Why does reading the Bible feel so difficult? John Mark invites us to rediscover Scripture as a place of encounter with Jesus, not just a source of information. Read OnlineJesus said to his disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.” John 15:18–19This is a sobering thought: “the world hates you.” That is, if you are among those who have been taken by our Lord out of the world. In that case, Jesus says that the world will hate you.No one wants to be hated. No one wants to experience the wrath, persecution, attacks, or ridicule of another. Hatred is ugly, painful and difficult to endure. But that is part of the nature of hate. It's not only a form of persecution, it's also a form of manipulation. Hate is an attack upon another by which the hater seeks to inflict injury and to manipulate them to change and conform to their will. The secular and unchristian “world” wants to win you over and away from God. Jesus offers this teaching, in part, to prepare us so that when we do experience hatred from the world, we will not be affected by it nor manipulated to turn from Him. Therefore, this teaching is a revelation of much mercy from our Lord.Remember that Jesus spoke of three enemies of our soul. The flesh, the devil and the world. In this Gospel passage, to “belong to the world” means that a person allows themself to be negatively influenced by the countless lies embedded within the world. The secular media, pop-culture, biased opinions, social pressures, false images of happiness and the like seek to constantly misguide us and draw us in. We are regularly tempted to believe that fulfillment is found in money, our physical appearance, the recognition of our accomplishments and much more. The world tells us that our opinions must conform to the secular values of the age—and if they don't, then we are judgmental, close-minded extremists and should be shunned and “canceled” or silenced. These worldly temptations and pressures are real, and, for that reason, Jesus' words are freeing. They free us from the manipulations and deceptions we will experience when we live our faith openly for all to see. When we do so, we will be hated by the world. But knowing that provides peace of heart when it happens. Reflect, today, upon these powerful and consoling words of Jesus. If you do not experience any form of hatred from the world, then this should be a concern and the cause for reflection. And if you do experience some form of hatred, know that our Lord prepared you for this and offers you His strength and courage to endure it with joy. In the end, all that matters is what our Lord thinks—and nothing else. In the end, if you experience hatred by the world in any form, know that this makes you more like Christ Himself. My persecuted Lord, You endured the hatred and ridicule of many who were engulfed by the false values of the world. I pray that I may share not only in Your life of love and mercy but also in Your strength during the times that I also endure the world's hatred. I commit myself to You and pray that You continually take me out of the world and bring me close to Yourself. "And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:19This verse is a powerful reminder that God is our ultimate provider, no matter the economic uncertainties we face. Recently, we have seen that many have been concerned about trade tariffs and their potential impact on the economy. Today, Bob Doll joins us to explain what this means and what we can expect moving forward.Bob Doll is the CEO and CIO of Crossmark Global Investments. He regularly contributes to Faith and Finance and other media outlets like Bloomberg TV, Fox Business, and CNBC. What Are Tariffs and How Do They Affect Us?Tariffs are essentially taxes. If a 10% tariff is placed on imported goods, the price of those goods increases. That means consumers pay more for the products they need, which can slow down economic activity. However, tariffs are not just about taxation; they are often used as a bargaining tool in international trade negotiations. Sometimes, it depends on the day of the week because tariffs are on one day and then off the next. This back-and-forth can create uncertainty in the market and impact businesses, investors, and consumers alike. Why Do Markets React Negatively to Tariffs? The stock market tends to respond negatively whenever there's talk of tariffs. Why?Tariffs can slow economic growth. If companies and consumers have to pay more for goods, they either buy fewer products or cut back on spending in other areas. This dampens growth, and the market doesn't like it.Could tariffs alone push the economy into a recession? If they are significant enough, last too long, and trigger retaliation from other countries, it could certainly lead to what economists call a trade war. A trade war is not healthy for economic growth, but cooler minds will likely prevent it from escalating too far.The Strategy Behind Tariffs: Negotiation or Necessity? So, is the push for tariffs simply a negotiation tactic, or is there a deeper economic issue at play? There's no question that the U.S. has a trade imbalance with many countries. Addressing this imbalance is part of the reasoning behind tariffs. However, political leaders understand the risks and use tariffs more as a bargaining tool than a long-term strategy. They don't want to sink the economy because these leaders have a vested interest in economic stability.Finding Peace in Economic UncertaintyDiscussions about tariffs, markets, and recessions can easily lead to fear. Economic uncertainty often leaves people feeling anxious about their financial future. But as believers, we have a greater source of security. Here are three key reminders:Leaders Care About Economic Stability—Regardless of their approach, political leaders generally want a strong economy. The Economy is Resilient—Whether we have tariffs or not, the economy is doing well, and its economic fundamentals are still strong. God is in Control—Most importantly, our hope is not in governments, markets, or policies but in God. God knows the end from the beginning, including tariffs. Psalm 91 reminds us that God is our refuge and fortress—we can rest securely in His protection.Focus on What You Can Control: Faithful StewardshipWhile we can't control global trade policies, tax laws, or the stock market, we can control how we manage our own finances. We can control our own little economies—what passes through our hands. That means practicing faithful stewardship. We need to take care of everything God has given us—not just money, but all aspects of life: our minds, our bodies, our time. Being wise stewards of our finances means making thoughtful financial decisions, saving wisely, and giving generously. After all, it's not ours; it's all God's.When we recognize that everything we have belongs to God, it transforms the way we handle money. Rather than holding onto it tightly, we can give joyfully and generously.Economic uncertainty will always exist, whether through tariffs, inflation, or market fluctuations. But believers are called to a higher perspective. Instead of being driven by fear, we can rest in the truth that God is sovereign over all things—even global trade policies. The key is to focus on what we can control: managing our finances wisely, practicing faithful stewardship, and embracing the joy of generosity. And through it all, we can trust that God is our refuge and provider, no matter what challenges come our way.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I recently received a sizable inheritance. One thing stands out, vision is deeply personal. It's shaped by our experiences, values and our willingness to embrace vulnerability. Vision isn't just about what we see, but why we see it. In this episode, I'll share insights from 11 remarkable guests who have illuminated what it means to craft, nurture and live your vision. Their stories showcase authenticity, courage, the joy of discovering brilliance and exploring unexpected places. Tim Sweet 00:35I'd like to ask you some questions. Do you consider yourself the kind of person that gets things done? Are you able to take a vision and transform that into action? Are you able to align others towards that vision and get them moving to create something truly remarkable? If any of these describe you, then you, my friend, are a leader, and this show is all about and all for you. I'm Tim Sweet. Welcome to Episode 46 of the Sweet on Leadership Podcast. Today we're diving deep into the concept of vision. It's more than just setting goals or dreaming big. It's about clarity and knowing where you're headed, and the courage to take steps to get there. And authenticity ensuring that your vision aligns with who you truly are.  Tim Sweet 01:20So let's begin. Vision begins with purpose. It's not about ambition for its own sake. It's about what truly matters to you. When I spoke with Teresa Waddington, an engineer and Vice President of Corporate Relations, in Episode 28, her story struck me. Teresa's vision bridges generations. It's shaped by her father's legacy and her aspirations for her daughter and the world she lives in. She beautifully illustrated how vision connects the past and the future. It's why I sought her out; because it's just such a compelling picture. Here she is. Teresa Waddington 01:54I'm on a mission to turn my dad's oil patch into my daughter's energy garden, and when I think about that future energy garden. I really do think it is a whole host of things. It's a whole host of technologies, and couplings of those technologies between kind of old and new that'll really drive us forward. Tim Sweet 02:12The idea of legacy can deepen and strengthen our vision. Teresa reminds us that its purpose that gives our vision its resilience. In episode 26, I spoke with Ryan and Shane Pegg. Ryan, a grade eight student and an inspiring entrepreneur, a triathlete and a wearable technology ambassador, had a keen eye for innovation and a desire to make an impact. His dad, Shane leads business incubators in their community, where he fosters creativity and collaboration. Their conversation covered the origins and purpose of how visions evolve and create value beyond ourselves. Here's Ryan. Ryan Pegg 02:51I feel like business is not only about the money side of things, like you're not only trying to make money, you're trying to build new things, you're trying to help people. And that really changed the way that I thought about it. Tim Sweet 03:08Ryan's clarity and focus stem from values that he's seen modeled and experience that he's been allowed to have. Shane shared how cultivating an others-first mentality has shaped not only his approach to business, but also his family's outlook on life. Shane Pegg 03:25It's encouraging, you know, you try to model a kind of an attitude of generosity and compassion thinking of others and others-first mentality. So that's kind of big part of life here. It's what about others kind of take your focus off of yourself, and so the kids are all great at doing that, and yeah, it's encouraging, and that's certainly a life lesson that we find later in life that's amazing at how money can follow when you're not focused on it, but you're focused on doing good or doing something that you really enjoy doing, and you do it really well, and the money will follow if it's meant to be. Tim Sweet 03:57As I reflect on this delightful conversation with the Peggs, it became clear that a really powerful vision transcends personal achievement. It is truly about creating something larger than ourselves, something meaningful and something that will leave that lasting impact. Having a vision is one thing, sharing it with others is another, and this is where clarity and confidence come into play. In episode 13, I was joined by Melanie Potro, an image consultant specializing in personal branding, she highlighted how our vision for the future is intertwined with the vision we have for ourselves in the future. This influences how we present ourselves and therefore can shape how we're perceived by others and how we can forward ourselves in life. First impressions often pave the way for new opportunities that will allow us to fulfill the vision we've got in front of us. Melanie Potro 04:51If you want to inspire other people and want to make sure that they feel that you're trustworthy, competent and so on, and you feel that we don't carry that across at the moment, then you need to look at your appearance, because that's the first thing they see. So that can really be the entrance ticket, the ticket to open the doors for the next step in your career, or to get a big client on board, or to make a big sale. Tim Sweet 05:17Melanie's insights inspired me. I hadn't considered that we can make ourselves a visual representation of where we plan to go. Our presentation reflects our confidence and our values and reinforces our undermining mission and where we're going in life. Likewise, Elayna Snyder, a creativity coach from Episode 25, took this idea further. She challenges her clients and our listeners to align their work with their unique identity and to use that alignment to push boundaries beyond what most people would think is possible. Elayna Snyder 05:54What we're really looking at is this main question around, how do I powerfully articulate what I do to create more of my best clients at the fees that I desire? And there's another question that comes on the back of that, too. And that question is, how do I integrate more of myself into my work? What's that next big idea? Maybe it's a new offering, a book, or even the creation of a movement. Tim Sweet 06:19This is an important reminder that a vision isn't static. It evolves as we grow. It gives us a new launch point to push even further. In fact, a vision usually is something we simply haven't achieved yet. The question isn't just what's my vision, but how is this a much more intense version of who I am? Obviously, vision isn't just about the immediate future, it's about the bigger picture. In episode 20, Debbie Potts, an educational economist, HR and productivity expert, shared a harrowing tale of her personal battle with illness through her struggle, my friend Debbie found an anchor, a vivid, unwavering vision of a red house in the forest that gave her strength and focus to survive and become an advocate for others. Here's Debbie. Tim Sweet 07:08What did the Red House represent to you? Debbie Potts 07:10Oh my gosh. It represented freedom. It represented achievements. It represented living life on my terms, and obviously I love nature, as you do, and it just represented, you know, being able to be close to nature. And, you know, completely do a 180 turn around of my life. You know, I lived in a big city, London, full of people, full of traffic, full of everything. And I've now completely reversed that. Tim Sweet 07:43Debbie's story revolved around this idea of a true north giving us direction and focus in life during our most challenging moments. It's a compass that helps us define a path to those spaces in the world where we can truly thrive. Obviously, our vision is about how we care for ourselves now so that we can experience what's next. In episode 29 Erin Ashbacher, a leadership fitness coach and member of my team, spoke about the intersection between physical health and vision. She highlighted how neglecting our well being can become a barrier to fulfilling those goals in the future. In fact, it can completely derail where we think we're gonna be. Erin Ashbacher 08:22There's definitely been a lot of people who think that being busy is really the gold standard and making sure that we do it all, and it's hard when you're working in cardiac rehab, and you see people that have all of a sudden just been stopped in their tracks. And it made me really realize that preventative medicine, preventative wellness, is where we want to be. Some of my clients that have reached retirement, and they've had a really successful career, and now that they're retired, they're like, oh, now I'm going to take care of my health, but maybe they have an ailment that has been kind of creeping around on them, and so they just feel like they're starting at a really deep bottom, like, oh man, if I would have just started going to the gym or being a little bit more active in my 40s or my 50s, now that I'm in my 60s, I wouldn't have to deal with this big mountain, right? And it can be a bit discouraging to people when they kind of thought that their retirement was going to be one way, and their health and physical limitations are creating some a different story for them, right? So, yeah, let's take care of it today.  Tim Sweet 09:27Those insights are both sobering and inspiring, challenging us to think if we are caving to short term comfort rather than investing in our future selves to achieve a vision, we need to be physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to enjoy the journey. This podcast is about leadership, and therefore it's about high achievers. But vision isn't about perfection. It's about showing up even when things are uncertain. In episode 24, Erin Lydon, founder of Poker Power, drew a fascinating parallel between poker and leadership. She explained how leaning in to take calculated risks, even when you don't have perfect information, even when you are out of position and maybe even at a disadvantage, is a skill that's applicable both at the poker table and in life. Erin Lydon 10:13So often at a poker table, nobody has a made hand, you know, and so it really is going to come down to the person who's going to play their chips most aggressively and get the other players to fold, that person's going to win the hand. That is something you have to practice, shoving your chips all in when you have imperfect information, you don't know the cards still to come, and you certainly don't know what the other players have. That's a learned skill, because it's scary. Tim Sweet 10:40like poker, a vision requires courage, not the absence of fear, but the willingness to act regardless of what hand you're dealt. Reflecting on these stories, I'm struck by how authenticity and trust in ourselves are intertwined with vision. In my conversation with Hanne Ballhausen, a director and diabetes advocate, I was deeply moved by her openness about putting a difficult history in its place. Hannah's honesty about her journey through a dark emotional forest showed immense courage. We can't show the whole episode here, but I would encourage you to listen to it for now. Just take this little snippet. Hanne Ballhausen 11:20Trust your gut feeling. It's there for a reason. Tap into your superpower that are your feelings, and just join me in to give into all of your muchness of who you are. You're beautiful. Tim Sweet 11:36Right before Hannah's episode, I met with Greta Ehlers, a med tech professional and diabetes technology advocate who shared how belief in your vision can inspire others. In episode 22 she highlighted how passion and conviction drive leadership forward, and there was a great moment when she realized the leadership torque that that had given her. Again, I encourage you to listen to this whole episode, but for right now, here's just a few words. Greta Ehlers 12:04Leadership can be finding something you really believe in and driving it forward. And if it is something you believe in and you drive it forward, then others will follow. Tim Sweet 12:14Hanne and Greta demonstrate how authenticity makes the vision and the person magnetic. People are drawn to sincerity and passion. It inspires them to take risks and pursue their own adventures. And on that note, in Episode 42 Renee Miller, an engineer and avid hiker who knows a little something about carving her own path, described how stepping away from societal expectations can lead you to unexpected growth. Here's Renee. Renee Miller 12:45You get so caught up into your daily lives and the tasks that you know, you go to work and have to get all these tasks done and come home and have responsibilities at home, but yeah, you kind of forget about yourself. And you know, what about that professional engineering license that would be really good for my career? Oh, I don't have time for that because I'm busy working and, yeah, just talking with people and reminding them to prioritize theirselves and their resumes, and it'll probably be good for their company as well. Tim Sweet 13:21Rene's story, which was shared with her partner, Tim, showed how this vision of adventure often emerges when we step outside our comfort zones, when we refuse to be defined, when we take risks, when we trust that life will provide and when we embrace what's over that next hill. Well, that's it. And I hope in this episode, with all the different facets we've explored around the concept of a vision, you've found some inspiration that you can use to meditate on your own. It's not about predicting the future, it's about creating it. Because life is a creative process, and our level of creativity is parallel with our willingness to dream boldly, express ourselves authentically and take courageous action. So here's my challenge to you, define a vision that resonates with your deepest values, share it boldly, let your uniqueness shine through in every detail and when needed, challenge that status quo and step courageously into the unknown. Take that first step today, write down a few words craft that future that only you can imagine. Remember, the world needs leaders. The world needs you. The world needs your vision, your passion and your unique perspective. Tim Sweet 14:40Thank you so much for listening to Sweet on Leadership. Read OnlineJesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” Luke 17:17–19This reply from our Lord came in response to the one leper who returned to Jesus to thank Him. Ten lepers had come to Jesus, stood at a distance, cried out, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” And with that, Jesus healed them all. But the heart of this healing is not as much the healing itself as it is the gratitude expressed by only one of the ten. This Gospel relates to us that this one leper did five things to profoundly express his gratitude. He returned, glorified God, did so in a loud voice, fell at the feet of Jesus, and thanked him. What a wonderful witness for us all!By analogy, children often take the loving care of their parents for granted. That's why many good parents regularly remind their children to say “thank you.” In our relationship with God, we can also easily take God's saving actions for granted. We can easily see all the grace we receive as something we deserve rather than as an infinitely merciful gift. When that happens, we become more like the other nine who failed to properly express their gratitude to Jesus.First of all, it must be noted that expressing gratitude to God is not done because God needs these accolades. He does not depend upon our gratitude to affirm His self-worth. This is obvious. God is God, and He does not need our praise in any way. However, giving profound praise and glory to God is essential. It is essential because we need this virtue of gratitude so as to daily be reminded that all we receive from God is an unmerited gift. We cannot earn His love and grace. We do not deserve it. But He chooses to bestow it anyway out of mercy. And the only appropriate response to mercy is gratitude. Profound gratitude.Gratitude is essential because it is the truth. We should always return to our Lord after He has graced us. We should glorify Him with much fervor, crying out to Him with passion. We should, literally and interiorly, fall on our face before Him, at His feet, and thank Him, over and over and over again. Doing so will always help us to remember the truth that everything we have and everything we are is a gift from God. An unmerited and undeserved gift of grace.Reflect, today, upon the depth of gratitude in your own heart. Do you often act more like a spoiled and selfish child, or do you regularly perceive the graciousness of God? If you lack in any way this fullness of gratitude, then ponder this one leper. His gratitude, expressed with the fullness of passion, is the most important part of this story. In the end, he was graced far more than the other nine because his healing produced faith; and it was that faith that saved not only his body but his soul. Seek to save your soul by imitating the faith of this one holy and healed leper. My gracious Lord, You bestow Your mercy upon me in superabundance. Without You, Jesus, I have nothing; but with You, I receive everything. May I always know and understand my need for Your grace. And as I am gifted with it, may I respond with the deepest gratitude, thus, saving my soul through faith. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter - The Hatred of the World

Jesus said to his disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.” John 15:18–19This is a sobering thought: “the world hates you.” That is, if you are among those who have been taken by our Lord out of the world. In that case, Jesus says that the world will hate you. No one wants to be hated. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Third Sunday of Advent The Collect: Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament: Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 1The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; 2to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. 4They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. 8For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. 9Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed. 10I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. Psalm: Psalm 126 or Canticle 3 or Canticle 15 1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, *        then were we like those who dream. 2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, *        and our tongue with shouts of joy. 3 Then they said among the nations, *       “The Lord has done great things for them.” 4 The Lord has done great things for us, *        and we are glad indeed. 5 Restore our fortunes, O Lord, *        like the watercourses of the Negev. 6 Those who sowed with tears *        will reap with songs of joy. 7 Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, *        will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves. or My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; *         for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: *        the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him *        in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, *        he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, *        and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, *        and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, *        for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, *        to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *        as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Epistle: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 16Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise the words of prophets, 21but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 22abstain from every form of evil. 23May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this. Gospel: John 1:6-8, 19-28 6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 19This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” 21And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,'” as the prophet Isaiah said. 24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”26John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, 27the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.” 28This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

The media is also banking on the ignorance of the populace when they try and blame earthquakes and volcanic activity on climate.Simple differences between climate, weather, geophysical studies, and seismology have been blurred in a way that there should be a new scientific nomenclature where we can lump it all together.originally Broadcast On 6/7/19This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4878838/advertisement

Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2023 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that a man took and planted in the garden. When it was fully grown, it became a large bush and the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches.” Luke 13:18–19This short parable should speak to many people far more than they realize. It should be a source of great encouragement to us all as we seek to build up the Kingdom of God through apostolic works. The mustard seed is very small. At first, when someone holds it in their hand, they may not think much of it. But if they did plant it under ideal conditions, that seed could grow into a tree upwards of 20 feet tall.Jesus uses this parable to teach us many lessons. One such lesson is that of our apostolic works of charity. When you think of the call of being an apostle for the Lord, spreading the Gospel to the ends of the earth, what comes to mind? Perhaps the first thought is of those who have been entrusted with a very large, public and vibrant ministry. In this case, it is easier to see the good fruit born of one's apostolic works. But what about you? For most people, they may strive to love and serve others in every small way they can, and they fail to see the abundance of good fruit born from their efforts. When this happens, some may become discouraged and lose zeal for the spreading of the Gospel. If this is you, then consider the mustard seed. Planting this small seed is representative of much of our apostolic endeavors. God calls us to do small acts of kindness, share our faith in subtle and even hidden ways, serve out of love even when it is unnoticed, and to do so without ceasing. Do these small acts bear fruit for the Kingdom of God? If you believe this parable of the mustard seed, then the answer must be a resounding “Yes.”Many times in life, we will never see the full effects that our actions have on others. Our negative influence will affect them far more than we realize. And our loving acts of charity, by which we share our faith, will also affect people far more than we realize. Believing in the message of this Parable of the Mustard Seed should lead us to believe that planting those small seeds of faith, through our charity, virtues, and words, will indeed bear an abundance of good fruit, far more than we may ever know, until we enter the glories of Heaven. Reflect, today, upon your duty to daily plant the smallest seeds of faith and love. Do not get discouraged if your efforts do not bear abundantly obvious fruit. Simply commit yourself to the planting, over and over. Take delight in sowing the seed of faith and see this as your mission. If you do this throughout your life, from Heaven you will look back and be amazed at how God powerfully brought forth His Kingdom through those seemingly insignificant acts of faith and love.My glorious King, You desire that Your Kingdom grow far and wide through our efforts of love. Please do use me, dear Lord, to plant Your seeds of faith and charity every day. May I never tire of these apostolic endeavors and may I always take great delight in serving You and building Your Kingdom in every way I can. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2023 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

JESUS PEOPLE ARE FILLEDThe Jesus People – Part 2Springcreek Church | Senior Pastor Keith StewartOctober 1, 2023#realspringcreekchurch #thejesuspeople #jesuspeoplearefilled #jesuspeopleareempowered #jesus #father #god #holyspirit #spirit #spiritfilled #presence #church #wearethechurchBeing Spirit-filled is one of only four commandments given to us in the New Testament in regard to the Holy Spirit. So it's vitally important to our spiritual life to understand what that means, how it happens, and why it's so essential. Join us this Sunday as we delve deeper into our relationship with the Holy Spirit as He makes our life look more and more like Jesus People.SERIES: The Jesus PeopleIn the late 60s and early 70s, a counter-cultural Christian movement began in California among young people called the Jesus People. It happened at the height of the sexual revolution and drug culture of the time, young people sincerely hungered for the supernatural and were finding it in Jesus even when they couldn't find it in the institutional church. In this series, we want to ask the question, "What does it mean to be the Jesus People today in a world where people seem to have lost their way and find the institutional church irrelevant?" DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. Pastor Keith began this message by exploring the connection between what happened in the book of Acts around Pentecost and Israel's ages-long festival of Shavuot. Sometimes, we miss important connections like these because we're lacking in our Old Testament knowledge and customs of the Jewish people. Take some time to discuss what were some of the parallels Pastor Keith pointed out between the birth of the church and the birth of the nation of Israel. If you want an excellent resource to do some of this exploration for yourself, check out some of the books by Kenneth E. Bailey (Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes, Paul Through Mediterranean Eyes, and others).2. The New Testament only gives four commands related to the Holy Spirit. Two are positive and two are negative.Live by the Spirit.                    Galatians 5.16Be filled with the Spirit.         Ephesians 5.18Do not grieve the Spirit.         Ephesians 4.30Do not quench the Spirit.       1 Thessalonians 5.19This message only explored the concept behind the commandment in Ephesians 5.18. What do the other commands mean? Can you give examples of them?3. Being Spirit-filled is NOT a one-time event. Even the command in Ephesians 5.18 makes that clear since it literally says, “be being filled” with the Spirit. This means, being Spirit-filled is a lifestyle, not a one-time event. The question is always are we yielding to the Spirit's control and direction today, not did we do that at some point in the past? How do you cooperate with the Holy Spirit? How do you yield to Him? When we grieve or quench the Spirit, we are not choosing to be filled, have you ever grieved or quenched the Holy Spirit? Give an example.4. Which best describes your life and why?- A motorboat, a raft, or a sailboat?- The “L” train in Chicago?- God has a monopoly on my life?5. If you're a child of God, you have the Holy Spirit. The question is, does He have all of you? We have all we need in the resources God has provided and especially in the indwelling Holy Spirit. So why do so many Christians live beneath their privilege? Why do we live like paupers on oil-rich land (like Mr. Yates)? Why do we struggle in life depending exclusively on ourselves and our abilities when we have the power of God in the Holy Spirit? If you ever lived that way or are living that way right now, what do you think is the number one reason why people don't allow the Holy Spirit to fill their lives?

If I get something wrong, which I frequently do, they will correct me and I've invited them to be live so that as we go through this, if I get something wrong, they can say, or if the Court has any questions about what we've done and all of the efforts that have gone into this and where we are with the status of the withdrawals.00:02:50I'm not going to bore the Court with the history, but as you know, we filed the bankruptcy petition on May 8th. The Court entered the customer withdrawal order on June 13th. We reopened the platform on June 15th.00:03:06This is consistent with the main goal of the case, which was to set up a process by which Bittrex USA operations could be wound down, along with the sister company Bittrex Malta, which is a Maltese organization that has been roughly out of operation since late 2018.00:03:30So to that end, if you turn to slide six, you can see our Chapter 11 timeline to where we are today.00:03:38Of course, we have a disclosure statement hearing coming up on the 27th.00:03:44Right.00:03:45And this is sort of to get everybody, you know, oriented correctly as we face that.00:03:51So far, I will say we have gotten only informal comments and nothing momentous with respect to the disclosure statement or the plan. We're getting language, incorporating it. All of that's going to plan.00:04:05Turning to slide eight, as I mentioned, we still have to comply as we're doing customer withdrawals with the various regulatory requirements for the payment.00:04:20KYC and KML stuff.00:04:22The main that I call them, Finson and OFAC.00:04:25Finson is concerned with financial crimes.00:04:29They want to have all the KYC information from the customer.00:04:32So are you really who you say you are?00:04:35And they also want to know that, you know, you're not engaging in some kind of money laundering.00:04:42So that's that's really what they're about.00:04:45OFAC is concerned with persons in foreign countries engaging in financial transactions in the U.S.00:04:54So those two regulatory requirements are built into the algorithms of the platform.00:05:00OK.00:05:03So we also wanted them to update, accept the updated terms of service, which also incorporate these regulatory requirements. And so that process has been underway.00:05:17So in conjunction with that, there was, of course, an increase in activity with the help desk.00:05:24The company engaged overtime help desk assistance.00:05:31And that has continued all the way through August 31st when the help desk was shut down, consistent with the August 31st, 2023, part eight.00:05:47So that help desk activity kind of demonstrates how much the company has been working with the customers.00:05:53There's been forty seven thousand plus customer help desk tickets and a lot.00:06:01And then the other the other interesting thing is there's two factor authentication.00:06:06Obviously, this is dealing with financial assets.00:06:08And so that process of, you know, I know in my law firm to get logged on in the morning, sometimes it takes me 15 minutes as I'm going through all of the steps.00:06:19The same thing happens on this platform. So you have two factor authentication.00:06:23You're going to get a text to your phone and an email.00:06:26And those two things combined give you, you know, the best security, high level confidence that you're dealing with the right person.00:06:37Thirty five thousand nine hundred seventy two customers have withdrawn their like kind assets for a total value of one hundred and forty three point seven six million dollars worth of crypto.00:06:48This is in addition to approximately twenty three million that was withdrawn during the April wind down period immediately before the petition was filed.00:07:00So on slide eleven. We've broken these numbers down.00:07:08By the number of customers remaining and the number of customers that have withdrawn.00:07:20So the value of crypto withdrawn is one hundred and forty three point six point seven six million broken down between Bittrex US of ninety five million and Bittrex Malta of forty eight million.00:07:39OK. So one of the things we wanted to explore was why were we getting such low levels of engagement.00:07:46And so in the beginning and so we broke it down between customers with balances over one hundred dollars and customers with balances under one hundred dollars and of the remaining customers.00:07:58Their balances are under one hundred dollars. That's the number of those is seventy seven percent of the remaining customers have balances under one hundred dollars.00:08:09So we have a combination that you've talked about earlier. We have what may be stale accounts with dated or old or ineffective contact information and then basically relatively modest amounts that nobody's necessarily wondering where my money go.00:08:25Correct your honor. OK. And I will tell you anecdotally I've been monitoring things like the Bittrex Twitter Bittrex Reddit.00:08:33You know the various sites where customers are engaging more frankly and the sentiment is you know I don't want to give you all that information to get to get thirty five dollars correct.00:08:49OK. They really are making a calculated decision. They know about it and we're going to go through the notice process in a bit. But we have also prioritized we took a list of the crypto customers that remained and we put them in in rank order of highest to lowest and we engage with them directly.00:09:11Send them an email not just a group email sent them an email and said hey you've got this much you need to get it off. And so that's where we've seen a lot of success. You know understandably.00:09:21OK. So 11 of the top 50 customers by balance have withdrawn substantially all their assets for a total of eight point seven million of withdrawn balances. Five hundred and seventeen of the seven hundred and one users with a balance over one hundred thousand have withdrawn substantially all of their assets.00:09:44And so that you know prioritizing the large dollar dollar customers has really paid off in terms of getting the crypto off. Most of the remaining accounts are inactive and have been inactive for a year or more.00:09:58Fifty one point two percent have been active in the last two years. Only forty one point one percent of the remaining funds are associated with user accounts that have shown no activity since December 31 of 2019.00:10:15The story with them is most of them signed up with inadequate information.00:10:20OK.00:10:24Also we've been actively engaging with the government on a couple of accounts. Some of the accounts were involved in criminal proceedings criminal forfeiture proceedings and we've cooperated with the U.S. Attorney's Office the Justice Department and the SEC to withdraw those amounts that were subject to those criminal forfeiture proceedings.00:10:45The Secret Service had one of our largest accounts of six point two million dollars.00:10:55We worked with that agency for them to successfully withdraw that amount.00:11:00OK. As I said.00:11:03Notice has been extremely robust. We knew it was going to be a large number of potential creditors. We we did not spare.00:11:16We spent every dollar that was responsibly spent to get notice out.00:11:22But this is in addition to the numerous emails that have gone out to customers throughout the history of the company in particular Bittrex Malta because it shut down operations in 2019.00:11:34It's since you know more than a million emails to its users in October of 2019 advising them that it was shutting down its platform.00:11:46So it was known as Bittrex International at that time and it the company decided it no longer wanted to operate Bittrex International.00:11:56So it started shutting down and moving those accounts over to Bittrex Global.00:12:01So additional notices went out as reflected on this slide and they were notified at the end of 2019.00:12:13The Bittrex International was no longer going to support those accounts.00:12:19So that was over the course of a year. A lot of effort went into getting customers off that platform.00:12:24Sure. Now Bittrex US made the decision to shut down its platform in late March of 2020.00:12:35But even before that Bittrex had reached out to customers with inactive balances starting in March of 2022.00:12:48It emailed inactive customers and asked them to update their account information and to otherwise interact with the platform.00:13:00Inactive accounts also got letters in August of 2022 and in 2023 Bittrex mailed postcards to additional inactive customers.00:13:14As I said in March of 2023 Bittrex announced via Twitter that it was shutting down its US operations.00:13:22It sent an email to 1,045,323 users. Reminder emails were sent to 521,000 accounts on various dates in April.00:13:36Between March 31 and April 30 the customer support team resolved 27,000 help desk tickets.00:13:45After the bankruptcy 1.6 million customers got notice of the commencement via email.00:13:59Regular mail went to 44,000 parties in interest including certain customers where we knew their email wasn't good.00:14:09In total via email or regular mail Omni served the notice of the commencement on 1.652 million customers.00:14:21We similarly adopted a robust approach to the bar date notice knowing how important it was in the case of this type.00:14:30Could you remind me what's the bar date? What was the bar date?00:14:32The bar date was August 31. This status report may seem random but it happens to happen after the bar date before the disclosure statement.00:14:43That gets pretty timely.00:14:47That bar date went to even more customers, 1.9 million customers and regular mail to 57,000 parties in interest.00:14:59In total 2 million customers received either email or mail notice of the bar date.00:15:10There was also publication notice in CoinDesk, Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times of London and the Financial Times of Malta.00:15:21It's not just financial. All of those publication notices have been filed on the docket.00:15:33There have been also social media efforts on Twitter. Twitter messages in June, July, and at the end of July.00:15:43There was a Reddit message on July 26. There was a text message where SMS had been authorized for the customers on August 2.00:15:52Can I ask just out of curiosity, who is doing that messaging via Twitter? Is that coming directly from the company or is that being managed by Omni or Kroll or somebody else?00:16:01It's being done by the company through the company's normal social media accounts.00:16:10As I said, I've been monitoring them as well, looking at customer feedback and seeing if there was anything that looked like a customer had a legitimate break.00:16:21We've been dealing with those throughout.00:16:25In addition, we prioritized balances over $100,000 and sent an additional mail to postcard to 73,000 customers on August 3.00:16:44We detailed the emails that have gone out to the email addresses on the platform and how those were targeted towards different groups with certain balances or locations in an attempt to provide as much notice as possible to the customers.00:17:06In addition to the withdrawals, the debtors have received 3,292 claims, of which 3,240 are customer proofs of claim and 52 are non-customer proofs of claim.00:17:19We, just so the court knows, it is our intention because some of the claims were filed by customers with very large amounts in them. One such claim had $160 million claimed.00:17:36We do plan on starting the proof of claim objection process soon, in the next few weeks.00:17:46We are cordially happy to accommodate scheduling in connection with that.00:17:50Thank you, Your Honor.00:17:51While I usually like to get creditors' votes before I object to their claims in this case, the proof of claim process is going to require company resources to resolve them.00:18:04It is as much a cost saving measure as it is trying to get to the bottom of these claims for feasibility purposes as well. The $150 million claim plus the SEC plus FinCEN, OFAC, that might get on the edge of feasibility.00:18:22We are going to have some of those objections filed.00:18:25Okay. I understand.00:18:28We filed our plan and disclosure statement on August 25th. We have our disclosure statement hearing on September 26th.00:18:39For disclosure purposes, we've only unimpaired priority claims because they're statutorily unimpaired. Everybody else is going to get a chance to vote.00:18:50Whether or not they're impaired will lead for a confirmation objection, but everybody's going to get to vote.00:18:57That leaves our next few deadlines of disclosure statement hearing.00:19:033018 motions on 929. Voting is on October 16.00:19:11Confirmation hearing is October 23rd.00:19:17If the court has any other questions, we wanted to present that to the court showing where we are post-BAR date, pre-discourse statement.00:19:27This is particularly helpful to me. I appreciate getting the heads up.00:19:30Again, as I said, I really don't have much visibility.00:19:33Most of the activity you've described is not necessarily taking place on the docket or in open court.00:19:41At the outset of this case, you all reported that there were many, many holders or potential holders and lots of people with an interest in this exercise.00:19:50You laid out with, I think, specificity what your intentions were in terms of dealing with those folks.00:19:58I think you started and repeated a number of times that the circumstances of this particular crypto case are very different from most of the others that are pending or in the ABI headlines.00:20:08I get it. Let me ask you a question.00:20:11It is just, frankly, out of curiosity.00:20:13I confess that I have not gone back and looked again at the plan and the disclosure statement.00:20:17That hearing is coming up in a couple of weeks, and I will certainly be prepared for that.00:20:22The process that you've just described clearly leads to an assumption that there will be significant assets and the number of parties that have lost interest in this exercise.00:20:36They've only got $25, $50, $100 with you. They don't want to fill out a bunch of paperwork over it. They haven't thought about this since 2018. I get it.00:20:45This would seem to me, then, to be one of these cases that has a fair number of assets at the end of it that need to be disposed of, and I assume that the plan provides for the mechanism for doing that.00:21:03Is there an expectation that there will be funds left over that are not claimed by creditors, and do they then get used in the implementation of the plan, or are they given away, or is geded, or I don't know exactly what happens?00:21:18Sources and uses?00:21:19Yeah.00:21:20So we're going to have claims. We have settlements with FinCEN, OPAC, and the SEC. Those are significant numbers.00:21:27Right.00:21:28We have the costs of administration. We have the claims that are on file, so those will all come out of whatever is left.00:21:37But at this point, one of the reasons why we want to do some claim objections is to make sure we have enough to pay all the claims, and if those are successful, I believe there will be money left over.00:21:51Okay.00:21:52Well, the claims reconciliation process is an exercise that, as you described, is often one that depends upon the judgment and discretion of the debtor about the fights that are, whether it's worth picking these fights, but obviously some of these steps may need to be taken in the context of the confirmation process.00:22:12If you need scheduling with respect to claims administration, again, you can contact Ms. Velo in my chambers, and she'll be happy to give you hearing data if you need it.00:22:20Correct. We've been working with Mr. Enos in terms of coming up with any kind of procedures that we're going to conform with the local rules.00:22:31I will tell you our approach is we're going to take the low-hanging fruit first, which is duplicates.00:22:41Yeah, you separate wheat from chaff.00:22:43Yeah, but in the very large claims that were filed that have no correlation with what is shown on the debtor's books and records.00:22:51Okay.00:22:52Well, I do not have any questions and again I very much appreciate getting the report.00:23:00You know this case has unusual features, but all the crypto cases do but these are at least features that I can understand when they're explained to me.00:23:09Yes, Mr. Sheppard Carter, did you have anything to answer?00:23:14Sure.00:23:17For the record, Richard Park, the United States, trustee, we haven't completed our review of the plan disclosure statement and the procedures, of course, attended there to the deadlines 21st.00:23:27I'm hoping that by Friday, I can get out my comments to counsel.00:23:32I like to do it that way, get the comments out, see if we can work through what we can work through. If we have to file objections, we'll take that up into the course.00:23:42I think after that, we'll just go to plan confirmation and we'll see where we go from there and hopefully we get there in the middle of October.00:23:53Very good.00:23:54Other than that, if nothing else, you're all invited.00:23:56I note that we have a number of parties that are participating virtually. I would ask if anyone else wishes to be heard with respect to the debtor's status report to the court on developments in the Chapter 11 case.00:24:13Hearing no response, again, I very much appreciate getting the status report from the debtor. I had no further questions.00:24:19As noted, if the debtor requires scheduling or other support from the court as you move forward through the disclosure statement and into plan confirmation, all you need to do is call chambers and we'll be happy to accommodate with any scheduling needs that you have.00:24:34But with that, I believe we are adjourned. Thank you, counsel.00:24:37We stand in recess.

Jesus, I trust in You. Have you ever wondered if you're spending too much time on your phone or computer? Well, then you're certainly not alone. Screen use behaviors are top of mind for so many people these days - and for good reason. Over the last few years, our world has fully transformed itself around this technology to a point where spending a majority of our day looking at a screen has become the norm in much of our society. And although screen overuse was a problem pre-pandemic, the issue has accelerated exponentially over the last few years, bringing with it an array of crisis-level challenges for so many people. So what can we do to achieve screen time sanity in today's digital world? To help answer this question, I reached out to Dr. Clifford Sussman, a renowned child and adolescent psychiatrist in the Washington, DC area, who supports kids and their families who are at the extreme end of struggling with finding balance in their screen use - and I say balance because, well let's face it... screens are an avoidable part of life in today's world and its future. As a remote-working parent with a tween who loves video games and a teen who loves her phone, I find it very challenging to find a healthy balance, not feel like a hypocrite, and just feel OKAY about my own screen use decisions. However, I learned from my conversation with Dr. Sussman that there are practical things we can all do to find that balance for ourselves and those in our lives we care about. Listen in to our conversation and learn some practical strategies you can use to achieve screen time sanity and find your own balance in our modern digital world. Here are some links to more information about Dr. Sussman and this episode's topic.Learn More About Dr. SussmanDr. Sussman's Website on TrainingsThe Ross Center - Assessment and Treatment of Digital Use DisordersDr. Sussman's YouTube ChannelThe Ross CenterScreen Use & Executive Function SkillsBeyond BookSmart's collaboration with Dr. SussmanScreenagers by Delaney RustonContact us!Reach out to us at podcast@beyondbooksmart.comIG/FB/TikTok @beyondbooksmartcoachingTranscriptHannah Choi 00:00Hi everyone and welcome to Focus Forward, an executive function podcast where we explore the challenges and celebrate the wins you'll experience as you change your life by working on improving your executive function skills. I'm your host, Hannah Choi. Hannah Choi 00:00Okay, confession time. Are you listening to me but also looking at something on your phone? It's okay if you are, we can't help it. Instagram, tick tock games, even news websites are created in ways that make you want it. Need it, even when you're doing something else. Our screen use behaviors are top of mind for many people these days. Before the pandemic, it was a problem. Now, for some it's a crisis. Hannah Choi 00:00I reached out to Dr. Clifford Sussman, a child and adolescent psychiatrist in the Washington, DC area, who supports kids and their families who are at the extreme end of struggling with finding balance and their screen use. And notice I said balance. What I learned from Dr. Susman is that balance is the key screens are a part of life, they're not going anywhere. We all know that they have many, many benefits. And when used in a healthy way, we can learn some pretty great skills that apply to other areas of our lives. As a parent of a tween who loves video games, and a teen who loves her phone. And as someone who works remotely from home on a computer for much of the day, married to a partner who also works remotely from home and is literally on a computer all day, I find it very challenging to find a healthy balance and not feel like a hypocrite and just feel okay about my own screen use decisions. I learned from Dr. Sussman that there are practical things that we can do to find that balance for ourselves, and connect with our kids to help them find it. And notice that I didn't say they're easy things we can do. It's definitely not easy. But there is some hope in there that with some focused and thoughtful effort, we can hopefully find that balance and feel better about our own screen use. And if we have kids, there's too. Okay, onto the show. Hannah Choi 00:00Hi, Cliff. Thanks so much for joining me on my podcast.Dr. Cliff Sussman 02:17Thanks for having me.Hannah Choi 02:18Um, would you like to introduce yourselves to our listeners?Dr. Cliff Sussman 02:21Sure, sure. My name is Dr. Clifford Sussman. I'm a child and adolescent psychiatrist. And I actually specialize in treating internet and video game use disorders. So all of my patients pretty much have some form of problems with excessive screen use.Hannah Choi 02:42Yeah, and that is a hot topic, especially after coming out of that, after having gone through the pandemic and even before, so how did you? How did you get into that? Why is that? How did it become such an important issue for you?Dr. Cliff Sussman 02:57Well, I guess it started, or, you know, early in childhood, discovering I love computers, myself, and I love screens myself. And I was I was always on video games when I was younger, or trying to design them myself. And then eventually learned to code and, and, you know, got really into all that stuff. And then when I became a psychiatrist, and went into private practice, specializing in mostly teenagers, parents were coming in from the day I started about 15 years ago, and telling me that their kids were addicted to video games. So this is long before the pandemic. And I would evaluate these kids because oftentimes, the parents had been that had been dismissed by by the providers they'd seen before me. And so but I would evaluate these kids and I find out that, you know, look, they, they, they have a lot of the same problems that the people I'm seeing, that I saw in my addiction rotations during residency had, you know, the seeking the, the constantly lying, the stealing, the aggression, the defensiveness, the, you know, all sorts of problems with, with, with, with the family, in the family. So, I decided to really do some research, you know, just do a lot of read a lot of studies about how the brain was affected by excessive screen use and comparing those studies to how the brain was accessed was affected by use of other substances. And, you know, started finding a lot of similarities. And eventually I decided that this problem was becoming so big and these people really needed help. That I just I decided that I really could just just work on that. And yeah, and so that there was a lot more demand than supply and providers for this problem and So, you know, and I would collaborate with a few other colleagues who are recognizing this too. You know, when we compare notes on how, you know, what was working and what wasn't. And I would base a lot of my treatments on treatments that had been effective for drug addiction, such as motivational interviewing, motivational interviewing, which is a type of psychotherapy, that's like a mix of cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. And, you know, and it just sort of took off from there. And then, after the pandemic, the problem got to be so huge, even during the pandemic, but especially when people started returning to schools and having more demands placed on them. That, you know, I decided that there was no way that I could handle all the cases, you know, and my and a few of my colleagues who are who are recognizing this. And so, I decided to start putting a lot of focus and doing things like this, where I can educate the community, and I even have a lot of stuff now, where I'm training other providers, a lot of doing courses for other providers online, and things like that.Hannah Choi 06:16That's great. I would love to talk with you more about that later on. I do have a question for you about the brain. You mentioned the brain, what? What happens in the brain? And I know that there's dopamine involved, but maybe for our listeners, you can explain what happens in the brain when, you know, when someone really feels like they need to be on a screen.Dr. Cliff Sussman 06:43Yeah, yeah, that's, I mean, that that is it is related to dopamine. And so So dopamine is the neurotransmitter that we release, it's thought of as the pleasure neurotransmitter. So people think we just release it when we get pleasure. But it's a little more nuanced than that we release dopamine when we get exactly what we want, when we want. So I think people people think of if you got pleasure, but it was very delayed, you know, you wouldn't release as much dopamine as if you got the same pleasure right away. So that's why things like cigarettes, which don't get you nearly as high as other drugs, but get you that buzz right away, because you smoke it, and the smoke goes right into your bloodstream, they release a lot of dopamine, and our, you know, easily as addictive as much more intoxicating drugs that have more delayed. So, you know, it was a real survival, a real survival neurotransmitter. Because, you know, when you're, let's say, a caveman, you, you need something right away, it helps you survive if you get it right away. Right, right, you know, so you know, you want to satisfy those needs immediately. Before you get eaten by a saber toothed Tiger.Hannah Choi 08:14We don't want that to happen.Dr. Cliff Sussman 08:16So yeah, so what happens in the brain when, when, when we're on anything that gives us instant gratification. And in particular screens, because that gives us not just instant gratification, but continuous instant gratification, is it the brain releases lots of dopamine. And you know, there's nothing wrong with that, what's the problem is when you keep doing it, and when the brain keeps releasing dopamine for hours and hours on end, right, like cavemen never got what they wanted for that long at a time. I mean, so the brain wasn't designed to handle that much of getting what you want for that long time. And so what happens is you become desensitized to dopamine, the receptors in the brain for dopamine, they, they go through a process called downregulation. And that and a bunch of other more complicated processes, basically result in you needing to work even harder to get instant gratification. And, and getting the same amount of dopamine that you did before won't feel as good. So you need even more. And so that's why that's one of the reasons why it's just so hard to get off screen. When you've been on it for a really long time. You know, when when you get off and stop getting that dopamine. Now you you actually feel worse than before you start.Hannah Choi 09:43Right. So you want to get back on to avoid that feeling.Dr. Cliff Sussman 09:49 Yeah, and that's really basically the process in all addictions.Hannah Choi 09:52Yeah, right, right. Yeah.Dr. Cliff Sussman 09:54So it's like it's like too much of a good thing. You know, I don't and I like it. said I enjoy gaming, you know, so I don't I don't think that that using a video game for a half an hour or an hour is such a terrible thing. I think it can be a great experience. And there's lots of even educational opportunities or, you know, opportunities to solve puzzles are make friends or do all sorts of great things, right? Yeah. But it's the hours and hours and hours on end. And when people during the pandemic, we're living in the virtual world instead of the real world, it really got to be a big problem.Hannah Choi 10:31Yeah, right. So I had a personal experience with this. A couple of weeks ago, my son and I both had COVID at the same time, so he and I were all like, we're Yeah, it was, yeah, it was not fun. And, and so we were both isolated, we're both the same room, and I had work I had to do, and he did not feel great. So I let him use his, like, play Minecraft and do screens like, kind of all day. And I, I felt so guilty because I know!Dr. Cliff Sussman 11:03And that was the first time you'd done that? Because most parents I've worked with have found that out, have crossed that a long time ago, you knowHannah Choi 11:11Yeah, I mean, I guess I had done it. But it hadn't been in a while. And it hadn't been for so many days. And I did notice afterwards, he had a hard time, like thinking of something else to do. And, and I didn't feel great. So I had a hard time motivating myself to encourage him to do something different. So I can see how...Dr. Cliff Sussman 11:36Everything else starts to pale in comparison. Yeah, you know, it can turn an, you know, I like to divide activities into what I call high dopamine activities. I use HDA for short and long dopamine activities, or LDA. And I call you know, the, there's a lot of low dopamine activities that are enjoyable, meaning activities that just require more patience that have more delay in their gratification, but they're still gratifying. Right? So you know, so we're not just talking about homework and exercise, we're also talking about things like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, you know, painting a picture, learning to play an instrument. These things, you know, those are the types of things that your son might really enjoy doing, until they've, you know, gotten a taste of a high dopamine activity for a very long time. You know, and then all of a sudden, those other things, just, you know, well, the thing you heard all the time during the pandemic was I'm bored. There's nothing to do.Hannah Choi 12:39Yeah, there's nothing right. Yeah, yeah. It's funny that you say play an instrument. So my son plays piano, and I, I'm thinking about it, like I did notice when we came out of isolation, and we were back in the real world, it was harder for him to like, sit down and play the piano, but I am noticing over the past few days, he's, he's kind of getting back into it now. So that's not permanent.Dr. Cliff Sussman 13:04And you don't want to forget that. I played the piano when I was a kid for a couple years. And I think I said to my mom, you know, look, for my seventh birthday, can I just quit piano because the processing is really boring, and I don't want to have to learn all the skills. And she's like, okay, you know, and, and then a couple years later, I guess when I became a teenager, I was like, I really wish I knew how to play an instrument. Mom, why did you let me I took up guitar instead. Okay, so that's good. But yeah, it's important when kids get bored with their instruments, not to like, Forget everything they know, and just come away from it to try and just pick it up every now and then keep it a little fresh.Hannah Choi 13:48Right, right. So that makes me think of like, how can this might be jumping ahead a little bit, but how can people balance? How can people find a nice balance between those LDAs and HDA active, activities?Dr. Cliff Sussman 14:04Well, you're hitting the nail on the head. I mean, to me, that's the real key is finding a balance, right? Because you're definitely let's face it in this world, you're not going to have abstinence from the digital world. You know, and it's impossible. Yeah. And and, you know, you wouldn't function very well if you did, to be honest. So it really is about finding balance. And so I have a lot of suggestions for how to do that on my website that you were referring to earlier at CliffordSussmanmd.com. But I can try to highlight some of the main ones. So I think the some of the biggest keys are having a lot of structure in your schedule. You know, having and keeping a schedule, you know, keeping a routine that was so important during the pandemic, when you know, prior to the pandemic, a big ratio of my patients were first year college dropouts, because they went from the highly structured setting of high school to the unstructured setting of college. And so that allows for hours and hours of binging. Well, during the pandemic, it basically like every high school kid became a college kid, because they were at home with like, very little structure. And so, you know, so structure is really key to balance. Having something to do at a certain time until a certain time, you know, getting your kids involved in daily repeating activities, like sports, or music, or joining a chorus or something like that Robotics Club. So that's important. I would also say that setting some some time limits, consistent time limits to how long you can be on a screen, but also, how long you need to be off a screen or at least doing a low dopamine activity, if it is on a screen until you can get on again, it's really important for balance. But the number one thing is, as I already alluded to, is not binging you know, so. So if you're, if you're keeping each screen block to a consistent length of time, that's, let's say, an hour or less, depending on the age of the child, and waiting at least that amount of time before you get on again, you know, especially during unstructured time, then then I think you're going to be way ahead of the game for most families. And that's how I'd answer that.Hannah Choi 16:47Yeah, those are really great suggestions. And, and I like that there is so much balance built into all of those suggestions. So it really does show that that is the key. So it's something that we had talked about earlier, and I had never I had never thought about this before. But you, you talked about how people use the word addiction, like screen addiction, casually, like "Oh, I'm so addicted to my screen". But that's not technically true. Right? Can you explain to the listeners, what the difference is between addiction and what you said was functional dependence?Dr. Cliff Sussman 17:25Yeah, well, so. So what addiction really means is that you're you can't get off of something, despite the problems it's causing for you. So it's, it's the inability to control an activity. Combined with it having causing dysfunction in your life. And the level of addiction is measured by not how many hours you're on a screen, or how much of a drug you're taking, but how much it's negatively affecting your life. So, and I do think people think of addiction as kind of an all or nothing thing, but it really is, to me, it's more of a continuum, like you can be really addicted to something. If you're you've like dropped out of school, and you still earn 1000s of dollars, and you know, your life is completely in shambles. Or you can be a little addicted to something if you know, dropped your grades from an A to a B minus, you know, so. But I mean, I think kids generally when they say this game is so addictive, what they mean is that they can't stop playing. And so they're not completely wrong, you know, because it is designed that way to make it so they can't stop playing. As far as like, being dependent on something that just means you know what it sounds like, like you need it, like you can't function without it. And so, you know, you can be the you can be dependent on something without being addicted to it if you still can manage your life and live a good life that's successful, where you're getting what you need out of it. And so, yeah, I mean, I think, I mean, think of a diabetic dependent on insulin, right? I mean, they can't live without it. But that doesn't mean that it's dysfunctional to take right, you know, and so a lot of us really need our screens. We need them like right now we're on screens, you know, that that doesn't make us addicted, right. We're using it in a functional way now. Yeah. So yeah, that's, that's, does that answer your question?Hannah Choi 19:36Yeah. Yeah, it does. And what you just said reminds me of going back to when my son and I were isolating together in during the time of COVID I was on my I felt guilty because I was on my screen. So I felt a little bit like I was being, you know, hypocritical, because I was saying, like, you need to get off and here I am, you know, typing away on my screen. And, but I didn't want to be on, I had to be on there.Dr. Cliff Sussman 20:04You were doing low dopamine screen actors,Dr. Cliff Sussman 20:06Yeah, it was very low-dopamine!Dr. Cliff Sussman 20:08You were setting a good example. But what I do see a lot of parents doing is, you know, they're on a cell phone, let's say, going down all these rabbit holes of social media, you know, saying to their kid to get off a video game that doesn't play very, you know, and there's definitely a lot of parents I work with who are who are sort of like, struggling themselves to get off their screens. And, you know, so and let's face it, like with all drug use, and all substances, with all behavioral addictions, like it runs in families, right, it's, there's a genetic component. So yeah, and by the way, you you mentioned this, this episode of, of you and your son being sick. And, you know, one of the problems with that is that you're trapped in the house, you know, you can't like go outside to do low dopamine activities, where there's probably a lot more dopamine activities, you know, so, but that also is a reason I emphasize, because people had to stay injuring COVID, you know, during for quarantine purposes, as well. So, I emphasized a lot of environmental cues, like being aware of environmental cues as as a big part of achieving balance. So if you're, if an alcoholic is avoids going in the bar, it's much harder, it's much easier to avoid having a drink, right? It's much harder when you're in the bar. Because you have all the cues of the bar, you have the sights, sounds and smells, you know, the, you see a row of bottles, you see the bartender, it's like, it's very hard to drink water in a bar. And so, so what I try to help parents do, and this is kind of a extended answer to your question about how to, you know, how do you get balance, because I try to help them have like low dopamine and high dopamine zones in the house. So you start to associate cues of like what activity you should be doing. So in other words, when we were, you know, before COVID, and since since the quarantines ended, when kids do their learning, they're in a classroom, right. And so they're sitting at a desk, they've got a teacher, they got a whiteboard, they've got hopefully other kids around, like, maybe some of them at least paying attention to the teacher. And, you know, so they've got the cues around them that, hey, it's time to learn, you know, but when they were, when they were taking class during COVID, they were on the same screen, they were playing Minecraft on all day. And usually, they had another screen open with Discord on it. So like, good luck, you know, that that's really trying to drink water in a bar. So that's why I emphasize a lot, like look at what your home looks like, you know, do you have a separate area for where they do their gaming? And for where they do their studying? You know, and they're sleeping, you know, are they just do they have a cell phone and three other devices next to their bed all the time or next to where they're doing their work? Because if so, good luck, you know, they're getting the wrong cues. You know, so I tried to emphasize having a zone in the house put aside kind of like an arcade room, where, when it's time for kids to have their high dopamine activities, they can go into that sort of arcade room. And, you know, all the devices will be in there. But the catch is that when that hour or whatever is up, maybe half an hour, if they're a little kid, the devices stay in there, and they leave. And they go back into the low dopamine zone. Yeah, a little zone, because so, so that way, you know what, what happens is, you don't have to rip a device out of the kid's hand, you just have to get them to go from one location to another.Hannah Choi 24:02Right, right. Yeah. And so then if it like, say, you don't have a separate place, could you just say, like, you always have to sit? Like if you're going to be using your game, your whatever, you have to sit at this table or something?Dr. Cliff Sussman 24:16Yeah. Although although usually if it's a teenager and you say you have to do something, they'll do the opposite. So yeah. You know, kind of work on how you how you discuss it with them, but that could be the rules that you agree on, you know, and, and, you know, and if you make rules like that, you can also clarify what the sort of natural or logical consequence of breaking those rules are, because they're going to, you know, so Right. Yeah. So like if for example, if they stay in the in the high dopamine room for longer than they're supposed to, you could agree on something like okay, you were in there five minutes too long. So you lose three times five, which is 15 minutes off the next lock in there. You And then you don't need a power struggle, you know? Yeah. Right. You can even reward them for getting off on their own in time. Just not with extra screen time. Yeah.Hannah Choi 25:10Yeah, you get half an hour more.Dr. Cliff Sussman 25:14Yeah, I mean, it's, it's, I that's a system that's worked for a lot of my parents.Hannah Choi 25:19And do would you say, in general, kids are open to talking with their parents about their screen use and in screen use behavior? And, and kind of discussing what it's like for them?Dr. Cliff Sussman 25:35Well, it depends on the kid, you know, and it depends on their age. And, you know, I mean, for so so that's a complicated question. You know, if you have a kid who's like really addicted to screens and kids, and really struggling with it, they may be in denial, which and so they may be get very defensive when parents tried to talk to them about it. But then at the same time, there's, there's like, it's a normal teenage thing to not want to discuss everything with your parents, and not necessarily want to share all your feelings with them, especially when you're in that early teenage, those early teenage years, like 12-13, because you're trying to like, sort out your, your identity among your peers, and you're trying to sort of push a cast aside the previous generation and join your peers. So, you know, so So I don't think parents should take it too, personally, if their kids don't want to talk about it. But you know, kids do like when their parents care about what they're interested in, you know, and if you, you know, can validate that they really enjoy their games, and that they really enjoy their computer and that they're not, you know, that, that it can be really tough for them to stop. You know, what you don't want to do as a parent and see, like I just, you know, you don't want to say to your kid, like, like that, you know, I don't understand why that's fun for you. That's, you know, that's not important. You shouldn't be doing because to them, it's very important. You know, it's, it's, you know, it's, it may be how they're socializing. It may be how, I mean, they may care a lot about how a lot more about how well they do in a video game than other things. And, you know, you may not agree with that, but you got to meet them where they are good luck reaching them,Hannah Choi 27:24you know, yeah, yeah, you can't reach them unless you validate them.Dr. Cliff Sussman 27:27Yeah. And validating a behavior is not the same as enabling it. You know, I think that's important for parents, just because you're acknowledging that a kid loves their video game, or that they're really upset about having to stop playing it. You know, rather than pretending they're not upset, you know, that that's not the same thing as saying, Oh, you can have all the games you want, you know?Hannah Choi 27:50Yeah, that's such an important point to remember.Dr. Cliff Sussman 27:55You can set limits, but then validate how, you know, the effect it's having on them, trying to abide by those limits.Hannah Choi 28:02Right. And then also, I imagine sharing your own experience with having challenges regulating your own screen use. And, you know, sharing Yeah, like, I get that, because I feel that way about whatever. And so. So for parents, those, those cues for the kids can also be the parents behavior, and just being a good role model. Right?Dr. Cliff Sussman 28:31Yeah. Yeah. I mean, look, kids are much more likely to do what we do than what we say. So, you know, I think the most effective way to really influence our kids being self regulated and balanced is to be that way ourselves and to work on that ourselves as parents and actually model that behavior. You know, and maybe even like, let let your child know, look, I you know, I set a timer, and I stopped when the timer went off, and it wasn't easy for me to do I want to keep doing it, but I have to get back to work, you know. So, you know, your, your basic your being a good influence on that type of behavior.Hannah Choi 29:14Yeah. Just thinking about my own house and how, how we do things. Yeah. And it's hard. I mean, it's it's really hard. You're right, they do. They the the makers of all these things, every website, every every social media app, every game, they make it so you want it. You want it bad, it's hard. Yeah, yeah. If you're just reading the news, you just pull down and then you got a whole new news article to read.Dr. Cliff Sussman 29:42Yeah, well, there's endless scrolling. It's all you know, it's all sort of designed and coded the way they know we'll get people to stay on the longest. So you know, and even they even have AI that does that. So, and you know, and they understand like the basic psychological concepts concepts of things like gambling, that, you know, if you, if you give people a different reward every time, and sometimes no reward at all. It's the whatever, whatever it is, they're going to do a lot more of than if you just reward them the same way each time. So that's called variable ratio reinforcement. And that's why, you know, when you're scrolling down, you know, sometimes it's like, for example, you may think, Okay, well, this AI isn't very good, because they keep showing me things in my feed that I'm not interested in at all right. And occasionally, I'll like one, and I'll click on it, you know, or occasionally, I'll find something that's interesting, you know, but I have to keep scrolling and scrolling until I actually find something. Well, guess what, that's what they want. They don't want you to like everything. I mean, for one thing, they can't get any information about you, if you like everything, but for another thing, you know, that it's not as addictive if you like everything. You know, it's actually more addictive, if you're disappointed sometimes. And if there's like, maybe I'll like the next one better, right? That's why you see people in the casinos just pulling those levers over and over again, on the slot machine.Hannah Choi 31:11Yeah, right, that same action. Dr. Cliff Sussman 31:14Like mice. Hannah Choi 31:17We're all just a bunch of mice. Don't those don't the makers of like the people that that apply that psychology? Don't they have some? Gosh, some guilt or something like, oh, they have to be, uhhh, I don't get it.Dr. Cliff Sussman 31:33Ethics and money don't always go together? But, you knowHannah Choi 31:35No, no.Dr. Cliff Sussman 31:36I mean, that's the world we're in. You know, I mean, I have very little control over the tech industry, I have a lot more say, I think and you know, what messages I can send to parents and kids about the way to cope with this type of, you know, just how to play the cards were dealt the best, you know, how to really, you know, maybe that was a bad analogy.Hannah Choi 32:02Bringing us back to gambling!Dr. Cliff Sussman 32:03Yeah, bringing us back to gambling. But yeah, I mean, just how to how to deal with this challenge that we're always faced with, you know, I mean, there's always, there's always struggles and challenges for humans to survive. And this is the one we have right now.Hannah Choi 32:19This is the one we have right now. Yeah, yep. Yeah. No more saber toothed tigers. That's good.Dr. Cliff Sussman 32:26Yeah, that's right. I mean, yeah, I guess we're doing a little better.Hannah Choi 32:32So what do you like, what about, are there any trends or things? You know, speaking of now that it's just it is just part of life? Is there anything that's really important for people to know about? About this? Like, is there any additional message that you would like to share with our listeners?Dr. Cliff Sussman 32:53Well, um, a lot of parents asked me about parental control software. I, again, I think if you have the boundaries, clear on things like, you know, low dopamine and high dopamine areas, you don't need as much of that, you know, I like direct parental engagement, I think that's a good healthy thing. And I think sometimes parents rely too much on computers to do it for them. And so like parental control software, and things like that. So it goes beyond just the fact that kids can hack around it, that I that I, you know, tell parents to not completely rely on parental control software, that it's important to have clear rules laid out and consequences and to be able to interact with your kids concerning those consequences. Without having major power struggles and being able to really, again, try to meet them where they are, but also, you know, set some limits. And, you know, and find a balance as a parent between setting limits, and allowing your kids to self regulate, and, and not to micromanage them too much, and let them learn from their own natural consequences.Hannah Choi 34:14Yeah, and if you don't provide them the opportunities to do that, when they do go off to college, or go move out of the house and move on to their own, then they're not going to have any experience to draw from, or resources to draw from. Exactly. Yeah. And it is difficult because there are so many resources out there and a lot of parents not resources, but a lot of those parental control apps or programs. And also, they may be their friends or using them to feel like oh, like maybe I should use this. You're my kid and it's harder to just like rely on your own your Yeah, relationship with your child.Dr. Cliff Sussman 35:02And, and, and even if other parents are using them. They may be, like, we don't know exactly how they're using them, ya know. So if even if you get the software, you know, it's, and you find that it helps for some things you don't want, it's just that you don't want to depend on it too much, you know, you don't want to over rely on it. Like, for example, I think that like screen time, the screen time app on iPhones, for example, is a good way to just track what your kids are doing online. Like it tells you what apps they're on, but it also tells you how much time they were on their phone. Yeah. You know, to some extent, and, you know, sometimes it can, it can misread things, but but the point is that it's a good way to just have feedback on what your kids are doing. But it's not doing the policing for you. It's not, like cutting them off, it's just giving you the information, it's just giving you the information. So it helps you monitor as the parent. And that's pretty useful. You know, if you don't want to be looking over their shoulder all the time, but at the same time, I think sometimes it's good to like actually go in the room where they're studying.Hannah Choi 35:14Yeah, whatcha doing? Yeah.Dr. Cliff Sussman 36:15I mean, if every time you go in while they're doing homework, they're like minimizing, you know, an app like, you know, something's you know, the homeworks not getting done.Hannah Choi 36:25Yeah, yeah. It's also beneficial for the kid to learn how many hours they're spending on it. I think that we don't realize how quickly time flies while we're on that. I had, I had a client who I had, he had never looked at his he was in college, and he had never looked at his screen time use. And so I just encouraged him to, and oh, my god, I just, my heart broke for him, I'll never in my life forget the way that his face, his jaw just dropped. He had no idea he wouldn't tell me the time.Dr. Cliff Sussman 36:58Yeah, it's called time distortion, you know, track of real world time. And it certainly happens to me when I play video games, which is why I set a timer. You know, it's like surprised by how soon it goes off.Hannah Choi 37:11I am not really I'm not into video games, and I'm not, I'm very much a like practical person when it comes to my phone. Like I'm on it a lot, but it's just because I'm like texting or researching something. But recently, I did look at my time totals, and I realized my Instagram was kind of out of control. Yeah, so I put a time limit on there. And it really has helped. Yeah. But but that's just me. And that's, you know, that's how I am. And I know, like for my son, it's a lot harder. He's and my husband to it's they're just different. They're very different for me with how they use their phones.Dr. Cliff Sussman 37:49Yeah, and social media is a big time suck. But, you know, look, I think that there's two skills that we need to have to be able to have use our devices in a healthy way. Like, we need to be able to delay our gratification, which means we can't be like checking our Instagrams every five minutes, you know, and, and then we need to be able to put on the brakes, like we need to be able to stop when it's time to stop, you know, when the timer does go off, we have to stop and move on. And transition. And those are two skills that we wouldn't really develop at all if we were just abstinent. You know, so it's like, it's actually. So I see screentime as an opportunity to work on those skills, you know, and, and so I'll present it to kids is kind of a challenge for them. You know, you, you know, if, if they were seeing me for cocaine, they I wouldn't be saying to them, Well, you know, you could try to wait before you use your cocaine and stop using in the middle. But you can you actually have that opportunity with screens? Yeah, you know, to work on those skills. And their skills, not just for screening is there. Yeah,Hannah Choi 39:01that's what I was. Right? I was just gonna say that. Yeah. Yep. So how can we, as you know, like me as an executive function coach and protect other practitioners who might not know about handling, screen, excessive screen use or screen addiction? How can we support our clients that might be struggling that with that,Dr. Cliff Sussman 39:28Right, so there is more education out there now on the nature of this problem, and also suggestions for how to how to manage it. So you could, I have a course for example, on the Ross Center website, it's and it provides CE credits for some practitioners. But for others, it's if you're not getting the credits, and you're just taking the course it's less expensive, so and it's a very inexpensive course to begin with so, so you can get the link for that at my website or just go to the Ross Center's website. Yeah, I mean, also, I think that there's, there's a, there's a lot of good resources, I was the technical editor for Overcoming Internet Addiction for Dummies. And I think that book came out nice. That was my colleague, David Greenfield. So, there's a lot of good stuff in there. You know, I think I think clinicians have to just be aware of it and start recognizing it, and they should also know, sort of the red flags to look for. And if they're, if they don't specialize in it, when they see those red flags, they should be able to, you know, maybe refer to somebody who's an expert in that. So just, you know, know, the signs of addiction. And, you know, I'll, of course look for things like kids. You know, mental health professionals know, for example, the screen for suicide, but that you should screen for, you know, is a kid threatening to kill themselves, particularly when the parents are taking the screen away. You know, I like they're there. So there's red flags that are more directly related to screen problems, you know?Hannah Choi 41:21And then I guess a related question would be, how can at what point should parents seek help outside of the, you know, tips and ideas that we've already talked about today?Dr. Cliff Sussman 41:34Well, parents should be aware of some red flags to just like clinicians should and then that, and that's definitely when to go for help. So things like, you know, excessive lying about screen use, stealing money to use screens, and the kids I work with aren't just, like, using their hacking skills to steal their parents credit card information on the computer, they're literally going into the wallets and removing the credit cards, like, That's how desperate they are to get on as fast as possible. There. Yeah. So also things like aggression, when you try to separate the kid from their screen. You know, just a lot of irritability, when they're not on their screen. You know, a lot of a lot of parents, if they can't get help immediately, and they really suspect there's a big problem, they may want to try just having like a, say, a three to seven day screen detox, you know, like, try going on a camping trip, or going on vacation somewhere and just getting your kids disconnected from the internetHannah Choi 42:47With a natural limitation on theDr. Cliff Sussman 42:49Yeah, with a lot of structure in the environment. And, you know, you will see, a lot of parents will see huge changes just from really after, I'd say the second day, they can start seeing kids, like their personalities completely changed. And a lot of those red flags like, seemingly gone, which doesn't mean that your problem is gone, it probably just proves you have the problem that you know, me because as soon as they get their screens back, you know, those those problems will come back. So that's when you have to learn the balance. But starting out with a detox is often a good approach.Hannah Choi 43:29Yeah. And I like how you suggested like, on like going camping or something where so it's not, it's not you as the parent saying, we can't. It's the nature nature is saying you can't. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's great. Is there anything else you'd like to share with our listeners that is?Dr. Cliff Sussman 43:51Well, just emphasize that that, like what you said at the beginning, that there's a lot of more information they can get on my website. So CliffordSussmanmd.com.Hannah Choi 44:06Yeah, you have to check out i'll put the link in the show notes. Cliff's website is just packed full of really, really, like useful actionable tips and ideas. And, and I have to say, looking through it made me feel better about my concerns about my own kids screen use and how that there are a lot of like, really good things that we can do. And there's a lot of support and information out there. Dr. Cliff Sussman 44:39Yeah, we need more though. We're going to and we're going to work on that we're going to work on getting a lot more support for parents struggling with this and, you know, cuz cuz more and more of us are becoming aware of how huge a crisis this is, and we're not ignoring the elephant in the room, you know.Hannah Choi 44:56Right. Yeah, it is time to tackle that elephant and to take control. Great. Well, thank you so much for joining me. It was really interesting. And, and there is some hope in there as you know, as, as we were saying we are really surrounded by it. And it is really difficult to, yeah, like you said, you can't practice abstinence. It's just not possible. But there are a lot of really great strategies that and also opportunities to learn and opportunities to connect with your kids, which are never not a good use of your time. Yeah, that's right. Great. All right. Well, thanks again for joining me. And, yes, listeners, please check out the show notes because you'll, you'll just be really glad to see all this information there. All right. Okay. Thanks. Dr. Cliff Sussman 45:48Thank you. Bye, bye.Hannah Choi 45:50And that's our show for today. You can now get back to what you were doing before I so rudely called you out on it. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. You can do whatever you want. And I sure won't judge you for it because I am over here trying to find my own screen use balance. But if you've got the time, be sure to check out those show notes for links to learn more about Dr. Sussman and the excellent work he's doing. If you're a provider of support for people who may be dealing with screen addiction, I recommend taking a look at his training materials. There are some excellent resources in there. A scribe approached and said to Jesus, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”  Matthew 8:19This scribe said the right thing to Jesus.  This is the attitude we should all have toward our Lord.  We must be ready and willing to follow Him no matter what.  However, Jesus' response to this scribe is interesting.  He said, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head” (Matthew 8:20).What do we take from this response?  It appears to be a way for Jesus to say to the scribe, “Are you truly ready and willing to follow me no matter what?”  In other words, Jesus wants to illustrate to the scribe that the choice to follow Him is a commitment to travel down a road that is risky only in the sense that following Jesus requires complete trust in Him.  We will not be told, ahead of time, where our Lord will lead and what He will ask of us.  Rather, when we unreservedly choose to follow Jesus, we are putting our trust in Him as a person and are telling Him that we embrace His will no matter what it is.  This level of trust is the key to what Jesus wants.Reflect, today, upon two things.  First, reflect upon these words of the scribe and ask yourself whether or not you can confidently say them in your own life.  Say them over and over and try to let them move from your head to your heart as a willing embrace of the Lord's plan for your life.  Second, reflect upon the effects of such a response in your own life.  Are you willing to not only say these words but to also embrace all that follows from such a commitment?  Are you willing to trust the Lord with your whole life?  Strive to make this firm resolution and this resolution will lead you down the path of much joy.My trustworthy Lord, I do commit myself to following You wherever You go.  I choose Your most holy will above all things.  Help me to live faithfully in accord with Your divine will and to say “Yes” to You every day.  Jesus, I trust in You. Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2022 My Catholic Life! “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.  I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.  Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”  Matthew 16:18-19This passage should give us great comfort.  Why?  Because in this passage Jesus lays the foundation of His Church.  He gives to Peter the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.  And, in so doing, He establishes what has come to be known as the gift of “infallibility.”Think about it.  What does it mean to be given “the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven?”  This is quite a statement.  But by speaking it clearly and definitively, Jesus entrusted an incredible spiritual power to Peter.  Peter may not have understood what this exactly meant at the time, but he would have been changed as he was entrusted with such authority.By “infallibility” we mean that Peter was guaranteed to teach only that which was true in the areas of faith and morality.  Faith and morality are what live on forever in the Kingdom of Heaven and so it is with authority in these areas that Peter is entrusted.Furthermore, we know that the Apostles had successors.  Peter went to Rome and became the Bishop of Rome.  He was succeeded by Linus, then Cletus, then Clement, and so forth until the Bishop of Rome today.  This is important to note because this spiritual authority that Jesus gave to Peter did not end with his death.  Rather, it continued with his successors and will continue on until the end of the world.Today, in celebrating the great Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, we not only honor the Pope, we also rejoice in the spiritual authority that the Holy Father has been entrusted with.  And knowing that Jesus is alive in such a way, through the certain teaching authority of the Keys of Heaven, we should be comforted and at peace knowing that the gates of hell will never prevail against the Church.  Popes are sinners, but they are also visible and infallible instruments of Christ Himself every time they exercise their sacred role.Reflect, today, upon your faith in the Church.  We do not put our faith in persons, we put our faith in Christ, His Church and in the spiritual authority entrusted to the Church.  Reflect upon your own faith in this regard and if it is lacking in any way, renew it in honor of this great Feast of the Chair of St. Peter.Lord Jesus, You entrusted Your power and authority to St. Peter and to all of his successors.  I thank You for the gift of our Pope.  I pray for him and offer him to You for Your guidance and protection.  I renew my faith in the gift of the Holy Father and in Your promise to lead us always through him.  May my faith in Your Church bring me consolation and hope as we all move forward to the goal of our salvation, the glorious Kingdom of Heaven.  Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2022 My Catholic Life! For on that evening the village was invaded by the militia who dragged forty men from their beds and afterward murdered them.2) 10:56During the year 1955, cases of this type were very numerous in Algeria. Unfortunately not all the patients had the good fortune to be sent to a hospital.3) 21:07This type of torture is the cause of a very large number of deaths. After these enemas given at high pressure, the mucous membrane of the intestine becomes in fact the seat of numerous lesions which provoke minute perforations of the intestine. Gaseous embolisms and cases of peritonitis are thus very frequently caused.4) 22:09We are here speaking of course of those Algerians who, knowing something, have not confessed under torture; for it is well known that an Algerian who confesses is killed immediately afterward.5) 23:28The medical attendants are obliged to sit by the patient night and day working to explain matters to him. We can understand that the formula of "treating him a bit rough" is of no possible value here.6) 24:19This preventive torture becomes in certain districts "preventive repression." Thus at Rivet, though peace reigned, the settlers did not want to be taken unawares (the neighboring districts were beginning to stir) and decided purely and simply to do away with all eventual members of the FLN. Over forty Algerians were killed in a single day.7) 26:25In fact, it is not "foreign" at all. A conflict is only the result of the dynamic evolution of the personality, and here there can be no "foreign body." We ought rather to say that the problem is one of a "badly integrated body."8) 27:31We can cite in the same way the case of psychiatrists who were prime movers in "Presence frangaise," who when they were called in to give an expert opinion on a prisoner had the habit from the very first of proclaiming their great friendship with the defending lawyer, and of assuring the prisoner that the two of them (the barrister and the psychiatrist) would get him out of there. All the prisoners who had the benefit of expert opinions were guillotined. These psychiatrists boasted in front of us of their elegant method of overcoming "resistance."9) 30:00We know that in the United States of America a trend toward psycho-sociology has developed. Supporters of this school think that the tragedy of the contemporary individual is contained in the fact that he has no longer any part to play, and that present-day social conditions force him to exist only as a cog in the machine. From this comes the proposal of a therapeutic which will allow a man to take various roles in a veritable game of activity. Anyone can play any role; it even happens that in a single day a person's role may be changed; symbolically you may put yourself in the place of anyone you please. The factory psychiatrists in the United States are, it seems, making huge strides in group psychotherapy among workers. The latter are in fact able to identify themselves with heroes. Strained relations between employers and workers are considerably diminished.

Well hey there!   Welcome back to The Burt (Not Ernie) Show - part of the Spark Network now playing on the Edifi app.   I'm your host, Jan L. Burt, author of the brand new book "A 60 Day Prayer Journal for Parents" available via Amazon (if you would like to receive a pdf copy in exchange for a review as a BETA reader, please email me at JanLBurt@outlook.com with the subject line BETA).   Today we are looking at Hebrews chapter 6, verses 9-20 from the Amplified.   Better Things for You 9But, beloved, even though we speak to you in this way, [c]we are convinced of better things concerning you, and of things that accompany salvation. 10For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown for His name in ministering to [the needs of] the saints (God's people), as you do. 11And we desire for each one of you to show the same diligence [all the way through] so as to realize and enjoy the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you will not be [spiritually] sluggish, but [will instead be] imitators of those who through faith [lean on God with absolute trust and confidence in Him and in His power] and by patient endurance [even when suffering] are [now] inheriting the promises. 13For when God made the promise to Abraham, He swore [an oath] by Himself, since He had no one greater by whom to swear, 14saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.” 15And so, having patiently waited, he realized the promise [in the miraculous birth of Isaac, as a pledge of what was to come from God]. 16Indeed men swear [an oath] by [d]one greater than themselves, and with them [in all disputes] the oath serves as confirmation [of what has been said] and is an end of the dispute. 17In the same way God, in His desire to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable nature of His purpose, intervened and guaranteed it with an oath, 18so that by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge would have strong encouragement and indwelling strength to hold tightly to the hope set before us. 19This hope [this confident assurance] we have as an anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whatever pressure bears upon it]--a safe and steadfast hope that enters within the veil [of the heavenly temple, that most Holy Place in which the very presence of God dwells], 20where Jesus has entered [in advance] as a forerunner for us, having become a High Priest forever according to the order of [e]Melchizedek.   Please take seriously the importance of knowing who you are according to God's Word, and don't ever opt for living like someone God says you aren't. The best you is the you God created you to be - so don't let satan dupe you into living like you're not who you truly are - free in Christ, a beloved child of God, welcome in His presence at all times, dear to His heart, the apple of His eye.   The header of this section of Hebrews 6 is entitled "Better Things For You". As we head into Christmas and the end of 2021, start of 2022, does anybody want some better things? For yourself? For your family? For your church? Your workplace? For your health? Your ministry? In your walk with Jesus? Well, me too! Let's just simply assume that these verses will give us exactly that - better things for you and for me.   First off, God sees. And He is never unjust. He does not have the ability to forget your work for His causes or your love shown as you have ministered to people. He sees & He is never unjust. That's good to remember!   So stay diligent. Don't slack off! The promise here is if we don't slack off, don't be a slacker, we will enjoy the full assurance of hope right up until the very last moments of our time on planet earth.   Feeling hopeless? Can I ask if maybe you're lacking some diligence in your calling (& you have a calling, a ministry, a purpose in God's kingdom & His work to advance the Gospel of Jesus!) - in your ministry - in your love for the Lord? Is He your first love? Does your love for Him burn hot, or is it more like ashes cooling down and a fire smoldering out? See verse 11 - this isn't Jan talking here, this is just Jan reiterating what God has said in His word. Don't be spiritually sluggish. The opposite of sluggishness is to lean in (as in, we have to personally do the work of leaning, not just as the church as a whole, but as individuals) and trust the Lord absolutely.  Have full confidence in Him and in His power. And He has power, believe me you! This is the way to those better things that lie ahead for us!   You have an inheritance coming - live today in light of that future.   God made His promise and took an oath by His own name because there is no greater name than the Name above all names. It's a trustworthy promise because of the One who made the promise. Just as He kept His word to Abraham, He will always be about the work of keeping His promises to you, too.   To doubt God's word is to dispute it.  Don't live in unbelief, in disbelief, and be a person who disputes God's word.   By two unchangeable things, says verse 18, His promise & His oath, it is impossible for God to lie. When God, who says all things are possible with Him, states that something is impossible, we need to pay attention! It will never be a possibility for God to lie. He has never lied to you and He isn't going to start now.  Why don't we believe that with everything within us? I hope, starting today, that we will! He has strong encouragement for us, this passage says. And indwelling strength to hold tightly to the hope set before us.   Hope is a wonderful word to describe the Christmas season. Be hopeful! Your inheritance is on it's way, my friend! Hope is the anchor of the soul - it cannot slip - it cannot break down under whatever pressure bears upon it. It is a safe & steadfast hope, this hope that we have in Jesus. He is our living hope! And it ushers us into the Most Holy Place in which the very presence of God dwells. Fight to hold on to your hope - it is life-giving and we need it!   This December, may hope be your watchword & the assurance of better things for you bring you comfort & joy this Christmas.   If you'd like to be a BETA reader & leave a review of the new prayer journal on Amazon & Goodreads, please let me know (leave a comment here or send me a message!) Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life!

Jesus, I trust in You. Colossians 2:16-18 Freedom from Rules and New Life in ChristThis follows on from the previous verses in this chapter as it starts with So. We need to see what was written before to help in our understanding of this section. The section deals with the lies and deception that had come into the early Church.v10 is the Key VerseIf you are complete in Christ (and you are) then you do not need additions to your faith to make you holier or more acceptable to God.ITS JESUS PLUS NOTHING or IT ISNT JESUS AT ALLIt's not Jesus plus circumcision and it's not listening to empty philosophies and high sounding nonsense that come from human thinking.No. We are new creatures in Christ. We have been made alive by the Holy Spirit and our debt is paid. v14Paul reminds them that having gained this new freedom in Christ they should be careful not to gain another debt, to the law! Things that are seen as adding to their spirituality end up as powers to which they are enslaved! v16 is Paul's warning. They are in danger of putting themselves back under the law and listening to people who are full of pride and their own achievements. They are no longer even listening to Christ the head of the body v19. They are disconnected.PROUD OF WHAT?Being super spiritual, better than othersWorking your salvation by denying your body comfortsProud of your gifting, visions of angels etcProud of your positionProud of following the law to make yourself worthy to God.WE NEED TO BE CAREFUL OF ALL OF THESE AREAS OURSELVESWhat they have missed is that Christ is the reality. No longer dealing with shadows but Christ is here and lives in them! The reality has come!We are all sinners. Romans 3 vs 23 BUT there is good news Jesus came to save sinners. He came to save those who are sick not those who are well. Something the religious leaders of the day did not understand. Jesus had a meal with many tax collectors and disreputable sinners “Why does you teacher eat with such scum? They asked? Jesus reply in Matt 9:12-13 is wonderful. You see all these rules and regulations are external to us but Jesus wants to change our heart, from being dead to being spiritually alive! He changes us from the inside out, not from the outside in.Hebrews 10:16-17Nicodemus came to Jesus at night to try and talk and find out who Jesus was and he initially thinks that Jesus has come to save the Jews from the Romans. Jesus explains that his kingdom deals with our sinful nature. Here is the link on Youtube.1 Timothy 2:5-6Jesus died to bring freedom to you. Be careful to not go back and condemn yourselves because you are not doing enough, you cannot earn your salvation. It is a gift from GodWhat is vital is that we are connected to Christ. It's all about Jesus, as always!Colossians 2:19This is where you need to be - connected to Christ – let God nourish you and grow you as a believer in Christ.Questions 1.Why is pride an issue for God? What areas of our lives to we need to be careful with so we don't become proud?2.We can so easily fall back under the law - laws that other people put on us and even laws we put on ourselves - that we think are ok for our spiritual growth! Think about some of these that you have experienced.3.Colossians 2 vs 19 is an important verse so how can we ensure that we are always connected to Christ – so important if we are to grow and be nourished.4.Perhaps watch the Nicodemus clip together – what speaks to you from this clip and do you see the freedom that it brings to Nicodemus? Nicodemus was a high ranking Jew – part of the Sanhedrin and well respected – Knew the law and the bible but didn't know Jesus until now!

In that case, Jesus says that the world will hate you.No one wants to be hated. No one wants to experience the wrath, persecution, attacks, or ridicule of another. Hatred is ugly, painful, and difficult to endure. But that is part of the nature of hate. It’s not only a form of persecution, it’s also a form of manipulation. We are regularly tempted to believe that fulfillment is found in money, our physical appearance, the recognition of our accomplishments, and much more. The world tells us that our opinions must conform to the secular values of the age—and if they don’t, then we are judgmental, close-minded, extremists, and should be shunned and “cancelled” or silenced. These worldly temptations and pressures are real, and, for that reason, Jesus’ words are freeing. They free us from the manipulations and deceptions we will experience when we live our faith openly for all to see. When we do so, we will be hated by the world. But knowing that provides peace of heart when it happens.Reflect, today, upon these powerful and consoling words of Jesus. If you do not experience any form of hatred from the world, then this should be a concern and the cause for reflection. And if you do experience some form of hatred, know that our Lord prepared you for this and offers you His strength and courage to endure it with joy. In the end, all that matters is what our Lord thinks, and nothing else. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

Consilience: A new Way to See the World"Pub date: 2021-04-19This is a first for me, having a recorded conversation with somebody I have just met. I will say however Tom's book is incredibly interesting and challenging in many ways. He takes an alternative look at everything we think is right in the world and challenges some of the traditional ways we think about ourselves and others. It is a challenging read that will make you think but is not that the point.  When I first had the call with Tom, I had only managed to get two thirds of the way through the book, and so I am not sure I have done him the justice he deserves, especially now I have completed It. Third Sunday of Advent Sunday, December 13, 2020 Year (cycle): B   The Collect:  Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. 3 Then they said among the nations, *       "The Lord has done great things for them." 4 The Lord has done great things for us, *        and we are glad indeed.

Hi, and welcome to Wine Women and Revolution. If you followed me back in the days, you know, I had on a couple of times Mr. Henry Hank Green and when he ran for mayor I supported and endorsed him. And now it's probably been a long time since we've talked Henry. How long have you been? Henry Green 0:58Oh man, it's been too long. It's been too long. I'm happy to just feel your spirit, that feels like you feel like you happy I was looking at your pictures the other day your anniversary. That was really cute. You've been a busy man too, right? Henry Green 1:33Well, kinda sorta. It's, um, it's been kind of hectic. This virus, this pandemic coronavirus, has changed our lives completely and how things have been going. And it's really, it's been really frustrating. And it's been bad, it really hasn't been good. A lot of good people that I've known. And I've passed on throughout this process. And it hasn't been good. You know, I mean, for for a lot of people that I know, and you know, things like that. But what we can do is just keep moving forward and try to move forward. I keep trying to be positive, optimistic. I mean, about what's to come in the future, something something. Oh, it's been hard man, you know, man, I've been in a depression battling depression and all this stuff. And it's been difficult. But what you know, I've always been told is that you know me, when you fall down, you know, I mean, long as you get back up, you know, what I mean? You know, that's all you can do, really, at the end of the day, so we get back up. I'm swinging again, and trying to take my best step forward and build on some things far from where I would like to be physically, mentally, and everything, At the end of the day, but I'm still trying to do, to be passionate about the things I'm passionate about still trying to have a positive spirit that, that I was, that my mother instilled in me to keep moving forward, despite the conflicts, or the battles and ups and downs of life. And, and, and just be honest to yourself, and be honest about whatever it is that you're doing. You know, I'm being honest right now. In 2013, Pope Francis became the 265th successor of St. Peter. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2019 My Catholic Life! What do you know about salvation? Some say all you have to do is believe while others may say just have faith and God will save you. Well, both of these are necessary, but what else does the Bible say about salvation? Speaker or Performer: Bob Petersen Date of Delivery: August 11, 2019 Scriptures1 Timothy 1:18-19This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.2 Corinthians 11:22-26 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. Are they servants of Christ? I know I sound like a madman, but I have served him far more! I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again. Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.2 Corinthians 12:10Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.Matthew 8:23-27 When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, Save us, Lord; we are perishing! He said to them, Why are you afraid, you men of little faith? Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. The men were amazed, and said, What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?Acts 16:22-30- Paul and Silas ImprisonedThe crowd rose up together against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods. When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely; and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them; and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were unfastened. When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, Do not harm yourself, for we are all here! And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, and after he brought them out, he said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?ArticlesQuotes“I will not be changed by the violations meant to harm me. A scribe approached and said to [Jesus], “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”  Matthew 8:19This scribe said the right thing to Jesus.  This is the attitude we should all have toward our Lord.  We must be ready and willing to follow Him no matter what.  However, Jesus’ response to this scribe is interesting. Say them over and over and try to let them move from your head to your heart as a willing embrace of the Lord’s plan for your life.  Second, reflect upon the effects of such a response in your own life.  Are you willing to not only say these words but to also embrace all that follows from such a commitment?  Are you willing to trust the Lord with your whole life?  Strive to make this firm resolution and this resolution will lead you down the path of much joy.Lord, I do commit myself to following You wherever You go.  I choose Your most holy will above all things.  Help me to live faithfully in accord with Your divine will and to say “Yes” to You every day.  Jesus, I trust in You.

6.9.19This is a very familiar parable. In fact, most people, Christian or not, churchgoer or not, know about this story. This is the story of the Good Samaritan. But, what you are going to see became clear is that there is an obvious meaning to the story that most everyone gets and there is also another meaning that almost no one gets. The one everyone gets is: Do Good. Love People. The one that Jesus was trying to get across to the expert in religious law: You cannot live good enough to be good enough. Vivekachudamani Verses: 1-7, 11, 15, 18, 19This lecture was given by Swami Tattwamayananda at Stanford University. The lecture was hosted by the Stanford Hindu Students Association. -Viveka means a discerning wisdom between the long lasting and real versus the short-lived and unreal. It is a reprioritization towards the beneficial and long lasting.-Shankaracharya, the author of the text, may be one of the greatest geniuses the world has ever produced. Before Sri Shankaracharya, the idea of Advaita or nondualistic philosophy existed because it is as old as Rig Veda itself, but the formulation of a complete and compact philosophical structure, expounding its metaphysics, ontology, cosmology, logic, and epistemology, was entirely his contribution.-Vivekachudamani is a great introductory text because it teaches the philosophy and the culture of spiritual life in 584 verses.-Shankaracharya’s teacher was Govinda Bhagavatpada. -Human birth, longing for freedom, and the company of great souls are three rare gifts from God. A great soul is one whose company stimulates your desire for higher life.-It is spiritual suicide to reject our own spiritual nature if we have been given all the advantages for the realization of our spiritual nature.-Action and rituals are not wrong but they cannot, on their own lead to spiritual realization. They serve to purify the mind.-The proof of a pure mind is unshakeable inner contentment, which is unrelated to any external circumstances (santosha or citta-prasada or citta-shuddhi)-Epoch makers in spiritual life always get linked to an ancient tradition through a guru. The guru is necessary to understand the reality of the spiritual reality which is apparently invisible at the beginning. -Viveka, a reprioritization towards the Real or unchanging (nitya) and away from the Unreal or fleeting (anitya) is the first of the four disciplines of Vedanta. It is foolish to imagine eternal happiness in the obviously imperfect world. Saints internalize this fact, conserve energy and are able to work with complete concentration and do tremendous work.-Mumukshutvam, the yearning for truth and freedom supports all of the qualities needed for a Vedantic aspirant. Without a higher non-worldly ideal, psychological depression is almost certain.-Sri Ramakrishna’s parable of the four kinds of fish is used to illustrate mumukshutvam.

The movement of the first eleven chapters of brings us to a genealogy in chapter 11, whose only purpose seems to be to introduce Abram - the friend of God. Genesis chapter one: Adam walk with God in the garden. This intimacy was lost. In chapter 5 it is rediscovered by Enoch, who walked with God in such a way that he is raptured - saving him from the wrath that was coming. In chapter 6 Noah is found to be righteous and he walked with God. He builds an ark and together with his family survives the flood. But in all of these chapters the reader is left with a question: “How do you walk with God?” What this walk looks like and how it is accomplished is not explained in the first eleven chapters. Enter Abram. This man receives 15 chapters in Genesis and is quoted by both Paul and James in their consideration and explanation of faith. He is called the friend of God in James, but God called him that first (Isaiah 41:8).Last week I pointed out that Abraham wasn't perfect and we already catch him in a lie in chapter 12. Walking with God isn't about being perfect. It's about faith - even when faith is uncomfortable.Four Scenes (Hebrews 11:8-19)We've already covered this chapter in this series, but I want to learn about faith from the four scenes the author of Hebrews picks from the life of Abram and Sarah. He follows without knowing where (8)Abram is called by God in Ur of the Chaldeans (Genesis 11:32; 15:7) to leave his country and his people and separate from his father's household (Genesis 12:1-6). Abram is a descendant of Shem, but he doesn't appear to be worshipping God and there is no mention of a righteous walk. God chooses Abram and not the other way around. However, Abram exercises faith by heeding the call and obeying God. This is the point made by the writer of Hebrews. He abides without certain comforts (9-10)Now Abram was wealthy - we read this in Genesis 13 - and yet he never puts down roots to build a city. This was the common practice in those days and despite not building a city, Abram is able to fight and defeat the city-kings of the East (with a force of 318 trained men) when they take his cousin Lot as spoil after defeating Sodom. Yet despite his wealth, reputation, and strength he never builds a city and remains in tents. He remained a stranger in this land God has promised him and the writer of Hebrews gives us the why: his hope was the city that God would design and build. He didn't run ahead of God's plan and time table. His faith was patient - even if it meant going without certain comforts. He expects without precedent (11-12)Hebrews shifts the focus to Sarah, who through faith conceives at the ripe age of 90. A lot happened in the meantime, including the incident with Hagar - which certainly wasn't an act of strong faith. According to Genesis 21 Sarah conceived at the time that God had ordained. This is where Abram exercised faith and it was counted to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6). He believed that God would keep His promises and he lived his life accordingly - even if there was not precedent of a 90 year old woman bearing children. Yes, there was doubt and manipulation along the way, but in the end - and they waited 25 years - Abraham and Sarah believed that God does what He says He will do. After these three scenes in Hebrews the author pauses with an incredible conclusion: God was not ashamed to be called their God. (11:16)He trusts without knowing the outcome (17-19)And then God asks the impossible of Abraham: sacrifice the son of promise (Genesis 22). And Abraham obeys and follows through. According to Hebrews he considered that if God could give him his son when His wife was too old to conceive, God could raise him from the dead too. There was not precedence for believing their either! So God intervenes as the knife comes down, but it was faith that compelled him to obey without knowing what God was planning or why God would ask this of him.So show it James 2:21-24When it comes to faith, James makes the point that the life of Abraham teaches us that faith isn't stagnant. As one preacher put it: “there's dead faith (17) and devilish faith (19) too and neither are going to get you very far.” Did Abraham work for His salvation? No, that's not the point James is making… James uses Abraham's life to establish that Abraham did more than say he had faith… he showed it. His life was a walk with God. Again: not perfectly, but believed God does what He says. And we are called to do the same… believe God. Have faith. Hold on. So...Where He leads… I will follow.Where He places me… I will remain. What He promises… I will believe. When He asks the impossible… I will trust.“Christ teaches us not to save ourselves, but sacrifice ourselves. There is no such thing as belonging to Christ and living for yourself.” -- A.W. Pink

Text: Acts 1: 15-26 15In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, 16“Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus— 17for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” 18(Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their language Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20“For it is written in the book of Psalms, ‘Let his homestead become desolate, and let there be no one to live in it’; and ‘Let another take his position of overseer.’ 21So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.” 23So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. 24Then they prayed and said, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen 25to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

This is the 13th class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas. The following is the outline of the class. God's Blueprint of Jesus Hebrews class 13 chapter 7 Melchizedek - God's Photoshop of Jesus Our High Priest Hebrews 6:20 -7:20 17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.19This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Jewish Old Covenant Priesthood Definition – a priest is one authorized form the sacred rights of a religion, especially as a mediator between man and God. He always represented man to God. There were priests before Mount Sinai Jewish Old Covenant Priesthood Definition – a priest is one authorized form the sacred rights of a religion, especially as a mediator between man and God. He always represented man to God. There were priests before Mount Sinai. At Mount Sinai God designated Aaron and his descendants to serve as priests All priests were Levites, but not all Levites were priests. Not anyone other than Aaron and his descendants could be priests-They received a tithe Qualifications Of priestly service Must be a male 2. Must be a descendent of Aaron with a documented lineage 3. Must be between 30 and 50 years old Qualifications Priesthood Must be unblemished not lame or blonde His marriage must be – not to a harlot, not to a divorced woman, Not to a window other than a priests window The high priest must marry a virgin of his own people. Must have no uncleanness leprosy etc. Must have an un-trimmed beard Must have special God ordained clothing The high priest– Direct the work of the priests and Levites– Inquire of the Lord– Maintain the golden candlestick with fire – offering sacrifices on the day of atonement The position of high priest continued to the time of Jesus was eliminated in 70 A.D. New Testament Priesthood All Christians are priests, and, with spiritual sacrifices (Rom. 12:1ff; Phil. 2:17; 4:18; Heb. 13:15-16; 1 Pet. 2:5), we offer up service to God through our High Priest, Jesus Christ (Heb. 3:1; 4:14ff), references to children of God as “priests” in the New Testament (1 Pet. 2:5, 9; Rev. 1:6; 5:10; 20:6). False Ideas Associated with Priesthood “were clothed with the powers of Jesus Christ,” and that Catholic priests, as “successors” of the apostles, are similarly endowed with their power (James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of Our Fathers, Baltimore: John Murphy, 1917, p. 387ff). The idea is closely associated with the delusion that in performing the “Mass,” the priests are sacrificing the body of Christ — a notion completely at variance with the Scriptures. The New Testament teaches that Jesus was sacrificed once, and that was entirely sufficient (cf. Heb. 9:25-28). 2. The Mormon theory of priesthood is equally erroneous. Mormonism promotes two priesthoods, without which, supposedly, there can be no salvation. These are the Melchizedek and the Aaronic priesthoods (Doctrine & Covenants 107:1-3,5). The Mormon priesthood dogma has no authority higher than that of Joseph Smith, Jr., who claims to have “restored” the ancient order of priests on May 15, 1829 First of all, the Melchizedek priesthood was to belong to Christ, and to none other, until the end of time. The writer of Hebrews says concerning Jesus that: “. . . he, because he abides forever, has his priesthood unchangeable” (7:24). Second, the Aaronic priesthood cannot be operative today because it was an integral part of the law of Moses, which law was abolished by Christ (Eph. 2:15), one could not restore the Aaronic priesthood without “of necessity” resurrecting the entire Mosaic law (Heb. 7:12). The order of Melchizedek Hebrews 6:20 -7:20 Hebrews 7 7 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; 3Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. “YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.” Genesis14:17 Then after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18AndMelchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. 19He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” He gave him a tenth of all. Hebrews 7 7 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; Psalm 76King James Version (KJV) 76 In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel. 2In Salem also is his tabernacle and his dwelling place in Zion. Hebrews 7 7For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; 3Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Hebrews 7 4Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. 5And those indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have commandment in the Law to collect a tenth from the people, that is, from their brethren, although these are descended from Abraham. 6But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham and blessed him that had the promises. 7And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. 9And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, paid tithes in Abraham. Matthew 22 41While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42Saying, what think ye of Christ? Whose son is he? They say unto him, the son of David. 43He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, 44The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? 46And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions. This is the twelfth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas. The following is the outline of the class. Our Greatest Assurance of Salvation GOD’S WARNING Hebrews Chapter 6:4-8 Hebrews 6(NASB) 1.For in the case of those who have once been enlightened 2. And have tasted of the heavenly gift 3. And have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 4. And have tasted the good word of God 5. And the powers of the age to come, 6. And then have fallen away, 7. It is impossible to renew them again to repentance since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. Different categories of falling away 1.Apostate = someone who leaves Christ for another savior 2. Judaizer = someone who wants to hold on to Christ and Judaism 3. Backslider = someone who leaves Christ to go back into the world 4. Unloving Christian = someone who does not love the brethren 5. False teacher = someone who knowingly perverts a gospel tenet about Jesus 6. Lukewarm Christian = don’t care, selfish Christians GOD’S MEMORY – OUR ENCOURAGEMENT Verses 9-12 9But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.10For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. 11And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Malachi 3 (NIV) 16Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name. 17“On the day when I act,” says the LORD Almighty, “they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him. 18And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not. Hebrews (NASB) 9But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.10For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. 11And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Good Works Ephesians 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. James 2:18 - Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. James 2:26 - For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. Hebrews 13:16 - But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Matthew 25 31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. The goats on his left. 34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40“The King will reply, ‘truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Hebrews (NASB)9But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.10For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. 11And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. GREATEST ASSURANCE OF SALVATION Verses 13-20 Hebrews 6 (NASB) 13For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.” 15And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, Hebrews 6 (NASB) 13For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.” 15And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, The heirs of the promise Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise Hebrews 6 (NASB) 13For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.” 15And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, Hebrews 6 (NASB) 17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.19This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. 17For it is attested of Him, “YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”  18For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness 19(for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. 20And inasmuch as it was not without an oath 21(for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him, “THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL NOT CHANGE HIS MIND, ‘YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER’”); Hebrews 6 (NASB) 17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.19This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Life lessons from PaulPhilippians 4:14-19This second sermon on life lessons from Paul concludes his closing remarks. In other letters he closes by taking the quill from his amanuensis, not only to show personal interest, but also to authenticate his letters. (see 2 Thess. 3:17) Perhaps that is what he has done in these last verses: personally thanking them for their gift for his need.An important lesson from Paul is learned in these final verses that I want to expound this morning and I would like to begin where I ended last week: Paul's life lessons are lessons learned in the School of walking with the Master and we will learn these lessons also as God gives us opportunity. What will you make of the opportunity?Experience has taught Paul a thing or two about money and in discussing the Philippians' gift to him, that lesson is clearly evident.First of all, Paul speaks in peculiar terms in regards to the Philippians' ministry to him: he speak of concern, opportunity, and reviving.Concern 10aThese Philippians were concerned with Paul. He has already elluded to the fact that they labored together with him for the gospel (1:5) and calls them co-laborers (4:3b). They cared enough about Paul to commission Epaphroditus on a trip to Rome. But their concern was not just now… ten years ago when Paul was planting Churches in Macedonia, they were concerned as well. (15-16)This Church cared about this apostle and it moved them to action.Opportunity 10cThey cared, but weren't in a position to help… until now. An opportunity to help him arose. A textbook definition of this word is a “profitable moment”. God brought about an opportunity to act upon the care they already had for him.Paul calls this opportunity “sharing in his trouble.” This was an opportunity that would be costly, that would be troublesome. Yet they were able to engage with him through this trouble.Revive 10bThe verb attached to their action toward Paul is “revive”. A strange verb that is only used here in Scripture. It calls up images of a flower or plant that shoots out new roots and sprouts. It comes to life.Their care for Paul through acting on this opportunity is described as flourishing. And Paul calls what they did “good.”Which brings us to what Paul has learned: It's not about the gift… it's about the credit on their account. What account? Their account in heaven. Paul drives their attention heaven-ward: He has received their gift, he is overwhelmed, everything is filled up and their gift… he describes it as an offering given to God. Using all the Old Testament imagery, this gift they have given is well-pleasing to the Lord.Attached to this gift they have given, then, is the promise: God will supply all you needs according to His riches. And there you have it… Paul has learned through experience that God takes care of our needs. He uses others to do it… by causing care to grow in their hearts, by bringing an opportunity to act, and then by allowing a sacrifice to flourish in and through us.Just because you care, though… and just because there is an opportunity… doesn't mean that you will flourish. We must choose to give the gift, to sacrifice for others. And in no other area of life is this quite as evident as in the area of our finances. How generous are you?
