What does it truly mean to love your neighbor as yourself? In this sermon based on Luke 10:1-37, Pastor Chris Rieber examines Jesus' powerful parable of the Good Samaritan. Discover the urgency behind the second Great Commandment and why, as Christians, we cannot pick and choose who receives our love and compassion. Pastor Rieber emphasizes that loving everyone as an image-bearer of God, regardless of differences or prejudice, is the mark of a true believer. Learn how Jesus' final instruction in the passage – "Go and do the same" – calls us to a love that is active, sacrificial, and extends even when inconvenient.
The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) illustrates true love and mercy, challenging us to care for others beyond social or cultural barriers. Dave Henke highlights that loving our neighbor requires action, not just sentiment, and emphasizes that salvation isn't earned through works but received through faith in Christ. The Samaritan's compassion contrasts with the priest and Levite's neglect, revealing that true righteousness comes from a heart transformed by God's grace. Jesus' message is clear: show mercy and live out God's love in practical ways. ★ Support this podcast ★

6.9.19This is a very familiar parable. In fact, most people, Christian or not, churchgoer or not, know about this story. This is the story of the Good Samaritan. But, what you are going to see became clear is that there is an obvious meaning to the story that most everyone gets and there is also another meaning that almost no one gets. The one everyone gets is: Do Good. Love People. The one that Jesus was trying to get across to the expert in religious law: You cannot live good enough to be good enough. Rebroadcast of the long-running radio program, "The Ave Maria Hour," a presentation of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. www.AtonementFriars.org In this week’s episode, a medical doctor forgoes a prestigious career to practice in a poor neighborhood and to treat a population who would not normally have access to good medical care. The doctor personifies the Good Samaritan from the parable in Luke 10:25-37 – a man who showed mercy to another in need instead of ignoring his plight.
John explores the Good Samaritan story – saying that it asks who our neighbour is; and both who am I willing to be a neighbour to and who am I willing to let be a neighbour to me?
When I served as a hospital chaplain I would sit in on continuity of care meetings. These were daily meetings in the nurse’s station of each area in the hospital. The meetings brought together hospital administrators, social workers, spiritual care workers, and doctors or nurses. The nurse or doctor would discuss each patient under their care with the rest of the team so that all the patient’s needs could be addressed. In those meetings I learned the significance of the term, “Presenting Problem.” The Presenting Problem was the thing that caused a person to seek medical attention. Presenting Problems are often fairly common health issues; a fever, a persistent cough, headache, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, and so on. While those Presenting Problems are typically insignificant to a person’s overall health; in these patients those small things where clues to much more significant health issues. Sometimes a persistent cough is a result of a cold, or allergies; but then sometimes it is a result of pneumonia or lung cancer. As the people of God, we see people’s pain; it may be emotional, relational, financial, existential, or something else. As people empowered by the Holy Spirit, we becoming increasingly aware of the pain experienced by others. We have a tendency to see that pain and work to bring relief. We give money, offer encouragement, say a prayer, or try to help. But, if the person’s pain in a Presenting Problem of something that is very significant, the result is like us offering a cough drop to person with lung cancer. We need to be able to “Shift” our ability to see pain. The people of God are called to go beyond the Presenting Problems and go deeper into peoples lives and circumstances, so that health and healing may be brought to the whole person, and transformation brought the root causes of those Presenting Problems.
