As part of BYU-Idaho's Summer Session Devotional Recommendations, we're featuring “Love Thy God and Thy Neighbor" by Sister Reyna I. Aburto, which was delivered on June 4, 2019. Sister Aburto was sustained in April 2017 as the second counselor in the general presidency of the Relief Society, the Church's organization for its six million female members ages 18 and older. Reyna I. Aburto was born in Nicaragua to Noel Blanco and Delbi Cardoza and married Carlos Aburto of Mexico in the Jordan River Utah Temple in 1993. They are both converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and they have three children.Reyna I. Aburto says her husband, Carlos, is her “best friend” and her “biggest support,” and they enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren. She says two major incidents from her childhood greatly impacted her life: surviving an earthquake that destroyed her home and killed her older brother, and living through a period of civil unrest in Nicaragua in the late 1970s. Through these difficult experiences of loss, uncertainty and fear, she learned relationships, family, love and faith are our most precious possessions. Reyna I. Aburto attended Universidad Centroamericana, where she studied industrial engineering for four years, and holds an AAS degree in computer science from Utah Valley University. In 1989, after going through a difficult time in her life, she was invited by Latter-day Saint missionaries to attend church in California. She was hesitant at first, but recalls feeling safe and at home the moment she stepped into the meetinghouse. A few weeks later, at age 26, she was baptized. She says she has “never stopped marveling at the beauty of the gospel,” calling her membership in the Church a huge privilege and gift. Her family attended Spanish-speaking congregations until 2013, when they began attending their neighborhood English-speaking ward, and she has served extensively in the Relief Society, Young Women, Primary, Sunday School and Scouting organizations in her ward and stake (diocese). She served on the Primary general board from 2012 to 2016, where her responsibilities included coordinating resources for children in the Church with disabilities, involvement in the Scouting program, improving Primary web content and providing trainings to Church leaders in the United States and Mexico. She has worked in the language industry for more than 25 years, balancing work, family and Church responsibilities, and now owns a small translation business with her husband.

Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of She's A Small Wonder: A Small Wonder Podcast. Well, after 6 years of covering all the episodes of the show Small Wonder, we've finally reached the end of the Series with the four final episodes of Season 4. Today, I covered S4E21: The Tattletale, which aired on April 29, 1989. In this episode a gossip reporter reveals Vicki's secret. I was a little surprised by this episode, because I just assumed the reporter was a woman, when it turns out to be someone who went to college with Ted and Joan. This was creative and had Harriet, Jamie and Reggie dressed like Vicki towards the end of the episode and doing a song and dance routine. S4E22: The Strike, which aired on May 6, 1989. In this episode Ted's union strike inspires the whole family. This episode also has a side plot of the kids in Jamie's class going on strike after their demands are not met, one of these demands is allowing the kids to bring their pets to school in a daycare situation. Interesting, Joan meets them halfway and tells them they can have a pet day show and tell once a month. The vending machine part of their demands is a kid wish list of things they wish they could have in school. Ted's demands from his co workers to the Union board aren't wrong, increase percentage in profit sharing and more coverage for dental as well as a pay increase. Normal things any employee would want. S4E23: See No Evil, which aired on May 13, 1989. In this episode Vicki's eyesight is failing, so she cannot identify bike thieves. This was a goofy episode, Vicki wearing eyeglasses, granted it's understandable, things wear out and often need to be replaced. Ted gets Jamie a new bike, which then proceeds to get stolen in the schoolyard and Vicki has to help identify the thieves based on their voices. This episode was just ok. and finally the last episode of Season 4 and the final episode of the show. S4E24: Thy Neighbor's Wife, which aired on May 20, 1989. In this episode Joan poses as Mrs. Brindle to impress a businessman. I hated this episode because it centered around Brandon and him trying to impress a Japanese businessman because he wants to hire a "family man" and after a fight with Bonnie who takes Harriet and moves into a hotel, Brandon is in a bind and begs Joan to pretend to be Bonnie, he even has Joan and Vicki dress in what now a days would be considered racially insensitive kimonos and delivering lines that would not pass for appropriate by todays TV standards. Ted was written out for most of the episode for a flight to Texas, but then comes back in the last 5 minutes. Richard Christie (Ted Lawson) actually directed this final episode. He did a good job. Well, there you have it, I hope you all enjoy these last episodes of the show and thank you so much for listening to this podcast on Small Wonder for the last 6 years. Have a great Summer everyone!

This was a very fun and interactive interview! I absolutely loved talking to Brett about his role in the movie reprisal of “The Crazies” (2010). Even though it's a remake of George Romero's, I would honestly have to say the remake did it some justice. Brett is what we call a “Chameleon” actor; you put him in any role, he will deliver it! This can be backed up with his role as ‘Marcus' in “Fear the Walking Dead” and to make it more believable, his drive and determination is what makes him a very gifted actor. We talked about his notorious scenes in the movie: the scene where he burns down the house and the scene in the jail cell. I love how he provided his own insight about his character and what he did in order to prepare for – not just the scenes but for his character. Truly, he's an inspiration for any budding actor who wished to use the same drive and determination to get where you want to go. Overall, Brett is an awesome guy. I had a lot of fun speaking to him and this is one of the best interviews this year.

Catholic Church CatechismArticle 9 The Ninth CommandmentTHE NINTH COMMANDMENTYou shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's.298 Every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.2992514 St. John distinguishes three kinds of covetousness or concupiscence: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life.300 In the Catholic catechetical tradition, the ninth commandment forbids carnal concupiscence; the tenth forbids coveting another's goods.2515 Etymologically, "concupiscence" can refer to any intense form of human desire. Christian theology has given it a particular meaning: the movement of the sensitive appetite contrary to the operation of the human reason. the apostle St. Paul identifies it with the rebellion of the "flesh" against the "spirit."301 Concupiscence stems from the disobedience of the first sin. It unsettles man's moral faculties and, without being in itself an offense, inclines man to commit sins.3022516 Because man is a composite being, spirit and body, there already exists a certain tension in him; a certain struggle of tendencies between "spirit" and "flesh" develops. But in fact this struggle belongs to the heritage of sin. It is a consequence of sin and at the same time a confirmation of it. It is part of the daily experience of the spiritual battle:For the Apostle it is not a matter of despising and condemning the body which with the spiritual soul constitutes man's nature and personal subjectivity. Rather, he is concerned with the morally good or bad works, or better, the permanent dispositions - virtues and vices - which are the fruit of submission (in the first case) or of resistance (in the second case) to the saving action of the Holy Spirit. For this reason the Apostle writes: "If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit."303The ninth commandment in the Catholic Bible is "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's". The scripture for this commandment is Exodus 20:17 and Deuteronomy 5:21.   Here are some related Bible passages and Catholic teachings about the ninth commandment:  The sixth commandment The sixth commandment is "Thou shalt not commit adultery". The ninth commandment is related to the sixth commandment because both address the proper propagation of life.  Lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life St. John distinguishes three kinds of covetousness: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life. The tension between the “flesh” and the “spirit” The ninth commandment addresses the tension between the “flesh” and the “spirit”.  Purity of heart and temperance Purity of heart and temperance are crucial to overcoming lust of the flesh.  The good of community Coveting is related to the good of community. The Hebrew word for coveting The Hebrew word for coveting suggests not simply desire but desire that leads to action.

It forbids coveting the goods of another, as the root of theft, robbery, and fraud, which the seventh commandment forbids. "Lust of the eyes" leads to the violence and injustice forbidden by the fifth commandment.318 Avarice, like fornication, originates in the idolatry prohibited by the first three prescriptions of the Law.319 concerns the intentions of the heart; with the ninth, it sumarizes all the precepts of the Law. The Tenth Commandment, “You shall not covet your neighbor's goods” (Ex 20:17; Dt 5:21), teaches that we have a responsibility to respect the rights of others and forbids us from unjustly desiring, taking, keeping or damaging the property of others.Source catholic bible scriptures thou shall not covet they neighbors goods

In order to love our neighbors well, the Bible invites us to grow our discernment, or ability to perceive, understand or judge things clearly. That's because Proverbs identifies three types of people: the wise, the fool and the evil. Wisdom understands that loving each can look different. Today we focus on the wise. These are the easiest of our neighbors to love, but it also begs the question: are you a wise neighbor? In looking at some of the wisdom from proverbs, we are better able to identify if we are wise and the importance of seeking God's wisdom.Questions for Reflection:* What are unwise things you are struggle with currently?* Who are people in your life that are wise in the things of God? * Do you tend to surround yourself with wise, foolish or evil people?* How do you handle constructive criticism?* Other questions are included in the attached handout

It was published in 1980 and is an exploration of the sexual revolution and the changing attitudes towards sex in America during the 1960s and 1970s. The book looks into various aspects of sexuality, including open marriages, swingers clubs, pornography, and the adult film industry. Talese conducted extensive research and interviews to provide an in-depth and journalistic account of the subject matter. Thy Neighbor's Wife became a bestseller and generated controversy for its explicit content and its exploration of moral and social boundaries.Chapter 2 Is Thy Neighbor's Wife Book A Good Book"Thy Neighbor's Wife" is a non-fiction book published in 1981 by American author and journalist Gay Talese. It explores the changing sexual mores and practices in America during the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. Talese conducted extensive research and interviews with various individuals involved in the counterculture movement, including swingers, nudists, and participants in the adult entertainment industry. Some readers appreciate the book for its in-depth exploration of the societal changes and sexual revolution of that time. Others find it controversial due to its explicit nature and candid descriptions of sexual activities. If you are interested in learning about the sexual revolution and the associated cultural and social changes from the perspective of various individuals living during that era, you may find "Thy Neighbor's Wife" an informative and thought-provoking read. However, it is important to note that personal preferences can vary, and it is best to read reviews or summaries to determine if the book aligns with your interests and reading preferences.Chapter 3 Thy Neighbor's Wife Book by Gay Talese Summary"Thy Neighbor's Wife" is a non-fiction book written by Gay Talese and published in 1980. The book explores the sexual revolution in America during the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on various aspects of sexuality and the changing social attitudes toward it.Talese delves into the lives of a wide range of individuals and groups involved in the sexual revolution, including swingers, nudists, pornography producers, and feminists. He interviews key figures and immerses himself in their stories, providing a detailed and intimate look at how these individuals and communities navigate their desires and relationships. One of the key themes in the book is the discrepancy between societal expectations and individual desires. Talese argues that while traditional marital norms and fidelity were the norm, many people harbored secret desires and participated in sexual activities outside their marriages. He explores how these desires led to the rise of alternative sexual communities and practices. The book also critiques the hypocrisy of American society, where sex was both celebrated and condemned. Talese argues that the sexual revolution challenged traditional ideas about love and relationships, leading to more open discussions around sexuality and the exploration of new sexual experiences.Throughout "Thy Neighbor's Wife," Talese raises questions about the nature of intimacy, the role of monogamy in relationships, and the boundaries of sexual freedom. He challenges readers to consider the complexity of human desires and the ways in which societal norms can restrict or liberate individuals.Overall, "Thy Neighbor's Wife" is a thought-provoking exploration of the sexual revolution in America, providing an in-depth look at the people who shaped and participated in this transformative era. Gay Talese is known for his dapper wardrobe and distinctive writing style. He became famous as a writer who helped to define the New Journalism in the 1960s. He wrote block buster best sellers like Honor Thy Father about the Bonanno crime family. The Voyeur's Motel focuses on a motel owner who spied on his guests. Talese also calls himself a voyeur. He spent 8 years researching Thy Neighbor's Wife, his book about sex in America. That research included managing a massage parlor and living in a nudist colony. Now, 91-year old Gay Talese has written a new book called Bartleby and Me.  Sitting on his elegant leather sofa in his Manhattan townhouse, I asked Gay Talese to tell me about all the outrageous things he's done in his life. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Patrick McAndrew. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.
