't say anymore that "Oh I don't want to see slaughterhouse footage, it's depressing, it's terrible, I don't want to see that." That's not an answer. Even if it hurts you, even if it causes you trauma we need to share the incredible trauma that animals are suffering in order to change their plight. They suffer trauma from the day they're born until the day they die. All their life they're suffering trauma. They bear witness all their life. We're just breaking witness a tiny bit and it's so devastating because it's so awful what's happening, but we need to do this. if all of us do this, if a community does it instead of one person, then there's more power in it and the situation will change faster. So that's the reason you don't have one person bearing witness, you really need to encourage the entire community to bear witness, because that's what's going to change the world faster." - Anita Krajnc
Before prepping for todays interview I saw the Animal Save Movement as a global network of passionate animal rights activists committed to baring witness outside slaughterhouses with both the knowledge that transparency and truth is the biggest threat to animal agriculture. And also the hope that if slaughterhouse houses had glass walls (or at least an animal vigil at every slaughterhouse) then the world would be vegan. These statements are of course true, ... Regan Russell was a beloved, relentless and skilled activist who – for more than forty years – devoted her life to advocating for voiceless animals. But, in an instant, she was silenced, run over and killed, on Friday, June 19th, by a truck packed with pigs as it headed to a slaughterhouse in Burlington, Ontario in Canada. Protests and blockades have now erupted at the spot where Regan was run down, as a scrum of media assembled to hear from the victim's family and fellow animal rights advocates. Save Movement founder Anita Krajnc spoke, promising global mobilization in honor of Regan Russell's life, cut short as she was advocating for compassion to other sentient beings with whom we share this planet.

Did you know that a single slaughterhouse in Canada kills about 10,000 pigs a day? In this episode, Kathy Stevens and Anita Krajnc discuss: The catalyst for why she changed from vegetarianism to veganism and decided to establish Toronto Pig Save. How Anita built a worldwide movement in part by studying the strategies of Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King. What Kathy learned from her participation in pig and cow vigils. Why vegans must begin to talk about climate chaos. The Greta Effect and how vegans can make a direct change. Key Takeaways: If you stage frequent, direct actions, you can build a movement that way. We need to be eco-vegans, not just vegans. Going vegan is an essential part of the climate control solution. Activism is often marked by speaking up for the voiceless, and that starts by bearing witness to suffering. Together Amy and Billy started the Cleveland chapter of the Save Movement, the Cleveland Farmed Animal Save. They are two of the kind souls who dedicate their time to expose what the animal agriculture industry doesn't want you to see, working to connect the disconnect between animals in farms and photos and animals on our plates. Recently Amy & Billy came back from bearing witness at Anita Krajnc, of Toronto Pig Save's, final court date. This duo does all of this with love and positivity, citing a strict 'non violent' stance in their work. In this episode Amy & Billy share their experience with Anita's 'pig trial', how they work to chisel away at the idea that animals are property, and their response to Gary Francione's opinion that save movements aren't helpful to veganism. Plus they give some helpful advice on why a non violent approach can deescalate any situation.
